COWLEY, ABRAHAM
London: Printed for Charles Harper, 1689. FIRST EDITION. From a distinguished collection, in extremely attractive condition, and in a fine contemporaneous binding, this is the first appearance of the botanical writings of one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley (1616-67) was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15 and went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. A staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen, Henrietta Maria, he helped encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters, including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point, Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death, Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey (noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England"), but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument, pictured in our frontispiece, refers to him as "the English Virgil," and Perkin asserts that his "fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. 297 x 192 mm. (11 5/8 x 7 1/2"). [20], 166 (148-9 misnumbered 140-1), [2] pp. FIRST EDITION. VERY PLEASING CON … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for, and sold by Richard Baldwin in the Old Baily. 1689 [6], 73, [1]pp, preliminary blank as required; small 4to. Titlepage has a few ink splashes otherwise a fine clean copy. Disbound.ESTC R22244; Wing H3783. The third edition of this famous treatise which was first published in 1643, and again in 1680. Hunton, 1604-1682, argued that sovereign power did not reside wholly with the monarch, but was in the hands of King, Lords and Commons jointly. If one of these bodies attempted to seize more than its fair share of power, the others could defend their rights by force if necessary. It provoked an attack by Robert Filmer in his Anarchy of a Limited and Mixed Monarchy, 1648.

BOHUN, Edmund]
Printed for Ric. Chiswell, London 1689 - [8], 168pp. With half-title. Bound by W. H. Woods of Manchester in nineteenth-century half-calf, marbled boards, lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed, with loss to head and foot of spine. Marbled endpapers, very slight loss to top corner of first four leaves, else internally clean and crisp. Edmund Bohun (1645-1699), writer, press licenser, and Tory publicist. First printed in April of 1689, The history of the desertion provides one of the earliest narratives of the Glorious Revolution and the abandonment of the throne by James II. Bohun, a born Dissenter, would be alienated by his Jacobite companions for his perceived acceptance of William of Orange as monarch; a view exacerbated by the inclusion of a reprint of Bohun's reproach of Desertion discuss'd (1689), Jeremy Collier's pamphlet advancing the arguments of the supporters of James II. Later, falling out of favour with the Wilhelmite monarchy after a brief stint as press licenser, Bohun reemerged as the chief-justice of South Carolina in 1698, where he died from a fever a year later. (PRINTED BOOK OF HOURS)
Pariggi [Paris]: Stefano Loyson, 1689. This charming little Office of the Virgin in Italian was the pious accessory for a succession of royal ladies, beginning with the mother of Louis XV and descending through the daughter and granddaughter of Louis XVI to writer and collector Morel de Campannelle and to Sophie Morel d'Arleux. The binding is quite feminine, and must have been jewel-like when the colors were new and bright. It shows very little wear, and was clearly treasured as an object of beauty rather than used as a tool of devotion.. 108 x 68 mm. (4 1/4 x 2 3/4"). 9 p.l., 26, 276 pp., [2] leaves. Translated by M. Angelo Pronetti. Very pretty contemporary white kidskin, lavishly gilt and painted, covers with elaborate frame and centerpiece stamped in gold and highlighted with green, red, blue, and brown paint, raised bands, spine compartments gilt with small floral tools at center and corners, gilt titling, turn-ins with gilt floral roll, light blue watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Front flyleaf with a list of past owners, beginning with Marie-Adelaide de Savoie, mother of Louis XV, penned in an elegant 19th century hand; note on provenance in the hand of former owner Morel de Campennelle laid in at front. A little wear to joints and extremities, spine a bit abraded, paint rubbed or faded in spots (especially on backstrip), isolated small rust spots or faint foxing, otherwise an excellent specimen, the text quite clean and fresh, and in a sound, generally well-preserved binding with gilt that is still bright. Illusione e Pratica Teatrale 31. "[Cavalli] was the most performed, and perhaps the