Simon Wainwright
Haverhill/Bradford, MA: [ 1690 (328 Year Old ) AMERICAN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT; HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS FOUNDER; CAPT SIMON WAINWRIGHT; QUEEN ANNE'S WAR; COLONIAL 17TH CENTURY AMERICAN GENEALOGY]. This 17th Century American document is a rarely seen commodity on the open market, yet alone with ties to the early Indian raids and conflicts that surmised the late 1690s through 1710s in New England. SCARCE American 17th century legal document was written by Capt Simon Wainwright (1660-1708) teacher, merchant, early frontier Indian fighter, Justice of the Peace, militia captain, and assessor of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Wainwright himself was killed in the surprise "Raid on Haverhill" in 1708 by the French and their Indian mercenaries, known at the time as Queen Anne's War. During this military engagement, the frontier town of Haverhill was raided by a war party of a couple hundred French, Algonquin and Abenaki Indian warriors during the surprise attack. The French were led by Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville, who was the same commanding officer during the earlier "Raid on Deerfield" in 1704. This land deed dated March 31st 1690, whereby Daniel & Hannah Russell sell Hannah's share or claim to her father's estate to Hannah's brother, Caleb Hopkinson of Bradford (MA). Bradford was a village and former Essex County town in Massachusetts that was annexed by the city of Haverhill (MA) in 1897. Written completely in Simon Wainwright's own hand, and signed by Wainwright along the bottom. Anything genuinely signed by Wainwright is extremely rare and would predate 1708; the settlement of H … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chez Jean Baptiste Coignard, Paris. [16]+272 pages. Duodecimo (5 1/4" x 3 1/4") bound in full later calf with blind-stamped ruled edges with red label to spine in gilt lettering. (Hill 1423. European American 690/104; Palau 248537; Sabin 67984) Second edition. Raveneau de Lussan (born 1663 in Paris) was a French buccaneer. He belonged to a noble but impoverished family, and embraced a military career at the age of 14. In 1679 he embarked for Santo Domingo in search of fortune, but was unsuccessful, and joined the buccaneers under Laurens de Graaf, sailing from Petit-Goâve, 22 November 1684. He soon left de Graaf at the head of a band of his own, and in 1685 pillaged the town of El Realejo. In 1686 his band took part in the capture of Grenada, and, not finding the booty they expected, set fire to the city. After this Lussan separated from the English pirates, but he joined them again for the purpose of attacking Guayaquil, which they took with much booty. Lussan and a part of his followers then sailed for Tehuantepec, which they captured, and went as far north as Acapulco. They returned to Mapala, a port north of El Realejo, and deliberated on the route they should take to reach the Antilles. It was agreed to march to Nueva Segovia, a town situated on the Coco River, which empties into the Atlantic. Of this expedition Voltaire said: "The retreat of the ten thousand will always be more celebrated, but is not to be compared to it." Lussan formed four companies, of seventy men each, and made them swear to observe the severest discipline. On 2 January 1688, after praying togethe … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CUNNINGHAM, Charles].
Cat. Nat. Mar. Mus. V, 1690; cf. Dougall, "The east coast mutinies: May-June 1797", in: The naval mutinies of 1797, pp. 147-160; for the author: Laughton & Lambert, "Cunningham, Sir Charles (1755-1834)", in: ODNB (online ed.). First edition of a rare and detailed account of the historic mutiny at the Nore (in the Thames Estuary) in 1797, involving several ships of the Royal Navy. The errata slip notes, "A few copies only of this narrative are printed for the particular friends of the author." The revolt closely followed a more peaceful mutiny at Spithead earlier that year and ended with the conviction and subsequent executions of 29 leaders. The demands of the mutineers included more shore leave, a more equal distribution of prize money and several changes to the Articles of War. The Admiralty, however, didn't accede to the demands and the prime minister eventually outlawed the mutineers. Richard Parker, elected president of the delegates of the fleet, was court-martialed and hanged aboard the 90-gun Sandwich, the ship where the mutiny had started. Parker's trial was followed by the hanging of 28 other mutineers. The author, Charles Cunningham (1755-1834), was commander of the frigate Clyde. He was refitting at the Nore in May 1797 when the mutiny broke out. A respected captain, he managed to suppress the mutiny on his ship after 17 days. With the armorial bookplate of John Gretton, Stapleford, 1st Baron Gretton (1867- 1947), on the front paste-down, and an 1849 newspaper clipping about prize money for the officers and crew of 2 ships, tipped onto p. 24. 1690. What makes this lone volume of Poole's Synopsis unique is that it was given by Samuel Sewall to John Hale in 1690 - leading figures in Puritan Massachusetts who would, two years later, play vital roles in the Salem Witch Trials. Even more remarkable than John Hale's inscription to this effect, is that reference to the gift can be found in Sewall's diary. On a tortuous sea-voyage back from England, on Nov. 20, 1689, Sewall wrote in his diary: "If it should Please God, who is Righteous in all his Ways, and Holy in all his Works, to put an End to my Life before I come to Boston, my Desire is that the Rev. Mr. John Hale, of Beverly, have given him the Sett of Pool's Synopsis which I bought of Mrs. Mills, quarto 5 Volumes..." On March 19th earlier the same year, while in London, he had entered in his diary "To Mrs. Elizabeth Mills, for Pole's Synopsis entire, lacking nothing, will give £4. here." Whether