Carte Particuliere Des Costes De L' Afrique Qui comprend le Pays De Cafres etc.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1693. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 22.5 x 32.25". This beautiful and rare map of the coast of Africa depicts the southeastern coast from St. Lucia north as far as River Mocambo and Mozambique. Oriented with north to the right, with text in both Latin and French, it covers the coast of the modern day nations of South Africa and Mozambique. Incredibly detailed along the coast, the sea chart labels several kingdoms, bays, rivers, capes and towns as well as coastal features, shoals and depth soundings. An inset in the top right details the region near Sofala and the Island of Inhancato in the Kingdom of Manica near Motapa. Shows beautiful inland detail with topography rendered in profile, including the fortress of Sofala. This ancient region, part of the Kingdom of Monomotapa or Mutapa was first encountered by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The Europeans quickly became interested in the region, which was rich in gold, and soon became associated with the legends of King Solomon's Mines. Most of the gold mines however had been exhausted by the 1700's. This map is in good condition with large margins. Minor wear along the centerfold with some offsetting and foxing at places. Original pressmark is visible. Minor edge wear, including small rips, not affecting printed image. Two sheets joined at center. Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois" or "Suite de Neptune Francois", considered to contain the most beautiful examples of cartographic art. Most of the charts from the atlas were based on earlier manuscripts by the Portuguese, who were the first explorers of the African coast. This chart is a beautiful example of one of those charts.

        I. Carte Particuliere des Costes de Normandie Depuis Dieppe jusqu'a la pointe de la Perçée en Bessin. Faite Par Ordre Exprez du Roy de France

Paris [but Amsterdam: Mortier], 1693. Engraved with full, period colour. This large scale, beautifully coloured chart which shows the coast of France from Sainte Mère-Englise to Dieppe, comes from Le Neptune François , a lavish collection of charts produced collaboratively by Hubert Jaillot and Pierre Mortier. As Koeman discovered in his research on this work (see P. Mortier, Atlantes Neerlandici, Maritime Atlases, p. 423-4), Mortier re-engraved the plates after the original French prototype Neptune François by Charles Pène and others in a richly coloured edition and added to the titles the words "Levée et Gravée par ordre du Roy à Paris 1693" though they were in fact engraved, coloured and published in Amsterdam by Mortier. Pierre Mortier's grandparents were French émigrés, who left France in about 1625 to live in Leiden. His parents settled in Amsterdam in 1661 or 1662. Pierre Mortier grew up in Amsterdam but lived in Paris from 1681 to about 1685 where he must have gotten into the book trade. Once he was in Amsterdam again he specialized in French books and maintained his relationships with Parisian publishers. Amsterdam was at this time the international marketplace for books, especially books forbidden by repressive governments. He established himself in the field of cartographical publishing by offering editions of French maps, primarily Sanson's and Jaillot's to a public tired of the superb but dated Dutch offerings. Working on a scale larger than the typical Dutch folio map and providing the new insights of French geography, he was immensely successful. The charts in his version of Le Neptune François are outstanding examples of cartographical art. They are among the most beautiful printed sea charts ever made. This chart gives the soundings and shorelines for this area of French coastline along the English Channel including towns Bayeux and Rouen. Koeman, M. Mor 1, #16.

Erstausg.

