Elephant folio (630 x 495 mm); engraved title-page, engraved ?Table des Cartes .? with letterpress paste-over listing 122 subjects (three preliminary leaves, nineteen tables, ninety-nine maps and a one-sheet letterpress text), the volume actually containing seventy-six double-page and twenty-three single page engraved maps, all in original outline colour; eighteen engraved geographical tables and sixty-seven key sheets (eleven maps with both), one sheet of letterpress text, twenty-eight plates of town-plans with 192 images. First and last blanks creased and soiled; the Asia with a lengthy tear restored, Savoy with frayed margins, Moselle with loss to upper and lower borders. Contents otherwise excellent. A.e.g. Paris [but Amsterdam] : Alexis-Hubert Jaillot and Pieter Mortier, 1692 In 1689, the partnership between Jaillot and the Sansons ended; the Sanson sons seem to have been predisposed to assume their partners were cheating them, and the separation was acrimonious. With the end of that partnership, it seems that Jaillot entered into a new partnership with Pieter Mortier (1661-1711) in Amsterdam, to publish a Dutch edition of the Atlas Nouveau, with the title-page and all the maps bearing Jaillot?s Parisian address, and mostly dated 1692. Mortier was of French origin, his grandparents were French refugees who settled i … [Click Below for Full Description]

[xxviii], 420, [16] pp. Cologne [but Venice] : Andrea Poletti, Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (1650-1718) was originally apprenticed to a woodcutter in Ravenna but, in 1665, entered the Franciscan order. A highly respected theologian, he was appointed Father General of the Order in 1699. In parallel, arising from his early prowess as an astronomer, Coronelli began a life-time study of geography, becoming the leading Italian geographer, and geographic publisher, of his day, appointed Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic, and founder of the world?s first geographical society, the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, founded in 1684, to help finance his cartographic projects. More significantly, Coronelli was the greatest globemaker of the period, commissioned to make a pair of floor globes for King Louis XIV, in the preparation of which he spent two years. The finished globes, which survive to this day, on permanent display in the Bibliotheque Nationale, have a diameter of 384 cm (151 inches). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BLOUNT, Thomas Pope.
London: Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. London: Printed for R. Bentley,, 1693. Octavo (158 x 93 mm). Contemporary speckled calf trade binding, red morocco label, spine gilt to compartments, red speckled edges. Small book label of Nicholas Wall to the rear pastedown. Minor chipping around spine ends, slight loss at foot of rear joint, contents clean. A very good copy, and a nice example of trade binding in this period. First edition of Blount's observations on aspects of natural history, including observations on sugar, tea, coffee, opium, tobacco, coconuts, metals, earthquakes and volcanos, among other phenomena. Synthesized from other writers rather than being the product of extensive study by the author, the work acts as a valuable snapshot of late 17th-century views on various elements of natural history. Blount (1649-1697) served as a Whig Member of Parliament from 1679 to 1681 and from 1689 until his death. He turned to literary activities in the final decade of his life, and published essays and biographies along with the present work. Despite the book's subject matter, Bentley's advertisements at the rear of the volume are all for theatrical works; notably, they still list Shakespeare's fourth folio, published eight years earlier and evidently still in stock. We have handled copies of this book in an identical bindings allowing the binding to be identified as trade. With the armorial bookplate of William Trumbull (1639-1716) to the front pastedown. Trumbull served as ambassador to France (1685-6) and to Turkey (1687-91), as Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company (1696 … [Click Below for Full Description]