most representative, composer of opera in the quarter-century after Monteverdi and was a leading figure, as both composer and performer, in Venetian musical life." Thomas Walker and Irene Alm in Grove Music Online. L'Hipermestra, with text by Giovanni Andrea Moniglia (ca. 1630-1700) and sets by Ferdinando Tacca (1619-1689), was first performed in Florence in 1658. The libretto, with plates by Alli in large format, was published in that same year. The present plate is from the reissue of 1689, re-engraved and published in slightly smaller format. Sonneck p. 595. Moniglia (1624-1700) "must be reckoned among the most original librettists of the 17th century... His Hipermestra (1658, music by Cavalli) and Ercole in Tebe (1661, music by Melani) set a standard for the festa teatrale." Robert Lamar Weaver in Grove Music Online. S.l.n.d. (Barcelona ?, 1689). - in-4. 55pp. Cartonnage moderne. [Click Below for Full Description]

Lapide, Cornelius Cornelii a
Apud Viduam & Haeredes Hieronymi Verdussen, 1689. Apud Viduam & Haeredes Hieronymi Verdussen. LEATHER BOUND. B00LHTUPQ2 In Latin. 1689 Apud Viduam & Haeredes Hieronymi Verdussen (Antwerp, Belgium), 8 7/8 x 13 3/4 inches tall x 4 inches thick full leather bound, six raised bands and title labels to spine, engraved main title page, sumptuous full-page engravings and separate title pages for Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel (all dated 1688), [40], 1414, [90] pp. Covers rubbed and edgeworn, especially at top spine cap. Scraping and peeling of leather to both covers. Page edges stained and soiled. Lower spine label cracked, with about a third of the label lacking. Some age toning to paper, which nevertheless remains quite supple and easy to read. In all other respects, a very good copy, unusually well preserved - clean, unmarked and solidly bound - of an important set of commentaries on the Major Prophets section of the Christian Old Testament in the Bible - the Book of Isaiah, the Books of Jeremiah (Jeremiah, Lamentations and Baruch), the Book of Ezekiel and the Book of Daniel - by Cornelius Cornelii a Lapide (1567-1637), a Flemish Jesuit and exegete. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~YYY~ All these commentaries are on a very large scale. They explain not only the literal, but also the allegorical, tropological, and anagogical sense of the sacred text, and furnish a large number of quotations from the Church Fathers and the later interpreters of Holy Writ during the Middle Ages. A tear to bottom of spine, some foxing to page edges, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Bookplate to pastedown. Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de Brantôme (c.?1540 – 15 July 1614), also known as the abbé de Brantôme, was a French historian, soldier, and biographer. De Bourdeille was born in Périgord, Aquitaine, the third son of the baron de Bourdeille. His mother and maternal grandmother were both attached to the court of Marguerite of Navarre, on whose death in 1549 he went to Paris, and later (1555) to Poitiers, to finish his education. He was given several benefices, the most important of which was the abbey of Brantôme, but had no inclination for an ecclesiastical career. He became a soldier and came into contact with many of the great leaders of the continental wars. He travelled in Italy; in Scotland, where he accompanied Mary, Queen of Scots (then the widow of Francis II of France); in England, where he saw Elizabeth I (1561, 1579); in Morocco (1564); and in Spain and Portugal. De Bourdeille fought on the galleys of the Order of Malta, and accompanied his great friend, the French commander Filippo di Piero Strozzi (grandson of Filippo Strozzi the Younger), in his expedition against Terc … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Acts & Ordinances: Bread]
[Angers], 1689. Broadside, (). First edition. This royal proclamation regulates the prices bakers can charge for different varieties of bread in Angers in proportion to the cost of wheat and rye, perhaps as a result of the economic pressures of the beginning of the Nine YearsÕ War. It was significantly enhanced by Alexander William Crawford Lindsay (1812-1880), 25th Earl of Crawford & 8th Earl of Balcarres and his son James Ludovic Lindsay, the 26th Earl of Crawford, with the number of books eventually reaching almost 200,000 volumes. While significant portions of the collection were incorporated into the John Rylands Library, pieces were sold off over the years (see "The Bibliotheca Lindesiana" in The Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, 1946). Le scene si riferiscono a cerimonie che venivano celebrate nel corso dell'anno giubilare.
