Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Magnifica impressione. Bibliografia: Cortazzi, Isles of Gold, p. 48. pl. 75; Potter, Antique Maps, pp. 126-7; Campbell, #33; Walter, Japan a Cartographic vision, 191. Dimensioni 620x465. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's map of Japan and Korea is one of the most visually dramatic images of the region. The large title appears within a foliate border and a detailed oared vessel is a described as a Japanese boat able to cover the distance between Osaka and Nagasaki in twelve days, a distance of some 220 French miles. Coronelli's cartography often showed originality, although here, lacking any more up-to-date information, the century's standard Martini/Blaeu prototype has been used. Important map engraved in Coronelli?s typically robust style. Cortazzi in Isles of Gold says of it. Mention must also be made of another seventeenth-century map, namely th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
[Click Below for Full Description]

This copy has nine of the manuscript corrections (in Pepys' hand or under his direction) and the usual cancels. ¶ Early ink signature on the title-page of "Northesk," which is probably that of John Carnegie (1756-1831), the seventh earl of Northesk, who served in the Royal Navy with great distinction. Edges a little rubbed; upper joints starting, but sound; fine copy.

HUYGENS, Christian
Woodcut device on general & divisional titles and numerous woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text. General title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., 124, [2], 125-128, [2], 129-180 pp. 4to, cont. vellum over boards. Leyden: P. vanderAa, 1690. First edition of one of the great classics of optics. This book contains Huygens' classical formulation of optical phenomena in terms of the wave theory of light, opposing the corpuscular theory advanced by Newton. Huygens showed how all points of a wave front originate partial waves and thereby propagate further wave motion. Thus reflection and refraction of light could also be explained. By the same means the complicated phenomena of double refraction and the polarization by double refraction were also explained. Huygens' wave theory of light remained unaccepted for over 100 years until Thomas Young used it to explain optical interference. The second part of this book -- the Discours de la Cause de la Pesanteur -- contains Huygens' mechanical explanation of gravity. His "point of view was that gravity should not be attributed to a quality or propensity of bodies, but should be explained, like every other natural process, in terms of motion."-Wolf, I, p. 164. This copy belongs to the issue in which Huygens' initials are on the title rather than his full name (no priority established). A fine and fresh copy. ❧ Dibner, Heralds of Science, 146. [LOCKE, John.]
London: by Eliz. Holt, for Thomas Basset,, 1690. In Four Books. Folio (320 × 188 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked and relined. Collector's maroon morocco-backed slipcase (spine slightly rubbed and faded) and folding cloth chemise. Bookplate of James Strohn Copley. Original rear free endpaper preserved, with early manuscript notes, torn part of another similar leaf with notes mounted on rear free endpaper, contemporary marginalia throughout. Title leaf sometime washed to remove an early inscription, now a little browned in places and with minor paper restoration at fore-edge margin and extreme upper outer corner without affecting text, prelims somewhat browned towards head, a little browning in places elsewhere, a good copy. First edition, the Holt issue (traditionally considered the first), with two emendations in the author's hand. Locke worked for nearly two decades on his investigation of "the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge," concluding that "though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension, it can at least be 'sufficient'; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance, and can to some extent control our own destiny" (PMM). The significance of his Essay was immediately recognized: it quickly ran to several editions and was popularized on the Continent by French translations. "Few books in the literature of philosophy have so widely represented the spirit of the age and country in which they appeared, or have so influenced opinion afterwards" (Fraser). A Catholic Antiphonal containing the Propers of the office according to the Cistercian use, and employing the black notes and red staves of the Georgian musical notation. This copy was acquired by the Cistercian monastery in Salem in southern Germany (Baden) following the fire in 1697 that destroyed many of the buildings. The monastery secularized in 1802 and the library was moved to Peterhausen, and thence was sold to the University of Heidelberg. A portion of the library, including this volume, was acquired by Baron von Lassberg. The Lassberg collection of post-incunabula was sold en bloc to an Anglo-American bookselling consortium in 1999. The Cistercian Monastery at Salem was an important imperial abbey, founded in 1136 by Bl. Frowin (a companion of St. Bernard of Clairvaux). It was noted in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bidloo, Govard (anatomist) and Gerard de Lairesse (artist)
Hardcover. Very good. Broadside, 305 x 470 (visible image size), professionally matted and framed. An extraordinary 17th-century anatomical engraving, justly celebrated by anatomists and artists alike for over 300 years; the Surrealists found it particularly fascinating. "This stark dissection -- with ragged flesh fully displayed and hands bound with a cord -- signals a commitment to a higher level of realism. To our eyes, the picture may suggest a distressing indifference to, or even pleasure in, human suffering" (Dream Anatomy, National Library of Medicine, 2003). "Govard Bidloo was born in Amsterdam in 1649 and became professor of anatomy at The Hague from 1688 to 1694, when he took the same position at Leyden. He was later appointed the physician of William III of England, who was originally Dutch, until the King's death in 1702. In that year, Bidloo returned to Leyden to take his old position until his death there in 1713. "Best known as an anatomist, Govard Bidloo's most famous work was his monumental Anatomia humani corporis published in Amsterdam in 1685, containing 107 copperplate engravings. Like so many large and expensive anatomical atlases of the time, the work was not a financial success, and in 1690 he published a Dutch translation entitled, Ontleding des menschelyken lichaams, using the same plates.