Mrs. Mills' set is the one Sewall eventually gave to Hale is uncertain; in the event, Sewall survived the voyage and the gift did not take place until the following year, and Sewall's diary records his buying and gifting Poole's synopsis on several occasions. His remark about 'quarto' is certainly a mistake, as no 5-volume quarto edition was then extant. An interesting connection is that the author of the work, Matthew Poole, was a believer in witches, and provided a definition: "Any person that is in league with the devil, and by his help either doth any mischief, or discovers and practices things above the reach of other men or women... The word is of the feminine gender … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venezia. Bibliografia: Lago-Rossit, Descriptio Histriae, tav. XCIII, pp. 186-187. In 1690 Vincenzo Coronelli drew this two-sheets map depicting the coasts of Istria and Dalmatia. The map was published both as a single map and as a part of the Island Book of the Atlante Veneto which Coronelli published in Venice in 1696. This engraving depicts the administrative territory of the Adriatic coasts taken between Istria and Albania and it represents one of the first thematic maps about the organizational-administrative scheme of the area, when Dalmatia became part of the Venetian Republic. It is one of the most accurate early charts of the coastline of north Australia, with many places named along the Gulf of Carpentaria, including Cape Keerweer (where fresh water could be found) on the north coast, reached by Willem Janszoon in the Duyfken in 1606 when sent by the Dutch East India Company to search for new trade opportunities. The decorative title cartouche is surrounded by various people of the region, animals, birds, and a bounty of trade goods. For nearly a century, the Visscher family of cartographers were important mapmakers and mapsellers in Amsterdam.. Price: Euro 1.450,-.

CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718) and Jean-Nicolas de TRALAGE (c.1640-1699)
Paris: Jean-Baptiste Nolin, 1690. Copper-engraved map, with full contemporary color in many parts, outline color in others. Sheet size: 20 x 25 1/4 inches. Several expertly repaired tears. A very beautiful and finely engraved world map, principally devised by one of the period's greatest cartographers This very fine map is the result of the synergy of the talents of Coronelli and his French colleague Tralage, popularly known as the Sieur de Tillemont. It principally depicts the world in a bi-hemispheric projection, and largely follows the geography represented on Coronelli's celebrated globe of 1688. California is shown to be an island, and in the enigmatic void that lies to the northwest is the 'Strait of Anian' that supposedly formed the western terminus of a Northwest Passage. Beyond the strait, just to the northeast of Japan is the mysterious "Terre de Jessu," perhaps representing Hokkaido. Much further south, the loosely-defined area that is now known as New Guinea is labelled as the "Terre de Quir," noting on the map that it was discovered in 1606 by the Spanish explorer Ferdinand de Quir. The only major addition here to Coronelli's established geography is the appearance of the Solomon Islands. Surrounding these principal hemispheres are eight diverse hemispheric projections of the world, evincing a playful fascination with mathematics and perspective that anticipated the Enlightenment of the next century. Adorning the two upper corners of the map are a pair of hemispheres capturing the world from an oblique perspective, one centered on Paris, and the ot … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern half-vellum with marbled panels. Folio. - Title-page repaired; modern endpapers, piece from errata's lower-margin missing; new endpapers; minimal foxing / spotting; minimally waterstained affecting (only) the outer-margins.* Second (!!) edition (unfortunately with the title-page, dedication & privilege of the first edition of 1690), with the addition of six plates, of van der Heyden's book on firehoses in Amsterdam in the 17th century Dutch Republic. The Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, Jan van der Heyden (1637 - 1712), landscape painter and inventor, and his son Nicholaas took firefighting to its next step with the fashioning of the first fire hose in 1673. The fine plates (plate 7 is atributed to Romeyn de Hooghe, cf. Becker p. 385), for the greater part depicting notable fires in and around Amsterdam, clearly point out the advantages of the advantages of the new hoses and adjusted fire engines and are actually 'advertisements'for Van der Heyden's invention. -- Still a good copy of the second edition of this important book on fire fighting. # NNBW III, 584-6; Wurzbach I, 685-7; AvSt., 2832 (1e dr.); Muller, 2301, nos 1-25; Grease III, 230-1; Hollstein, nos 1-19; Sutton, Jan van der Heyden 1637-1712 (2006) p. 78.

A small nick in leather in middle of front hinge. Fronthinge weakening, but still holding. Engraved portrait. (24),550,(14) pp. and 19 engraved anatomical plates. A few brownspots. Last leaf and errata-leaf repaired in right margin, no loss of letters. ¶ Scarce first edition of this surgical textbook that opened a new era in which French surgical teaching dominated Europe."A native of Paris, Dionis studied surgery at the Confraternity of St. Côme and was first surgeon to Queen Maria Theresa until her death in 1684. When Louis XIV established a demonstratorship in operative surgery at the Jardin Royal in the early 1670s, he appointed Dionis to the position. Dionis remained there until 1680 when he returned to serve as surgeon to the entire royal house. The present work was first published in French in 1690 and soon became a standard work and popular textbook on the subject. It remained in print for over half a century and was even translated into Chinese. The illustrations, limited in number, are rather unimpressive copperplates."
