Paris: Claude Barbin, 1693. Duodecimo, 177 pp., in crushed brown morocco by Sangorski. Scarce seventeenth-century Paris edition of one of the most significant of all imaginary voyages, with clear links to the wider literature of travel and a connection with Quiros. The "south land" is used as the setting for this remarkable work of fiction, 'perhaps the most famous of all the fictitious accounts of Terra Australis' (Mackaness) and 'a major utopia, rich in satire and iconoclasm' (Gibson). Of particular note is the fact that Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first work to use the term to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent.Foigny (circa 1630-1692) had a turbulent life. A promising career as a Franciscan monk was scotched by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. Scandal continued to dog him while he was in Switzerland, and he was forced to leave in 1684 leaving behind a large family and a pregnant maid. Foigny rejoined the Catholic faith, and died in a convent eight years later. In this marvellous novel the hero Sadeur is twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, ultimately being plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Most of the novel is set in western Australia and openly borrows from Dutch voyages in the region, but the hermaphrodite society Sadeur discovers is entirely Foigny's invention; in this Australian world marked by a rational rejection of the body, Sadeur's curiosity and levity about the topic is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nagler II, 2935.27. Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts, ca. 1450-1700, 19. "That Buel was highly regarded by his contemporaries is suggested by the frequency with which he was represented in anthologies. Krautwurst saw him as the most important Nuremberg musician between Hassler and Johann Staden, and his music, which is little known, will no doubt repay further study." FOIGNY, Gabriel de.
London: for John Dunton, 1693. Duodecimo; a very good copy in contemporary plain calf. The very rare and valuable first English edition of this remarkable imaginary voyage, in which Jacques Sadeur makes his way to the southern land. This English language printing of 1693 contains the very first usage of the words 'Australia' and 'Australian' in print. Ordinarily Matthew Flinders is credited as having been the first published author of the name 'Australia', as it appears in his Voyage to Terra Australis. However, Foigny's fantastic story predates this by more than a century.West Australians may be surprised to discover their community reimagined as an idealised society of large-bodied hermaphrodites who live in harmony with one another. Gabriel de Foigny (c.1650-1692) had a turbulent life: a rebellious and libertine character, 'constantly at loggerheads with the church authorities on account of his deplorable lifestyle and unacceptable behaviour' (Howgego), his career as a Franciscan monk was cut short by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. It was during this self-imposed exile that his tale of Jacques Sadeur first appeared, anonymously, in 1676.The narrative of A New Discovery of Terra Incognita Australis purports to be the dying gift of the sailor Sadeur to an anonymous narrator. Twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, Sadeur only survives when he is plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which fortuitously drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Ashore, his luck continues: as an hermaphrodite himself (the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles COTOLONDI
First Edition? A similar edition was published on the same date by the same publisher, but in a slightly larger format, with a different snack, a flagship of different title and without title page red and black. This edition may be a counterfeit. A frontispiece representing Harlequin. Uncommon. Vellum half later. Smooth spine with respect to the red pen. Arlequiniana, which remains a literary curiosity, belongs to a prominent genre of French literature, born in the late seventeenth and flourishing in the first half of the eighteenth it comes to these collections of jokes or stories pleasant or Ana which can be entered with the birth in 1693 Menagiana This kind has the distinction of staging his own author and dialogue with the reader, it seems to have no other purpose than to entertain as it seeks to educate because in this age of censorship, literature created this seemingly light but satirical critique of society and manners mode. Charles Cotolondi wrote several books in this field, including Evremonmania. Harlequin, thanks to the famous theater of the Fair in Paris became very famous and was a kind, and it is deliberately Cotolondi actually a kind of wise fool, like a Scapin for Molière. The set is a series of conversations that combines stories and jokes. A table of strong caustic materials retrieves all subjects, death, Cardinal Mazarin, caution husbands or Mr. Lully. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. LUDLOW, Edmund.:
London, printed in the year 1693.. Being a vindication of Mr. Henderson and Dr. Walker, from the Aldgate chaplain’s vile scandals. To which is annex’d, a manifest proof that Dr. Gauden (not King Charles I.) was the author of Icon basilice (Eikon Basilike), by a late happy discovery of his original papers upon that occasion. In a letter from Lieut. General Ludlow to Dr. Hollingworth. FIRST EDITION 1693, no printer or publisher named. Small slim 4to, approximately 190 x 135 mm, 7½ x 5¼ inches, 40 pages, bound in full vellum over boards, single rule gilt border to covers, gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label. Covers slightly bowed and slightly spotted, armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Bulkeley Bandinel, celebrated librarian of the Bodleian (1781-1861), on the front endpaper is the signature of Henry H. Gibbs, later Lord Aldenham (d. 1907) and on the rear pastedown is Lord Aldenham's armorial bookplate, light brown damp staining throughout, to margins and in places to text, all easily legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy only. Ludlow's name printed on page 34 with the date: October 1. 1692. This is the work of a republican pamphleteer who wrote under the name of General Ludlow, or Edmund Ludlow, Lieut.-general. It concerns the controversy over the authorship of ’Eikon basilike’, which Richard Hollingworth believed was the work of Charles I, whilst the author of this tract, amongst others, believed it to be the work of John Gauden. Madan, in his ’New bibliography of the Eikon basilike’, states that it was in fact written by John Gauden, … [Click Below for Full Description]

MATHER, COTTON
Printed first, at Boston in New England, and reprinted in London for John Dunmow, 1693. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of this famous history of the Salem witch trials, a classic of colonial American history. Cotton Mather, scion of the notable Boston family, entered Harvard College at twelve and graduated three years later. He was elected a fellow of Harvard in 1690 before he turned thirty. At the time of the Salem trials in 1692, Mather was already one of the most respected divines in New England. Author of over 400 books and tracts, he had an enormous impact on American thought at the turn of the eighteenth century. Wonders of the Invisible World is one of Mather’s two best known works, the other being Magnalia Christi Americana. “This is one of the most important and rarest of all Mather’s works – his contemporary history of the Salem trials . . . Historically, Mather’s report on the trials is the last important exposition of witchcraft that was written while the superstition remained generally unquestioned. Mather described the trials objectively, but from the viewpoint of a firm believer in witches” (Streeter). More than one hundred suspected witches were arrested, and nineteen were hanged. Mather’s account, written in the summer of 1692 while the trials were still being held, includes detailed descriptions of the cases and the surrounding events. By the fall the witch hunt had subsided, and Increase Mather led the backlash against the prosecutors. In order to place Mather’s position on witchcraft in perspective, it is interesting to note the beliefs of other intellectuals of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saint-Simon, Claude de Rouvroy, duc de, French statesman (1607-1693).
1693. 1 half page on a single 4to leaf (242 x 180 mm). Receipt to Jean Brunet, receiver at La Rochelle "de la somme de mille quarante livres qu'il nous a envoyée par une lettre de change tirée sur Claude Laquain banquier à Paris". The courtier and father of the renowned memoirist Saint-Simon signed this receipt at the very end of his long life, just over two months before his death, as is graphically displayed in his shaky signature. Saint-Simon had entered the service of Louis XIII in 1627 and rose to become a royal councillor. His lands were in the vicinity of La Rochelle, given him by royal grant after the fall of the Huguenot-dominated city in 1628. Although, by the end of his life, under Louis XIV he held little effective power in the royal court he maintained an unusual (even excessive) sense of the dignity and importance of his family, a state of mind doubtless bequeathed to his son. - Transverse fold; some light foxing. Provenance: Charavay, Paris.
