Sir Thomas Pope BLOUNT
1693. [Natural History] ~ WITH SHAKESPEAREAN ADVERTISEMENTS BLOUNT, Sir Thomas Pope A Natural History: Containing Many not Common Observations: Extracted out of the best Modern Writers London. Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. 8vo. [16], 469, [3]. With three pages of terminal advertisements. Contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed, a little bumped to edges, small splits to joints at head and foot, else a crisp and fresh copy. With the bookplate of William Trumbull, Esq, to FEP. Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649-97), politician and writer. A Natural History collects contemporary thinking on a plethora of natural topics: including volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tea, coffee, opium, tobacco (with a separate section on 'Planting and Ordering'), gold, silver, diamonds and bees. With repeated reference to the Philosophical Transactions, the information is gleaned from authors such as Acosta, Borelli, Boyle, Gilbert, Halley, Heylin, Hooke and Willis. Somewhat incongruously, the publisher's advertisements placed at the end of this largely scientific volume are entirely literary. 'A Catalogue of some Plays Printed for R. Bentley' commences with the Beaumont/Fletcher second folio and Shakespeare's fourth folio amongst other large formate works, and is followed by a list of 62 separate plays, including four further titles by the latter: 'Hamlet, Pr of Denmark, a Tragedy', 'Julius Caesar', 'King Lear' and the 'Moor of Venice'. Fouquet]
*** A document that plunges us back into the mystery of Fouquet's death : According to the version adopted by Fouquet History died at the fortress of Pignerol in 1680 after 20 years of detention. Why then make a first defence of Fouquet in 1693? 1680 the official thesis of the death of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hakvoord, Berend.
Amsterdam: Aart Wolsgrein, 1693. [8], 440, [20] pp. Contemporary vellum. Bookplate (designed by Anton Pieck) on paste-down. Frontispiece with a few stains, a few dog ears. In very good condition. A Spinozistic work with the outward shape of a reformed catechism, officially banned by the States of Overijssel in 1708. Hakvoord was a Zwolle cantor, cathechist, publisher and author, who, in 1703, published Van Leenhof's scandalous Den hemel op aarden, a treatise on earthly happiness strongly influenced by Spinoza that was banned by the States of Friesland and Overijssel in 1706. The first edition of De schole van Christus was probably published between 1685 and 1689. The present third edition appeared by Aart Wolsgrein, known for publishing heretical works. It was enlarged with several passages that were literally taken from Spinoza's outlawed work; the third image shows an almost literal translation of Spinoza's definitions of 'free' and 'dependent' (Ethics, part 1, definition 7): "And I call free which necessarily exists by its own nature, and is determined bo act solely by itself; but I call forced or unfree which is determined to be or to act in a certain way by something else. From this it necessarily follows that our will is not free but infinitely determined, since God is the cause of its essence and existence and determines it to act or will in this or that manner. Because all there is, is in God; it is governed by Him and cannot be conceived without Him (Acts 17:28, Rom. 11: 36)." Several other editions would appear before the authorities noticed Hakvoord's spinozism … [Click Below for Full Description]

The account dicided into six books, described in detail all events leading up to the siege of Vienna and its aftermath up to the official recognition and crowning of Leopold I in 1689 as King of Hungary. With an extensive index at the end. Nothing personal could be found of the author except what he himself noted on the title-page : « Fray Francisco de Montalbo de la Sagrada Religion de S. Geronimo, Doctor Theologo y Predicator de Su Magestad », so he was a priest, theologian and court preacher. He was also the author of an emblem book for the funeral of the Spanish Queen, Marie Louise de Bourbon, married to Charles II, King of Spain from 1665 to 1700. A very fine copy.

Amsterdam: N.p.: Henricus Koenraad' (i.e. Jan Rieuwiertsz jun.), 1693. First edition in Dutch of TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS, the THEOLOGICAL-POLITICAL TREATISE. 8vo [16 x 20cm], handsomely bound in full vellum with leather bands, spine lettered in manuscript. (xxviii), 360 pp. A very fine and handsome copy of this very scarce first edition printing, the text-block very fresh and clean, a strong impression of the text, the binding as pristine. FIRST ISSUE, FIRST PRINTING OF THE VERY RARE DUTCH EDITION WHICH SPINOZA DID NOT WANT PUBLISHED OUT OF FEAR OF RETRIBUTION. QUITE ELUSIVE, AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS OF THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD. Baruch Spinoza is unquestionably one of the most important philosophers of all time -- and certainly, perhaps the most radical of the early modern period. His thought combines a commitment to Cartesian metaphysical and epistemological principles with elements from ancient Stoicism and medieval Jewish rationalism into a nonetheless highly original system. His extremely naturalistic views on God, the world, the human being and knowledge serve to ground a moral philosophy centered on the control of the passions leading to virtue and happiness. They also lay the foundations for a strongly democratic political thought and a deep critique of the pretensions of Scripture and sectarian religion. Of all the philosophers of the seventeenth-century, perhaps none have more relevance today than Spinoza. Spinoza's aim in TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS, which he completed and published anonymously in 1670, was to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Giacomo Rossi and his successor from 1693, Domenico Rossi, then issued a new, changed edition of the work. Bartoli's etchings were aimed at detail, accurate accuracy and formal, aesthetic reproduction. The place of storage and, in some cases, the bearer of the relief are mentioned, although without indication of size and material. The reliefs are treated primarily as iconographic evidence of the history and culture of Rome.