Cm.20,5x15. Legatura in pergamena molle moderna. Capilettera e cartigli ornamentali incisi. Alcuni restauri cartacei a mendare vecchie tarlature. Parziale mancanza del testo alle carte D4 e D5. Sono riportati i testi dei discorsi pronunciati da Paolo Sinibaldi, Filippo Giusti e Amedeo Saminiati in occasione dell'incoronazione dell'immagine, oltre a numerose liriche e odi composte, in italiano e in latino, da Geronimo Vecoli, Giuseppe Maria Quilici, Lelio Mansi, Mauro Lorenzo Berti, Alfonso Sinibaldi, Antonio Pieroni, Pompeo Lommori, Lorenzo Cenami, Bernardo Moscheni, Francesco Motroni, Giovanni Spada, Alessandro Fanucchi, Domenico Giusti, Angelo Bendinelli, Pietro Francesco Benassai, Domenico Mansi, Angelo Montecatini, Fabio Mazzarosa, Andrea Fratini, Andrea Gervasi, Silvestro Santini, Gemignano Barsotti, Nicolao Emilio Mansi, Bernardo Boccella, Francesco Maria Fiorentini, Domenico Bartoli, Giovanni Bertocchi, Domenico Barsocchini, etc. Large folio. 10 hand-coloured engraved plates by Dorigny on laid paper (each 15 7/8 x 26 inches approximately), titles and imprints printed in gold, black ink-ruled borders, each plate cut to the edge of the image, mounted on large sheets of contemporary thick laid paper (each 29 3/8 x 40 3/8 inches approximately). Unbound A very fine suite of richly hand-coloured plates offering a stunning visual record of one of the best of the decorative interior schemes carried out by Raphael in Rome. This wonderful series records Raphael's 'Cupid and Psyche' series of frescoes, carried out by him between 1516 and 1518 in the Loggia of Psyche in the villa Farnesina in Rome. The series also comes with a title and an eleventh plate of the ceiling fresco in the adjoining Sala di Galatea, executed in 1512: neither the plate nor the title are present here. Originally published by the Rossis, the engravings are the work of Nicolas Dorigny (1658-1746) who lived and worked in Rome between about 1690 and 1719. The painter, classicist, and art historian Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696) provided the text at the foot of the plates (appropriate excerpts from Apuleuis's Golden Ass).       "Paris" [but Amsterdam]: "chez Hubert Jaillot" [but Pierre Mortier], 1693. 3 volumes, folio. (25 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches). Letterpress title printed in red and black with small engraved vignette, 1 folding letterpress text leaf "Les vies des anciens solitaires...". (Lacking map numbers '3' "La Mappe-Monde"; '5' "L'Europe"; '11' " L'Amerique Septentrionale"; '42' "L'Espagne"; '46' "L'Italie"; '66' "Le Cours du Danube"; and 2 engraved text leaves, engraved frontispiece creased and with small tears to creases, 2 maps torn at folds). Contemporary light brown speckled calf, covers with gilt double-fillet border, spines in nine compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by gilt fillets, red/brown morocco lettering-pieces in the second, third and fourth compartments A very fine copy, with excellent contemporary hand colouring, of a variant not recorded by the standard bibliographies One of the most important figures in French cartography, Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600, Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king, establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the continent. He was succeeded by his sons, Adrien, and Guillaume, and by his son-in-law Pierre Duval, who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who joined Sanson's heirs in the production of this atlas, which first appeared in 1681 (but with less than half the number of maps here). Jaillot had the elder Sanson's maps redrawn on a larger scale and with fresh embellishments on the finest paper. Pierre (or Pieter) Mortier was born in Amsterdam, but lived and worked in Paris for various cartographical publishers from 1681 to 1685, making the connections and learning the skills that were to stand him in good stead on his return to Amsterdam. He specialised in French books and according to Koeman "His knowledge of modern French cartography led him to copying the maps by Sanson, published by Jaillot". Maps of other cartographers frequently appear bound in this work; this copy contains Herman Moll's "A New Map Containing The Towns, Gentlemens Houses, Villages, and other Remarks Round London". This example seems to be an intermediate issue falling somewhere between Pastoreau 1D (same date on title, with 99 maps and 27 leaves of views and plans, but only 72 engraved text leaves) and Pastoreau 1E (with no views and plans, 99 engraved text leaves , but with 111 maps and 17pp. of letterpress text). Copper-engraved sea chart, with full original colour and gold embellishments, a minor split at centerfold skilfully repaired, overall in very good condition. A magnificent seventeenth-century sea chart of Western Europe, with gilt embellishments. This large scale, beautifully coloured coastal chart of Western Europe comes from Le Neptune François , a lavish collection of charts produced collaboratively by Hubert Jaillot and Pierre Mortier. As Koeman discovered in his research on this work (see P. Mortier, Atlantes Neerlandici, Maritime Atlases, p. 423-4), Mortier re-engraved the plates after the original French prototype Neptune François by Charles Pène and others in a richly coloured version and added to the titles the words "Levée et Gravée par Ordre du Roy à Paris 1693", though they were in fact engraved, coloured and published in Amsterdam by Mortier. The charts in his version of Le Neptune François are outstanding examples of cartographical art. They are among the most beautiful printed sea charts ever made. This general chart of the coast of Western Europe extends from the region west of Tronheim, Norway to about where Casablanca is on the coast of North Africa. It includes all of the British Isles and the coasts of, Denmark, northwestern Germany, Holland, France, Spain and Portugal. The map is oriented so that east is at the top of the page. Mombasa at the time was an important trading center for gold, ivory and spices with trade links reaching as far as India and China. The second inset near the top center details the fortifications of Mombasa. The fort featured here (Fortification de Mombasa ou Mombasa) was built in the late 16th century by the Portuguese. The fort was built in the shape of a man with the head towards the sea and was named Fort Jesus. The shape is clearly evident in this map. Today, the fort is an historical monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site popular with local and international tourists. This map is in good condition with large margins. Minor wear along the centerfold with some offsetting and foxing at places. Original pressmark is visible. Minor edge wear, including small rips and tears, not affecting printed image. Two sheets joined at center with another horizontal fold.

