Woodcut printer's vignette on title, two engraved head-pieces, one folding engraved plate with two images (sometimes divided making two plates), & numerous engravings in the text. 4 p.l., 198, [12] pp. 12mo, cont. red polished morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, gilt fleurons in each corner, spine nicely gilt, arms in gilt of Sébastian Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban on each cover (Olivier, pl. 343), a.e.g. Paris: the Widow of J.B. Coignard & the Son of Coignard, 1693. Second edition (1st ed.: 1689), revised, with considerable additions. This is one of the best contemporary explications of Vauban's "first system" of fortification and siegecraft. Vauban (1633-1707), the foremost military engineer of his age, was equally esteemed for his skill in both designing fortifications and breaking through them. Vauban approved of this work and we find on the final page of the preliminary leaves: "Ce petit Traité de Fortifications ne contient rien qui ne soit conforme à celles qui se pratiquent dans les Places du Roy. Fait à Paris le 2. Mars 1691. Vauban." A precious copy coming from the library of Vauban himself, with his arms in gilt on upper and lower covers. Engraved armorial bookplate of Jean-Charles de Mesgrigny (1682-1763). Preserved in a box. Light dampstaining to inner lower corner. .

ACTS AND LAWS, PASSED BY THE GREAT AND GENERAL COURT OR ASSEMBLY OF THEIR MAJESTIES PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, IN NEW-ENGLAND

Boston: Printed by Benjamin Harris, 1693. FIRST EDITION n. Enacted during a period from 8 June 1692 to 8 February 1693 (with "several adjournments"), the laws here are as miscellaneous as they are intriguing. They encompass the appointment of guardians, the imprisonment of debtors, the prohibition of fishing for mackerel before the beginning of July, the choosing of community ministers, shipping duties, and the registering of births and deaths. The appointment of ministers is considered in detail, with fines to be imposed on any community failing to install a clergyman, the forfeiture being earmarked for poor relief in the offending town or village. The requirement to record births and deaths is imposed to prevent "great uncertainty and inconvenience that may happen," although what sorts of uncertainty and inconvenience are not specified. What is specified are the various costs involved: three pence to register any birth or death (and to receive a certificate for the same), six pence for the town clerk to register any one client and provide the appropriate certificate, and a whopping fine of five shillings for "every person . . . refusing [to perform] or neglecting" the required action. Benjamin Harris was notable as the first colonial printer to produce a newspaper, though it was as short-lived as a publication could be, being issued on 25 September 1690 but never thereafter.. 295 x 170 mm. (11 1/2 x 6 3/4"). [2], 6 pp. FIRST EDITION. New sympathetic sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine labels. Title page with the oval stamp of the New York City Bar Association Library. Shipton & Mooney 647. Light browning and spotting because of inferior paper quality, but the text showing few signs of use, and the retrospective binding unworn.

ACTS AND LAWS, PASSED BY THE GREAT AND GENERAL COURT OR ASSEMBLY OF THEIR MAJESTIES PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, IN NEW-ENGLAND. CONVENED AND HELD AT BOSTON, THE THIRTY-FIRST DAY OF MAY. 1693

Boston: Printed by Bartholomew Green, 1693. FIRST EDITION n. Like the other "Acts and Laws" described in this catalogue, the legislation contained here deals with matters of fundamental importance and at the same time issues of significance at a lower level, however intriguing they seem to us more than three centuries later. Here we see laws that include (among other things) the limiting of interest charged to six percent for lent monies (or "Wares, Merchandize, or other Commodities"); the establishment of community supervision, through the Justice of the Peace, of the building of any ship greater than 30 tons; the founding of a post office in Boston as the hub for delivery of mail to any location in the world, along with the setting of postal rates (six pence, for example, would move a letter between Rhode Island and Boston); the exclusive restriction of mail carriers to those employed by the Post-Master General; the confirmation of ownership in perpetuity of properties in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket; the establishment of procedures for preventing the circumventing of duties on goods brought into harbor (with officers being empowered to board and search vessels, and cargo to be unloaded only during daylight hours); and the encouragement of the killing of wolves within township limits, 20 shillings to be paid for each wolf killed (five shillings for a whelp), with monies to be assessed of the inhabitants of those towns so served by the thinning out of what had clearly become a menacing overpopulation. Bartholomew Green (1666-1732) was the chief printer for the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the last 40 years of his life. He printed and later published the "Boston News-Letter," the first continuing newspaper in the American colonies. After apprenticing for Samuel Sewall, Green set up his own press while still in his teens, and he printed the important "Acts and Laws" while in his mid-twenties.. 295 x 170 mm.         Fine bust-length mezzotint portrait of the composer in formal dress within a draped border incorporating musical instruments and books. Signed by the artist "G.F." [George Fennitzer] in the plate

