HUYGENS (Christiaan)
"His point of view was t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. English. Authorized (i.e., King James version). 1690.
Printed by Charles Bill & Thomas Newcomb. [also bound in at rear] Bible. O.T. Psalms. English. Paraphrases. 1693. Sternhold & Hopkins. The whole book of psalms. Collected into English metre. London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1693. 8vo. 87, [1] p. A handsomely bound late 17th-century printing of the King James Bible, this begins with an engraved title-leaf featuring the title within an architectural frame; the text of the Bible is printed on thin paper in double-column format. => The entire volume has been ruled by hand in red. The title-page of the New Testament is dated 1694 and bears the imprint "Printed by Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd," and the signing of the signatures is absolutely continuous from the O.T. -- that is the last leaf of the O.T. is Iii6 and the title-leaf of the N.T. is Iiii7. Curiously, on the engraved main title-page the date area shows erasure of a date that might have been 1692 or 1682 in roman numerals. It is possible that the 1690 date in roman is in excellent pen and ink facsimile. Binding: Contemporary black goat with a complicated and beautiful overall pattern of gilt tooling using acorn, star, and flower devices, a leaf-vine roll, a double- and a triple-fillet, hashed triangles, and a few other tools. The tall slim central panel is accented at all corners with heart forms, these revealed by three survivors on the back cover to have been => red leather onlays. Spine also elaborately gilt-tooled with some of the same tools reappearing and with two compartments incorporating capital letters har … [Click Below for Full Description]

PHARMACIE]
1690. or, The Great cordial elixir for the stomach. S.l. [Londres], s.d. [XVIIIe siècle], petit in-folio (29 x 23 cm), en feuille, bords ébarbés. 2 pp.n.ch. Au verso, on trouvera, sur 4 colonnes, l'impressionnante liste des dépositaires anglais de la boisson miracle : "It is sold in most of the chief cities and great towns in Europe ."

Nice example of Coronelli's two sheet map of Russia, extending from the Baltic and the Black Sea in the west to Gran Tartaria in the East. Coronelli's map of Russia is one of the most detailed and elaborate maps of the 17th Century, providing tremendous detail in the fine exacting style which characterizes Coronelli's maps. The map is further embellished by two elaborate decorative cartouches and many vignettes of indigenous peoples, villages, hunting, animals, etc, including depictions of the nomadic tribes extending north from the Caspian Sea to east of the Gulf of Nova Zembla and the Cosack warriors in the southeast part of the map. 661 1000mm

[FORTIFICATION MANUSCRIPT].
An anonymous French course on fortification probably written around 1690, with dozens of fortification plans, diagrams and other drawings, about 38 full-page (mostly on the inserted leaves) and many smaller ones on the text leaves. It is a book of practical instruction, complete with problems for the student to solve, and follows the methods of three of the greatest French military engineers of the 17th century: Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) and Nicolas-François Blondel (1618-1686). There is a distinct break between the part based on Vauban and Mallet and the part based on Blondel, so they can best be treated as separate parts, though the page numbering continues after a brief interruption. With a ca. 1900 letterpress label on the front paste-down from the library of Loxwood House, Billingshurst, Sussex, England, the estate of the family of John King (1770/71-1844). With an occasional drawing slightly shaved by the binder, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is rubbed, with some scratches and gouges, but structurally sound and most of the tooling still clear. An extensively illustrated anonymous French treatise on fortification from ca. 1690.

[Click Below for Full Description]

LA QUINTINYE, (Jean-Baptiste de)
Paris: Claude Barbin 1690. First edition of what must be regarded as the most influential book in the history of pomology. Although trained as a lawyer, a visit to the gardens of Italy in 1656 while serving as tutor to the son of Jean Tombonneau produced in La Quinitinie an interest in horticulture which he pursued upon his return to France. His genius was readily recognized by a series of wealthy employers, including the Prince de Condé at Chantilly and Colbert at Sceaux. He also worked alongside Le Notre in creating the jardin potager for Fouquet at Vaux-le-Vicomte, and when the envious Louis XIV put Fouquet in jail and seized Vaux for himself, La Quintinie was sent with Le Notre to Versailles. After first taking charge of the old fruit and vegetable gardens there he designed and oversaw the construction of the new Potager du Roi between 1677 and 1683. It survives very much intact to this day. La Quintinie traveled to Italy and England to study the state of horticulture in those countries. In England he visited Evelyn and reputedly refused an offer from Charles II to take charge of the royal gardens there. La Quintinie was particularly famous for producing fruits and vegetables out of season. He conducted numerous experiments toward this end and did much to perfect the art of forcing. His INSTRUCTION POUR LES JARDINS FRUITIERS ET POTAGERS offers an instructive treatise based on the results of these experiments and discoveries. He made extensive use of espalier planting at Versailles, a new technique introduced to him by Arnauld D'Andilly. His careful observations on this … [Click Below for Full Description]
