Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI
Venezia, 1690. Detailed map by Vincenzo Coronelli. Coronelli was both a cleric and an encyclopedist, with a particular interest in geography and cartography. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences. Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. By the end of the 17th century, Coronelli was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date. 620 880mm

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI
Venezia, 1690. Elaborate map of the Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The map is rich in historical and etymological notes, but also notes of costume. Coronelli derived his information from that of Nolin, who had published a similar map in Paris ten years earlier. Curious is the inscription at the bottom center, on the subject of the seabed so-called Grand Banks of Newfoundland: in this area, from 15 April to the end of July, we held a real contest of the cod fishery, including those depths were rich, in order to obtain the codfish. Much attention is also in place names, often provided in both English and French. Other peculiarity, rather unusual for a map, is indication of depth of the seabed. The fish surrounding the cartouche are an obvious allusion to the main industry of the regio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venezia, 1690. Elegant map of the Azores and the islands of the archipelago, with a large highly decorative inset of Angra on the island of Tercera, held aloft by Mermaids. Detail is limited to coastal place names. The beautifully composed title cartouche features shells, coral, fish and pearls. The map exhibits the fine engraving style typical of maps from this coveted Venetian atlas. Example taken from the Coronelli'Isolario, previously published in Corso Geografico Universale. Copper engraving, in good condition. Imagens de Portugal e Ilhas Atlanticas, p. 130 n. 47. 620 460mm

LOCKE, John.
Eliz. Holt for Thomas Basset, London, 1690. 1 blank leaf + TP + [i]-[iv] = The Epistle Dedicatory + [v]-[ix] = The Epistle to the Reader + [x] = Errata + 1-362 + [363]-[384] = Contents + 1 blank leaf, small Folio arranged as a Quarto, 7¼" x 12¼" (inner). First Edition, First Issue, (Yolton 61A).First edition, first issue - the title page listing Eliz. Holt, with the "SS" in "ESSAY" correctly printed and the thirty typographical ornaments. This copy has four of six possible misnumbered pages for this edition which Yolton notes appearing in "many copies of both issues, indiscriminately": 85 as 83, 287 as 269, 296 as 294 and 303 as 230 (in some copies 76 is 50 and 77 is 55). In addition, page 55 has the called-for misprint "Underwandings" at the bottom of the page and the Roman numerals for the chapter numbers reading incorrectly at the top of pages 57 and 263. Finally, page 90 has deleted the paragraph indicator "§24." [See Jean S. Yolton, John Locke, A Descriptive Bibliography, Thoemmes Press, 1998, pp. 70 for details on these variations.]In his Introduction to the Clarendon Edition of the Essay [Oxford, 1975], Peter Nidditch "estimate[ed] that about 900 copies of the First Edition were printed, by far the greater number of them belonging to the Holt issue." (Nidditch, pp. xviii-xix) while Yolton, citing this estimate, claims: "We do not know the number of copies printed; Peter Nidditch has estimated about 900 copies were published, chiefly of the Holt issue. But it is possible there were as few as 500." [Yolton, pp 69-70]Yolton, in her definitive bibliography clearly identi … [Click Below for Full Description]
