Text almost loose in binding, but holding, minor foxing, fore-edge margin of one leaf repaired. Overall, a good plus copy of a truly rare book. This is the first work of Catholic liturgy and ritual written and printed in the Tarascan language. It is from the pen of Juan Martinez Araujo, a secular priest who was an ecclesiastical visitor "in the mountains of the TIERRA CALIENTE of [Michoacan], and for thirty years a priest in Punguarehuato and the parish of Archangel S. Miguel de Tlazazalca." The rarity of this work has been noted for more than a century: LeClerc, writing in 1870, called it "extremement rare," and Sabin wrote, "not mentioned in Brunet, Rich, Brockhaus, or Stevens." In the twentieth century, Maggs Brothers, in their legendary series of catalogues, BIBLIOTHECA AMERICANA, failed to list a copy in any of the nine volumes of rarities for sale. Tarascan is the principal native language of the Mexican province of Michoacan, in the western region of the country. Father Gilberti's ARTE (Mexico, 1558) was the first book printed in Tarascan; between the publication of that work and this there followed a handful (i.e. fewer than a dozen) of other books in Tarascan. They were grammars, dictionaries, and doctrinal works, this being the first liturgical work printed for the Indians and their missionaries. The volume contains all of the sacraments from baptism to extreme unction, various blessings, words and acts of comfort for the sick and dying, an explanation of the Bull of the Holy Crusade, a confessionary, the act of exorcism of the bewitched, notes on extirpation of superstitions and idolatries, and a closing advisory on superstitions.       Artist: Cantelli da Vignola Giacomo (d) ; issued in: Modena; date: (d)1690 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 43 x 57; - description: Map shows the Provence; - vita of the artist: Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643 - 1695) was an important Italian cartographer and engraver Cantelli was born in Montorsello, near Vignola Italy to a prominent local family. After studying literature at the University of Bologna, Cantelli took a position as secretary to the Marquis Obizzi de Ferrara. Eventually Cantelli relocated to Venice where developed an interest in cartography. He later traveled to Paris in the company of the French ambassador where became acquainted with the French cartographer Guillaume Sanson, as well as his contemporaries Jacques-Andre Duval and Michel-Antoin Baudrand. It was most likely the influence of these innovative French cartographers that inspired Cantelli's careful and meticulous approach, in which he based his cartography not just on earlier maps, but also very much in the French style upon accounts written by travelers and merchants regarding actual travel to foreign lands. Back in Italy, Cantelli took service Count Rinieri Marescotti, with whom he traveled extensively throughout Italy, becoming in the process acquainted with the Italian publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. It is with Rossi that Cantelli began officially publishing his maps. The earliest maps to bear the Cantelli-Rossi imprint date to 1672 and detail the Holy Land, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. Around 1680 the duo also began to publish the Mercurio Geografico, a large format atlas illustrating all parts of the world in a splendid Italian baroque detail defined by elaborate finely engraved cartouche work, high quality paper, and bold Roman lettering, and dark rich inks. Some have compared his style go that of Giovanni Antonio Magini, another Italian cartographer of the previous generation. Cantelli da Vignola in fact pioneered the Italian style of fine bold engraving that would eventually be embraced and expanded upon by Vincenzo Coronelli. His work drew the attention of Pope Innocent XI and Reggio Francesco II d'Este, the Duke of Modena, both of whom offered him a position as court geographer. Cantelli chose to work with the Due of Modena, in the service of whom he produced numerous maps and well as two large globes.

