A Map of Essex, newly revised & Amended by P. Lea

1693 - London: Philip Lea, c.1693. Coloured. 415 x 525mm. Narrow margins, extra margin added at top. Philip Lea's uncommon re-issue of the Saxton map of Essex, the first printed map of the county, engraved in 1576. When Lea first published his edition of Saxton's atlas c.1689 this map was not included, replaced by the Ogilby-Morgan map of 1676. Either the Saxton map was not available or needed too much updating. The additions here are considerable: the title is now in English rather than Latin; a plan of Colchester has been added, surrounded by eight armorials; Ogilby's roads are shown; and thew initials W R have been added by the Royal Arms, for William III.         1693 VITAE PAPARUM AVENIONENSIUM Ecclesiastical History VELLUM Stephanus Baluzius (Étienne Baluze)

Paris, France: Apud Franciscum Muguet Regis, Cleri Gallicani, 1693. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. VITAE PAPARUM AVENIONENSIUM: Hoc Est HISTORIA PONTIFICUM ROMANORUM Qui in Gallia Sederunt AB Anno Christi MCCCV Usque Ad Annum MCCCXCIV. By STEPHANUS BALUZIUS (Étienne Baluze). TOMUS PRIMUS / TOMI PRIMI (Tome One). VELLUM BOUND Ecclesiastical Papal History. VERY SCARCE 1693 FIRST EDITION. PARISIIS (Paris) : Apud Franciscum Muguet Regis, Cleri Gallicani. MDCXCIII (1693). First Edition. The book was reprinted, most notably in 1916 and 1928. Those later editions can be found, but the 1693 first edition is almost impossible to find outside of a few Rare Book Rooms of Major Universities and National Libraries. Vellum Covers, manuscript titling on the spine, 8" x 10". Pagination: [1 leaf] front free endpaper, [1] title page, [1] blank verso, [4] Epistola, [16] Prefatio, [1] blank, [1] PLATE of PAPAL COINAGE, 1,478 numbered columns / 739 pages (text pages numbered by column only, two columns per page), [30] Index and Errata. Collated page for page with the 1693 First Edition Copy in the Rare Book Holdings of the Montserrat Abbey Library. That copy was digitized in 2011. There is a label size bookplate of Jacobi Manzoni at the upper corner of the front pastedown. Jacobi Manzoni / Giacomo Manzoni, was an important Italian book collector. Manzoni was born in 1816 in Lugo, Romagna, into an aristocratic family. He was involved in many aspects of Italian life, but his main pursuit, which he began at a very early age, was collecting books and manuscripts. At the time of his death in 1889, he left a library of approximately 25,000 rare and highly valued volumes. This is one of those volumes. Condition: The Vellum Covers have yellowed and toned, the spine has substantially darkened, there is some peeling and cracking to the covers' edges and 2" of splitting at the top and bottom of the spine folds, the edges and spine ends are shelf worn and rubbed through at places, nonetheless the covers are solid, doing their job well, and attractive in a Harry Potter's Hogwarts Library way. There is a bit of writing on the endpapers, a small bookplate to the front pastedown (as noted above) and a small label with numbers to the rear pastedown; the front free endpaper is creased, the title page has some edge wear and small edge chips, there is light toning and foxing throughout, overall the inner pages are very nice - tight, bright, clean, and unmarked.

NOTIZIE ISTORICHE DELLE CHIESE FIORENTINE. Divise ne' suoi Quartieri, Opera di Giuseppe Richa della Compagnia di Gesù.

Nella Stamperia di Pietro Gaetano Viviani in Via de' Servi, all'Insegna di GianoPrima edizione. Opera completa in dieci volumi. Cm.27x19,5. Pg.3804 complessive. Esemplari in barbe. Galassi, Andrea Scacciati, etc. Figure calcografiche nel testo, capilettera e cartigli ornamentali incisi.

