PETTY, William.
Very rare complete copy of this collection of Petty's essays on demography and economics, "including the influential Political Arithmetick (first published 1690), a major comparative study of the wealth and economic policies of England and her rivals France and Holland. This was the first of Petty's works to contain in its title the phrase he had coined to describe the application of statistics to economic theory and policy. Petty was the first to employ numerical evaluation in economics, and his work provided the decisive impulse toward econometrics and the general application of statistics" (Norman).

❧Garrison-Morton 1688; Norman 1688 (lacking several of the part-titles).

After studying French, mathematics, astronomy and navigation at Caen, several years in the Royal Navy, and during the Civil Wars several more years of study, particularly medicine, at Utrecht, Petty (1623-87) returned to England in 1647, got his doctor's degree in medicine, and became Professor of Anatomy at Oxford in 1650, where he made the acquaintance of John Graunt. In 1652 he was appointed physician to the army in Ireland, and from 1655 to 1656 he undertook a survey of Ireland, called the 'down survey,' as a basis for the distribution of forfeited lands to army officers and soldiers. Petty himself also took over a great deal of land, which was to make him a very wealthy man. Returning to England in 1659, he joined a group of natural scientists who met at Gresham College and eventually founded the Royal Society in 1662. After the Restoration he was knighted and appo … [Click Below for Full Description]

(ENGRAVED BOOK - PASSION OF CHRIST). LE CLERC, SÉBASTIEN
Augsburg: Johann Ulrich Kraus, 1690. Hardcover. Passion Engravings on a Small Scale, but with Memorable Results. 152 x 203 mm (6 x 8"). [38] leaves. Very fine contemporary mottled calf, covers with gilt scallop and palmette border, large central lozenge composed of fleuron and coronet tools, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with central floral spray and acorn cornerpieces, red morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH ENGRAVED TITLE AND 37 PLATES BY JOHANN ULRICH KRAUS AFTER SÉBASTIEN LE CLERC, all mounted within engraved decorative frames on thick paper. A little wear to joints, boards splaying slightly, leather with a touch of pitting (as always with mottled calf), isolated mild stains or foxing to the generous margins, one short closed marginal tear, but AN EXTREMELY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY COPY, the engravings quite clean, fresh, and richly impressed, and the binding with nothing approaching a significant condition issue. This is a fine copy, in an especially appealing binding, of the complete series of Le Clerc's dramatic "Passion of Christ," first printed in Paris in 1692 and here reproduced by a leading Augsburg engraver. A few years after the Paris edition appeared, our Johann Ulrich Kraus (1645-1719) re-engraved the plates and mounted them on notably thick paper within specially engraved thick frames. Despite the small size of the engravings (they measure about 65 x 95 mm., not counting the frames), the result is impressive, the composition, detail, and sophisticated use of light all being notable. The son of a goldsmith, Le Clerc (1637-1714) … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Those of his operas which did prove successful and were revived several times (Zéphire et Flore and Alcide) were written in collaboration with other composers, the first with his brother Jean-Louis and a music master, Pierre Vignon, the second with Marin Marais. On the other hand, the work to which he put his own name alone, Orphée, was hissed at its first performances. However, the act set in the underworld still merits attention for the prominence it gives to accompanied recitative, one of the most original features of the late 17th-century French operatic repertory." Kalifornien -
Kupferstich-Karte nach Pierre Duval bei J. Hoffmann, Nürnberg ca. 1690, koloriert. Ca. 9,4 x 12 cm. Mc Laughlin, California as an Island No, 30, state 4 (with the page no. 93 top right). Burden 353 (DuVal). Rare miniature map of California and parts of Mexico and the Southwest, covering parts of Oregon and Idaho. The map shows Cibola, Anian, Quivira and many other mythical places. A fine example of California as an island, one of only a handful of maps to focus on the island as it main feature. The projection is based on Sanson and has been first published in Paris in 1661 in the first edition of DuVal's 'Geographie Universelle'. CORONELLI, Vincenzo
Venice: Vincenzo Coronelli, 1690. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 23.75" x 17.75". This decorative map of Corsica features a detailed depiction of the island with elaborate embellishments. Working circa 1696, Coronelli has drawn the coastlines in exacting detail, surrounding them with dark shading that makes the island seem to pop off the page. Coastal rivers, inlets, ports, towns, villages, and smaller islands are labeled in Italian, and mountains and trees are depicted pictorially. In the corners of the map, elegant cartouches attest to the island's beauty. Most elaborate is the title cartouche in the upper left, a large scroll decorated with flowers upon which two men and a dog loll. In the upper right, a draped fabric that bears the map's scales is dressed with two angels, one holding the cross; a coat of arms; and exquisite tassels and plumage. In the lower left, vines encircle a wreath containing the cross of the Genoa flag, and in the lower right, a similar design holds the silhouette that adorns the Corsican flag. The elegant semi-circular Latin text labeling the Mediterranean brings the map's design into harmony---as was characteristic of Coronelli's work, the map is labeled in both Italian and Latin. It appeared in Coronelli's rare "Atlante Veneto," one of the most decorative and ornate atlases of the 17th century. The map is in excellent condition with no chips or tears and full margins. Crisp, dark impression on thick paper. Italian text on verso. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematic … [Click Below for Full Description]

