        Essay Concerning Humane Understanding

1690. First Edition . LOCKE, John. An Essay concerning Humane Understanding. In Four Books. London: Printed by Eliz. Holt, for Thomas Basset, 1690. Folio (8 by 13 inches), period-style full dark brown calf, morocco spine label, raised bands. $75,000.Rare first edition, first issue, of Locke's remarkable study of the nature of knowledge, a fundamental work in the history of Western thought. Locke's investigation was continued by David Hume and Immanuel Kant; John Stuart Mill considered Locke to be the founder of the analytic philosophy of mind. An excellent, wide-margined copy of Locke's most famous work, a touchstone of the Age of Enlightenment, with extensive marginalia in a neat early hand indicating that this copy was well-read.""Locke was the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe"" (PMM 164). Locke's conclusion—that while man can never attain a perfect and universal understanding of the world, he can gain sufficient knowledge to secure his own well being—became a touchstone for the Age of Enlightenment. With the Essay Locke initiated the criticism of human knowledge and further opened the discourse on free inquiry. ""The Essay Concerning Humane Understanding… was the first attempt on a great scale, and in the Baconian spirit, to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge"" (Fraser). ""Locke's philosophy has not only had a profound effect upon philosophical and political thought, but also laid the foundations of modern psychology, dominating the field until well into the 19th century"" (Norman). ""The importance of few philosophical books have been so quickly recognized as was the case with the present [Essay Concerning Humane Understanding]. It passed through many editions in English and has several times been translated"" (Pforzheimer). First issue, with ""printed by Eliz. Holt"" in the imprint on the title page (rather than ""sold by Edw. Mory""). ""Peter Nidditch has estimated about 900 copies were published, chiefly of the Holt issue. But it is possible there were as few as 500"" (Yolton, 69-70). PMM 164. Yolton 61A. Norman 1380. Wing L2738. Pforzheimer 599. Wither to Prior 527. Early owner signatures of R. Styleman on title page and Robert Dixon on front and rear free endpapers. Marginal ink notes in an early, neat, and legible hand on virtually every page of the first three (of four) books, indicating that this copy was very carefully read and studied.Text generally quite clean, period-style calf near-fine. An excellent wide-margined copy of this rarity.

Danzig, Johann Zacharias Stoll, 1690 [frontispiece dated 1687[bound with:] Annus climactericus sive rerum uranicarum observationum annus quadragesimus nonus.

Danzig, David Friedrich Rhetius for the author, 1685 1690 - Together 4 vols in one, folio (396 x 233 mm), Prodromus: [x] 142, with double-page engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of Hevelius, engraved headpiece of astronomical instruments, and engraved plate 'A*' at p 96; Catalogus: 143-350 [2], with engraving in text on p 347; Firmamentum: pp 21 [1], with double-page engraved frontispiece dated 1687, engraved head- and tailpiece, 54 double-page engraved plates, and 2 large folding engraved planispheres; Annus climactericus: pp [xii] 24; 196, with engraved device on half-title, astronomical woodcuts in text, and 7 engraved plates, one folding, labelled A-G; portrait and Firmamentum engraved title bound at front of vol, minor ink stain in margin of portrait, a very attractive, fresh copy in eighteenth-century German patterned boards.First edition of Hevelius's great star atlas, together with his Prodromus and Star Catalogue, as issued, and including the Annus Climactericus, normally found on its own. The Firmamentum Sobiescianum was the finest celestial atlas of its time and the culmination of Hevelius' astronomical observations and researches conducted at his private observatory in Gdansk, considered to be the best in Europe. 'From the more than six hundred new stars that Hevelius had observed, he had created a dozen new constellations of which the "Shield of Sobieski" gave the work its title. Another of the new constellations, a grouping of very faint stars which Hevelius named "Lynx", was an expression of pride in his good eyesight - his "eyes of a Lynx". Still another bore the name of "Sextans" in honor of his large brass sextant of his own design. Most of the names of these new constellations of Hevelius are still used by astronomers' (Brigham Young Hevelius catalogue). Hevelius' star atlas was one of the few such actually produced by a professional working astronomer, as distinct from a map publisher or amateur populariser such as Piccolomini, Bayer, Cellarius, Doppelmayr, etc. It set the standard for celestrial cartography and was the source for the production of celestial globes, such as those by Einmart and Gerehard and Leonhard Valk. The star atlas contains 73 constellations, of which 12 were introduced here for the first time by Hevelius. The star maps were drawn by Andreas Stech and engraved by Charles de La Haye, though North has suggested that, based on Hevelius' known involvement in making the plates for his other works, he had a hand in these as well. The frontispiece of the Prodromus depicts the author, Ptolemy, Brahe, Ulugh Berg, the Landgrave of Hesse and Riccioli seated around a table with Uranus in the centre. 'The Prodromus contains the fundamental technology and methodology associated with the production of the Catalogus Stellarum' (ibid). 'The [latter] is a catalogue of 1,564 stars arranged alphabetically under constellation names and by stellar magnitude within constellations. Latitude, longitude, right ascension, and declination are given' (J.D. North in DSB). John Flamsteed reprinted this catalogue, differently arranged, as volume three of his Historia coelestis, 1725.The manuscript of the Catalogus, now at Brigham Young, was rescued from the Observatory fire in 1679. The complete work was published posthumously and with an introduction by Hevelius' widow Elisabeth. Hevelius died in 1687 while the Catalogus was still in press. A letter from Hevelius' assistant Christoph Colbe, two months after Hevelius' death, indicates that the Prodromus and the Firmamentum Sobiescianum had in fact already been printed. The present volume also contains the Annus Climactericus, the last treatise Hevelius published during his lifetime and a work rarely found bound with the Firmamentum Sobiescianum. A compilation of his observational data and scientific contributions between 1679 and 1685, the Annus Climactericus is essentially a continuation of his 1679 Machinae coelestis pars posterior, with the additional notes on his collaboration with the young Edmond Halley and the late