Minor soiling, slight losses at edges of folds, but an interesting Colonial document from a prominent colonial family. Copy, signed by "Robt. Pike, J.P. & one of the Council"; all other signatures, including Osgood's and witnesses are secretarial. Single sheet, written both sides. 42 lines recto, 21 lines verso, plus various legal appurtenances at the foot, all written in black ink (now faded to brown). 13 x 8-1/4 inches (33 x 22 cm). The Osgood Mills in Salisbury, 1693. William Osgood of Shipton, England was a Pilgrim who arrived in America at the age of 29, in 1638, settling at first in Newbury, then finally settllng in the new community of Salisbury, along the Powow River, in 1641. "He was granted a 'goodly' piece of land on the east side of the Powow River. The Town granted him this land on the proviso that he construct a saw mill within six months 'that may be sufficient for the use of the Town.' He completed this mill which became only the second such mill in New England. He later constructed a grist mill along the Powow River ... William prospered in the mill business and his descendents tended to cluster in the Salisbury/Amesbury area to be around the business of the "Osgood Mills." Because of its location along the Powow River, Salisbury became an important source of lumber for the shipbuilding industry, and the Osgoods prospered.(cf. "Osgood Ancestry" at www.osgoodancestry.org/emigrants) Here, in his old age, Osgood begins to divest his holdings: "Know ye that I, William Osgood, for and in consideration of the Sum of Ten Pounds ... fully clearly & absolutely give grant bargain sell ... to them one quarter part apiece of all my rights & Interest of the waters water courses privileges ... that I now have outright or could have upon the Northern side of the Potow River at the falls there or below the falls & below the Sawmill now standing upon Salsbury ... " A fascinating glimpse into the business history of colonial Massachusetts.

Life of Dom John de Castro

1693 - (INDIA) ANDRADA, Jacinto Freire de. The Life of Dom John de Castro, the Fourth Vice-Roy of India… Translated into English by Sir Peter Wyche, Knight. London: Henry Herringman, 1693. Small folio, early full dark brown speckled calf neatly rebacked, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $4500.Expanded second edition of Andrada’s life of the Viceroy of India, João de Castroâ€"dubbed “Castro Forte” by Camões in the Lusiadsâ€"with frontispiece portrait Faithorne and two copper-engraved plates, one folding. A fine copy.In 1545 João de Castro was sent to the Indies. “The next three years were the hardest and most brilliant, as they were the last, of his lifeâ€"years of battle and struggle, of glory and sorrow, of suffering and triumph. Valiantly seconded by his sons (one of whom, Fernão, was killed before Diu)… de Castro achieved such popularity by the overthrow of Mahmud, king of Gujarat, by the relief of Diu, and by the defeat of the great army of the Adil Khan, that he could contract a very large loan with the Goa merchants on the simple security of his moustache. These great deeds were followed by the capture of Broach, bu the complete subjugation of Malacca, and by the passage of Antonio Moniz into Ceylon; and in 1547 the great captain was appointed viceroy by João III” (Britannica, 11th ed.). Andrada’s account, translated admirably by Sir Peter Wyche, eldest son of the English ambassador at Oporto, details the Portuguese discovery, exploration, conquest and control of territories in East India and the Spice Islands, and the conquerors’ continuing efforts to secure their trade routes. First published in Portuguese in 1651; Wyche’s English translation first appeared in 1664. Wing F2156. Engraved bookplate and shelf label.Neat repair to verso of folding plate.         Veterum mathematicorum Athenaei, Apollodori, Philonis, Bitonis, Heronis et aliorum opera, graece et latine pleraque nunc primum edita: ex manuscriptis codicibus Bibliothecae Regiae. [Edited by M. Thévenot, J. Boivin, and P. de La Hire].

