CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria.
Venice, c.1693. Two sheets conjoined, total 490 x 770mm. Remargined at top, as usual with this large format plate. A magnificent, large-scale bird's-eye view of Venice, surrounded by armorials of the Venetian nobility on a garland, the Venetian lion top centre. This is an example of the first state (of three), still with the date of 1693 in the dedication roundel. This is a scarce map: it not appear in all of Coronelli's atlases and the examples that did were often damaged because of the large height and width. MORETTO: 114, first state of three, 'considered one of the most beautiful and appreciated Venetian maps'.

Velden, M. Van
Lovani [Leuven, Louvain], AE. Denique, 1693. Broadsheet (50.0 x 34.0 cm). Folded in six, and preserved in 18th-century marbled boards.= This large pamphlet contains a treatise on Descartian philosophy by Martin van Velden, from The Hague, professor at the University of Leuven, or Louvain - the oldest and largest university in the Low Countries. It was (to be) defended at the Scholis Artium on the 27th of July, 1693. Just two years earlier, van Velden had been punished for openly defending Cartesian philosophy, which only very gradually replaced the prevailing Aristotelian philosophy at the university and in Roman Catholic countries in general. In 1681 Maarten Etienne van (de) Velden (1664-1724) enrolled at the Faucon college in Leuven, and in 1683 in the faculty of arts. From 1688, his name appeared on promotional lists as the primary philosophy teacher of that college. Subsequently, he became a professor of mathematics, a chair once occupied by the Cartesian van Gutschoven; there, he showed himself to be a 'famosus in experimentis' follower of the newer [Cartesian] ideas and in 1690 he visited the famous Dutch scientist and mathematician Christiaan Huygens. On January 15, 1691 van Velden wanted his students to defend two propositions, including an 'indubitatum est systema Copernici' etc.’ Despite mediation by [Cardinal] Giulio Piazza in Brussels, this caused major difficulties with the faculty. Although obliged to submit, he wrote a three-fold series of statements about logic, physics and metaphysics, in which he added a corollary, confirming the Copernicus system once mor … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOGHE, Romeyn de.
Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1693. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 600 x 950mm. Some restoration, laid on archival paper. A superb chart of south-east England showing the Thames to London, and the sea coast round to Portland with the Isle of Wight and Aldernay, an inset detail of the Strait of Dover and prospects of Portsmouth and Rochester & Chatham. The chart appeared in one part of Mortier's 'Neptune François', titled 'Cartes Marines a l'Usage des Armées du Roy de la Grande Bretagne'. The nine charts of this section, all engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe, one of the foremost artist/etchers of the period, was described by Koeman as the 'most spectacular type of maritime cartography ever produced in 17th century Amsterdam'. Mortier's motives in the production of this atlas was to flatter the Dutch king on the British throne since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William III, to whom it is dedicated. The unprecedented size of the atlas and the use of artists such as de Hooghe were not cheap: Again Koeman calls it the 'most expensive sea atlas' of the period, 'intended more as a show-piece than something to be used by the pilots as sea'. KOEMAN: vol 4. p. 423-4, M.Mor 5.

SAINT Lo, George
W. Miller, London, 1693. 48pp. plus engraved titlepage. Modern three-quarter mottled calf and marbled boards, maroon gilt morocco label. Minor chipping at head of spine. Bookplate on front pastedown and front free endpaper. Extra titlepage trimmed close at bottom, slight loss in last line. Internally clean. Very good. St. Lo, drawing upon his experiences as a French prisoner (which he relates in detail in his introduction), here posits several methods for the improvement of the British navy. First among these is an alternative to the expensive practice of impressment. He suggests that all members of the navy be trained to perform a wide variety of shipboard tasks, therefore avoiding the need to employ individuals to man every post, reducing the manpower needed to fall within the number of volunteers. He recommends raising the pay of the crewmen, reasoning that higher pay yields higher efficiency, and that the gains in efficiency will far outweigh the increased payroll. Furthermore, he proposes that all seamen be registered with a local intendent, so that when the call for service does come, men may be located and distributed more quickly. Regarding the confiscation of foreign cargo, St. Lo proposes that fully one third of the value of the prize be given to the captain and the crew. When it comes time to auction the actual goods, he recommends the bounty be broken into small lots, to allow for the greatest price per lot, thus increasing revenue. In short, St. Lo advocates a pro-reward philosophy of human resource management, at a time when stick was more popular than carrot. … [Click Below for Full Description]

