BOUHOURS (Dominique).
Tome 10, fascicule 1, 1988. pp. 43-58. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Barbette, Pauli.
Joannem Wolters Amstelaedami, 1693. 12mo; Engraved title page; [22],543,[35]. In an attractive modern binding of half calf, marbled sides, raised bands to the spinem small floret ornaments in compartments, two lettering pieces, red and brown leather. A Very Good copy indeed. With the old ownership inscription of Robert Travers. From a small collection of other medical books I have had from Travers' library I know him to be the Robert Travers, Surgeon, of Trinity College Dublin. *** Paul Barbette (5 February 1620, Strasbourg[1] – 1666?, Amsterdam) was a celebrated Dutch physician. After finishing his medicine studies at Leiden University in 1645, he practised both medicine and surgery in Amsterdam. He was a determined enemy of bleeding in all cases, relying chiefly on sudorifics. He proposed the operation of gastrostomy in cases of intussusception of the bowels, and introduced some improvements in surgical instruments. He wrote many works, which have been frequently reprinted, and he was held as a high authority in his day. His writings, however, contain little that is original, but they display much learning and acquaintance with his profession. They are in Dutch and Latin, and have been collected in Opera omnia medica et chirurgica (Amsterdam, 1672, 8 volumes), which was translated in Italian, German, French, and English. La Loubere, Simon de
London: F.L. for Tho. Horne, Francis Saunders, and Tho. Benner, 1693. First English edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Two volumes bound in one. The account of de La Loubere's embassy to Siam on behalf of Louis XIV, considered to be the best account of Thailand of the time, praised by Gottfried Leibniz as containing solid truths and research of great consequence. The account was first published in France in 1691, but only in duodecimo, not in folio. It was still influential at the time of de La Loubere's death, praised as the best example of works of its kind by the chancellor of the Academie Francaise. It remains an important source on 17th century Siam, as the archives of the country were destroyed by fire in 1767. It includes 11 full page copper engraved plates on a wide range of subjects, including native plants, local dress, floor plans of temples and palaces, the king's ceremonial vessels, Siamese music, sculpture, Siamese alphabet, chess, and smoking. The Sun King sent de La Loubere to Siam in the hopes of converting the ancient civilization to Catholicism and benefiting from trade. The Siamese king, who sent an embassy to Versailles at the conclusion of de La Loubere's embassy, also wanted to impress the French king, and to use the French as a counterbalance to Dutch ambitions. Louis XIV received the Siamese embassy at Versailles in the newly constructed Hall of Mirrors; he was dressed in a gem covered garment and seated on a diamond encrusted cushion. De La Loubere (1642 - 1729) traveled to the court of the King … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Grand, Marc-Antoine)
56 S. Rückenbroschur. 4. Fromm IV, 14479 Nicht bei Huelke-Etzler. - Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Louis Dominique Cartouche (eigentlich Garthausen geb.

LUDLOW, Edmund.:
London, printed in the year 1693. Being a vindication of Mr. Henderson and Dr. Walker, from the Aldgate chaplain's vile scandals. To which is annex'd, a manifest proof that Dr. Gauden (not King Charles I.) was the author of Icon basilice (Eikon Basilike), by a late happy discovery of his original papers upon that occasion. In a letter from Lieut. General Ludlow to Dr. Hollingworth. FIRST EDITION 1693, no printer or publisher named. Small slim 4to, approximately 190 x 135 mm, 7½ x 5¼ inches, 40 pages, bound in full vellum over boards, single rule gilt border to covers, gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label. Covers slightly bowed and slightly spotted, armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Bulkeley Bandinel, celebrated librarian of the Bodleian (1781-1861), on the front endpaper is the signature of Henry H. Gibbs, later Lord Aldenham (d. 1907) and on the rear pastedown is Lord Aldenham's armorial bookplate, light brown damp staining throughout, to margins and in places to text, all easily legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy only. Ludlow's name printed on page 34 with the date: October 1. 1692. This is the work of a republican pamphleteer who wrote under the name of General Ludlow, or Edmund Ludlow, Lieut.-general. It concerns the controversy over the authorship of 'Eikon basilike', which Richard Hollingworth believed was the work of Charles I, whilst the author of this tract, amongst others, believed it to be the work of John Gauden. Madan, in his 'New bibliography of the Eikon basilike', states that it was in fact written by John Gauden, although it pro … [Click Below for Full Description]
