LA QUINTINYE, (Jean-Baptiste de)
Paris: Claude Barbin 1690. First edition of what must be regarded as the most influential book in the history of pomology. Although trained as a lawyer, a visit to the gardens of Italy in 1656 while serving as tutor to the son of Jean Tombonneau produced in La Quinitinie an interest in horticulture which he pursued upon his return to France. His genius was readily recognized by a series of wealthy employers, including the Prince de Condé at Chantilly and Colbert at Sceaux. He also worked alongside Le Notre in creating the jardin potager for Fouquet at Vaux-le-Vicomte, and when the envious Louis XIV put Fouquet in jail and seized Vaux for himself, La Quintinie was sent with Le Notre to Versailles. After first taking charge of the old fruit and vegetable gardens there he designed and oversaw the construction of the new Potager du Roi between 1677 and 1683. It survives very much intact to this day. La Quintinie traveled to Italy and England to study the state of horticulture in those countries. In England he visited Evelyn and reputedly refused an offer from Charles II to take charge of the royal gardens there. La Quintinie was particularly famous for producing fruits and vegetables out of season. He conducted numerous experiments toward this end and did much to perfect the art of forcing. His INSTRUCTION POUR LES JARDINS FRUITIERS ET POTAGERS offers an instructive treatise based on the results of these experiments and discoveries. He made extensive use of espalier planting at Versailles, a new technique introduced to him by Arnauld D'Andilly. His careful observations on this … [Click Below for Full Description]

After publishing several general atlases himself he became the associate of Pierre Mariette, a publisher of prints. In 1647 Sanson accused the Jesuit Philippe Labbe of plagiarizing him in his Pharus Galliae Antiquae; in 1648 he lost his eldest son Nicolas, killed during the Fronde. Among the friends of his later years was the great Condé. He died in Paris on 7 July 1667. Two younger sons, Adrien (d. 1708) and Guillaume (d. 1703), succeeded him as geographers to the king.In 1692 Hubert Jaillot collected Sanson's maps in an Atlas nouveau. Mattaheus WAGNER
Augsburg. Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1690. Rara. C. PEPYS, Samuel.
London Printed anno MDCXC. First edition. 8vo (182 x 112 mm). [2], 214, [18] pp., large paper copy, inscribed "Ex dono Authoris" on the title page. With the portrait of Pepys by White after Kneller and folding accounts table, title printed in red and black, internally clean, contemporary mottled calf, A great example - A presentation copy from Pepys; royal Provenance (from the library of the future King William IV); and a large paper copy on thick paper. This issue was intended for private distribution, and instead of the imprint "printed for Ben. Griffin, and are to be sold by Sam. Keble", it reads instead "Printed anno MDCXC". This is a large paper copy, and the paper used is somewhat thicker and more substantial than that used for the ordinary copies. "Pepys had long intended to compile a naval history: the idea seems to have begun in 1664, when Coventry suggested he should write an account of the First Anglo-Dutch War. The scale of the proposed work gradually lengthened, and many books and notes were acquired with this distant prospect in view. Enforced leisure from 1679 to 1684 had allowed for further research, Evelyn providing much arcane knowledge from his own store. Pepys's renewed leisure, ample means, and reasonable health during the 1690s seemed likely to generate the great work, but it never came. The Memoires of 1690 were his only publication" (ODNB). Here the diarist looks back at the state of the Navy in 1679. Included is his proposition to the King for repairing the damage done to the Navy while Pepys was out of office for five years on account of accusation … [Click Below for Full Description]