During the 17th century Amsterdam became is significant center of Jewish printing to serve members of the city's then sizable Sephardic community. A significant portion of the community would have been ex-Marranos (Jews, who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain, who then immigrated and were able to reestablished their Jewish identity), and thus were unable to read Hebrew, hence the publication of Jewish works in vernacular Spanish and/or Portuguese (as is the case here). As stated by the author in the introduction: "The Torah is divided into two parts - the duties to be performed by the organs (chovot ha`evarim) and the duties of the heart (chovot halev), namely those belonging to human conscience. Il est venu d'une riche famille municipale de l'ordre équestre romain et est largement considéré comme un des plus grands orateurs de Rome et les stylistes de la prose. Les lettres familières de Cicéron sont une série de lettres écrites à divers fonctionnaires, dirigeants et particuliers tout au long de Rome au cours de la seconde moitié de sa vie. Ammianus Marcellinus (Gronovius, Jacobus, ed.)
Lugduni Batavorum Leiden: apud Petrum. Van der Aa, 1693. Folio in 4s, pp. [xlviii], 514, [xiv] + 18 plates (of which 3 are folding) including portrait frontispiece, plus 2 engraved illustrations: a large depiction of Nicaea to unpaginated leaf 2*4 verso, and a small numismatic head-piece to p.1. Bound without the binder's instructions sometimes found at rear. Title-page in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut initials and some head- and tail-pieces. Occasional very light foxing, a few tiny scorch-holes, repaired closed tear to folding plate opposite p.125 with no loss. Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf with late 19th-century reback in pebble grained leather, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers replaced. Joints a bit rubbed and just starting to weaken, edges worn, corners beginning to fray, a few small scuffs and scrapes, slightly toned endpapers split at hinges but boards still entirely firm. A very good copy. Two MS inscriptions to preliminary blank: Richard Pooler of Holmesdale (lightly crossed through); R. Travers Herford, 'Stand (Oxford), June 1905'. Pooler's inscription repeated on title-page, together with a short code: 'P.T.Pi. H-S-E.' The second inscription is likely that of Richard Travers Herford (1860–1950), the Unitarian minister and scholar of rabbinical literature. In 1886 his first published studies in Talmudics appeared in an article in The Christian Reformer entitled 'The Jerusalem Talmud'. Herford was noted as one of the first Christian scholars of the Pharisees to take a neutral view between Talmud and New Testament, and cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Thomas Pope BLOUNT
[Natural History] ~ WITH SHAKESPEAREAN ADVERTISEMENTS BLOUNT, Sir Thomas Pope A Natural History: Containing Many not Common Observations: Extracted out of the best Modern Writers London. Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. 8vo. [16], 469, [3]. With three pages of terminal advertisements. Contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed, a little bumped to edges, small splits to joints at head and foot, else a crisp and fresh copy. With the bookplate of William Trumbull, Esq, to FEP. Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649-97), politician and writer. A Natural History collects contemporary thinking on a plethora of natural topics: including volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tea, coffee, opium, tobacco (with a separate section on 'Planting and Ordering'), gold, silver, diamonds and bees. With repeated reference to the Philosophical Transactions, the information is gleaned from authors such as Acosta, Borelli, Boyle, Gilbert, Halley, Heylin, Hooke and Willis. Somewhat incongruously, the publisher's advertisements placed at the end of this largely scientific volume are entirely literary. 'A Catalogue of some Plays Printed for R. Bentley' commences with the Beaumont/Fletcher second folio and Shakespeare's fourth folio amongst other large formate works, and is followed by a list of 62 separate plays, including four further titles by the latter: 'Hamlet, Pr of Denmark, a Tragedy', 'Julius Caesar', 'King Lear' and the 'Moor of Venice'. First Edition (?). Softcover. Very good. Small 4to. [8], 47 pp. Original self-wrappers, stitched. Paper stock age-toned and somewhat weak. Preserved in a cloth clamshell case and 4-flap lig-free chemise. An extraordinary "sermon" on Earthquakes by Minister J.D.R. French concerning two "stupendous events," the first occurring on Sept. 8, 1601 ("felt throughout all Europe and parts of Asia") and the second, in England, Sept. 8, 1692. Of particular interest is French's preoccupation with the nature of Earthquakes, their causes, classification, effects (such as noxious vapors), planetary causation of earthquakes (!), why birds are frightened, and much more. Whereas there are some religious elements in the present work, the "sermon" seems to be a mere vehicle for French's fascination with earthquakes; in it he references many classical writers (notably Plato and Agricola) and historic events. In fact French wrote not one but two sermons on Earthquakes. Ours is the first, having been published before the Neopolitan earthquake of Sept. 8, 1694 (ESTC R16606). It is an extraordinary fact that all three Earthquakes in question occurred on Sept. 8 (sic). Scarce: ESTC (R4 … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALLIS, JOHN [NEWTON, ISAAC]
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1693. First collected edition. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THE COLLECTED WORKS of one of Newton's most important precursors, John Wallis, Savilian Professor (1649-1703), containing the first printed appearance of Newton's ideas on fluxions. A staunch promoter of English mathematicians, Wallis repeatedly urged Newton to publish his theories before others laid claim to he work, for the sake of "your Reputation (& that of the nation)" (Gjertsen, Newton Handbook, 605). While Newton resisted for many years, in 1693 Wallis published several letters from Newton in Vol. II of his Opera, thereby introducing the concept of fluxional notation--pricked and dotted letters. In the preface to Vol. I (1695), Wallis refers briefly to Newton's claim to the discovery of Fluxions, while Vol II (1693) has the first full account of Newton's invention of calculus.
The third volume of Wallis's Opera contains previously unpublished correspondence between Newton and Leibniz, the most important items of which are Newton's Epistola prior and Epistola posterior. "These two lengthy letters were sent to Leibniz in 1676 to acquaint him with the main lines of Newton's mathematical development... Epistola prior, beginning with the binomial theorem, went on to describe Newton's work on series... The second letter also contains much discussion on infinite series. It is best known, however, for Newton's reference to powerful and general methods he had developed for the drawing of tangents, the determination of maxima and minima, and the quadrature of curves. These, he added, he p … [Click Below for Full Description]