1693 - 166 x 120 mm. Buel wears a heavy necklace from which hangs a large medal, possibly signifying his position as registrar in Nürnberg. Traces of mounting paper to verso. Nagler II, 2935.27. Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts, ca. 1450-1700, 19. "That Buel was highly regarded by his contemporaries is suggested by the frequency with which he was represented in anthologies. Krautwurst saw him as the most important Nuremberg musician between Hassler and Johann Staden, and his music, which is little known, will no doubt repay further study." Miroslaw Perz in Grove onlineFennitzer was active as an engraver and mezzotintist in Nürnberg in the second half of the 17th century. An attractive early example of the mezzotint engraving technique.

        Switserland map - Jaillot.

Madrid: Antonio Roman 4to. [16] ff., 666 pp., [1] f. (without the portrait).. 1693 Jesuit priest Francisco del Castillo (1615–73) was born in Lima and educated in the Jesuit Colegio Real de San Martín. He entered the Society of Jesus as a novice on the last day of 1631 and took his final vows in early 1650. Even before that, he had begun evangelic work among the black population and notably, as did the Testerian method used in Mexico among the Indian population, he => used drawings in support of his oral delivery. Castillo studied the Chiriguano language (of the Guarani family) in expectation of being a missionary among them, but was sent to Chile as a personal chaplain to the nephew of the Viceroy instead; and upon returning to Lima a few years later he learned that the mission to the Chiriguanos had been abandoned. Then, redoubling his work among the blacks, he learned "Angolan" (i.e., probably Bantu) in order to serve his flock, and he is said to have composed doctrinal works in that language which he left in manuscript. His work among the blacks was especially directed to those ("los desamparados") who had been abandoned, often to helpless homelessness, by their owners. Among other benefactions and with the support of the viceroy, the Conde de Lemos, he constructed a church for them, La Iglesia de los Desamparados; the biography devotes pp. 270 to 278 to describing it and pp. 294 to 312 to describing its statuary. => These pages (and the sheer number of them!) suggest the richness that serious sponsors could set forth even for the humblest in late-17th-century Peru. => The present biography is by a fellow Jesuit who knew Castillo. NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, CCPBE, and the OPAC of the Spanish National Library show two U.S. library copies, plus one in Scotland, one in Mexico, six in Spain, and one in Chile. Provenance: On title-page, old inked ownership inscription of a Jesuit colegio. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of button and loop ties, lacking the portrait. Front free endpaper with faint old pencilled notes, rear pastedown missing exposing lining, all edges red. A few short marginal tears or paper flaws, and one lower corner lost touching text (taking a bit of print but not sense); in all, a very good, clean, untattered copy.