Typographia Regia 1693 - text in double columns, Greek or parallel Greek and Latin, many engraved diagrams and illustrations in the text, engraved head- and tail-pieces, some damp-staining in the lower margins, a few spots, first and last leaves foxed, puncture to last gathering with the loss of a few letters, pp. xvi (including half-title), 279, 290-365, [9, Index + colophon], folio (435 x 285mm), early 18th-century English Russia, double gilt fillets to sides, inner blind roll tooled panel within triple gilt fillets, 'hedgehog' corner ornaments, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in gilt, spine and joints rubbed, split at foot of upper joint, corners a little worn, the Macclesfield copy with bookplate and blind-stamps, good. This collection of early Greek writings in hydrostatics and mechanics contains the first Greek edition of Hero's Pneumatica and Automata, and the first edition of Biton in Greek and Latin. This is one of three early publications of French Academy of Sciences, grouped together as Dibner 84. 'Printed at the royal press in small editions they were intended as gifts of the King and Academy. In size, binding [the Norman copy was in contemporary calf with the arms of Louis XIV blocked in gilt on the covers] and beauty of the plates, they are among the most sumptuous books in science' (Dibner). An imposing folio, and rather scarce. There have been only 8 copies at auction in the last 40 years, whose provenance is a roll-call of the 20th century's most notable collectors of scientific books: Honeyman (2 copies, Jean Boivin's, and the Marquess of Bute's), Stanitz, Norman (our copy is 13mm taller than the Norman copy), Boas Hall. The Evelyn copy was sold at Christie's in 1977. (Dibner 84; NormaN 2148)

1693 VITAE PAPARUM AVENIONENSIUM Ecclesiastical History VELLUM Stephanus Baluzius (Étienne Baluze)

Apud Franciscum Muguet Regis, Cleri Gallicani: Paris, France, 1693. VITAE PAPARUM AVENIONENSIUM: Hoc Est HISTORIA PONTIFICUM ROMANORUM Qui in Gallia Sederunt AB Anno Christi MCCCV Usque Ad Annum MCCCXCIV. By STEPHANUS BALUZIUS (Étienne Baluze). TOMUS PRIMUS / TOMI PRIMI (Tome One). VELLUM BOUND Ecclesiastical Papal History. VERY SCARCE 1693 FIRST EDITION. PARISIIS (Paris) : Apud Franciscum Muguet Regis, Cleri Gallicani. MDCXCIII (1693). First Edition. The book was reprinted, most notably in 1916 and 1928. Those later editions can be found, but the 1693 first edition is almost impossible to find outside of a few Rare Book Rooms of Major Universities and National Libraries. Vellum Covers, manuscript titling on the spine, 8" x 10". Pagination: [1 leaf] front free endpaper, [1] title page, [1] blank verso, [4] Epistola, [16] Prefatio, [1] blank, [1] PLATE of PAPAL COINAGE, 1,478 numbered columns / 739 pages (text pages numbered by column only, two columns per page), [30] Index and Errata. Collated page for page with the 1693 First Edition Copy in the Rare Book Holdings of the Montserrat Abbey Library. That copy was digitized in 2011. There is a label size bookplate of Jacobi Manzoni at the upper corner of the front pastedown. Jacobi Manzoni / Giacomo Manzoni, was an important Italian book collector. Manzoni was born in 1816 in Lugo, Romagna, into an aristocratic family. He was involved in many aspects of Italian life, but his main pursuit, which he began at a very early age, was collecting books and manuscripts. At the time of his death in 1889, he left a library of approximately 25,000 rare and highly valued volumes. This is one of those volumes. Condition: The Vellum Covers have yellowed and toned, the spine has substantially darkened, there is some peeling and cracking to the covers' edges and 2" of splitting at the top and bottom of the spine folds, the edges and spine ends are shelf worn and rubbed through at places, nonetheless the covers are solid, doing their job well, and attractive in a Harry Potter's Hogwarts Library way. There is a bit of writing on the endpapers, a small bookplate to the front pastedown (as noted above) and a small label with numbers to the rear pastedown; the front free endpaper is creased, the title page has some edge wear and small edge chips, there is light toning and foxing throughout, overall the inner pages are very nice - tight, bright, clean, and unmarked. Good

