La Chausse (1660-1724), the famed antiquarian and diplomat, transformed his hobby of collecting antiquities into the science of archaeology while living in Rome. He amassed one of the most impressive collections of antiquities, many of which are illustrated and described in the present work. A century later, Leopold Cicognara held the present work in great esteem, citing it frequently. This book, a predecessor of the archaeological manual, presents a detailed inventory of ancient objects including coins, engraved marble, gems and stones, knives and receptacles used in ritual sacrifices, sculptures (some from Egypt), vases, insignia, lamps, objects with phallic motifs, etc. The descriptions by La Chausse provide historical and religious context for each item, as well as explanations of their uses. Anonymus
Artist: Anonymus ; issued in: London; date: ca, 1690. - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Lower and right margin, tear perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 60 x; - description : Map depicts the south eastern coast of India with the northh of Ceylon. The Coromandel Coast is the southeastern coast region of the Indian Subcontinent, between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal of the Indian Ocean. The coastline runs between False Divi Point in the north to Kanyakumari in the south. Its definition can also include the northwestern coast of the island of Sri Lanka. By late 1530 the Coromandel Coast was home to three Portuguese settlements at Nagapattinam, São Tomé de Meliapore, and Pulicat. Later, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Coromandel Coast was the scene of rivalries among European powers for control of the India trade. The British established themselves at Fort St George (Madras) and Masulipatnam, the Dutch at Pulicat, Sadras and Covelong, the French at Pondicherry, Karaikal and Nizampatnam, the Danish in Dansborg at Tharangambadi. Eventually the British won out, although France retained the tiny enclaves of Pondichéry and Karaikal until 1954. Chinese lacquer goods, including boxes, screens, and chests, became known as ;Coromandel; goods in the eighteenth century, because many Chinese exports were consolidated at the Coromandel ports.

TORTOISESHELL BINDING/BIBLE
Amsterdam, Pieter Blaeu, and Joan Blaeu 1690. (engraved titlepage) n.p., (engraved titlepage) n.p. Contemporary Tortoiseshell binding with 2 silver clasps and 4 silver hinges, gilt-edged and gauffred text block, 8° (Some small pieces chipped off the binding. Dutch church book in the French language containing the Geneva version of the New Testament, followed by the Psalms -with musical notation- of Clement Marot en Theodorus Beza, and the Forms. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with silver double clasp and 4 hinges. The clasps have straight catches but both the hasps and joints on the spine have an identically cut out pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity. -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century was covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive. This is considered even more for tortoise shells since the shells were not imported in large amounts, due to this the material remained expensive and only available for the rich.)(gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p., (gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. Lairesse, Gerard De, (attributed to) After Annibale Carracci
c1665-1690.. Extremely rare.. 17 x 13.5 cm.. Fine impression, beautiful original engraving, with large margins and fine, detailed lines. Contemporary ink notes on verso, no affect at all. Loose, without matting. Body of Christ lying on the ground, his head resting on the Vrigin, supported by another Mary; with St. John holding ChristÕs left hand and displaying its wound to St. Mary Magdalene. Stunning and very rare. Suitable for framing. Lairesse (1641-1711), born in Liege, second son of painter Renier. Known for a facial deformity (some will state syphilis), RembrandtÕs portrait of Gerard at age 25, is a famous one. He was influenced by Rembrandt, and later French neo-classical. In 1690, he lost his sight and concentrated on art theory. A draughtsman, theatrical designer, writer, and theoretician, he is best known as the celebrated Dutch painter in the years to follow RembrandtÕs death. Lairesse shows more detail and finer lines than Carracci in this beautiful scene, which is in reverse of CarracciÕs original. We attribute this work to Lairesse by the original auction purchase of this print over 20 years ago. Though, we find no other copies of this print in any institutions, reference citations, or for sale at time of description. It appears to be extremely rare.

Title page and 2 other pages have expertly done paper repairs on the margins, first page of the dedication has a few old library number, no other markings. One of the very few first hand accounts of the buccaneers in the 17th century. Written by a French nobleman, Sieur Raveneau de Lussan. He belonged to a noble but impoverished family, and embraced a military career at the age of fourteen. In 1679 he embarked for Santo Domingo in search of fortune, but was unsuccessful, and joined the buccaneers under Cornelius Laurent, sailing from Petit-Goave, 22 November, 1684. He soon left Laurent at the head of a band of his own, and in 1685 pillaged the town of Realejo in Guatemala. In 1686 his band took part in the capture of Grenada, and, not finding the booty they expected, set fire to the city. After this Lussan separated from the English pirates, but he joined them again for the purpose of attacking Guayaquil, which they took with much booty. Lussan and a part of his followers then sailed for Tehuantepec, which they captured, and went as far north as Acapulco. They returned to Mapala, a port north of Realejo, and deliberated on the route they should take to reach the Antilles. It was agreed to march to Nueva Segovia, a town situated on the Yarn or Cape river, which empties into the Atlantic. Of this expedition Voltaire said : "The retreat of the ten thousand will always be more celebrated, but i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Molto decorativa. "Richly embellished with coats of arms and four decorative cartouches, Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's map is one of the most decorative large format maps of the Mediterranean published in Italy in the 17th Century which is reaonably obtainable for collectors. Produced in association with Jean Baptiste Nolin in Paris (referenced in the lower left cartouche), this map represents one of the collaborative works between Italy's greatest 17th Century mapmaker, Coronelli, and the Nolin, one of the two great mapmakers in Paris. Their collaborative work was of great import and included perhaps the finest set of large format globes of the second half of the 17th Century. The main title of the chart is mounted on a banner in a large cartouche top left, with a secondary title in a garland above Greece. An ""explanation"" is mounted on a banner draped between an elephant, a Venetian lion and an eagle, and the scale cartouche is decorated with a pair of compasses. Around the map are scattered the armorials of cities and states. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition."

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Nice example of Coronelli's two sheet map of Russia, extending from the Baltic and the Black Sea in the west to Gran Tartaria in the East. Coronelli's map of Russia is one of the most detailed and elaborate maps of the 17th Century, providing tremendous detail in the fine exacting style which characterizes Coronelli's maps. The map is further embellished by two elaborate decorative cartouches and many vignettes of indigenous peoples, villages, hunting, animals, etc, including depictions of the nomadic tribes extending north from the Caspian Sea to east of the Gulf of Nova Zembla and the Cosack warriors in the southeast part of the map.
