Veramente godibile. Nell'insieme ottimo esemplare. Edizione originale. Rara opera sul codice cavalleresco. Carl Thimm, Bibliographie complete de l'escrime, p.74. Manca al Cat. Vinciana.

Novum systema medicum ex unitate doctrinae recentiorum, & antiquorum.

Giuseppe Dall'Oglio, 1693.

Incisioni in rame, eseguita all'acquaforte su quattro matrici ognuna, anticamente unite. Dimensioni 1130x835 e 1130x835. Once he had realized his project to renovate and enlarge Rome, Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) charged quite a few topographers and agronomists to realize the Roman countryiside land registry, putting the Jesuit Francesco Eschinardi in charge of the cartographic part. The best maps have been drawn by Giovan Battista Cingolati and Ameti, who realized two big size maps of the Northern and Southern neighbourhood of Rome. As Almagià points out, the two maps could be joined to form just one print, since they share a part where the river Tiber and Rome are depicted. This work is basically after Innocenzo Mattei's (1626 - 79), a Camaldolese monk, who was official geographer of Clemente X and realized his work in 1666. When compared to Mattei's Tavola esatta dell'antico Latio e Nova Campagna di Roma, Ameti's work shows many analogies in different fields: classical references, the names of the streets, etc. It differs from its sources on the addiction of new places, especially along the coasts. The first map (St. Peter's Heritage) presents a big cartouche on upper left, with the date, 1691, and the printer's name, Domenico de Rossi, together with dedication to the Cardinal Francesco Nerli. The description of the territory is quite detailed, with wods, heights, the small towns and the lakes of Bolsena, Bracciano and Orbetello. The map of Latium, dedicated to the Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, has been printed three years before and presents a better relief of the Pontine marshes, and even the hydrography is quite different. Ameti's map have been included, together with Mattei's, in the second edition of De Rossi's Mercurio Geografico. Copperplates, realized in four plates each, joined together in the past, with the technique of etching. Example in excellent condition, trimmed to platemark; sings of glue along the old folds. Roma Rome Istituto di Studi Romani, a cura di A. Frutaz, "Le Carte del Lazio", XXXIII, tavv. 174 - 181; Almagià , Documenti Cartografici dello Stato Pontificio, pp. 40 - 42, 73. 1130 835

        Histoire du cardinal Ximenès

Chez Jean Anisson, 1693. - Chez Jean Anisson, à Paris 1693, In 4 (18x26cm), (4) XVIII 659pp.

Woodcut printer's vignette on title, two engraved head-pieces, one folding engraved plate with two images (sometimes divided making two plates), & numerous engravings in the text. 4 p.l., 198, [12] pp. 12mo, cont. red polished morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, gilt fleurons in each corner, spine nicely gilt, arms in gilt of Sébastian Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban on each cover (Olivier, pl. 343), a.e.g. Paris: the Widow of J.B. Coignard & the Son of Coignard, 1693. Second edition (1st ed.: 1689), revised, with considerable additions. This is one of the best contemporary explications of Vauban's "first system" of fortification and siegecraft. Vauban (1633-1707), the foremost military engineer of his age, was equally esteemed for his skill in both designing fortifications and breaking through them. Vauban approved of this work and we find on the final page of the preliminary leaves: "Ce petit Traité de Fortifications ne contient rien qui ne soit conforme à celles qui se pratiquent dans les Places du Roy. Fait à Paris le 2. Mars 1691. Vauban." A precious copy coming from the library of Vauban himself, with his arms in gilt on upper and lower covers. Engraved armorial bookplate of Jean-Charles de Mesgrigny (1682-1763). Preserved in a box. Light dampstaining to inner lower corner. .