1693. With two compass cards, 5fold longitudinal reference, and English, French, and German miles indicators. Colored chart in Mercator projection 1:1.55 million engraved by Herman van Loon. (Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1693). Inscribed. 24 1/8 × 33 7/8 in (61.2 × 85.9 cm). Cf. Koeman M. Mor 1, 5 & Phillips 517 & 2848. - On especially strong laid paper with large figurative & multilined typographic watermarks. - Isolated tiny marginal tears especially in the wide white lateral margins and pinhead-small holes at the upper margin of the chart close to the fold, all backed acid-freely. Here also a V-shaped, however, by tone & shape quite unobtrusive tidemark extending 28 cm into the subject widely following coast and compass lines (loxodrome) resp. In the lower half of the chart minor box pleats resulting from print. Otherwise of unused freshness as already Koeman states on the Neptune as such: "Its charts are larger and more lavishly decorated than those of any preceding book of this kind ... This magnificent work was intended more as show-piece than something to be used by the pilots at sea." - Impression from the French original plate with the anchor mark decorated by three fleur-de-lis of the Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine - founded in 1720 - that took over the plates of the Neptune françois in 1751 (Lexikon der Kartographie, vol. The work first appeared around 1685 as part of a series of copper engravings about the Roman antiquities that the painter, copper engraver and publisher Bartoli and the art writer and collector Bellori attempted to preserve and document the "non-literary, pictorial sources of antiquity." Giovanni Giacomo Rossi and his successor from 1693, Domenico Rossi, then issued a new, changed edition of the work. Bartoli's etchings were aimed at detail, accurate accuracy and formal, aesthetic reproduction. The place of storage and, in some cases, the bearer of the relief are mentioned, although without indication of size and material. The reliefs are treated primarily as iconographic evidence of the history and culture of Rome.

Loseo, Niccolo. Lossaeus, Nicolaus
1693. Seventeenth-Century Treatise on Universities and the Law Loseo, Niccolo [d. 1642]. Decisiones Juridicae. De Jure Universitatum. Omnibus Legum Studiosis & in Foro & in Schola Versantibus Apprime Utiles ac Necessariae. Hucusque Plurimum Desideratae. Cologne: Sumptibus Petri Ketteler, 1693. [ii], 381, [59] pp. Octavo (6-1/4" x 3-1/2"). Contemporary vellum, early hand-lettered title to spine. A few minor stains to boards, a few short tears to head of spine, small chip to foot, another short tear to head of front joint. Attractive woodcut head and tail-pieces. Light browning to text, somewhat heavier in places, occasional faint dampspotting. Early owner signature to front endleaves, tiny inkstains and spark burns to a few leaves, internally clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. * Fourth, final and best edition. First published in 1601 as De Jure Universitatum, this is a fascinating treatise on the privileges and immunities of universities under canon law. It is also notable as an early treatise on the law of corporations. Loseo published his book during a particularly tense period for the universities of Europe. As centers of theology, law and the civil service, they had been coping with the effects of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation for nearly two decades. A longer work than its predecessors, the text of the fourth edition is enriched with decisions and opinions. All editions are scarce. OCLC locates 3 copies of the first edition in North America (at Harvard Law School, the University of Chicago and Yale), none of the fourth edition. FONTAINE, Jean de la
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, Libraire sur le Vygendam, 1693. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jean de la Fontaine was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop himself. He wrote for what he intended to be a sophisticated French audience; however, his stories provided important lessons on morality for children and adults alike. Many of Fontaine's fables were adapted from those of Aesop and Phaedrus; though he did take liberties to make them his own.

BLOUNT, Thomas Pope.
London: Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. London: Printed for R. Bentley,, 1693. Octavo (157 x 91 mm). Contemporary speckled calf trade binding, red morocco label, spine decorated gilt in compartments, red speckled edges. Neat contemporary ownership signature to pastedown. Bound with the terminal catalogue of plays published by Bentley. Spine chipped at head, joints cracking and chipped at ends but still holding, small chip to title page, final few leaves lightly stained. A very good copy. First edition of Blount's observations on aspects of natural history, including observations on sugar, tea, coffee, opium, tobacco, coconuts, metals, earthquakes and volcanos, among other phenomena. Synthesised from other writers rather than being the product of extensive study by the author, the work acts as a valuable snapshot of late 17th-century views on various elements of natural history. Blount (1649-1697) served as a Whig MP from 1679 to 1681 and from 1689 until his death. He was a member of the Green Ribbon Club, "a London political club that met at the King's Head tavern in Chancery Lane (at the corner with Fleet Street), deriving its name from the green ribbons worn by members in their hats" (ODNB), and turned to literary activities in the final decade of his life, and published essays and biographies along with the present work. Despite the book's subject matter, Bentley's advertisements at the rear of the volume are all for theatrical works; notably, they still list Shakespeare's fourth folio, published eight years earlier and evidently still in stock. Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
1693. Tavola contenente nove raffigurazioni. [Click Below for Full Description]

Giacomo Filippo AMETI
Acquaforte e bulino, 1693. Dimensioni 1130x835. Once he had realized his project to renovate and enlarge Rome, Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) charged quite a few topographers and agronomists to realize the Roma … [Click Below for Full Description]
