CORONELLI, Vincenzo
Venice: Vincenzo Coronelli, 1690. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 23.75" x 17.75" This beautiful map of the East Indies includes the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, and the north coast of Australia, depicting the region when it was the center of the VOC (Dutch) trading network. Sand banks, inlets, ports, towns, villages, are labeled in Italian. The title cartouche in the lower left shows winged cherub mermaids emerging from the water carrying the title in a banner format. Creative engraved line surrounds the island nations. The map is in good condition, with a minor stain near centerfold and lower left corner repaired. Blank verso. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was known best for his globes, which he made for prominent rulers such as Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. This map is an excellent example of his work.

ALLARD, CAROLI 1648-1709
Allard, 1690. Generally in fine condition with the exception of some oxidization of the green pigment, and light browning of the paper.. Allard's maps generally followed those of other publishers, but a few were his own. His publications superseded those of Blaeu and Jansson and are considerably prized by collectors as they are quite rare. A fine map in original colour, with a large decorative titlepiece showing a negress, cherubs, lion, ostrich, snakes, crocodiles and pyramids. Size 50 x 58 cm, in picture mount behind glass. .

Cortona, Pietro da (1596-1669) and Carlo Cesio or Carlo Cesi (1622-1682)
Rome: Dominico de Rossi, Jo. Jacobi (Jo. Jacobi de Rubeis), circa 1690. Oblong folio. 45.5 x 69 cm. (17.75 x 27.25 inches) page size. Suite of 16 numbered engravings. Housed in a custom portfolio with painted boards, leather spine, large embossed leather label, leather ties and leather corners by the celebrated Russian-American binder Alexandr (Sasha) Mosalov. OCLC Number: 27358448 Pietro da Cortona (1 November 1596/7 - 16 May 1669) was born Pietro Berrettini, but is primarily known by the name of his native town of Cortona in Tuscany. Carlo Cesio or Carlo Cesi (1622-1682) was a painter and engraver of the Roman school. Cesio was born at Androdoco, in the Roman States, in 1622. The ceiling of the Galleria Pamphilj was painted by Pietro da Cortona with the Legend of Aeneas in 1651-54. After the mid-seventeenth century it became the new pattern for palace galleries, not only in Italy but also in Paris, where in 1704-07 a gallery was appended to the Palais Royal and painted with the same subject matter by Antoine Coypel. The form and iconography of the Galleria Pamphilj continued to be major influences well into the eighteenth century - even on the work of artists with no direct contacts with Rome, e.g. on Lorenzo de' Ferrari in Genoa. Some foxing.

Bidloo, Govard (anatomist) and Gerard de Lairesse (artist)
Amsterdam: By de weduwe van Joannes van Someren, de erfgenaamen van Joannes van Dyk, Hendrik en de weduwe van Dirk Boom, 1690. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. Broadside, 305 x 470 (visible image size), professionally matted and framed An extraordinary 17th-century anatomical engraving, justly celebrated by anatomists and artists alike for over 300 years; the Surrealists found it particularly fascinating. "This stark dissection -- with ragged flesh fully displayed and hands bound with a cord -- signals a commitment to a higher level of realism. To our eyes, the picture may suggest a distressing indifference to, or even pleasure in, human suffering" (Dream Anatomy, National Library of Medicine, 2003). "Govard Bidloo was born in Amsterdam in 1649 and became professor of anatomy at The Hague from 1688 to 1694, when he took the same position at Leyden. He was later appointed the physician of William III of England, who was originally Dutch, until the King's death in 1702. In that year, Bidloo returned to Leyden to take his old position until his death there in 1713. "Best known as an anatomist, Govard Bidloo's most famous work was his monumental Anatomia humani corporis published in Amsterdam in 1685, containing 107 copperplate engravings. Like so many large and expensive anatomical atlases of the time, the work was not a financial success, and in 1690 he published a Dutch translation entitled, Ontleding des menschelyken lichaams, using the same plates. The illustrations in Bidloos' work were drawn by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) and engraved by Abraham Blooteling (1640-1690) and Pe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lawrence Braddon
London - Unknown, 1690 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition of Lawrence Braddon's letter as regards the Earl of Essex, who died in the Tower in 1683. Lawrence Braddon (died 29 November 1724), was an English politician and writer. Braddon adopted the belief thatthe Earl of Essechad been murdered, and worked actively to collect sufficient evidence to prove the murder. He set on foot inquiries on the subject in London, and when a rumour reached him that the news of the earl's death was known at Marlborough on the very day of, if not before, the occurrence, he posted off thither. When his action became known at court, he was arrested and put under restraint. For a time he was let out on bail, but on 7 February 1683/4 he was tried with Mr. Hugh Speke at the king's bench on the accusation of conspiring to spread the belief that the Earl of Essex was murdered by some persons about him, and of endeavouring to suborn witnesses to testify the same. Braddon was found guilty on all the counts, but Speke was acquitted of the latter charge. The one was fined 1,000 pounds and the other 2,000 pounds, with sureties for good behaviour during their lives. Braddon remained in prison for five years until the landing of William III, when he was liberated. The majority of his writings refer to the Earl of Essex. Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex PC (1631 1683), whose surname is sometimes spelled Capel, was an English statesman. Condition: In a brown calf binding with marbled boards. Externally rubbed, with some wear to the spine and extremities. Internally generally firmly b … [Click Below for Full Description]