RECUEIL DES TRAITEZ DE PAIX, DE TREVE, DE NEUTRALITE, DE CONFEDERATION, D'ALLIANCE, ET DE COMMERCE, FAITS PAR LES ROIS DE FRANCE, AVEC TOUS LES PRINCES, ET POTENTATS DE L'EUROPE, ET AUTRES, DEPUIS PRES DE TROIS SIECLES

Paris, 1693. Quarto. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, gilt morocco labels. Old small library stamp on titlepages. Scattered light tanning and an occasional fox mark, small bit of worming in lower margin of some leaves in second and third volumes, else internally clean. A very good set. This massive compilation is the first major collection of French treaties, beginning in 1435 and running to 1692, including many treaties relating to America. Many important French state papers appeared here for the first time, especially ones from the 15th and 16th centuries. It was not until the early 17th century that published versions of treaties began to appear simultaneously with the event, and even then treaties between kings were often secret, or contained secret sections, for decades. Thus, the Leonard set offers either first or very early printings of many documents of the greatest importance, including a number that are important for the Americas. The NUC entry for this work describes it in six volumes and locates five sets. Sabin states the work consists of six regular volumes plus two additional volumes of twenty- nine treaties with separate titlepages for each, covering treaties from 1697 to 1719. This set includes the original six volumes published in 1693, and is complete in and of itself. Frances Davenport identifies eleven treaties for which the Leonard set provides the first or first French printing between 1556 and 1684, as follows: 1) Davenport 20. Treaty between France and Spain, 1556, by which the French agreed to stay out of Spanish America and the Spanish agreed to leave alone French fisheries off the North American coast. 2) Davenport 22. Treaty between France and Spain, 1585. A similar agreement to keep France out of the Indies. 3) Davenport 26. Treaty between France and England, 1603. This treaty was made while England and Spain were still at war, and arranged for the French and British to take concerted action, with England raising a fleet to attack the Spanish New World dominions. It became a dead letter when James I made peace with Spain the next year. 4) Davenport 29. A defensive alliance between the Netherlands, France and England, in which the latter two agreed not to interfere with Dutch trade in the New World. 5) Davenport 32. Treaty between the Netherlands and France, agreeing not to interfere with each other's trade in the New World. 6) Davenport 34. Treaty between England and France settling the brief war between the powers of 1627-28. In this war the British had seized much of New France, including Quebec, which was restored with the peace. 7) Davenport 36. Treaty between Great Britain and France (St. Germain-en-laye). This treaty followed up Davenport 34, above, and called for the specific restoration of all of Canada; England gave up Nova Scotia reluctantly, and only in the face of French naval superiority. 8) Davenport 37. Treaty between France and Portugal, 1641. Portugal, having won independence back from Spain, agrees to cooperate with the French and Dutch against Spain in the New World. 9) Davenport 68. Agreement between Spain and the Netherlands, made by Spain in an attempt to defend its New World possessions. 10) Davenport 73. Cessation of hostilities in America between France and Sweden on one hand, and Denmark and Brandenburg on the other, 1679. This war had involved battles between the West Indian possessions of all powers, and restored the status quo while allowing free trade in West Indian ports. 11) Davenport 77. Treaty between Spain and France, 1684 (Ratisbon). This treaty supposedly brought peace between the Spanish and French throughout the world, but was really a screen by Louis XIV for his incursions on Spanish dominions in the New World. Immediately after it he authorized La Salle to start his colony on the Gulf of Mexico, and attempted to seize northern New Spain. A most important collection.

Trinum Marinum: oder: Die an einander hangende Drey Meer Pontus Euxinus, Propontis, cum Archipelago: oder: Das Schwartze, Weisse, und Egeische Meer.

Augsburg, Anton Nepperschmid for Jakob Enderlin, 1693. - Folio (305 x 190 mm). (2), 61, (1) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With 11 (instead of 18?) plates containing 22 copper engravings. Modern boards. Fascinating, little-received geographical study focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Cosmographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Chronographus" who produced the similarly themed chronographical work, "Arca Temporum", which was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The present work features an overview of the geography of the Ottoman Empire, including the Aegean, the Sea of Marmara, and the Black Sea region - the "three seas" to which the title refers. Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict maps and views as well as animals (a hyena and sheep, Iraklion and Chania, Nauplia, Koroni, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Izmir, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 8 plates as compared to the table of plates provided in "Arca Temporum". Occasional inkstains, but well-preserved. VD 17, 7:688727L; 3:605737C. Weller, Pseud. 439. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Arca Temporum Mundi Reserata, Oder: Der Welt eröffnete Zeit- und Geschicht-Beschreibung. Begreiffend: Perspeculatum [.].

