WIT, Frederick de (1630-1706).
Amsterdam: F. de Wit, 1690. WIT, Frederick de (1630-1706). Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee. Amsterdam: F. de Wit, 1690. Folio (21 x 12 4/8 inches). Engraved allegorical title-page showing the globe surmounted by the figure of Atlas with printed index listing 27 subjects on verso, 27 double-page engraved charts, and 1 fold-out map, all with FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND COLOR (occasional light offsetting). 19th-century calf antique with blind floral tooled borders (re-backed, repair on front hinge). Provenance: engraved armorial bookplate of Baron de Launoit on the front free endpaper; Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, Lord Wardington (1924-2005), Library of Important Atlases and Geographies, Sotheby's 10th October 2006, lot 541. A late issue of this remarkable sea atlas. A dramatic image of Atlas pressed against the ceiling of a star filled sky, perched at the top of a globe depicting Europe, Asia, and Africa (with the western edge of Australia unidentified in the lower right) opens this incredible atlas. All maps very clear with coloring still bright and vibrant, particularly the large fold-out map of Europe and North Africa. Pages turn as if they were bound yesterday with maps that lay flat, making this a wonderful presentation copy. More than a collection of detailed maps of every known corner of the Earth, his work serves as a world tour in the form of the fanciful and imaginative cartouches and map embellishments that illustrate this impressive atlas. A wonderful polar projection is enrobed in scenes of whalers killing and processing what look like giant trout, and a particularly ja … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Kšnigsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with English County Maps, a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name Atlas Major, there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of most of the cities of the world (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Ordines Plantarum quae sunt Flore irregulari. Lipsiae, sumptibus Autoris, C. Güntheri; C. Fleischeri; J.H. Richteri, 1690-1699. 4 parts (bound in one). Large-Folio (447 x 290mm). With 385 engraved plates. Contemporary full calf, gilt coat of arms on covers, spine with 6 raised bands, richly gilt, with red gilt lettered label (very skilful rebacking). Our copy collates as Junk's copy, see Junk Rara I, p. 60. Nissen has one plate less than the above copy. All published by Rivinus, a supplement part was published much later in 1764 by C.L. Ludwig with 17 plates. The present work is a great botanical rarity, there was no copy in the Plesch collection and only a copy with 244 plates, in rather bad condition, in the de Belder collection. "The principal strain of endemic German taxonomy goes back to A.Q. Rivinus. and his 'Introductio generalis in rem herbariam' of 1690. Rivinus was, in Linnaean terminology, a 'corollist'. He rejected the age-old basic split in the plant kingdom between trees and herbs and proposed a purely utilitarian system based on the structure of the corolla . Rivinus did not pretend to propose a natural system; like his contemporary Tournefort, he just wanted a simple and orderly device to classify plants. This Rivinian strain of thought was taken up by quite a few of the later German authors." (Stafleu. Linnaeus and the Linnaeans pp. 241-242).August Quirinius Rivinus (Leipzig 1652-1723, Latinised name for Bachmann) was professor of pathology at the University of Leipzig. Manuscript; Ledrou, Pierre Lambert; Farvacques, F
1690. Volume of Eleven Late-Seventeenth Century Legal Manuscripts from Louvain [Manuscript]. Ledrou, Pierre Lambert, Bishop. Farvacques, Francois. Dictata T. LL. Ledrou e Farvacques [spine title]. Louvain?, c. 1690. -[500] ff. Eleven parts. Quarto (8" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary calf, gilt spine with raised bands. Rubbed, backstrip worn and partially detached, corners bumped and worn, boards beginning to separate, but secured by cords, several endleaves lacking, final leaf and rear endleaf detached, some edgewear to first few and final leaves, a few cracks to text block. First 3/5 of the volume in a fine, neat secretarial hand, remaining 2/5 in larger, but equally legible, hand. Light toning, somewhat heavier in places. * According to the spine title and interior notes, this collection of legal works are writings by two eminent Belgian members of the Order of St. Augustin: Bishop Pierre Lambert Ledrou, titular bishop of Porfireone from 1692 to 1721, and Francois Farvacques. Both men were professors of law at the University of Louvain in the late 1600s and early years of the eighteenth century. The spine title describes the contents as "Dictata," that is, lessons. The neat hand, clear organization and absence of serious revisions suggest they are lectures or texts for publication. The first parts are lessons by Ledrou. It begins with an 8-page introduction with descriptions of 13 cases. The following section (c. 50 ff.) is headed "Tractatus de Legibus Quid Lex et Quotuplex." It has neat additions and marginal notes in the same hand as the main text. The following lesson, which i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. English. Authorized (i.e., King James version). 1690.
London: Printed by Charles Bill & Thomas Newcomb, 1690 [or possibly 1692]. 8vo (20 cm; 8"). [573] ff. [also bound in at rear] Bible. O.T. Psalms. English. Paraphrases. 1693. Sternhold & Hopkins. The whole book of psalms. Collected into English metre. London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1693. 8vo. 87, [1] p.    A handsomely bound late 17th-century printing of the King James Bible, this begins with an engraved title-leaf featuring the title within an architectural frame; the text of the Bible is printed on thin paper in double-column format. => The entire volume has been ruled by hand in red.    The title-page of the New Testament is dated 1694 and bears the imprint "Printed by Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd," and the signing of the signatures is absolutely continuous from the O.T. — that is the last leaf of the O.T. is Iii6 and the title-leaf of the N.T. is Iiii7. Curiously, on the engraved main title-page the date area shows erasure of a date that might have been 1692 or 1682 in roman numerals. It is possible that the 1690 date in roman is in excellent pen and ink facsimile.    Binding: Contemporary black goat with a complicated and beautiful overall pattern of gilt tooling using acorn, star, and flower devices, a leaf-vine roll, a double- and a triple-fillet, hashed triangles, and a few other tools. The tall slim central panel is accented at all corners with heart forms, these revealed by three survivors on the back cover to have been => red leather onlays. Spine also elaborately gilt-tooled with some of the same tools reappearing and … [Click Below for Full Description]
