S.l.n.d. (Barcelona ?, 1689). - in-4. 55pp. Cartonnage moderne. [Click Below for Full Description]

(Carnations) (Anonymous) M., L. C. B.
Paris: Chez Charles de Sercy: , 1689. Paris: Chez Charles de Sercy 1689. An early manual on carnations and pinks addressed specifically to the amateur jardinier fleuriste at a period when the carnation was particularly in vogue. The first hundred pages deal with various aspects of cultivation - in pots, in greenhouses, and in the ground - while the remainder is devoted to an extensive listing of varieties. These entries describe each variety carefully and are full of observations on their particular qualities and special requirements, opinions as to their value and beauty, and occasional reference to the novelty or age of a particular variety. This work has been erroneously attributed to Goube, who wrote an eighteenth century work with a similar title. Its true author is unknown. Musset-Pathay 1379. 8vo (15.2 x 9 cm); (iv) + 164 pp. Contemporary vellum, small portion of one corner rear board worn away.

COENDERS VAN HELPEN, Barent, 1601-78). -
Groningen, Pieman, 1689.In - folio piccolo. Second issue of the first edition of a very rare work on alchemy. "The fact that the title leaf bears a different watermark from the rest of the book suggests that it is a cancelled leaf, the whole being simply a reissue of unsold sheets of the 1686 edition together with two leaves of errata. In other words this is not a new edition but the second issue of the first edition" (Mellon Coll. 142). With an engr. allegorical frontispiece, 13 engr. plates with allegorical illustrations, and 4 (of 5) engr. plates with geometrical figures. Some light browning and occasional foxing. Contemp. calf, quite worn but firm.

[LOCKE, John.]
London: for Awnsham Churchill,, 1689. Quarto (214 × 152 mm). A very good copy in recent calf-backed marbled boards, spine decorated and lettered gilt, to style, uncut edges just a little stained in places. Two short tears, one at foot of title, the other at head of last leaf, both neatly closed. Rare first edition in English of Locke's first separately published work, his Letter on Toleration, in which he distinguishes exactly the business of civil government from that of religion. The work was originally published in Latin in 1689, and is here translated by William Popple, a Unitarian merchant, "possibly with Locke's cooperation" (Yolton.) "In winter 1685?-6 Locke interrupted his labours on the Essay [on human understanding] to write another, shorter work. Louis XIV had revoked the edict of Nantes in October, removing the last remnants of toleration for the French protestants. The Epistola de tolerantia was written after Locke returned from Cleves about the beginning of November. It was addressed to Limborch, who kept the manuscript and subsequently arranged for it to be printed. The Latin text was published anonymously at Gouda in April 1689, two months after Locke had returned to England. The Epistola develops further the theory of toleration already put forward in the Essay Concerning Toleration of 1667 [written in 1667, but first published in 1876]. Locke advocated the complete separation of church and state: states exist only to preserve their members' civil goods; churches are purely voluntary societies which are allowed to exercise discipline over their members, but … [Click Below for Full Description]

The original book, published in 1549 (Church of England 1957), in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. Prayer books, unlike books of prayers, contain the words of structured (or liturgical) services of worship. The work of 1549 was the first prayer book to include the complete forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English. It contained Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion and also the occasional services in full: the orders … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Selden, Nathaniel Bacon, John Starkey [Admiral George Byng]
London: Printed for John Starkey, 1689 Book. Very Good. Leather Bound. 2nd Edition. [20] 203 [5] 168, 167-188 [6] Admiral George Byng's copy of John Selden's Laws and Government of England in the 1689 reissue of the 1682 edition. This edition has an additional title page and preliminary advertisement leaf. The ownership signature of George Byng, Viscount Torrington appears on the front pastedown with his 'Tuebor' armorial book plate and opposite his shelf mark. There are Victorian ownership signatures below relating to the Cary family. The binding is in handsome contemporary panelled calf with relaid spine, rubbing to the boards but sound. Internally the book is complete as called for with a couple of marks to the additional title page. Byng's ownership of this volume is particularly interesting in the light of his political role in delivering to William of Orange the support of the navy during the revolution of a year earlier. Indeed the edition of 1682 was suppressed until the change of regime was complete. R16514 Byng's fourth son, John Byng, who followed in his father's footsteps in the navy suffered the ignominy of court martial and execution. Eustache Le NOBLE
Original editions. Editions elzéviriennes the Sphere. Full period calf, spine tooled raised. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Tenelière, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 years, he died poor wh … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Cox
LONDON: Printed by H Clark, for Joseph Watts at the Angel is St Paul's Church-Yard, 1689 A fair copy of this scarce work, in contemporary full leather binding with 2 frontispieces and folding map; 2 parts bound in one. Written by Sir Richard Cox (1650-1733), an Irish lawyer and judge, who was Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1703-7, and Lord Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench for Ireland 1711-1714. His writing takes a very English (and politically expedient) view of Ireland: that Ireland was 'rescued' from barbarity by the English conquest. The binding preserves the contemporary panelled calf boards and there is a gilt stamped 'lion rampant with bend' armorial device to the front board and the entwined initials AV on the back board. The spine is newer with raised bands and a gilt title label. The boards have repaired corners and the whole binding is in good sound condition. The endpapers are new and with a little marking. Contents: endorsement; frontispiece of William and Mary; title page for 1869; dedication 5 pp; To the Reader 12 pp; An Apparatus or Introductory Discourse 28 pp; folding map; text 456 pp; Index 4 pp; errata; license; portrait of William and Mary; title page dated 1690 with red and black inks; Dedication 4 pp; To the Reader 18 pp; An Apparatus 15 pp; text James I pp 1-206; text Charles II pp 1-72 (pagination restarts 3 times in book 2); Letter to the Author pp 1-20; Appendices I-XLIX pp 1-211; Finis; Errata 1p; publisher's advert 1 p; Table of the 'most material passages' and table to the appendix 4 pp. The contents have some blotchy marking - particularly in boo … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAMES STUART
London: Printed for Simon Burgis, 1689. First edition, folio, (iv), 21, (1) pp. Folding map, outer margin of first two leaves cut close without loss to text, next leaf with soiling to the margin as a result, outer edge of final leaf laid down with some loss but again no loss of text, one paragraph on page 8 censored using type ornaments, modern booklabel of John Prebble, journalist and historian. 20th century quarter calf. A lively work published in support of the notion that James Stuart was illegitimate.
