[Stockholm, 1693-1714].. 3 Bde. in einem. 354 Kupferstiche auf 321 teils gefalteten Tafeln. 13 Seiten Register.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Jeremy Taylor
London - Luke Meredith, 1693 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce and early edition of this instructional text, on how to live, and how to prepare for death piously. Sixteenth edition. Collective title of two books of Christian devotion which are described the means and instruments of obtaining every vertue, and the remedies against every vice, and considerations serving to the resisting all temptations. , Together with prayers containing the whole duty of a Christian, and the parts of devotion fitted to all occasions, and furnished for all necessities. Featuring two folding plates, and a frontispiecetoThe Exercises of Holy Dying. However, the last leaf of the text ismissing. The two books represent one of the high points of English prose during the period of the early Stuarts. According to historian Nancy Lee Beaty (1970, The Craft of Dying: A Study in the Literary Tradition of the Ars Moriendi in England), Holy Dying was the artistic climax of a consolatory death literature tradition that had begun with Ars moriendi in the 15th century. Holy Living is designed to instruct the reader in living a virtuous life, increasing personal piety, and avoiding temptations. Holy Dying is meant to instruct the reader in the means and instruments of preparing for a blessed death. Each book contains discussions of theology, moral instruction, often prefaced as The Consideration reduc'd to practise, and model prayers requesting divine assistance in achieving them. Jeremy Taylor was a cleric in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromw … [Click Below for Full Description]

Previous military success at Port Royal had given the English an excess of confidence, which Phips fully exploited in planning his expedition against Quebec, but which quickly evaporated when the under-equipped force discovered the extent of the defenses at Quebec.
