1685-1690. . Zaragoza-Barcelona. . 1 Vol. . . Cuarto Menor. . . [Click Below for Full Description]

LA QUINTINYE, (Jean-Baptiste de)
Paris: Claude Barbin 1690. First edition of what must be regarded as the most influential book in the history of pomology. Although trained as a lawyer, a visit to the gardens of Italy in 1656 while serving as tutor to the son of Jean Tombonneau produced in La Quinitinie an interest in horticulture which he pursued upon his return to France. His genius was readily recognized by a series of wealthy employers, including the Prince de Condé at Chantilly and Colbert at Sceaux. He also worked alongside Le Notre in creating the jardin potager for Fouquet at Vaux-le-Vicomte, and when the envious Louis XIV put Fouquet in jail and seized Vaux for himself, La Quintinie was sent with Le Notre to Versailles. After first taking charge of the old fruit and vegetable gardens there he designed and oversaw the construction of the new Potager du Roi between 1677 and 1683. It survives very much intact to this day. La Quintinie traveled to Italy and England to study the state of horticulture in those countries. In England he visited Evelyn and reputedly refused an offer from Charles II to take charge of the royal gardens there. La Quintinie was particularly famous for producing fruits and vegetables out of season. He conducted numerous experiments toward this end and did much to perfect the art of forcing. His INSTRUCTION POUR LES JARDINS FRUITIERS ET POTAGERS offers an instructive treatise based on the results of these experiments and discoveries. He made extensive use of espalier planting at Versailles, a new technique introduced to him by Arnauld D'Andilly. His careful observations on this … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Plate: Mountain Landscape with figures and a lake with towns (Hollstein 73). 17 th. c. ed. on paper with no watermark visible. Expert assessment. Provenance: with collection mark: vE (in circle): (van Eeghen, Lugt 385) Etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Very good. Excellent impression. General age related toning. Staining at top middle. With narrow margins, as common. Some remains of paper tape on rear from previous storing. This item has not been washed, cleaned, bleached, restored. Please study scan carfully. Storage location: Q2-263 LA The overall size is ca. 6.6 x 4.5 inch.
