Lugduni Batavorum Leiden: apud Petrum. Van der Aa, 1693. Folio in 4s, pp. [xlviii], 514, [xiv] + 18 plates (of which 3 are folding) including portrait frontispiece, plus 2 engraved illustrations: a large depiction of Nicaea to unpaginated leaf 2*4 verso, and a small numismatic head-piece to p.1. Bound without the binder's instructions sometimes found at rear. Title-page in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut initials and some head- and tail-pieces. Occasional very light foxing, a few tiny scorch-holes, repaired closed tear to folding plate opposite p.125 with no loss. Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf with late 19th-century reback in pebble grained leather, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers replaced. Joints a bit rubbed and just starting to weaken, edges worn, corners beginning to fray, a few small scuffs and scrapes, slightly toned endpapers split at hinges but boards still entirely firm. A very good copy. Two MS inscriptions to preliminary blank: Richard Pooler of Holmesdale (lightly crossed through); R. Travers Herford, 'Stand (Oxford), June 1905'. Pooler's inscription repeated on title-page, together with a short code: 'P.T.Pi. H-S-E.' The second inscription is likely that of Richard Travers Herford (1860–1950), the Unitarian minister and scholar of rabbinical literature. In 1886 his first published studies in Talmudics appeared in an article in The Christian Reformer entitled 'The Jerusalem Talmud'. Herford was noted as one of the first Christian scholars of the Pharisees to take a neutral view between Talmud and New Testament, and cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Thomas Pope BLOUNT
[Natural History] ~ WITH SHAKESPEAREAN ADVERTISEMENTS BLOUNT, Sir Thomas Pope A Natural History: Containing Many not Common Observations: Extracted out of the best Modern Writers London. Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. 8vo. [16], 469, [3]. With three pages of terminal advertisements. Contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed, a little bumped to edges, small splits to joints at head and foot, else a crisp and fresh copy. With the bookplate of William Trumbull, Esq, to FEP. Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649-97), politician and writer. A Natural History collects contemporary thinking on a plethora of natural topics: including volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tea, coffee, opium, tobacco (with a separate section on 'Planting and Ordering'), gold, silver, diamonds and bees. With repeated reference to the Philosophical Transactions, the information is gleaned from authors such as Acosta, Borelli, Boyle, Gilbert, Halley, Heylin, Hooke and Willis. Somewhat incongruously, the publisher's advertisements placed at the end of this largely scientific volume are entirely literary. 'A Catalogue of some Plays Printed for R. Bentley' commences with the Beaumont/Fletcher second folio and Shakespeare's fourth folio amongst other large formate works, and is followed by a list of 62 separate plays, including four further titles by the latter: 'Hamlet, Pr of Denmark, a Tragedy', 'Julius Caesar', 'King Lear' and the 'Moor of Venice'. London: Printed for the Author, at SionÂ’s Colledge, near Cripplegate; and to be sold at Mr. Cockrel, bookseller, at the Sing of the Three Legs in the Poultry, and at Mr. Vaillant, French bookseller, in the Strand, over-against the French SavoyÂ’s Church, 1694., 1693/4. First Edition (?). Softcover. Very good. Small 4to. [8], 47 pp. Original self-wrappers, stitched. Paper stock age-toned and somewhat weak. Preserved in a cloth clamshell case and 4-flap lig-free chemise. An extraordinary "sermon" on Earthquakes by Minister J.D.R. French concerning two "stupendous events," the first occurring on Sept. 8, 1601 ("felt throughout all Europe and parts of Asia") and the second, in England, Sept. 8, 1692. Of particular interest is French's preoccupation with the nature of Earthquakes, their causes, classification, effects (such as noxious vapors), planetary causation of earthquakes (!), why birds are frightened, and much more. Whereas there are some religious elements in the present work, the "sermon" seems to be a mere vehicle for French's fascination with earthquakes; in it he references many classical writers (notably Plato and Agricola) and historic events. In fact French wrote not one but two sermons on Earthquakes. Ours is the first, having been published before the Neopolitan earthquake of Sept. 8, 1694 (ESTC R16606). It is an extraordinary fact that all three Earthquakes in question occurred on Sept. 8 (sic). Scarce: ESTC (R4 … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALLIS, JOHN [NEWTON, ISAAC]
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1693. First collected edition. Contemporary calf. Very Good. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THE COLLECTED WORKS of one of Newton's most important precursors, John Wallis, Savilian Professor (1649-1703), containing the first printed appearance of Newton's ideas on fluxions. A staunch promoter of English mathematicians, Wallis repeatedly urged Newton to publish his theories before others laid claim to he work, for the sake of "your Reputation (& that of the nation)" (Gjertsen, Newton Handbook, 605). While Newton resisted for many years, in 1693 Wallis published several letters from Newton in Vol. II of his Opera, thereby introducing the concept of fluxional notation-pricked and dotted letters. In the preface to Vol. I (1695), Wallis refers briefly to Newton's claim to the discovery of Fluxions, while Vol II (1693) has the first full account of Newton's invention of calculus.
