In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. Lairesse, Gerard De, (attributed to) After Annibale Carracci
c1665-1690.. Extremely rare.. 17 x 13.5 cm.. Fine impression, beautiful original engraving, with large margins and fine, detailed lines. Contemporary ink notes on verso, no affect at all. Loose, without matting. Body of Christ lying on the ground, his head resting on the Vrigin, supported by another Mary; with St. John holding ChristÕs left hand and displaying its wound to St. Mary Magdalene. Stunning and very rare. Suitable for framing. Lairesse (1641-1711), born in Liege, second son of painter Renier. Known for a facial deformity (some will state syphilis), RembrandtÕs portrait of Gerard at age 25, is a famous one. He was influenced by Rembrandt, and later French neo-classical. In 1690, he lost his sight and concentrated on art theory. A draughtsman, theatrical designer, writer, and theoretician, he is best known as the celebrated Dutch painter in the years to follow RembrandtÕs death. Lairesse shows more detail and finer lines than Carracci in this beautiful scene, which is in reverse of CarracciÕs original. We attribute this work to Lairesse by the original auction purchase of this print over 20 years ago. Though, we find no other copies of this print in any institutions, reference citations, or for sale at time of description. It appears to be extremely rare.

One of the very few first hand accounts of the buccaneers in the 17th century. Written by a French nobleman, Sieur Raveneau de Lussan. He belonged to a noble but impoverished family, and embraced a military career at the age of fourteen. In 1679 he embarked for Santo Domingo in search of fortune, but was unsuccessful, and joined the buccaneers under Cornelius Laurent, sailing from Petit-Goave, 22 November, 1684. He soon left Laurent at the head of a band of his own, and in 1685 pillaged the town of Realejo in Guatemala. In 1686 his band took part in the capture of Grenada, and, not finding the booty they expected, set fire to the city. After this Lussan separated from the English pirates, but he joined them again for the purpose of attacking Guayaquil, which they took with much booty. Lussan and a part of his followers then sailed for Tehuantepec, which they captured, and went as far north as Acapulco. They returned to Mapala, a port north of Realejo, and deliberated on the route they should take to reach the Antilles. It was agreed to march to Nueva Segovia, a town situated on the Yarn or Cape river, which empties into the Atlantic. Of this expedition Voltaire said : "The retreat of the ten thousand will always be more celebrated, but i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Molto decorativa. "Richly embellished with coats of arms and four decorative cartouches, Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's map is one of the most decorative large format maps of the Mediterranean published in Italy in the 17th Century which is reaonably obtainable for collectors. Produced in association with Jean Baptiste Nolin in Paris (referenced in the lower left cartouche), this map represents one of the collaborative works between Italy's greatest 17th Century mapmaker, Coronelli, and the Nolin, one of the two great mapmakers in Paris. Their collaborative work was of great import and included perhaps the finest set of large format globes of the second half of the 17th Century. The main title of the chart is mounted on a banner in a large cartouche top left, with a secondary title in a garland above Greece. An ""explanation"" is mounted on a banner draped between an elephant, a Venetian lion and an eagle, and the scale cartouche is decorated with a pair of compasses. Around the map are scattered the armorials of cities and states. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition."

- FINE OLD COLOUR - Decorative example of Coronelli's 2-sheet Cosmographical Chart, published in Venice. Magnificent celestial chart representing the major astronomical and astrological theories from classical times to the end of the 17th century. The central engraving is a large celestial planisphere incorporating the rotations of the planets and signs of the zodiac, which is surrounded by 4 blowing windheads and 5 planetary diagrams. Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)