1690. Gorgeous old color example of this scarce decorative map of Africa. The map became the standard for subsequent maps of Africa, originally based upon the work of Frederick De Wit. There are a number of notable deep inlets on the southeast coast. The large lakes and numerous rivers are also of note. The origin of the Nile is based upon Ptolemy. The kingdom of Monomotapa comes down a far as the Rio de Infante. There are few names in the interior of the Cape. Decorative title cartouche and a number of animal vignettes within the map.

[Popple, William.]
London: Awnsham Churchill, 1690 First edition. Contemporary sheep with gilt arms on both covers of James Douglas, second duke of Queensberry and first duke of Dover (1662-1711), Secretary of State for Scotland. . Small octavo. Rebacked to style. Ink annotation on front free endpaper, listing the other former owners, including the second, third and fourth Dukes of Buccleuch, army office John Clark Kennedy (1817-1867), and others. Armorial bookplate of Clark Kennedy. Board edges lightly worn in places, but a very good and interesting copy of a rare work. Martin Clifford (1624-1677), the atheist headmaster of the Charterhouse, anonymously published A Treatise on Humane Reason in 1674. It called for a critical confutation of constituted authority, faith in one's own reasoned convictions, and tolerance toward the beliefs and opinions of others. It caused considerable controversy and was a precursor of Locke's famous Essay (1690). William Popple (1638-1708), the Unitarian minister who later translated Locke's Letter on Toleration from the Latin (1689), published a French translation of Clifford's work in 1682. It was instrumental in spreading the controversy to the continent. The present work was considered of unknown authorship, but is now known to have been written by Popple. It undoubtedly owes much to the ideas of both Clifford and Locke.

"Crispin." Pseud of (Raymond Poisson, Parisian actor d.1690). [Original copper plate engraving on paper]. Paris: Audran, ca. 1710 (later impression on laid paper, ca. 1800). After a painting by J. Netscher, engraved by Edelinck. With legend. Plate size 14"x17." A few marginal tears, slight browning. Good impression. This large engraving depicts "Crispin" played by Poisson, in his highly imaginative costume, bowing to the audience with hat in right hand. "Crispin" is the name of the character who was a dutiful captain and son of Scaramouche. The character was invented by Poisson. Poisson was so successful in this role that he began a dynasty of actors who played Crispin in like manner until the mid-18th century.

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Bibliografia: Suarez, Early Mapping of the Pacific, p. 98. Dimensioni 610x455. This map shows the western coast of the Americas, including a nice example of the famous cartographic myth of California as an island. To the west of this is the large, vaguely drawn "Terra De Iesso," reflecting the current unknown state of the lands to the north of Japan and west of America. Coronelli shows the 1615-1617 route of Jacob Lemaire round Cape Horn and west across the Pacific. Lemaire was the first to sail south of Tierra del Fuego, proving that it was not part of the great, unknown Southern Continent. The map … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Bibliografia: Clancy, The mapping of Terra Australis, Map 6.20; Leighly 90; Tooley, The mapping of Australia 350. One of the Great maps of the Pacific, strikingly engraved and embellished with cherub and decorative title cartouche.
