MONRO, Alexander]
London: printed for Joseph Hindmarsh at the Golden-Ball over against the Royal Exchange. 4to., (12) + 89 + (1)pp., collating as ESTC but probably wanting an initial blank, a very good crisp copy bound in modern half calf gilt lettered. First edition. This was a response to attacks on the episcopal party in Scotland by the journalist and pamphleteer George Ridpath. 'Soon after the revolution of 1688 Ridpath became active as a journalist in the capital. Writing under the pseudonym Will Laick, in 1693 he made a violent attack on the episcopal party in Scotland in An Answer to the Scottish Presbyterian Eloquence> and A Continuation of the Answer.> These were criticized, with equal virulence, in Alexander Munro's Apology for the Clergy of Scotland> and The spirit of calumny and slander examined, chastised, and exposed, in a letter to a malicious libeller addressed to Mr George Ridpath, newsmonger, near St Martins-in-the-Fields,> which identified Ridpath as ‘the head of the presbyterian party in Scotland’. Ridpath subsequently responded in The Scots Episcopal Innocence> and The queries and protestation of the Scots clergy against the authority of the Presbyterian general assemblies> (both 1694). Two years later he was apparently involved in surveillance activities against the bishop of Glasgow and Alexander Munro.' [G. A. Aitkin, rev. John R. Young in ODNB] [Attributes: First Edition]

ARCHITECTURE. CIAMPINI, Joannis.
Komarek, Rome., 1693. First edition. Folio. pp [xvi], 217, [i errata], [ii bookseller's catalogue]. Allegorical engraved frontispiece by Arnoldo van Westerhout after Giovanni Battista Lenardi. 35 engraved plates, 10 of which are folding. Early eighteenth century full calf with raised band and gilt decorations.Giovanni Giustino Ciampini (1633-1698) was an eminent antiquary whose position as Magister brevium gratiae in the Apostolic Chancery in Rome enabled him to pursue his interests in books, coins, statues and the sciences, as well as archaeology. The present title is one of two major illustrated works of continuing utility and is largely concerned with the ancient churches built in Rome by Constantine the Great. The latter part of the book goes to the Campagna, Constantinople (including the Haghia Sofia) and Palestine (including the Church of the Nativity). Many of the plates are of an unprecedented architectural accuracy and depict features which have since been lost to change and decay.Sympathetically rebacked with decorated spine relaid, front endpapers renewed. Very good indeed. Internally exceptionally clean.

Cambridge: J. Hayes for W. Graves, 1693. Cambridge:: J. Hayes for W. Graves,, 1693.. First English Edition.. 8vo.. Thomas Walker, encomnium. A-X8. [Lacks A1, imprimatur leaf] Modern calf-backed leatherette, title gilt, repair to outer margin of t.p. (no text loss), signature of Johannis Gardner" on t.p., sig. of Abijah Bigelow on f.f.e.p., dated gift entry on verso of rear end paper dated 1876; a few old stains, light paper toning, otherwise a nice copy. Knatchbull, Sir Norton, first baronet (1602Ð1685), politician and biblical scholar. "In 1659 Knatchbull published Animadversiones in libros novi testamenti. The work demonstrates a considerable breadth of learning, reflecting the author's use of his large library. It is also intrepid in its arguments for considering historical circumstances and contemporary idiom, and for suggesting the existence of scribal errors in the transmission of the sacred text. A second edition with appendix was published in 1672 and a third, emended, at Oxford in 1677; a fourth edition, in English, appeared in 1692, entitled Annotations upon some Difficult Texts in All the Books of the New Testament (Cambridge, 1693). The preface states that Knatchbull undertook the translation, probably shortly before his death. It is preceded by an ÔEncomiastick upon the most Learned and Judicious AuthorÕ, by Thomas Walker of Sidney Sussex College. The work was well received in England and abroad, was reprinted on the continent, and was held in high regard well into the eighteenth century." [Oxford DNB] Wing K672. ESTC r4721.T.C. II,451.

Blount, Sir Thomas Pope
London: Printed for R. Bentley, 1693. Pp. [16], 469, [3, ads]. Contemporary plain full panelled calf, rebacked at some point, god and strong, with a little general wear and some rubbing, corners more worn and rounded, but firm. Contents clean and tight; good margins; title page strengthened along hinge with Japanese tisse. Contemporary engraved armorial bookplate to the verso of the title page above which written in manuscript '11. Apr. 1728 Collated & perfect.' A very good copy. [As its subtitles suggest, this was a work of synthesis rather than direct and original observation. Blount was a tireless reader and accumulator of other writers' wisdom - his most notable work, Censura Celebrorum Authorum (1690), was a collection of things famous authors had said about each other and in this work he brings together observations from a wide range of contemporary authorities, accommodating them in an overall argument which reflects a belief in the divine authorship of the universe. As he writes in his preface, ‘Every Flower of the Field, every Fibre of a Plant, every Particle of an Insect, carries with it the Impress of its Maker, and can (if duly consider'd) read us Lectures of Ethicks or Divinity'. Among the aspects of natural history(amber, coral, tea and coffee, silver, diamonds, glow-worms, spiders etc.) that Blount considers are ‘VULCANO's, or SUBTERRANEAN FIRES' - Admin (Dr Ralph Harrington); Volcanism Blog.] . Harmer, Anthony (Henry Wharton)
London: Printed for Randall Taylor, near Stationers-Hall(1693). First edition. Full leather. viii, 200 pp. The History of the Reformation by Gilbert Burnet, was first undertaken as a rebuttal of a French work on the English Reformation that asserted it was a political act undertaken by a corrupt king (see Wikipedia). Wharton, perhaps as the result of personal animosities between himself and Burnet, wrote this work exposing errors in Burnet's work, which caused a further rift between Burnet and his allies and Wharton (Dictionary of National Biography). Henry Wharton was an English author and divine, preaching throughout the province of Canterbury with the permission of William Sancroft (Dictionary of National Biography). GOOD condition, ex-theological library. Binding repaired with brown cloth tape, bearing library marks and labels. Pastedown and minor library stamping in the interior. Leather scuffed, with minor staining and soiling. Heavy bumping and scuffing along the extremities. Binding cracked and separate along the front hinge, with the front cover detached from the text block but still intact otherwise. First endpaper DETACHED and laid in, with the top portion torn off. Brown at the Black-Swan and Bible without Temple-Bar, 1693. First edition. Small octavo, contemporary calf (boards a little warped; short splits at head and tail of spine); front pastedown with early armorial bookplate of Francis Stratford, Esq.; half title Sir Walter Raleigh's history of the reigne of William the First; frontispiece engraving of Sir Walter Raleigh signed F.H. van Hove, with cartouches of William I and his coat of arms; title page; pp [1 blank], [3 publisher's preface], [1 imprimatur "December 31, 1692, Edm. Although ostensibly the work of the great Elizabethan navigator, explorer and man of letters Sir Walter Raleigh, this history of William the Conqueror has been attributed by some commentators, at least in part, to Samuel Daniel. Sabin 67599; Brushfield, Bibliography of Sir Walter Raleigh, 240: "The introduction (p. 1-24) may have been written by Raleigh; the breviary (p. 24-77) appears to be an epitome of a section of Daniel's The collection of the history of England, but may antedate it."
[Click Below for Full Description]