BENOIST, Elie
Deft: Adrien Beman: 1693. An important work in the history of French Protestantism. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes caused much anti-Protestant feeling and led to exodus from France. Three volumes in five. Full contemporary brown leather, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Frontis engraving to volume one. Title vignettes to each volume. Historiated initials. Owner's bookplate to the inside board of each volume. (Morel de Camennelle - (Marie-Mathieu) former president of the Societe d'Emulation d'Abbeville. [pp. Overall, these works are in sound condition, with bright gilt and attractive boards. A little rubbing to the edges of the boards, but still attractive. Internally, generally clean and tidy. Each volume has an owner's bookplate, with a previous bookplate cut away (presumably) leaving surface loss to the boards. There is significant worm damage to the bottom edge of the latter part of volume III. (slightly affecting text). Vol V has a little wear to the corner of the first few pages (not affecting text).

RAY, John
1693. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Ray was a 17th-century English naturalist known for his plethora of important works on natural sciences, most notably botany and zoology. However, he also published a collection of treatises and essays on natural theology in which he discusses natural phenomena found in the Bible. In his book, 'Three Physico-Theological Discourses', Ray covers causes and effects of the flood of Noah, the creation of man and animals, and God's authority over the earth. Essentially, Ray's 'Discourses' are some of the earliest essays on Biblical geology, fusing science and theology. [Attributes: First Edition]
