[Click Below for Full Description]

SALMON, William
1693. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The Baboon is an evil natured beast, and will imitate all human actions, they delight much to wear garments, are lustful as goats, and will attempt to lye with all sorts of women!" - William Salmon, Seplasium A very rare and important 17th-century book on medicine, pharmacology, minerology, zoology, and botany by William Salmon. Salmon, the self-proclaimed "Professor of Physick" as known for his plethora of medical texts, mostly pertaining to the use of classical medical techniques. Salmon deviates from his norm in this work by exploring other natural sciences. While most of his writing comes from a medical understanding, he ventures into topics such as: · Making of white lead, brass, and silver · Making of beer and ale · Extracting phosphorus out of urine · Making gunpowder · Sugar refining · Sources of diseases; particularly rare gemstones and tobacco · Animal behaviors · Cryptozoology: Unicorns, satyrs and lycopanthers However, because of his focus on medicine he does present an article on animals and plants and their medical properties and healing salves. According to Alden, this book is a good reference for West Indian plants and medicines. [Attributes: First Edition]

ACADÉMIE ROYALE DES SCIENCES [AUZOUT, FRENICLE, HUYGENS, MARIOTTE, PICARD, ROBERVAL, RØMER].
L’Imprimerie Royale, Paris. First edition of this superb collection of thirty-one treatises by the leading scientists of seventeenth-century France, almost all of which are published here for the first time. This is one of the earliest important publications of the Académie des Sciences, and one of the most magnificent, and the present copy was probably intended for presentation: it is bound in contemporary calf with the arms of Louis XIV on each cover. Founded on 22 December 1666, one of the principal functions of the Académie was to facilitate publication of the works of its members. Frenicle and Roberval were founding members (as was Huygens), and without the assistance of the Académie it is likely that many of their works would have remained unpublished (only two works by Frenicle and two by Roberval were published in their lifetimes). After the death of Frenicle and Roberval in 1675, their books and manuscripts were entrusted to the astronomer Jean Picard; eight treatises by Huygens were also sent to Picard for publication in this collection. After Picard?s death in 1682, publication of the works was brought to fruition by Philippe de la Hire. La Hire also included in the Divers ouvrages five treatises by Picard himself, including an unusual 37-page work on dioptrics, one by Mariotte and two each by Auzout and Rømer. The most important work in the volume is probably Roberval?s Traité des indivisibles, composed around the same time as Cavalieri's Geometria indivisibilibus (1635) but independent of it and published here for the first time. The treatises by Frenicle, a cl … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOCKE, John]
London: for A. and J. Churchill, 1693. London: for A. and J. Churchill,, 1693. Corrected and preferred edition Octavo (174 x 103 mm). Recent mottled calf to style, covers ruled in blind, red morocco label. Small abrasion to front cover, marginal stain to final few leaves; overall a clean, attractive copy. Second, preferred and corrected edition, matching Yolton's points. Some Thoughts Concerning Education occupies an important place in the history of educational theory. The ideas in the book originated from a series of letters which Locke wrote in 1684 from the Netherlands to advise a friend, Edward Clarke, on his son's education. Locke put forward the idea of the pupil as a malleable entity, as a person who could be improved by a good education, but also corrupted by a bad one. As of such, the purpose of education is to turn children, not naturally evil but still selfish, into self-controlled individuals who can check their passions through reason. The order of the first two virtually identical editions has been contentious. Wing lists the present edition giving "Patronage" (A3v, l. 19) as the first, and the edition with this word misspelt as the second. However Yolton has more recently reversed this, and writes that "the second edition can only have been printed within a short period after the first, while the publisher still had sheets of the first on hand, since Locke's own copy … is a mixed-sheet copy. Locke was known to be concerned at the quality of the printing of his writings, and to try to read the sheets before they were finally printed … the Churchills complet … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERDUC, Jean-Baptiste
1693. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jean-Baptiste Verduc was a French pathologist and surgeon in the 17th-century. While his works are relatively unknown and unused compared to that of, say, Pierre Dionis, Verduc does provide interesting accounts of medicine and cures in his 'Les Operations de la Chirurgie avec Pathologie.' In this work he tells of cures for cystic goiters, in particular the story of a Swiss man whose goiter was so large it hung down over his breast bone! Verduc discusses the dangers of operating on such diseases. (Warfield). [Attributes: First Edition]

Hilary, St. (i.e, Hilarius).
Excudebat Franciscus Muguet, 1693. Highly respected for its apparatus and editorship and esteemed for the typography, this is generally referred to as "the Maurist edition" of the works of St. Hilary. The chief editor was Pierre Coustant (1654-1721), a French Benedictine scholar of the Congregation of Saint-Maur, who was selected by the Abbot General of the Maurist congregation to edit this work because Coustant had done an outstanding job editing St. Augstine. The printer Muguet was "Regis & illustrissimi Archiepiscopi Parisiensis typographus," and has presented the text in fine roman type, with some italic, in several point sizes; and graced the work with two finely engraved headpieces and some large engraved initials. This is a very large & heavy book and will require additional shipping charges.