Dutch church book in the French language containing the Geneva version of the New Testament, followed by the Psalms -with musical notation- of Clement Marot en Theodorus Beza, and the Forms. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with silver double clasp and 4 hinges. The clasps have straight catches but both the hasps and joints on the spine have an identically cut out pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity. -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century was covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive.       Amsterdam: Justus Danckerts [circa ]. 1690 - Copper engraving with original colour in outline (Very Good, slightly age-toned, white margins slightly dusty and stained with small repaired tears, some pin-size holes in the white margins in the folds, in the upper right corner marked with a number), 46 x 52 cm (18.1 x 20.5 inches). This attractive map was produced during the era of the Great Turkish War (1683-1699), an epic contest between Turkey and the Austrian Habsburg Empire for domination of South Central Europe. It shows Hungary and embraces the area between Vienna in Austria, Ptuj in Slovenia, Slavonia in Croatia, Belgrade in Serbia, Romania nad Slovakia. Danckerts’s issue of the map was perfectly timed to coincide with the Great Turkish War (1683 - 1699), one of the turning points in European history. In essence, this lengthy conflict hailed the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire at the lands of the European Christian powers. That being said, the war commenced with a stunning scare for the Europeans. In 1683, an Ottoman army broke out of Hungary to besiege Vienna, the Habsburg capital. This sent shockwaves throughout Europe, and only the intervention of Poland’s King Jan Sobieski saved the city. In 1684, the region’s main Christian powers formed the Holy League, marking the first time that they had all joined forces to fight to Ottomans. The Turks were also caught off-guard by recent changes in European military tactics, as their massive armies had great difficulty contending the Austrians’ new and highly mobile artillery units. This quickly turned the tables, as the Allies inflicted a succession of crushing defeats upon the Ottomans. The Second Battle of Mohács (1687) restored virtually all of Hungary to the Habsburgs. The decisive showdown of the war occurred at the Battle of Zenta (1697) in Serbia, whereby an Allied force under Prince Eugene of Savoy crushed the main army of the Ottoman Sultan Mustafa II. The Ottomans sued for peace and the war was concluded by the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699). Austria gained all of Hungary, many areas in the Balkans and Transylvania. The war was highly consequential in that is signaled the progressive decline of the Ottoman Empire. However, it would not be long before war between the European-Turkish wars were to resume. The Danckerts Company of Mapmakers - Justus Danckerts (1635-1701) was the most prominent member of the Danckerts family, which for almost a century presided over one of the leading Dutch map houses. The firm was founded around 1633 by Cornelis Danckerts the Elder (1603-56), who is listed that in Amsterdam municipal records as a ‘Papeiere const en Caerten verkooper’. Following Cornelis the Elder’s death, the firm was taken over by his eldest son, Danker Danckerts, and from around 1660, from their shop on the Kalverstraat, they began producing composite atlases, featuring many original maps engraved on premises. From, 1666, the enterprise was led by Justus Danckerts, Danker’s younger brother. A great vacuum developed in the Dutch mapmaking industry upon the demise of the Blaeu firm in 1672 and the progressive decline of the family business of the late Jan Jansson. The Danckerts workshop moved aggressively to fill the void and, by 1680, along with the firm of Frederik de Wit, they had become the leading map publishers in the Netherlands. Over the next 30 years, the Danckerts firm’s maps and composite atlases were amongst the best selling cartographic products in the world, and were favoured for their tasteful design and clean engraving. In addition to atlas maps, the Danckerts company was also known for grand wall maps, all of which are today very rare. Following Justus’s death in 1701, the firm was lead by his son, Theodorus Danckerts (1663-1727), whereupon it enjoyed several more prosperous years. However, in the face of stiff competition from both Parisian mapmakers and the Mortier firm of Amsterdam, the Danckerts enterprise was downsized in 1713 and finally liquidated in 1727. Madagascar- officially the Republic of Madagascar , and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of East Africa. Madagascar was an important transoceanic trading hub connecting ports of the Indian Ocean in the early centuries following human settlement. The written history of Madagascar began with the Arabs, who established trading posts along the northwest coast by at least the 10th century. From about 1774 to 1824, Madagascar gained prominence among pirates and European traders, particularly those involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Many European sailors were shipwrecked on the coasts of the island, among them Robert Drury, whose journal is one of the few written depictions of life in southern Madagascar during the 18th century. The wealth generated by maritime trade spurred the rise of organized kingdoms on the island, some of which had grown quite powerful by the 17th century. Among these were the Betsimisaraka alliance of the eastern coast and the Sakalava chiefdoms of Menabe and Boina on the west coast. After publishing several general atlases himself he became the associate of Pierre Mariette, a publisher of prints.In 1647 Sanson accused the Jesuit Philippe Labbe of plagiarizing him in his Pharus Galliae Antiquae; in 1648 he lost his eldest son Nicolas, killed during the Fronde. Among the friends of his later years was the great Condé. He died in Paris on 7 July 1667. Two younger sons, Adrien (d. 1708) and Guillaume (d. 1703), succeeded him as geographers to the king.In 1692 Hubert Jaillot collected Sanson's maps in an Atlas nouveau.       