Amsterdam: N.p.: Henricus Koenraad' (i.e. Jan Rieuwiertsz jun.), 1693. First edition in Dutch of TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS, the THEOLOGICAL-POLITICAL TREATISE. 8vo [16 x 20cm], handsomely bound in full vellum with leather bands, spine lettered in manuscript. (xxviii), 360 pp. A very fine and handsome copy of this very scarce first edition printing, the text-block very fresh and clean, a strong impression of the text, the binding as pristine. FIRST ISSUE, FIRST PRINTING OF THE VERY RARE DUTCH EDITION WHICH SPINOZA DID NOT WANT PUBLISHED OUT OF FEAR OF RETRIBUTION. QUITE ELUSIVE, AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS OF THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD. Baruch Spinoza is unquestionably one of the most important philosophers of all time -- and certainly, perhaps the most radical of the early modern period. His thought combines a commitment to Cartesian metaphysical and epistemological principles with elements from ancient Stoicism and medieval Jewish rationalism into a nonetheless highly original system. His extremely naturalistic views on God, the world, the human being and knowledge serve to ground a moral philosophy centered on the control of the passions leading to virtue and happiness. They also lay the foundations for a strongly democratic political thought and a deep critique of the pretensions of Scripture and sectarian religion. Of all the philosophers of the seventeenth-century, perhaps none have more relevance today than Spinoza. Spinoza's aim in TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS, which he completed and published anonymously in 1670, was to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bartolo, Petra Sancti
Pace Gallery, 1693. Brown Leather. Written in Latin. Transverse folio (19" by 15 1/4"). With 83 leaves of etched plates. Rebound with 19th century leather. Rubbing, light wear to corners and spine. There is a water stain on the bottom of the pages but does not affect the engraving. Large gift inscription on endpaper. Some light foxing on edges and few print stains. Overall clean and binding is tight. The work first appeared around 1685 as part of a series of copper engravings about the Roman antiquities that the painter, copper engraver and publisher Bartoli and the art writer and collector Bellori attempted to preserve and document the "non-literary, pictorial sources of antiquity." Giovanni Giacomo Rossi and his successor from 1693, Domenico Rossi, then issued a new, changed edition of the work. Bartoli's etchings were aimed at detail, accurate accuracy and formal, aesthetic reproduction. The place of storage and, in some cases, the bearer of the relief are mentioned, although without indication of size and material. The reliefs are treated primarily as iconographic evidence of the history and culture of Rome.

David Fleischer (?), Leipzig (?), 1693. No publisher, no place, no year. - Large 4to (33.5x20.5 cm). - [2], 73 (recte 75), 38 p. - In Fraktur. Many errors of pagination. - Much later (late 19th century?) half-clioth, with marble-paper covered hard boards; quite worn. - Rare abbreviated printing of Schonberg's 1693 "magnum opus" (which is of the size of [8], 240, [38], 134, [2] pages). -- For the present copy no publisher's name, publication place or year given. Though the font is identical to that of the well described edition, this is not a direct reprint - the present copy has a somewhat different spatial arrangement, and contains many misprints {for instance, on the title-page "Vatterland" for "Vaterland", etc.) not in the original. WorldCat describes it as : "Vermutlich in Leipzig bei David Fleischer gedruckt"; and the date is likely to be 1693 or close to it. -- Schonberg gives a comprehensive description of mining and of all kind of related practices such as prospecting, underground surveying, tunnel construction, machinery, flood control in mines, washing of ore, assaying, smelting, et., even administration and industrial relation. - The second part, "Redens-arten", gives the terminology af mining in dictionary form. - Much rarer than the original: WorldCat gives only three locations: two in Denmark, and one in Germany. Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. 8vo. [16], 469, [3]. With three pages of terminal advertisements. Contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Philip Lea's uncommon re-issue of the Saxton map of Essex, the first printed map of the county, engraved in 1576. When Lea first published his edition of Saxton's atlas c.1689 this map was not included, replaced by the Ogilby-Morgan map of 1676. Either the Saxton map was not available or needed too much updating. The additions here are considerable: the title is now in English rather than Latin; a plan of Colchester has been added, surrounded by eight armorials; Ogilby's roads are shown; and thew initials W R have been added by the Royal Arms, for William III. Anisson Jean, 1693.