The third volume of Wallis's Opera contains previously unpublished correspondence between Newton and Leibniz, the most important items of which are Newton's Epistola prior and Epistola posterior. "These two lengthy letters were sent to Leibniz in 1676 to acquaint him with the main lines of Newton's mathematical development... Epistola prior, beginning with the binomial theorem, went on to describe Newton's work on series... The second letter also contains much discussion on infinite series. It is best known, however, for Newton's reference to powerful and general methods he had developed for the drawing of tangents, the determination of maxima and minima, and the qua … [Click Below for Full Description]

BENOIST, Elie
Deft: Adrien Beman: 1693. An important work in the history of French Protestantism. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes caused much anti-Protestant feeling and led to exodus from France. RAY, John
1693. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Ray was a 17th-century English naturalist known for his plethora of important works on natural sciences, most notably botany and zoology. However, he also published a collection of treatises and essays on natural theology in which he discusses natural phenomena found in the Bible. In his book, 'Three Physico-Theological Discourses', Ray covers causes and effects of the flood of Noah, the creation of man and animals, and God's authority over the earth. Essentially, Ray's 'Discourses' are some of the earliest essays on Biblical geology, fusing science and theology. [Attributes: First Edition]

ACADÉMIE ROYALE DES SCIENCES [AUZOUT, FRENICLE, HUYGENS, MARIOTTE, PICARD, ROBERVAL, RØMER].
Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1693. First edition. First edition of this superb collection of thirty-one treatises by the leading scientists of seventeenth-century France, almost all of which are published here for the first time. This is one of the earliest important publications of the Académie des Sciences, and one of the most magnificent, and the present copy was probably intended for presentation: it is bound in contemporary calf with the arms of Louis XIV on each cover. Founded on 22 December 1666, one of the principal functions of the Académie was to facilitate publication of the works of its members. Frenicle and Roberval were founding members (as was Huygens), and without the assistance of the Académie it is likely that many of their works would have remained unpublished (only two works by Frenicle and two by Roberval were published in their lifetimes). After the death of Frenicle and Roberval in 1675, their books and manuscripts were entrusted to the astronomer Jean Picard; eight treatises by Huygens were also sent to Picard for publication in this collection. After Picard's death in 1682, publication of the works was brought to fruition by Philippe de la Hire. La Hire also included in the Divers ouvrages five treatises by Picard himself, including an unusual 37-page work on dioptrics, one by Mariotte and two each by Auzout and Rømer. The most important work in the volume is probably Roberval's Traité des indivisibles, composed around the same time as Cavalieri's Geometria indivisibilibus (1635) but independent of it and published here for the first time. LUDLOW, Edmund.