ACTS AND LAWS, PASSED BY THE GREAT AND GENERAL COURT OR ASSEMBLY OF THEIR MAJESTIES PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, IN NEW-ENGLAND

Boston: Printed by Benjamin Harris, 1693. FIRST EDITION n. Enacted during a period from 8 June 1692 to 8 February 1693 (with "several adjournments"), the laws here are as miscellaneous as they are intriguing. They encompass the appointment of guardians, the imprisonment of debtors, the prohibition of fishing for mackerel before the beginning of July, the choosing of community ministers, shipping duties, and the registering of births and deaths. The appointment of ministers is considered in detail, with fines to be imposed on any community failing to install a clergyman, the forfeiture being earmarked for poor relief in the offending town or village. The requirement to record births and deaths is imposed to prevent "great uncertainty and inconvenience that may happen," although what sorts of uncertainty and inconvenience are not specified. What is specified are the various costs involved: three pence to register any birth or death (and to receive a certificate for the same), six pence for the town clerk to register any one client and provide the appropriate certificate, and a whopping fine of five shillings for "every person . . . refusing [to perform] or neglecting" the required action. Benjamin Harris was notable as the first colonial printer to produce a newspaper, though it was as short-lived as a publication could be, being issued on 25 September 1690 but never thereafter.. 295 x 170 mm. (11 1/2 x 6 3/4"). [2], 6 pp. FIRST EDITION. New sympathetic sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine labels. Title page with the oval stamp of the New York City Bar Association Library. Shipton & Mooney 647. Light browning and spotting because of inferior paper quality, but the text showing few signs of use, and the retrospective binding unworn.

ACTS AND LAWS, PASSED BY THE GREAT AND GENERAL COURT OR ASSEMBLY OF THEIR MAJESTIES PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, IN NEW-ENGLAND. CONVENED AND HELD AT BOSTON, THE THIRTY-FIRST DAY OF MAY. 1693

Boston: Printed by Bartholomew Green, 1693. FIRST EDITION n. Like the other "Acts and Laws" described in this catalogue, the legislation contained here deals with matters of fundamental importance and at the same time issues of significance at a lower level, however intriguing they seem to us more than three centuries later. Here we see laws that include (among other things) the limiting of interest charged to six percent for lent monies (or "Wares, Merchandize, or other Commodities"); the establishment of community supervision, through the Justice of the Peace, of the building of any ship greater than 30 tons; the founding of a post office in Boston as the hub for delivery of mail to any location in the world, along with the setting of postal rates (six pence, for example, would move a letter between Rhode Island and Boston); the exclusive restriction of mail carriers to those employed by the Post-Master General; the confirmation of ownership in perpetuity of properties in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket; the establishment of procedures for preventing the circumventing of duties on goods brought into harbor (with officers being empowered to board and search vessels, and cargo to be unloaded only during daylight hours); and the encouragement of the killing of wolves within township limits, 20 shillings to be paid for each wolf killed (five shillings for a whelp), with monies to be assessed of the inhabitants of those towns so served by the thinning out of what had clearly become a menacing overpopulation. Bartholomew Green (1666-1732) was the chief printer for the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the last 40 years of his life. He printed and later published the "Boston News-Letter," the first continuing newspaper in the American colonies. After apprenticing for Samuel Sewall, Green set up his own press while still in his teens, and he printed the important "Acts and Laws" while in his mid-twenties.. 295 x 170 mm.       1693 - 166 x 120 mm. Buel wears a heavy necklace from which hangs a large medal, possibly signifying his position as registrar in Nürnberg. Traces of mounting paper to verso. Nagler II, 2935.27. Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts, ca. 1450-1700, 19. "That Buel was highly regarded by his contemporaries is suggested by the frequency with which he was represented in anthologies. Krautwurst saw him as the most important Nuremberg musician between Hassler and Johann Staden, and his music, which is little known, will no doubt repay further study." Miroslaw Perz in Grove onlineFennitzer was active as an engraver and mezzotintist in Nürnberg in the second half of the 17th century. An attractive early example of the mezzotint engraving technique.

Joseph Moxon (1627-1700) was a London dealer and printer, specialising in mathematical books and instruments, a globe maker, amateur in the mechanical arts, hydrographer to Charles II providing maps and charts for royal use, and Fellow of the Royal Society, the first tradesman to be so elected. He produced the first English language dictionary devoted to mathematics. In his Mechanical Exercises he sets out to describe the chief trades of the day with illustrations of machinery, tools, furnaces, locks, plans etc. It is one of the earliest English books to describe and illustrate the tools of various trades and explain their uses.