1685-1690. . - . Zaragoza-Barcelona. . 1 Vol. . . Cuarto Menor. . . La historia de la prensa en España se inicia con las narraciones de los sucesos de la toma de Granada o de la conquista de América, a finales del s. XV. La popularización de la imprenta permite la mayor difusión de estas relaciones y el nacimiento del periodismo tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día. En el siglo XVII se asienta la figura del Cronista de la Corte, figura en la que destacaron nombres como Jerónimo de Barrionuevo, Andrés de Almansa o José Pellicer de Ossau. En ese mismo siglo aparecen los mercurios o gacetas, una especie de boletines que informaban de las novedades ocurridas en las ferias comerciales importantes o los puertos de mucho tráfico. En 1625 apareció en Sevilla Avisos de Italia, Flandes, Roma, Portugal y otras partes; en 1641 Jaume Romeu publicó una traducción de la Gazette Parisien que puede considerarse el primer periódico semanal aparecido en español. Por otra parte, interesado el Estado por la popularidad e influencia que tales gacetas iban adquiriendo en la sociedad, el valido de Carlos II de España, don Juan José de Austria, se preocupó también de hacerse publicidad editando gacetas. Éste vio en este recurso un medio para cimentar su posición y fomentar sus intereses, y con tal propósito contrató al flamenco Francisco Fabro Bremundán, primer gacetero español de nombre conocido, para escribir e imprimir la primera gaceta española en 1661, la Relación o gaceta de algunos casos particulares, así políticos como militares, sucedidos en la mayor parte del mundo, de periodicidad mensual, aunque en Zaragoza continuó como semanal en 1676. La muerte de Juan José de Austria y la revancha de sus enemigos interrumpió un tiempo la publicación. Se reanudó, sin embargo, con el título de Gaceta Ordinaria de Madrid, aunque Fabro tuvo ya un competidor: las Nuevas Ordinarias de Sebastián Armendáriz. En 1697, ya muerto Fabro, su periódico sigue editándose en la capital como Gaceta de Madrid, que ya ininterrumpidamente, con algún cambio ocasional de título, continúa hoy imprimiéndose como Boletín Oficial del Estado (B.O.E.). Por otra parte hay que destacar que la prensa en español no solamente se editaba en España. Así, no debe sorprender que el periódico judío más antiguo que se conoce sea la Gazeta de msterdam, publicada entre 1675 y 1690 en castellano para los hispano-portugueses que llegaban a los Países Bajos, aunque brillan en ella por su ausencia las noticias de interés judío. Estas Noticias Generales de Europa., editadas en Zaragoza y ocasionalmente en Barcelona, son la continuación de la publicación puesta en marcha por Fabro. En ella se daba cuenta de las noticias más relevantes del panorama europeo, llegadas a Zaragoza desde los dominios españoles en Flandes e Italia durante el reinado de Carlos II, El Hechizado, periodo en el que la descomposición del Imperio Español y su pérdida de importancia en el mapa político europeo ya era evidente y traería como consecuencia el fin de la época de los Austrias y la llegada al trono español de la dinastía francesa de los Borbones. La publicación tenía un formato estable de 4 páginas en tamaño cuarto, que contenían noticias breves de las diferentes cortes europeas. Su periodicidad era semanal, siempre que los correos procedentes de Europa lo permitieran. Afm. 42,2 x 53,5 cm.Na de brand die uitgeverij Blaeu in 1672 verwoestte, had Frederick de Wit een deel van de koperen platen uit de boedel van Blaeu overgenomen en gaf deze met kleine wijzigingen onder eigen naam uit. De kaart van Wageningen kwam niet voor in het Stedenboek van Blaeu en verscheen dus rond 1690 voor het eerst. De oplage van De Wit?s Stedenboek was vele malen kleiner dan die van Blaeu, dat maakt de plattegrond van Wageningen dus zeldzaam!Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) was graveur en kaart verkoper geboren in Gouda. Door zijn huwelijk met Maria van der Waag in 1661 verkreeg hij zijn burgerrecht voor Amsterdam waar hij sinds 1648 werkte. Hij werd daar een van de beroemdste kaartenmakers van de 2e helft van de 17e eeuw. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. Provenance: with collection mark: vE (in circle): (van Eeghen, Lugt 385) Etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Very good. Excellent impression. La stessa mano ha corretto la numerazione delle tavole nell'indice -l'estensore essendosi accorto che una delle carte relative ai Paesi Bassi è in realtà rilegata fuori posto-; ha numerato le mappe dalla 1 alla 50 conformemente alla numerazione da lui corretta nell'indice; infine ha integrato l'indice a stampa aggiungendo numero, titolo e data per le 12 mappe aggiuntive che non compaiono nell'indice a stampa, che si ferma alla carta 85. Titolo più corto del resto del volume nel margine esterno, fioriture sparse, lieve alone marginale alle ultime carte, ma ottima copia genuina. Importante raccolta di carte geografiche, curata dallo stampatore Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in collaborazione con il cartografo del Duca di Modena Giacomo Cantelli. La collaborazione tra i due, cominciata nel 1679, durò fino alla morte del Cantelli, avvenuta nel 1695. Le singole carte geografiche sono datate dal 1669 al 1690. A parte alcune mappe firmate dai cartografi francesi Michael Antoine Baudrand, Guillaume Sanson, Nicholas Sanson e Augustin Lubin, la gran parte delle carte è opera del Cantelli. Tra gli incisori figurano i nomi di Jean Lhuillier, Francesco Donia, Vincenzo Mariotti ed altri. Il Mercurio geografico ebbe grande successo e continuò ad essere pubblicato, anche dopo la morte del Cantelli, fino a Settecento inoltrato con l'aggiunta di una seconda parte e di numerose nuove carte. Ogni esemplare dell'opera differisce dall'altro in quanto a numero di tavole. Essendo queste state prodotte nel corso di diversi anni ed essendo anche vendute singolarmente, il possessore del volume aveva la possibilità di aggiungere a suo piacimento le ultime uscite, come testimonia perfettamente questo volume che presenta 12 tavole aggiuntive rispetto alle 85 indicate nell'indice.