It was responsible for the nation's artillery, military engineering including fortifications, and supplies including ammunition. Though the Master of the Ordnance was usually a distinguished soldier, the Office reported to the Crown, not the Commander in Chief, and within the Civil Service grew to be second in size only to the Treasury. The Surveyor in particular had to see that fortifications were in order or to design new ones. At this time their chief was Frederick, 1st Duke of Schomberg, (Master, 18th April 1689, died 1st July 1690), who was campaigning in Ireland.

Bel exemplaire. *-------*. 2 volumes in-4. Collation : Demi-basane rouge à coins, dos à nerfs orné. (Reliure du XIXe.).

Views of the Dutch royal estate Soestdijk]. [Amsterdam], Hendrik de Leth, [ca. 1731]. Royal folio (55 x 34 cm). With large double-page general bird's-eye view of the Dutch royal estate Soestdijk (image size 35 x 47 cm) by B. Stoopendaal after B. Stuyvenburgh, and 16 numbered engraved views of details of the palace, gardens and other buildings (image size 12 x 16 cm) printed on 8 leaves. Modern half parchment.

      - The Anglo-Dutch Garden 24 (ca. 1690 state of general view only); Springer, p. 45 (without the general view); Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXVIII, B. Stoopendael 24 (ca. 1690 state of general view only); not in Berlin Kat. Very rare print series of the palace, gardens and other buildings of the Dutch royal estate Soestdijk, built mostly by Willem III, Prince of Orange, Dutch head of state and from 1689 also King of England. The estate passed to his son and then his grandson Willem Karel Hendrik Friso (1711-1751), Prince of Orange, who became the Dutch head of state in 1731 as Stadholder Willem IV. The large general view, with the city of Utrecht barely visible on the horizon, is rarely found with the series, but De Leth seems likely to have issued them together. Bastiaen Stoopendael (1637-1693) engraved and published the general view soon after Willem was crowned King William III of England in 1689. Hendrik de Leth (1703-1766) and his father Andries published views of Diemermeer by Stoopendael's son Daniel in 1725 and Hendrik seems likely to have added his name to the general view and published it together with the present numbered series soon after his father's death in 1731, perhaps for the occasion of Willem IV's appointment as Stadholder in that year. Well-printed with ample margins. The 16 views have been cut down, leaving a margin of about 2 mm, and mounted two to a leaf on 18th-century(?) unwatermarked laid paper. Very good copy of a very rare print series of King William III's Dutch royal palace and gardens.

The Council Book of the Corporation of Cork from 1609 tp 1643 and 1690 to 1800.

18.5 cm x 22.5 cm. XXX, 1191 pages. Original hardcover. Good condition with some clear signs of wear and tear on external cover and page edges, some stains on page edges and some marks on pages inside. Includes record of Mayors and Sheriffs of Cork from 1690 to 1734 / A charter to incorporate the Guild of Wholesale Merchants / An account of how the Earl of Inchiquin was presented with his freedom / The appointment of Sir James Jeffryes as Governor of Cork / Proposal for Benj Pike to prove his right to the fishery of the river. "Richard Caulfield's The Council Book of the Corporation of Cork from 1609 to 1643 and from 1690 to 1800 are proceedings of the municipal authorities of Cork as they took place. Caulfield's work is an attempt to provide a faithful record of history rather than a romantic version. He identified two methods of writing history. The first is to present the facts as they are and leave it to the reader to form his own impressions. The second is to present what the impressions have made on the writer's mind and present them to the reader. Caulfield intended to marry both methods together by presenting a series of samples and extracts to give a truer picture of the times. He used sources in the Library of the British Museum , the Bodlein library, Oxford , the Treasury of the Corporation of Cork and other sources. Richard Caulfield (1823-1887) was secretary, librarian and custodian of the Royal Cork Institution and librarian for Queen's College Cork. It is said of him that on several occasion he was chosen to referee the various sides in significant historical and theological disputes. He was acquainted with and respected by the members of the clergy, Cork city dignitaries, lecturers, professors and the student body of Queen's College who attended his funeral when he died at the age of 64."         An Act for the Naturalisation of Peter Reneu and Others. A contemporary manuscript copy made by a parliamentary clerk.

