[Click Below for Full Description]

This beautiful rare map of the West coast of Africa depicts part of the region of modern day Angola near the Congo River. Extends from Cabo Ledo north past Rio Dande located just north of Luanda or Sa Paula de Loanda as it was known at the time, the capital city of Angola. Beautifully details the coastline near Loanda with forts and interior details noted. A legend near the right border above the title includes notes on navigation and important landmarks marked on the map. A beautiful large compass rose adorns the top left. The map is in good condition with minor edge wear. Top left border shows some damage with small part of border ripped. Small rust stain near left border, later horizontal fold, Minor foxing throughout and wear near fold. Original pressmark is visible. Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois" or "Suite de Neptune Francois", considered to contain the most beautiful examples of cartographic art. Most of the charts from the atlas were based on earlier manuscripts by the Portuguese, who were the first explorers of the African coast. This chart is a beautiful example of one of those charts. Sold as is.
