London: Philip Lea, c.1693. Coloured. 415 x 525mm. Narrow margins, extra margin added at top. Philip Lea's uncommon re-issue of the Saxton map of Essex, the first printed map of the county, engraved in 1576. When Lea first published his edition of Saxton's atlas c.1689 this map was not included, replaced by the Ogilby-Morgan map of 1676. Either the Saxton map was not available or needed too much updating. The additions here are considerable: the title is now in English rather than Latin; a plan of Colchester has been added, surrounded by eight armorials; Ogilby's roads are shown; and thew initials W R have been added by the Royal Arms, for William III. Flechier Esprit
Anisson Jean, 1693. There is a water stain on the bottom of the pages but does not affect the engraving. Large gift inscription on endpaper. Some light foxing on edges and few print stains. Giovanni Giacomo Rossi and his successor from 1693, Domenico Rossi, then issued a new, changed edition of the work. Bartoli's etchings were aimed at detail, accurate accuracy and formal, aesthetic reproduction. QUINTILIAN, Marcus Fabius
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. One of the earliest books on teaching public speaking! Marcus Fabius Quintilianus, or Quintilian, was a 1st-century Roman scholar most remembered for his theoretical textbook, 'Institutio Oratoria'. This work deals with the foundations and development of teaching orations and public speaking. Quintilian's most important point was that speeches provided the message of the speaker being a 'good man' and that there is a direct correlation between the quality of a speech and the quality of a man's character. This book was known to have significant influence on Martial, Seneca, Juvenal, and Saint Augustine, who all credited Quintilian with focusing their orations. This first edition, published in 1693, was the first to be edited with notes and supplemented by Edmund Gibson. [Attributes: First Edition]