Madrid: Antonio Roman 4to. [16] ff., 666 pp., [1] f. (without the portrait).. 1693 Jesuit priest Francisco del Castillo (1615?-73) was born in Lima and educated in the Jesuit Colegio Real de San Martín. He entered the Society of Jesus as a novice on the last day of 1631 and took his final vows in early 1650. Even before that, he had begun evangelic work among the black population and notably, as did the Testerian method used in Mexico among the Indian population, he => used drawings in support of his oral delivery. Castillo studied the Chiriguano language (of the Guarani family) in expectation of being a missionary among them, but was sent to Chile as a personal chaplain to the nephew of the Viceroy instead; and upon returning to Lima a few years later he learned that the mission to the Chiriguanos had been abandoned. Then, redoubling his work among the blacks, he learned "Angolan" (i.e., probably Bantu) in order to serve his flock, and he is said to have composed doctrinal works in that language which he left in manuscript. His work among the blacks was especially directed to those ("los desamparados") who had been abandoned, often to helpless homelessness, by their owners. Among other benefactions and with the support of the viceroy, the Conde de Lemos, he constructed a church for them, La Iglesia de los Desamparados; the biography devotes pp. 270 to 278 to describing it and pp. 294 to 312 to describing its statuary. => These pages (and the sheer number of them!) suggest the richness that serious sponsors could set forth even for the humblest in late-17th-century Peru. => The present biography is by a fellow Jesuit who knew Castillo. NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, CCPBE, and the OPAC of the Spanish National Library show two U.S. library copies, plus one in Scotland, one in Mexico, six in Spain, and one in Chile. Provenance: On title-page, old inked ownership inscription of a Jesuit colegio. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of button and loop ties, lacking the portrait. Front free endpaper with faint old pencilled notes, rear pastedown missing exposing lining, all edges red. A few short marginal tears or paper flaws, and one lower corner lost touching text (taking a bit of print but not sense); in all, a very good, clean, untattered copy.

Toulouse: Guillaume Louis Colomyez, 1693. Fine. Guillaume Louis Colomyez, Toulouse 1693, In 8 (10x17,8cm), (18) 449pp., relié. - Rare first edition published just days before the History of Ximenez Flechier whose comparison provoked a controversy until the nineteenth century. While the book Fléchier tends to illustrate the holiness of Cardinal, one of Marsolier more critical, addresses "libertines, that party philosophers began to look up." Full contemporary calf. Back with five nerves ornate coffered and gilded finials. Part of title in red morocco. Small tear without loss of the lower cap, scuffs on covers, top corners and recessed bottom corners bumped. About this book, D'Alembert officially proclaim the superiority of the book Marsolier, while specifying that Fléchier "would have removed its competitor, if instead of considering Ximenes as a saint and politics, he had made a hypocrite sublime by skillfully used his views and beliefs of peoples handling with address, to cement his power, weapons that religion made him so powerful in the hands of the minister. "(quoted by Stephen D'Alembert Delacroix in his History of Fléchier) . Bookplate manuscript of the time the back of the page. Rare copy of the first edition of this text will know a great success and many reprints. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Madrid: Antonio Roman 4to. [16] ff., 666 pp., [1] f. (without the portrait).. 1693 Jesuit priest Francisco del Castillo (1615–73) was born in Lima and educated in the Jesuit Colegio Real de San Martín.

A New Discovery of Terra Incognita Australis, or the Southern World by James Sadeur a French-man

London: for John Dunton, 1693. Duodecimo, shaving to head of final pages; a very good copy in contemporary plain calf, later lettering on the spine; slight wear to head and tail of spine but in very good condition. An antipodean hermaphrodite utopia. The first English language use of the words 'Australia' and 'Australians' in print. This rare English translation of 1693 contains the first anglicized usage of the words 'Australia' and 'Australian'. Ordinarily Matthew Flinders is credited as the first published author of the name 'Australia', as it appears in his Voyage to Terra Australis. However, Foigny's fantastic story predates this by more than a century.A curious book by any standards, A New Discovery of Terra Incognita Australis relates the adventures of hermaphrodite narrator Jacques Sadeur, born at sea and shipwrecked several times before reaching the southern continent. Here he finds an idealised society of large bodied hermaphrodites who live in harmony with one another. The author, Gabriel de Foigny, was a rebellious and libertine character 'constantly at loggerheads with the church authorities on account of his deplorable lifestyle and unacceptable behaviour' (Howgego). In the preamble to this book, Foigny leans on the reputation of Marco Polo, Magellan and de Quiros to bolster the factuality of the amazing southern continent, and even claims to have received written testimony from Sadeur himself to add credibility to the story. Indeed, a contemporary English newspaper account presents this publication as a true and factual voyage account.First published in Switzerland in 1676 (where it was promptly banned by church authorities), the book was republished in several locations - of which this English edition of 1693 and the Dutch edition of 1701 are notably rare.

Politica predicavel e doutrina moral do bom governo do mundo ?.