Augsburg, Jakob Koppmayer for Jakob Enderlin, 1693. - Folio (305 x 190 mm). 2 parts in 1 volume. (4), 31, (1), 64 pp. With 12 (instead of 16) plates containing 24 copper engravings. Modern boards. Fascinating, little-received chronographical study focusing on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Chronographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Cosmographus" who produced the similarly themed geographical work, "Trinum Marinum", which is announced on the title page and was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The first part of the work contains a general introduction which relates the 24 hours of the day to the time from Creation to the year 1800 (which is conceived of as the end of the world, leaving another mere 107 years of history to come!). The second part features a chronicle of the "Rule of the Ottoman Porte", from Sultan Osman to Suleyman II. - Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict costumes, animals and plants, maps and views of towns (Sultan Osman, the Ottoman Residence and a view of Constantinople, dolphins and cranes, Turkish ladies in their various garments, a cypress and a mastix tree, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 4 plates as compared to the table of plates. Well-preserved. VD 17, 12:645730N. Weller, Pseud. 439. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Decisiones Juridicae. De Jure Universitatum, Omnibus Legum Studiosis..

1693. Seventeenth-Century Treatise on Universities and the Law Loseo, Niccolo [d. 1642]. Decisiones Juridicae. De Jure Universitatum. Omnibus Legum Studiosis & in Foro & in Schola Versantibus Apprime Utiles ac Necessariae. Hucusque Plurimum Desideratae. Cologne: Sumptibus Petri Ketteler, 1693. [ii], 381, [59] pp. Octavo (6-1/4" x 3-1/2"). Contemporary vellum, early hand-lettered title to spine. A few minor stains to boards, a few short tears to head of spine, small chip to foot, another short tear to head of front joint. Attractive woodcut head and tail-pieces. Light browning to text, somewhat heavier in places, occasional faint dampspotting. Early owner signature to front endleaves, tiny inkstains and spark burns to a few leaves, internally clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. * Fourth, final and best edition. First published in 1601 as De Jure Universitatum, this is a fascinating treatise on the privileges and immunities of universities under canon law. It is also notable as an early treatise on the law of corporations. Loseo published his book during a particularly tense period for the universities of Europe. As centers of theology, law and the civil service, they had been coping with the effects of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation for nearly two decades. A longer work than its predecessors, the text of the fourth edition is enriched with decisions and opinions. All editions are scarce. OCLC locates 3 copies of the first edition in North America (at Harvard Law School, the University of Chicago and Yale), none of the fourth edition.         A Treatise [The History] of the Roman Ports and Forts in Kent. Published by James Brome, M.A. Rector of Cheriton, and Chaplain to the Cinque-Ports. To which is prefixt the life of Mr. Somner.

Printed at the Theater, Oxford First Edition . Oxford 1693. - First edition in contemporary calf, raised bands to the spine. 8vo. 7½'' x 5''. Contains [xvi] 118, [ii] 117 [xvi] printed pages of text, engraved portrait frontispiece. Includes a Catalogue of the Lord-Wardens of the Cinque Ports. At the suggestion of Meric Casaubon he acquired a knowledge of Anglo-Saxon, and then wrote Observations on the Laws of King Henry I, published by Roger Twysden in 1644, with a new glossary. He made collections for a history of Kent, but abandoned this undertaking; this book being a portion of the work published at Oxford in 1693 by the Rev. James Brome, with notes by Edmund Gibson, and a life of the author by White Kennett. Joints cracked, rubbing to the covers, lengthy text to the front free flypaper, paper clean and fresh with only minimal age toning to the paper edges. Member of the P.B.F.A.         A Map of Essex, newly revised & Amended by P. Lea

1693 - London: Philip Lea, c.1693. Coloured. 415 x 525mm. Narrow margins, extra margin added at top. Philip Lea's uncommon re-issue of the Saxton map of Essex, the first printed map of the county, engraved in 1576. When Lea first published his edition of Saxton's atlas c.1689 this map was not included, replaced by the Ogilby-Morgan map of 1676. Either the Saxton map was not available or needed too much updating. The additions here are considerable: the title is now in English rather than Latin; a plan of Colchester has been added, surrounded by eight armorials; Ogilby's roads are shown; and thew initials W R have been added by the Royal Arms, for William III.
