Mascella superiore frazionata spaccò e la coda. Abbastanza buona copia. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. Reliure en pleine basane brune d'époque. Dos à nerfs très orné. Cortona, Pietro da (1596-1669) and Carlo Cesio or Carlo Cesi (1622-1682)
Rome: Dominico de Rossi, Jo. Jacobi (Jo. Jacobi de Rubeis), circa 1690. Oblong folio. 45.5 x 69 cm. (17.75 x 27.25 inches) page size. Suite of 16 numbered engravings. Housed in a custom portfolio with painted boards, leather spine, large embossed leather label, leather ties and leather corners by the celebrated Russian-American binder Alexandr (Sasha) Mosalov. OCLC Number: 27358448 Pietro da Cortona (1 November 1596/7 - 16 May 1669) was born Pietro Berrettini, but is primarily known by the name of his native town of Cortona in Tuscany. Carlo Cesio or Carlo Cesi (1622-1682) was a painter and engraver of the Roman school. Cesio was born at Androdoco, in the Roman States, in 1622. The ceiling of the Galleria Pamphilj was painted by Pietro da Cortona with the Legend of Aeneas in 1651-54. After the mid-seventeenth century it became the new pattern for palace galleries, not only in Italy but also in Paris, where in 1704-07 a gallery was appended to the Palais Royal and painted with the same subject matter by Antoine Coypel. The form and iconography of the Galleria Pamphilj continued to be major influences well into the eighteenth century - even on the work of artists with no direct contacts with Rome, e.g. on Lorenzo de' Ferrari in Genoa. Some foxing.

Rara. Uncommon map from "Mercurio Geografico", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. The Italian cartographer Cantelli introduced a style in cartography that was followed and developed by Coronelli: his maps are very attractive and finely engraved, with elaborate strapworks and decorations.
Detailed map of Fiandre by Vincenzo Coronelli. Coronelli was both a cleric and an encyclopedist, with a particular interest in geography and cartography. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences. Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. By the end of the 17th century, Coronelli was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date.