Lisbon, Na Officina de Miguel Deslandes, 1693. - Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Numerous woodcut initials, several large and elegant. Woodcut headpieces (one large and nicely executed). Typographical headpieces. Large woodcut tailpieces. Text in 2 columns. (14 ll.), 760 pp. Folio (29.5 x 20.4 cm.), contemporary speckled sheep (some wear to corners and head of spine; lacks free endleaves), spine gilt with raised bands in five compartments (some rubbing to bands), crimson leather lettering piece in second compartment from head (faded), gilt letter. Small hole in leaf B6 with loss of page numbers for pp. 23-4. Small tear repaired at lower outer corner of leaf F1. Very small worm trace in lower blank margin of quire G and in leaves H3-5, R2-4, and Ss5-Tt6, never affecting text. Some foxing and occasional small dampstains. Overall in good to very good condition. Contemporary ink inscription on title page: "Morgado de V.ª Cova." ---- FIRST EDITION; a second edition appeared in 1702. This advice on how to govern was published posthumously and dedicated by Fr. Joseph Evangelista, Ministro Provincial of the Terceira Ordem, to the then four-year-old prince, Dom João, who succeeded his father D. Pedro II in December 1706, and was crowned as D. João V on January 1, 1707. When written, the book was probably intended for the ill-fated son and heir of D. João IV, who became King Afonso VI in 1656. Taking a religious and moral tone, the work offers sound counsel on the powers and duties of a ruler. In addition to many biblical and other religious references, there are also references to classical authors and to more modern secular authorities. One curious feature of this volume is that the earliest license is dated 3 October 1652. Several more date from 1655 and 1656, then two from 1670, one from 1673, another from 21 August 1692, and the final three dated 9, 10, and 12 October 1693. Thus it took over 40 years to obtain the approval of the authorities to print the book. According to Porbase, there is a variant issue in which the final license is dated 21 August 1692. In addition to the dedication and licenses, the preliminary matter includes a privilege for ten years granted by the crown to the Franciscan Order, a four-page author's prologue, a neo-Latin epigram signed Emmanuel d'Abrantes, and another signed Fr. Valentinus de Alpoem, who also provides a sonnet in Portuguese. There is as well an elaborate thirteen-page table of contents. At the end is an "Elenchus por concionibus adaptandis" (pp. 640-78); an index of the most noteworthy things contained in the work (pp. 679-731); and an index to citations of Holy Scripture (pp. 732-60).Fr. Manoel dos Anjos was born in Manteigas, near Guarda, in 1595, and died at Coimbra, 1653. He also wrote a @Historia universal, originally published in Coimbra, 1651 (of which there appear to be two distinct issues), and what is probably yet another issue with a title page of Coimbra, 1652. Two different editions (issues?) of the @Historia universal, Lisbon, 1702, are said to be "correcta & emendada."---- Arouca A401. Cruz, @Tipografia portuguesa do séc. Porbase locates eight copies, all in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, but only one appears to be in decent condition both internally and as to the binding; all the others have serious worming, the title page mutilated, binding in "mau estado", or some combination of these faults.

Bon exemplaire. Sur Aignan cf. Raige-Delorme, Dictionnaire Encyclopédique des Sciences Médicales, II, p.202. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Hagenbach-Rogge in: Wetzer-Welte II, 545-46). - Einband etwas altersfleckig. Wenig gebräunt, die Tafel stärker. Insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!

His masterpiece is the nave ceiling of the Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome. Through his techniques, he has become one of the most remarkable figures of the Baroque period. This is the first edition of a compilation of treatises on geomancy including Robert Fludd's Tractatus de Geomantia, H. de Pisis' Opus Geomantiae completum in libros tres, and Quaestiones Geomantiae Altakini. Robert Fludd was an English physician and a prominent Rosicrucian. Geomancy was historically a form of predicting the future or uncovering facts hidden to the inquirer using a number of dots randomly jotted down by the geomancer. Fludd attempted to take this idea a little further and to use its application to unlock the unconscious part of the mind. Consequently, the work is of interest to historians of early psychology. Bound with: Tabulae Geomanticae, anonymous, FIRST EDITION 1693, small 8vo, pages: (3), 4 - 197, (3 - blanks), 2 folding tables precede the title page: Tabula Harmonica Sublunarium and Speculum Judiciale Astrologicum. Reg. Mit gestoch. Porträt. Titel in Rot und Schwarz. Guter Pergamentbd d. Z. mit geprägtem Rückentitel auf farbigem Grund.

(Leipzig), Johann Friedrich Gleditsch, 1693. – Exlibris Breitenbauch. Titel verso mit gelöschtem Bibliotheksstempel. Gutes Exemplar. – VD17 3:607135P und 3:607137D.
