First edition of Hevelius’s great star atlas, together with his Prodromus and Star Catalogue, as issued, and including the Annus Climactericus, normally found on its own. Hevelius’ star atlas was one of the few such actually produced by a professional working astronomer, as distinct from a map publisher or amateur populariser such as Piccolomini, Bayer, Cellarius, Doppelmayr, etc. It set the standard for celestrial cartography and was the source for the production of celestial globes, such as those by Einmart and Gerehard and Leonhard Valk. The star atlas contains 73 constellations, of which 12 were introduced here for the first time by Hevelius. The star maps were drawn by Andreas Stech and engraved by Charles de La Haye, though North has … [Click Below for Full Description]

CUQ
[Click Below for Full Description]

LETH, Hendrik de.
, . . The Anglo-Dutch Garden 24 (ca. 1690 state of general view only); Springer, p. 45 (without the general view); Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXVIII, B. Stoopendael 24 (ca. 1690 state of general view only); not in Berlin Kat. Very rare print series of the palace, gardens and other buildings of the Dutch royal estate Soestdijk, built mostly by Willem III, Prince of Orange, Dutch head of state and from 1689 also King of England. The estate passed to his son and then his grandson Willem Karel Hendrik Friso (1711-1751), Prince of Orange, who became the Dutch head of state in 1731 as Stadholder Willem IV. The large general view, with the city of Utrecht barely visible on the horizon, is rarely found with the series, but De Leth seems likely to have issued them together. Bastiaen Stoopendael (1637-1693) engraved and published the general view soon after Willem was crowned King William III of England in 1689. Hendrik de Leth (1703-1766) and his father Andries published views of Diemermeer by Stoopendael's son Daniel in 1725 and Hendrik seems likely to have added his name to the general view and published it together with the present numbered series soon after his father's death in 1731, perhaps for the occasion of Willem IV's appointment as Stadholder in that year. Well-printed with ample margins. The 16 views have been cut down, leaving a margin of about 2 mm, and mounted two to a leaf on 18th-century(?) unwatermarked laid paper. Very good copy of a very rare print series of King William III's Dutch royal palace and gardens.

Caulfield, Richard (editor).
18.5 cm x 22.5 cm. XXX, 1191 pages. Original hardcover. Good condition with some clear signs of wear and tear on external cover and page edges, some stains on page edges and some marks on pages inside. Includes record of Mayors and Sheriffs of Cork from 1690 to 1734 / A charter to incorporate the Guild of Wholesale Merchants / An account of how the Earl of Inchiquin was presented with his freedom / The appointment of Sir James Jeffryes as Governor of Cork / Proposal for Benj Pike to prove his right to the fishery of the river. "Richard Caulfield's The Council Book of the Corporation of Cork from 1609 to 1643 and from 1690 to 1800 are proceedings of the municipal authorities of Cork as they took place. Caulfield's work is an attempt to provide a faithful record of history rather than a romantic version. He identified two methods of writing history. The first is to present the facts as they are and leave it to the reader to form his own impressions. The second is to present what the impressions have made on the writer's mind and present them to the reader. Caulfield intended to marry both methods together by presenting a series of samples and extracts to give a truer picture of the times. He used sources in the Library of the British Museum , the Bodlein library, Oxford , the Treasury of the Corporation of Cork and other sources. Richard Caulfield (1823-1887) was secretary, librarian and custodian of the Royal Cork Institution and librarian for Queen's College Cork. It is said of him that on several occasion he was chosen to referee the various sides in significant histo … [Click Below for Full Description]

The catalogue at the end is rare and was added to only a few copies." (Neville). "The book is not common and has not been reprinted except for the Geneva edition" (Fulton). It "was written by Boyle the year before his death. He explains in the preface that he borrowed the title from Santorio's Medicina Statica, and he might have apologized for the term 'medicina', for, in modern parlance, the book is essentially a monograph devoted to a special branch of physics... it was Boyle who first directed the attention of physicists and chemists to the importance of specific gravity. Pages 145 to 224 are of considerable interest in the history of mineralogy showing the specific gravities of various ores. Near Fine....

FIRST EDITIONS, first issues, without half-title and with uncancelled title-page mentioning "John Wyat" in the imprint. "This tract has certain human interest since in the Preface to Part I, and also in the text itself, Boyle discusses the reasons why as a professed scientist he has devoted so much attention to religion, or between reason and dogmatic faith - and he wishes to state his conviction (Fulton, p.130). The second part of The Christian virtuoso was not published until 1744. "Reflections upon a theological distinction" (Wing B4019) and "Greatness of mind, promoted by Christianity" (Wing B3983) each have separate dated title page, pagination, and register. LA FONTAINE
Amsterdam, Antoine Michils, 1690.
Copper engraving, mm 607x900, two-sheets map, already joined, of the continent engraved in the typical flamboyant Coronelli's style. From "Corso geografico" with no text on verso. The remarkable Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718), encyclopaedist, geographer, inventor and Doctor of Theology, was citizen of the Republic of Venice. He was also one of the most prominent mapmakers and publishers in Europe of his day.Vincenzo Coronelli, in addition to being an ordined Franciscan priest who eventually became Father General of his order, was also one of the most prominent mapmakers and publishers in Europe of his day. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685, a year after he founded the world's earliest geographic society, "L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti" in the same city. A good example with little foxing and some minor restorations in margins.

DUVAL (Nicolas)
This is really a masterpiece of engraving". [Attributes: First Edition]