[c.1677] Large vellum document; some dusting but in good condition, folded. This Act undated, but the House of Lords Journal records that is was read before Parliament and agreed to on 12th April 1677. (The Addition of Names added by the House of Commons to the Bill for Naturalization of Peter Renue and others, was read Twice, and Agreed to.) 65 x 29cm.The Hollow Blade Sword Company was founded by Sir Stephen Evance, a goldsmith. In 1691 war between France and England interrupted the importation of hollow ground rapiers from France which had become popular weapons in England and a business opportunity presented to manufacture the swords in England. Evance arranged for Huguenot metalworkers to move to Britain to manufacture the swords and obtained a charter of corporation as the 'Governor and Company for Making Hollow Sword Blades in England', granted 13 October 1691. The company obtained premises at Shotley Bridge in Durham. Granting of the charter plus two patents was on condition the applicants loaned the government £50,000, which sum was provided by Evance and Sir Francis Child in August 1692. Evance was appointed the first governor of the company, Peter Reneu the deputy governor, assistants Francis Tissen, Matthew Evans, John Carter, John Holland, Abraham Dashwood, John Samford, Robert Peter, Thomas Evans, Peter Justice, John Reneu, William Reneu, John Baker. The corporation had power to purchase land and issue stock to unlimited value. The company manufactured swords and by virtue of the charter had power to seize imported foreign hollow swords. Evance became an excise commissioner and succeeded Childs as jeweller to King William III. However, after the king's death in 1702, the business failed and Evance committed suicide. It was purchased by a syndicate of businessmen who used the corporate identity of the company to operate as a bank. At this time the Bank of England held a monopoly by act of parliament as the only organisation permitted to operate as a bank, so anyone wishing to carry out banking operations had to do so by devious means. The company was used as a stepping stone to the foundation of the South Sea Company which set out to supplant the Bank of England as banker to the government. The new deputy-governor Jacob Sawbridge and his directors were described by Daniel Defoe 'as a complete triumvirate of thieving'.

Landwehr, Emblem and Fables Books Printed in the Low Countries, F071. *****. In-12. Fine example of Coronelli's map of the provinces of x, from Coronelli's rare Isolario (with text on the back), one of the most decorative and ornate of the 17th Century. Shows Southeast China, between Hainan and Formosa (Taiwan), centered on the Pearl River Delta, showing Macao (but pre-dating the first appearance of Hong Kong), and the northern part of the island of Luzon. In the South China Seas, Coronelli illustrates five various junks and Chinese galleys. The map is further embellished with a large martial title cartouche with a Chinese wind-head.         Scenes from History

      - N.d., circa 1690. Folio, 36.5 by 23 cm. 47 leaves (printing only on rectos), with a total of 422 copper engraved vignettes -- 420 are a more or less standard smaller size, with some differentiation in their shape, and two are somewhat larger. The scenes are from the Bible, Classical history (Rome and Greece) and carry forward to the sixteenth century. Among the then more modern history was the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, Columbus' discovery, the ascension of Henry IV in France, the abdication of Queen Christina of Sweden in 1654, and the repulse of the Turks at the Gates of Vienna in 1683. The vignettes are highly detailed in the fine Baroque style of the period. There is no indication of where the collection of illustrations was printed, but we would conjecture in Amsterdam, given the heterodox nature of the scenes depicted, etc. The collection is complete, but the plates are not bound entirely in the correct order, as may not be surprising. There is no title page, but there are four pages which summarize the illustrations, and each vignette also has a caption. The vignettes may often have been cut from these sheets to serve as cards or paste-ons.

        An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding

London: by Eliz. Holt, for Thomas Basset, 1690. First edition. Elizabeth Holt imprint, the first issue according to Yolton 61A; PMM 164; Pforzheimer 599. (Current scholarship is mixed as to priority between this and the Basset imprint). Folio (pages: 313 x 190 mm), collates complete: A4; (a)2; B-Ccc4; 198 leaves (misnumbered at 76, 77, 287, 296 and 303). With the two emendations (in Locke's hand?) on leaves A(3) and A(4). (Yolton 61A.) Bound in full contemporary calf, rebacked (and recornered) with the original spine laid down. Title page with a small previous owner's name removed and professionally repaired, but with some staining around the area. Second leaf with some offsetting in the same place. Two other leaves Ccc2 and Ccc3 with upper margins restored, no text affected (just touching top rule). Otherwise an excellent set internally. Page block tight, with well-margined, crisp leaves, generally unblemished and unmarked. A monolith in the landscape of philosophical treatises, Locke was the first "to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe," and concludes that man has a means of controlling his own destiny and is thus not the pure victim of chance. PMM 164. He advanced the concept of people born "tabula rasa," and filled through their lives by experiences. This concept formed the basis for the empiricist camp in modern philosophy, later expanded by Hume and Berkeley. "An Essay" was placed on the Catholic Index in 1700 for its controversial content, where it remains to this day (see Height, "Banned Books," p. 27-8). From the collection of Michael Ernest Sadler, father of the famous collector and bibliographer Michael Sadleir. Grolier Club, "One Hundred Books famous in English Literature," 36.

This is really a masterpiece of engraving". 1690 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
