- Plate: Mountain Landscape with figures and a lake with towns (Hollstein 73). 17 th. c. ed. on paper with no watermark visible. Expert assessment. Provenance: with collection mark: vE (in circle): (van Eeghen, Lugt 385) Etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Very good. Excellent impression. General age related toning. Staining at top middle. With narrow margins, as common. Some remains of paper tape on rear from previous storing. [JAPANESE SCROLL]. MIZUSHIMA, Bokuya (artist and scribe)
1690. Calligraphic scroll (20 x 650 cm) in Japanese. With 33 brilliant illustrations, ten in color. Title inscription at beginning and signature of scribe at end. Enclosed in a handsome paulownia wood box certified with seal and signature inside top cover by Sigemi Komatsu, an expert in "old writing." In excellent condition, with only two small marginal repairs and light discoloration at the beginning of the scroll. Extraordinary calligraphic scroll, illustrating techniques for a women to achieve beauty in the early Genruko period (1688-1704), the golden age of the Edo period (1603-1867). The desire to be beautiful is the theme of this elegant illustrated manuscript. Women were expected to be made up from early morning until late at night, even while they were in the bath. Depicted here are the secrets for makeup and hair styles (handed down through generations) with explanatory text and outstanding beauty. Some of the images show the contours of faces applying their makeup. During the Edo period there were basically only three colors for make-up: white for face powders, black for eyebrows and teeth and beni for lips. When women married they were supposed to pluck or fully shave off their eyebrows ("hikimayu") to hide their natural expression, and replace them with painted eyebrows. They also colored their teeth black, which was an important color in the expression of beauty and splendor. These customs reflected the belief that modesty of expression was a virtue and part of a woman's proper demeanor. Other images illustrate elaborate hairstyles. The kind of hairstyle a woma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Coronelli, Vincenzo
1690. Part of the set for Coronelli's largest globes, from his Libro di Globi. Engraving of the eastern coast of Brazil, with Mare del Brasil and Il Mare del Paraguay. Fine uncolored copper engraved gore with tableau at lower right depicting Pope Alessandro VI dividing the lands of the new world between Spain and Portugal thereby resolving disputes over land that arose following the discoveries of Columbus. In contrast to the common practice of the day, Coronelli was fastidious in only plotting what had been discovered, with notations citing the particular voyages or explorer; a notation at the lower left describes the discovery of "Il Fiume Paraguay" in 1512. Paper size: 13 3/4 x 19 3/4". Very light scattered fox spotting, otherwise very good.

WEIGEL, Christoph (1654-1725) – LUYKEN, Jan (1649-1712) – LUYKEN, Caspar (1672-1708).
First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Nuremberg: (circa 1690-1700). 4to (240 x 195mm). 101 leaves. Engraved title-page and 100 numbered copperplate engraved emblems by father and son engravers Jan and Caspar Luyken (or Luiken). Each emblem is printed on rectos and accompanied by a ten-line Latin verse in letterpress. Original blue paper wrappers, edges uncut; (edges lightly browned and some light marginal foxing, spine chipped with loss, but overall still very good). Ex Libris of William S. Heckscher (bookplate to front pastedown). First edition of Christoph Weigel’s Ethica naturalis; his summation of biblical ethics in moralistic prints and etchings. Christoph Weigel (the Elder) was a German engraver, art dealer and publisher. He was known to collaborate with the father and son engravers from Nurembeg, Luyken, to create masterfully engraved books. An engraver himself, Weigel is perhaps best known for his work in atlases, world geography, and universal histories. In this moralistic work, the Luyken team created striking designs of natural elements, animals, and aspects of the human condition to emphasize proverbial messages. This work sought to capture the social organization of mankind through expert engravings; they are classic examples of quality German Baroque printmaking. This copy belonged to prominent twentieth century German art historian William S. Heckscher (1904-1999), who wrote on emblem books and published the major work Reallexicon zu deutschen Kunstgeschichte, where he classified Weigel’s book as one of the encyclopedic works to follow in the footsteps of And … [Click Below for Full Description]