London printed in the year. Being a vindication of Mr. Henderson and Dr. Walker, from the Aldgate chaplain’s vile scandals. To which is annex’d, a manifest proof that Dr. Gauden (not King Charles I.) was the author of Icon basilice (Eikon Basilike), by a late happy discovery of his original papers upon that occasion. In a letter from Lieut. General Ludlow to Dr. Hollingworth. FIRST EDITION, BOUND PAMPHLET1693, no printer or publisher named. Small slim 4to, approximately 190 x 135 mm, 7½ x 5¼ inches, 40 pages, bound in full vellum over boards, single rule gilt border to covers, gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label. Covers slightly bowed and slightly spotted, armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Bulkeley Bandinel, celebrated librarian of the Bodleian (1781-1861), on the front endpaper is the signature of Henry H. Gibbs, later Lord Aldenham (d. 1907) and on the rear pastedown is Lord Aldenham's armorial bookplate, pale brown damp staining throughout, to margins and in places to text, all easily legible. Binding tight and firm. A stained but good working copy of a rare work. Ludlow's name printed on page 34 with the date: October 1. 1692. This is the work of a republican pamphleteer who wrote under the name of General Ludlow, or Edmund Ludlow, Lieut.-general. It concerns the controversy over the authorship of ’Eikon basilike’, which Richard Hollingworth believed was the work of Charles I, whilst the author of this tract, amongst others, believed it to be the work of John Gauden. Madan, in his ’New bibliography of the Eikon basilike’, states that it was in fact w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1693. First edition, second issue (with the correct date on the title page); folio, pp. [8], 94, [10]; 108 engraved plates; 19th century roan-backed marbled boards; joints rubbed, library sticker at base of spine, 2 MHS bookplates and an earlier engraved bookplate of P. "Le Pere Plumier, a monk in the order of St. Francesco di Paula, was an important botantical traveller. Tournefort and he became friends and they herborized together throughout the Midi. After that, Plumier's travels included the Antilles and several long voyages to other islands in the West Indies and to America, where he discovered, drew, and described hundreds of new plants, many of which are shown in his own books, though much of his work had to remain unpublished until Boerhaave and Jean Burmann were able to edit part of his papers, and publish them as the Plantarum Americanarum Fascisculi X in 1755-60" (Hunt). "Plumier was one of the first naturalists interested in the Antilles. He is known for his excellent descriptions and drawings of a great number of species. Although Plumier's herbarium was lost in a shipwreck, his drawings and Surian's herbarium on which Plumier collaborated are extant. Plumeria, an American tree or shrub of the family Apocynaceae, was named in honour of Plumier" (DSB). European Americana 693/137; Hunt 389. JCB p. 275. Ni … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome: Dominico de Rossi, Jo. Jacobi (Jo. Jacobi de Rubeis), August 15, 1693. Oblong folio. 46.5 x 69 cm. (18.25 x 27.25 inches) page size. Suite of 12 engravings. Housed in a custom portfolio with painted boards, leather spine, large embossed leather label, leather ties and leather corners by the celebrated Russian-American binder Alexandr (Sasha) Mosalov. OCLC Number: 504754030Set of 12 engravings of Raphael's frescoes of scenes from the myth of Cupid (also known as Eros) and Psyche in the Villa Farnesina in Rome. Raphael's paintings illustrate part of the story The Metamorphoses of Lucius Apuleius (the only Latin novel to survive in its entirety). In this work, Venus, jealous of a beautiful mortal girl named Psyche, sends Cupid on an errand to punish the girl. Cupid instead falls in love with Psyche, and after a series of secrets, betrayals, and trials, the lovers are reunited, and Psyche is made immortal. The frescoes are painted on the vaults and ceiling above demilune reserves on the ground floor at the end of the entrance hall, now known as the Loggia of Psyche. Images of leafy garlands of fruit accentuate the arches of the vaults, also framing the classical images. The frescoes were commissioned by the Sienese banker Agostino Chigi, called "magnifico" by his peers for his richly decorated villa and the elegant entertainments he hosted there. The paintings were recently restored and the Villa Farnesina is open to the public as a museum. Some foxing [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]
