Eustache Le NOBLE
Elzevir. first editions. Editions elzéviriennes the Sphere. Full contemporary calf, spine tooled raised. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Tenelière, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 years, he … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVALLI, Pier Francesco 1602-1676
Firenze: Vincenzo Vangelisti, 1689. 182 x 238 mm.margins. Printed on laid paper. The scene depicts a courtyard enclosed by columns and arches. A female singer in the foreground and a group of six soldiers (possibly the chorus) is in the background. Slightly worn; some minor foxing' central vertical crease; remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso. "[Cavalli] was the most performed, and perhaps the most representative, composer of opera in the quarter-century after Monteverdi and was a leading figure, as both composer and performer, in Venetian musical life." Thomas Walker and Irene Alm in Grove Music Online. L'Hipermestra, with text by Giovanni Andrea Moniglia (ca. 1630-1700) and sets by Ferdinando Tacca (1619-1689), was first performed in Florence in 1658. The libretto, with plates by Alli in large format, was published in that same year. The present plate is from the reissue of 1689, re-engraved and published in slightly smaller format. Sonneck p. 595. Moniglia (1624-1700) "must be reckoned among the most original librettists of the 17th century... His Hipermestra (1658, music by Cavalli) and Ercole in Tebe (1661, music by Melani) set a standard for the festa teatrale." Robert Lamar Weaver in Grove Music Online. Tacca (1619-1686) was an Italian architect and stage designer. "As well as designing buildings, such as the Teatro dell'Accademia degli Immobili (later della Pergola), built in Florence in 1656, he devised scenery, machines and apparatus for various performances and dynastic ceremonies, which are partly documented in engravings... S.l.n.d. (Barcelona ?, 1689). - in-4. 55pp. Cartonnage moderne. [Click Below for Full Description]

Short title in ink on the back. Frontispiece, engraved by P. Philip. The copper plate for this frontispiece, and for the other plates in this book were used previously for an edition of 'De triclinio', that was published in Amsterdam in 1664 by Andreas Frisius. Title in red and black. 7 (of which 5 folding) plates, 14 plates & illustrations (of which 12 full-page) in the text. They depict banquet scenes on archaeological objects, and artist's impressions of banquets, among which the last supper of Christ) (Condition: 2 small defects to spine; right margin of first leaves thumbed; right lower corner of last 10 leaves slightly waterstained) (Note: A triclinium 'a couch running round three sides of a table for reclining on at meals, an eating-couch, table-couch', it can also indicate 'a dining-room'. (Lewis & Short) The Spaniard priest Pedro Chacón, or in Latin Petrus Ciacconius, born in Toledo in 1525, treats in his book 'De triclinio' more than couches. It also is on the meals of the Romans, table manners, dishes, drinks, especially wine, symposia, music etc. It is at the same time the best known title of Chacon.
1689. Engraved map on two sheets joined, 48 engraved views pasted to upper and lower border, text to left and right border, slight loss to text. Large engraved plan of the Rhine and the surrounding countryside from its mouth to Basel. Surrounding the map are 48 bird's-eye views of towns and cities within the Rhineland and its environs, together with two columns of text to the left and right margins, providing information upon the towns and cities. The work was produced during the early years of the War of the Grand Alliance, fought between Louis XIV and a European coalition trying to quash his territorial ambitions. It marks the moment when Louis's army crossed the Rhine as a prelude to invading Philippsburg, the key post between Luxembourg (annexed in 1684) and Strasbourg (seized in 1681), and other Rhineland towns. This pre-emptive strike was intended to intimidate the German states into accepting his conditions, set out in his 'Mémoire de raisons', while encouraging the Ottoman Turks to continue their own struggle with the Emperor in the east. The action was initially successful: Louis took control of the Rhineland from south of Mainz to the Swiss border. However, rather than capitulating, his actions galvanised the League of Augsburg into action. Louis soon … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques Marsollier
Lyon: Daniel Hortemels, 1689. 12mo (14,4 x 8,7 cm). (64), 408 pp. Contemporary mottled calf. Spine with 4 raised bands, 5 compartments with gilt decorations and one with a gilt morocco letterpiece. Against the church taxes. The dixmes (dimes = tithes) are one-tenth part (f.e. of the harvest) that were required to be paid in kind to the church. According to Barbier (Dict. Ouvr. Anon.) and the BNF, this work was written by the Gallican abbé Jacques Marsollier [1647-1724]. It is divided in four books. The first book treats the origin of the dixmes, and the benefices of the Church and the way that the Church has augmented them. In the second book the author treats the differences between the Popes and the worldly rulers regarding the right of investing and the right of the Ruler. The third book covers the ways that the Church of Rome has employed to gain benefices outside the diocese of Rome and the differences with the Church of England in this respect. In the fourth book Marsollier shows the development of the church benefices from the 15th century on. In this work Marsollier defends the prince's right to establish a single religion in his own state and to exclude others. He emphasizes that it is the right of the prince, and not to be imposed upon him by the pope. A rare work, we could trace only two copies in France, one in the British Library, one in Mannheim and four copies in Italy. Although there is also an edition published by Hortemels that is dated 1688 on the title page, that edition has the same Privilege du Roy as our copy: "Achevé d'imprimer le 25. Novembre 1688" … [Click Below for Full Description]

About 60 woodcut illus., many full-page & double-page, in the text. 32; 31; 37; 64; 54 folding leaves. Five vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rather rubbed with some wear), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Osaka: Itamiya Mohe Kaihan, 1689. First edition of "the first astronomical book published in Japan. Although all five volumes mention the study of mathematical astronomy, the first volume has circular star maps and the second has figures of the lunar lodges. Most of the stars are shown as black circles, but those of the lunar lodges and other notable stars in the circular star map are shown as white circles, as are the determinative stars in the figures of the lunar lodges."-Miyajima, "Japanese Celestial Cartography before the Meiji Period" in History of Cartography, Vol. 2, No. 2, p. 590. The present work is one of the finest illustrated science books published in Japan in the 17th century. The nine-sphere universe diagram in the first volume was reproduced from the Chinese edition of Matteo Ricci's A Profound Demonstration of the Two Spheres (1603). Volumes 2-4 are largely concerned with the reform of the Chinese lunisolar Hsuan-ming calendar, adapted in Japan in 862. It had become very inaccurate in predicting solar and lunar eclipses. In early Japan, knowledge of astronomy and the ability to predict eclipses were considered by the imperial court to be of the greatest importance and the need for calendar reform took a high priority. Iguchi (active 1689-98), was one of the first Japanese astronomers to grasp the superiority of Western astrono … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARRÊME (François-Bertrand).
A Paris, chez Denys Thierry, 1689. - in-12. Titre gravé. 1f. 204pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
