London, 1690. unbound. very good. View. Uncolored etching. Image measures 4 11/16" x 6.5". Charming view of the island of Malta, circa 1690. This rare view shows a ship with the fortified city and seascape in the background. John Seller (c. 1630-1697) was an English instrument maker and cartographer and in 1671 he was appointed Hydrographer to the King. Seller instigated the first English maritime atlas, in an effort to compete with the successful Dutch maps at the time. This print was published in "A New Systeme of Geography...", circa 1690. EVANGELISTA, Johannes;
Frankfurt, Johann Georg Lipper 1690 [1686];. (2. oder 3. Aufl.); 2 Teile in 1 Band; kl.-8°; (26) 383 (12), 123 (1) Seiten; Ldr d.

CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718) and Jean-Nicolas de TRALAGE (c.1640-1699)
Paris: Jean-Baptiste Nolin, 1690. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour. A very beautiful and finely engraved world map, principally devised by one of the period's greatest cartographersThis very fine map is the result of the synergy of the talents of Coronelli and his French colleague Tralage, popularly known as the Sieur de Tillemont. It principally depicts the world in a bi-hemispheric projection, and largely follows the geography represented on Coronelli's celebrated globe of 1688. California is shown to be an island, and in the enigmatic void that lies to the northwest is the 'Strait of Anian' that supposedly forms the western terminus of a Northwest Passage. Beyond the Strait, just to the northeast of Japan is the mysterious "Terre de Jessu," representing, perhaps, Hokkaido. Much further south, the loosely-defined area that is now known as New Guinea is labelled as the "Terre de Quir," noting on the map that it was discovered in 1606 by the Spanish explorer Ferdinand de Quir. The only major addition here to Coronelli's established geography is the appearance of the Solomon Islands.Surrounding the principal hemispheres are eight diverse hemispheric projections of the world, evincing a playful fascination with mathematics and perspective that anticipated the Enlightenment of the next century. Adorning the two upper corners of the map are a pair of hemispheres capturing the world from an oblique perspective, one centered on Paris, and the other from its diametrically opposite position in the antipodes. Also, in the upper portion of the map, is a pair of hemi … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Nebst vielen anderen Orthen in Riss Gebracht von P. Trenckmann, P. Schenk in Amsterdam mit Konigl. Und Chürfurstl. Sachss. Privilegio." John Seller (c. 1630-1697) was an English instrument maker and cartographer and in 1671 he was appointed Hydrographer to the King. De Wit, A.F.
Amsterdam: De Wit, 1690. A most attractive double hemisphere map of the world, with smaller polar insets. Handsomely decorated with allegorical vignettes of the four seasons in the border. The first edition of the map is recorded as Shirley 451- he records the 2nd state adding a border & some cherubs to the plate as well as Nova Guinea and Quiri Regio on the left hand hemisphere. This edition, (Shirley 499) is further altered in that California as an island has a pointed tip (instead of a flat top), and by the insertion ot some of the Great Lakes instead of the single open-ended inland sea shown previously. De Wit was granted privilege in 1688, and included a line to that effect under the title. Australia is illustrated post-Tasman, showing the tip of Tasmania & Cape York Peninsula, the full West coast of Australia. The bottom of Cape Horn is the only geographical feature on the Antarctic polar projection. Copper engraving with old color refreshed. Size: 48 x 57 cm. (19 x 22½ in.) [HxW].Bottom center fold strengthened, with small margin tear strengthened. Overall in very good condition. A most attractive world map. References: Shirley, R.W. (World) 499. Paris: H. Bonnart. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1690. Hardcover. Etchings; Art; We fit archival quality clear acrylic covers for additional protection whenever possible. ; Etching; 1 vol. N. D. [ca. 1690]. Sm. 4to, modern 3/4 crushed scarlet niger morocco leather & marbled bds. , spine gilt; minor wear. With 60 fullpage etchings (incl. Title page ) + 11 mounted etchings after Rosa. From Rosa's Figurine series by Henri Bonnart, and is catalogued as a Rosa imitation at Wallace 134. Title page repaired. Scattered, mostly minor, foxing & smudging. The full suite of 60 etchings is included with plates 54 and 55 being out of sequence but present. The 11 additional plates are tipped in and numbered out of sequence. They are not identical to the same numbered plates amongst the first sixty. I was not able to locate any information and have to assume that the book is extra-illustrated or else the other copies on the market are short. The extra-illustration is particularly probable as the 60 plates are on Japan paper whereas the final 11 are mounted on finely laid paper. The last leaf was made up by gluing two sheets together- the appearance is not unpleasing. The 11 plates are numbered: 19, 5, 29, 15, 24, 25, 4, 10, 25, 9, and 28. Book protected in clear dust jacket. Graphics of volume and a sample etching are available. .
