LUDLOW, EDMUND.:
London, printed in the year 1693.. Dr. Walker, from the Aldgate chaplain’s vile scandals. To which is annex’d, a manifest proof that Dr. Gauden (not King Charles I.) was the author of Icon basilice (Eikon Basilike), by a late happy discovery of his original papers upon that occasion. In a letter from Lieut. General Ludlow to Dr. Hollingworth. FIRST EDITION 1693, no printer or publisher named. Small slim 4to, 190 x 135 mm, 7½ x 5¼ inches, 40 pages, bound in full vellum over boards, single rule gilt border to covers, gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label. Covers slightly bowed and slightly spotted, armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Bulkeley Bandinel, celebrated librarian of the Bodleian (1781-1861), on the front endpaper is the signature of Henry H. Gibbs, later Lord Aldenham (d. 1907) and on the rear pastedown is Lord Aldenham's armorial bookplate, light brown damp staining throughout, to margins and in places to text, all easily legible. Binding tight and firm. A good working copy of a rare book. Ludlow's name printed on page 34 with the date: October 1. 1692. This is the work of a republican pamphleteer who wrote under the name of General Ludlow, or Edmund Ludlow, lieut.-general. It concerns the controversy over the authorship of ’Eikon basilike’, which Richard Hollingworth believed was the work of Charles I, whilst the author of this tract, amongst others, believed it to be the work of John Gauden. Madan, in his ’New bibliography of the Eikon basilike’, states that it was in fact written by John Gauden, although it p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Locke, John
London: for A. and J. Churchill. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of John Locke's "enormously influential work" on educational theory (Britannica). "Locke's writings were not confined to political philosophy and epistemology. Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1693), for example, remains a standard source in the philosophy of education. It developed out of a series of letters that Locke had written from Holland to his friend Edward Clarke concerning the education of Clarke's son, who was destined to be a gentleman but not necessarily a scholar. It emphasizes the importance of both physical and mental development-both exercise and study. The first requirement is to instill virtue, wisdom, and good manners. This is to be followed by book learning. For the latter, Locke gives a list of recommended texts on Latin, French, mathematics, geography, and history, as well as civil law, philosophy, and natural science. There should also be plenty of scope for recreation, including dancing and riding" (Britannica). "For Locke the central purpose of education was education into virtue, and this meant training in self-control: 'The Principle of all Vertue and Excellency lies in a power of denying our selves the satisfaction of our own Desires, where Reason does not authorize them' (section 38). Locke did not regard children as innately cruel or malevolent-he thought the cruelty they frequently displayed as having been learned by bad example-but he did see them as naturally wilful and selfish. This was not original sin in the traditional theolo … [Click Below for Full Description]

NIEUHOF, J.
1693. Amsterdam, W. Waasberge, 1693. Folio (315 x 205mm). pp. (6), 208, 258, (9), with engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author, 1 folding engraved map of China and 34 double-page engraved plates and about 100 engravings in the text. Contemporary calf, richly gilt ornamented spine in 7 compartments with red gilt lettered label (head of spine chipped). Third edition of this beautifully illustrated work on China. The first edition was published in 1665. "Jan Nieuhof was a "Dutch traveller and adventurer" (1618-72). Between 1640 and 1644 Nieuhof was serving as an official of the Dutch West India Company in Brazil, but by 1655 he was in Batavia, in Java, as a servant of the Dutch East India Company. From there he accompanied Pieter de Goyer as a member of the Dutch embassy to Peking... In 1665 Nieuhof published what is regarded as the definitive account of the Dutch embassy to Peking, and it is for that he is best known" (Howgego p. 752). The beautifully engraved plates show Chinese towns, Chinese life and animal- and plant life. The present work describes the first embassy of the Dutch East India Company to the court of the Emperor of China in the years 1655-57 in command of Pieter de Goyer and Jakob de Keyser. It is the most profusely illustrated work on China of the period. The Paolinxi plate mentioned in the index is only present in the Latin edition and is always lacking. A fine and clean copy. Castillo y San Juan, Antonio del
First edition of an exceedingly rare Spanish imprint on Peruvian native's census. Castillo served for 24 years in Peru in both civil and military positions; he last worked as an accountant for the tributes paid by the natives. Spanish imprints on Peruvian native's census´ are not common. At the end, Fernandez de Madrigal a member of the Consejo de su Magestad and a Major in the War Council for the Indies and Peru, certifies that Castillo gave a report on the General Numeration of the Indians of such Provinces, and for the reintegration of the Mita of the minerals from Guancabelica and Potosi. A most rare imprint, of which we find no copy anywhere; only a "Copia de un informe, que hizo al... Conde de la Moncloa... Don Pedro Antonio del Castillo y San Juan, Contador que fue de retassas y tributos de aquel Reyno", published in 1689 is found at a Spanish institution.

appresso Gio. [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolet, Francois
A MAJOR CLASSIC IN UROLOGY !! This beautifully illustrated work is of paramount importance in the history of urology. Francois Tolet (1647-1724), who learned lithotomy from Jannot at the Hôtel Dieu, first used Celsus'method and later changed to the 'grand appereil' which, in his hands, reached the peak of its technique. The first detailed description of puncture of the bladder was that of Tolet, who introduced a trocar and tapering cannula through the perineum to one side of the raphe. He modified also some instruments but retained the incisor and dilator of Marinus Sanctus. - cf. Murphy, Hist. of Urology, pp. 71, 77 & 101-102; Heirs of Hippocrates No.660; Kiefer Cat. 570 Ein HAUPTWERK der Urologie ! MARSOLIER Jacques
Guillaume Louis Colomyez 1693 - - Guillaume Louis Colomyez, Toulouse 1693, In 8 (10x17,8cm), (18) 449pp., relié. (18) 449pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

; Speert, pp. 558-566. Petronii, Arbitri [ Petronius Arbiter, Gaius ] & Nodot, François
Joannem Baptistam Langlois, Parisiis [ Paris ], 1693, 1st edition thus. Contemporary full calf, G+. tp+[xxii]+288pp, engraved frontis, printers device to the title, binding rubbed & worn at the edges, with a little loss at the head of the spine, upper hinge cracked but firm, old library mark in the lower compartment of the spine, text clean & bright, title & frontis a little grubby, a previous owner has partly copied the frontis on the recto of the sheet in pencil, pages yellowed a little, a good copy. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ A new translation of Petronius' picaresque novel, which had survived in fragmentary form. This edition, edited by Nodot [ 1650 - 1710 ], contains passages which he claimed had been discoverd in Belgrade during the siege of that city in 1688 ( he describes the discovery in the preface ) but were in fact from his own pen. The 'rediscovered' passages here are printed in italics. Nodot himself was soon exposed as the source of the new material but despite this his passages remained in translations for many years before being fully expurgated. The Satyricon, written around 61AD & first printed in 1664, stands alone in classical literature in that it touches on all matters connected with the everyday luxuries, vices & social manners of the Imperial Age in Rome. The characters are most likely based on real people. Trimalchio, the vulgar & ostentatious millionaire of the Satyricon is the literary model for F Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby - it's original working title was 'Trimalchio's Banquet'. The book contains in chapter 62 an early Werewolf story. Felli … [Click Below for Full Description]