[Paris, circa ], 1690. Copper engraving with full original colour (Very Good, splendid full orignal colour), sheet size: 28 x 19.5 cm (11 x 7.5 inches): platemark, 21 x 15 cm (8 x 6 inches). An extremely rare, aparently separately-issued, Late 17th Century French bird’s eye view of Rhodes, Greece, depicting the 1480 Ottoman Siege of the city, with magnificent original colour. - This extremely rare and highly attractive bird’s eye view of Rhodes, Greece depicts the city during the unsuccessful Ottoman siege of the city of 1480. The Island of Rhodes was then ruled by the Crusader society of The Knights Hospitaller (formally the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem), but lying just off of the Anatolian coast, it was a prime target for Turkish conquest. From May to August 1480, a massive Ottoman force of 70,000 men and 160 ships besieged the fortified city of Rhodes, which was defended by only 10,000 troops, under the Order’s Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson. The Christian garrison weathered the siege, extending their rule over the island for another four decades. However, the Ottomans attempted another siege in 1521-2, which proved successful. Rhodes would then remain under Ottoman rule for almost four centuries. The present work maintains a panoptic view of Rhodes and the miltary action. The old walled city and the heavily fortified port appear in the foregorund; as the camps and lines of the massive Turkish jugernaut occupy the countyside in the background; while the great Ottoman flotilla is visible in the upper right. The key below the view identifies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Martinez Araujo, Juan, compiler & editor:
Mexico: Dona Maria de Benavides, viuda de Juan de Ribera, 1690. [7],93,[1] leaves. Small quarto. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties. Some staining. Text almost loose in binding, but holding, minor foxing, fore-edge margin of one leaf repaired. Overall, a good plus copy of a truly rare book. This is the first work of Catholic liturgy and ritual written and printed in the Tarascan language. It is from the pen of Juan Martinez Araujo, a secular priest who was an ecclesiastical visitor "in the mountains of the TIERRA CALIENTE of [Michoacan], and for thirty years a priest in Punguarehuato and the parish of Archangel S. Miguel de Tlazazalca." The rarity of this work has been noted for more than a century: LeClerc, writing in 1870, called it "extremement rare," and Sabin wrote, "not mentioned in Brunet, Rich, Brockhaus, or Stevens." In the twentieth century, Maggs Brothers, in their legendary series of catalogues, BIBLIOTHECA AMERICANA, failed to list a copy in any of the nine volumes of rarities for sale. Tarascan is the principal native language of the Mexican province of Michoacan, in the western region of the country. Father Gilberti's ARTE (Mexico, 1558) was the first book printed in Tarascan; between the publication of that work and this there followed a handful (i.e. fewer than a dozen) of other books in Tarascan. They were grammars, dictionaries, and doctrinal works, this being the first liturgical work printed for the Indians and their missionaries. The volume contains all of the sacraments from baptism to extreme unction, various blessings, words and acts of co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tripoli is the capital city and the largest city of Libya. The city was founded in the 7th century BC, by the Phoenicians. It is also known as Tripoli-of-the-West to distinguish it from its Phoenician sister city Tripoli, Lebanon; meaning; LevantineTripoli. It is affectionately called The Mermaid of the Mediterranean describing its turquoise waters and its whitewashed buildings. Effective Ottoman rule during this period (1551?1711) was often hampered by the local Janissary corps. Intended to function as enforcers of local administration, the captain of the Janissaries and his cronies were often the de facto rulers. In 1711, Ahmed Karamanli, a Janissary officer of Turkish origin, killed the Ottoman governor, the; Pasha;, and established himself as ruler of the Tripolitania region. By 1714, he had asserted a sort of semi-independence from the Ottoman Sultan, heralding in the Karamanli dynasty. The Pashas of Tripoli were expected to pay a regular tributary tax to the Sultan, but were in all other aspects rulers of an independent kingdom. This order of things continued under the rule of his descendants, accompanied by the brazen piracy and blackmailing until 1835, when the Ottoman Empire took advantage of an internal struggle and re-established its authority.

After studying literature at the University of Bologna, Cantelli took a position as secretary to the Marquis Obizzi de Ferrara. Eventually Cantelli relocated to Venice where developed an interest in cartography. He later traveled to Paris in the company of the French ambassador where became acquainted with the French cartographer Guillaume Sanson, as well as his contemporaries Jacques-Andre Duval and Michel-Antoin Baudrand. It was most likely the influence of these innovative French cartographers that inspired Cantelli's careful and meticulous approach, in which he based his cartography not just on earlier maps, but also very much in the French style upon accounts written by travelers and merchants regarding actual travel to foreign lands. Back in Italy, Cantelli took service Count Rinieri Marescotti, with whom he traveled extensively throughout Italy, becoming in the process acquainted with the Italian publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. It is with Rossi that Cantelli began officially publishing his maps. The earliest maps to bear the Cantelli-Rossi imprint date to 1672 and detail the Holy Land, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. Around 1680 the duo also began to publ … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORTOISESHELL BINDING/BIBLE
Amsterdam, Pieter Blaeu, and Joan Blaeu 1690 - (engraved titlepage) n.p., (engraved titlepage) n.p. Contemporary Tortoiseshell binding with 2 silver clasps and 4 silver hinges, gilt-edged and gauffred text block, 8° (Some small pieces chipped off the binding. Dutch church book in the French language containing the Geneva version of the New Testament, followed by the Psalms -with musical notation- of Clement Marot en Theodorus Beza, and the Forms. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with silver double clasp and 4 hinges. The clasps have straight catches but both the hasps and joints on the spine have an identically cut out pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity. -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century was covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive. This is considered even more for tortoise shells since the shells were not imported in large amounts, due to this the material remained expensive and only available for the rich.)(gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p., (gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p.
