Lawrence Braddon
London - Unknown, 1690 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition of Lawrence Braddon's letter as regards the Earl of Essex, who died in the Tower in 1683. Lawrence Braddon (died 29 November 1724), was an English politician and writer. Braddon adopted the belief thatthe Earl of Essechad been murdered, and worked actively to collect sufficient evidence to prove the murder. He set on foot inquiries on the subject in London, and when a rumour reached him that the news of the earl's death was known at Marlborough on the very day of, if not before, the occurrence, he posted off thither. When his action became known at court, he was arrested and put under restraint. For a time he was let out on bail, but on 7 February 1683/4 he was tried with Mr. Hugh Speke at the king's bench on the accusation of conspiring to spread the belief that the Earl of Essex was murdered by some persons about him, and of endeavouring to suborn witnesses to testify the same. Braddon was found guilty on all the counts, but Speke was acquitted of the latter charge. The one was fined 1,000 pounds and the other 2,000 pounds, with sureties for good behaviour during their lives. Braddon remained in prison for five years until the landing of William III, when he was liberated. The majority of his writings refer to the Earl of Essex. Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex PC (1631 1683), whose surname is sometimes spelled Capel, was an English statesman. Condition: In a brown calf binding with marbled boards. Externally rubbed, with some wear to the spine and extremities. Internally generally firmly b … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORONELLI, Vincenzo
Venice: Vincenzo Coronelli, 1690. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 13 3/4" x 19 3/4".This is a beautiful and rare map of Komarno or Komárno in Slovakia depicting the historic fortress where the Waag River flows into the Danube. The fortress, once part of the Kingdom of Hungary (later Austria-Hungary) now lies on the Slovakia. Created from the division of the city of Komarno , the Hungarian city on the opposite bank of the Danube is also called Komarno or Komárom. The map features a detailed plan of the fortress with a key in the lower right noting the locations marked on the map. Built in the 16th century from a medieval castle, the fortress was expanded in the 17th century , and still exists today. Over the years, the fortress has witnessed several battles and sieges including the siege by the Ottoman Turks in 1594, the attacks of the Turkish army in the 18th century and the Hungarian Revolution on 1848. Includes a beautiful cartouche and an illustration of two cherubs carrying a coat of arms. The map is in good condition with offsetting. Some edge wear where sheet bound to atlas. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was known best for his globes, which he made for prominent rulers such as Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. This map is an excellent example of his work.

CUNNINGHAM, Charles].
Cat. Nat. Mar. Mus. V, 1690; cf. Dougall, "The east coast mutinies: May-June 1797", in: The naval mutinies of 1797, pp. 147-160; for the author: Laughton & Lambert, "Cunningham, Sir Charles (1755-1834)", in: ODNB (online ed.). First edition of a rare and detailed account of the historic mutiny at the Nore (in the Thames Estuary) in 1797, involving several ships of the Royal Navy. The errata slip notes, "A few copies only of this narrative are printed for the particular friends of the author." The revolt closely followed a more peaceful mutiny at Spithead earlier that year and ended with the conviction and subsequent executions of 29 leaders. The demands of the mutineers included more shore leave, a more equal distribution of prize money and several changes to the Articles of War. The Admiralty, however, didn't accede to the demands and the prime minister eventually outlawed the mutineers. Richard Parker, elected president of the delegates of the fleet, was court-martialed and hanged aboard the 90-gun Sandwich, the ship where the mutiny had started. Parker's trial was followed by the hanging of 28 other mutineers. The author, Charles Cunningham (1755-1834), was commander of the frigate Clyde. He was refitting at the Nore in May 1797 when the mutiny broke out. A respected captain, he managed to suppress the mutiny on his ship after 17 days. With the armorial bookplate of John Gretton, Stapleford, 1st Baron Gretton (1867- 1947), on the front paste-down, and an 1849 newspaper clipping about prize money for the officers and crew of 2 ships, tipped onto p. 24. Venezia 1690 - Decorativa e ricercata carta tratta dal celebre "Corso Geografico Universale" del Coronelli. Incisione in rame, finemente colorata a mano, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Detailed map by Vincenzo Coronelli. Coronelli was both a cleric and an encyclopedist, with a particular interest in geography and cartography. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences. Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. By the end of the 17th century, Coronelli was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date. Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI
Venezia, 1690. Decorativa e ricercata carta tratta dal celebre "Corso Geografico Universale" del Coronelli. 620 880mm