[2] ff. First printed in the author's Despertador Christiano eucharistico (Madrid, 1690), the Epistola, here reprinted under the license of the bishop of Puebla, is the extracted matter on preaching on feast days. It gives practical advice on composing such sermons, including reasoning to employ against those who would object to things suggested by Barcia — who was an "in demand" preacher, and indeed, preacher to the King — and much other down-to-earth matter for pulpiteers. Certainly the work is not one of the handsomest examples of printing in Puebla, but the title-page is a prime example of the style of the 1690s. It has an ornamental border, both roman and italic type in multiple point sizes, printer's ornaments, and "too much information." There are bibliographical references on pp. 110–15.         Carte Particuliere Des Costes De L' Afrique Qui comprend le Pays De Cafres etc.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1693. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 22.5 x 32.25". This beautiful and rare map of the coast of Africa depicts the southeastern coast from St. Lucia north as far as River Mocambo and Mozambique. Oriented with north to the right, with text in both Latin and French, it covers the coast of the modern day nations of South Africa and Mozambique. Incredibly detailed along the coast, the sea chart labels several kingdoms, bays, rivers, capes and towns as well as coastal features, shoals and depth soundings. An inset in the top right details the region near Sofala and the Island of Inhancato in the Kingdom of Manica near Motapa. Shows beautiful inland detail with topography rendered in profile, including the fortress of Sofala. This ancient region, part of the Kingdom of Monomotapa or Mutapa was first encountered by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The Europeans quickly became interested in the region, which was rich in gold, and soon became associated with the legends of King Solomon's Mines. Most of the gold mines however had been exhausted by the 1700's. This map is in good condition with large margins. Minor wear along the centerfold with some offsetting and foxing at places. Original pressmark is visible. Minor edge wear, including small rips, not affecting printed image. Two sheets joined at center. Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois" or "Suite de Neptune Francois", considered to contain the most beautiful examples of cartographic art. Most of the charts from the atlas were based on earlier manuscripts by the Portuguese, who were the first explorers of the African coast. This chart is a beautiful example of one of those charts.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1693. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 21.5 x 30". This beautiful sea chart of the NW coast of Africa covers from the Senegal River to Palmares (close to modern day Conakry in Guinea). The sea chart offers striking detail along the coast noting towns, rivers, islands and coastal features including banks and depth soundings. An inset of the Island of Goree (located near Cape Verde) is included with beautifully detailed interior notes Fort Nassau and Fort Orange. At the time, the Island was used as a base for the purchase of slaves from the chiefdoms on the mainland by the Atlantic slave traders. The map is in good condition with large margins. Minor wear along the centerfold with some offsetting and foxing at places. Original pressmark is visible. Minor edge wear with top left corner of the map showing creases - not extending onto printed map. Two sheets joined at center with a horizontal fold along the entire map.

Paris [but Amsterdam: Mortier], 1693. Engraved with full, period colour. This large scale, beautifully coloured chart which shows the coast of France from Sainte Mère-Englise to Dieppe, comes from Le Neptune François , a lavish collection of charts produced collaboratively by Hubert Jaillot and Pierre Mortier. As Koeman discovered in his research on this work (see P. Mortier, Atlantes Neerlandici, Maritime Atlases, p. 423-4), Mortier re-engraved the plates after the original French prototype Neptune François by Charles Pène and others in a richly coloured edition and added to the titles the words "Levée et Gravée par ordre du Roy à Paris 1693" though they were in fact engraved, coloured and published in Amsterdam by Mortier. Pierre Mortier's grandparents were French émigrés, who left France in about 1625 to live in Leiden. His parents settled in Amsterdam in 1661 or 1662. Pierre Mortier grew up in Amsterdam but lived in Paris from 1681 to about 1685 where he must have gotten into the book trade. Once he was in Amsterdam again he specialized in French books and maintained his relationships with Parisian publishers. Amsterdam was at this time the international marketplace for books, especially books forbidden by repressive governments. He established himself in the field of cartographical publishing by offering editions of French maps, primarily Sanson's and Jaillot's to a public tired of the superb but dated Dutch offerings. Working on a scale larger than the typical Dutch folio map and providing the new insights of French geography, he was immensely successful. The charts in his version of Le Neptune François are outstanding examples of cartographical art. They are among the most beautiful printed sea charts ever made. This chart gives the soundings and shorelines for this area of French coastline along the English Channel including towns Bayeux and Rouen. Koeman, M. Mor 1, #16.
