Bernard Randolph
London: William Notts, Thomas Basset and Thomas Bennet, 1689. Good for its age; some cracking of spine, page ends discoloured, moderate foxing, but not throughout, maps and fold-out illustrations untorn and clear. Randolph's famous record of his travels in the Peloponnese in the 1670's and 80's, including the Aegean Islands, Crete and Rhodes. His observations are precise and pragmatic; as a merchant, he was interested in commercial possibles and saw ports and facilities with a businessman's eye. He is less interested in antiquities than most travelers of his time, and provides interesting and rare observations of conditions in the area at the time and of contemporary life and relations among the Greeks and the Turks. This book belonged to (among others) Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers (1822-1859), has his bookplate, and in a period hand (most likely his) is written "The Lord ferrers (sic) his book.".

Calepinus, Ambrosius
typis Stephani Curtij, 1689. Folio, 2 parts in 1, pp. [8], 988; 156; first title page printed in red and black, both with printer's woodcut device, text in both double and triple column, woodcut initials and ornaments; contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, red morocco label in 1; some cracking at the top of the spine, the boards rather rubbed, but the binding is sound; bottom inch of title page neatly cut away (no loss of letterpress), . central lozenge stamped in blind on both covers, manuscript titling on spine; turn-ins curled, but a good, sound copy of a large and impressive volume. This famous and durable polyglot dictionary was first published as a Latin lexicon in Reggio in 1502, and was gradually augmented by a series of editors to include up to ten languages, including English. "During the whole period of the Renaissance scarcely an important dictionary was published which did not reflect directly or indirectly the influence of Calepine" (Starnes). Labarre 198.

Sprat, Thomas
Edward Jones, 1689. Large paper copy of the first edition in a binding seemingly meant for presentation, 4to (235 x 185 mm.), pp. [4], 64; title within double-ruled border; contemporary red turkey morocco, covers with elaborate paneling in gilt with fleurons at the corners and sides, unlettered gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, a.e.g.; binding a little rubbed, but still very good and sound. This is the second of two letters written by Sprat at the time of the Revolution, in which he attempts to justify his taking a seat of an ecclesiastical commission established in 1686 by James II. Sprat was not averse to James's declaration for liberty of conscience, but by the time James fled to France Sprat's sympathy for his monarch was awkward. This copy with the early armorial bookplate of the Duke of Beaufort (Henry Somerset): his sympathy for James makes him a logical recipient for Sprat's self-justifications. Wing S5049. Robert Gould
Poems Chiefly Consisting of Satyrs and Satyrical Epistles. By Robert Gould 1689 First edition. ESTC: R14024. (30), 65, (1), 66-66, (2), 66-66, (2), 67-310p. First and last blanks are missing. Rebound. Bound in half calf. Easton Neston Library label to the front pastedown. Robert Gould (1660-1709) was a poet. He started out as a servant and ended up as a schoolmaster. "In 1689 Gould published 'Poems', which contained, along with verse epistles and occasional poetry, the potent 'Satire Against Man'...Gould's satires, which were chiefly influenced by his friend John Oldham (1653-1683), comprise about one half of Gould's output and were his most important work. Their subjects range from love and marriage to religion and politics, and often anticipate the satirical writings of Swift. As well as contributing a valuable illustration of the period, Gould's poetry is vigorous and well written; it continues to languish in undeserved neglect." - ODNB. Condition: Very good. 1689.

Thomas Sprat
London: Edward Jones, 1689.

Robert Gould
R. Bentley, 1689. Condition: Good Plus. 16mo, (6.75" x 4.5") Half-calf over non-pareil marbled boards.Outer spine lacking but binding tight. Lacks pp. 27-30, which, according to the table of contents should be "Sylvia Perjured", but no pages appear cut out, perhaps rather neglected to originally be bound-in. The later -- probably 19th century rebinding resulted in some over-trimming of the top-of-page titles. Interior very, clean, but for some centuries-old inked signatures, including a signed name (Edey E?gar Smith??), followed by her flyleaf-rhyme warning, dated 1793, nearly a century after the book's publication: "Don't steal this book for fear of shame for year you see the oner name" -- most likely a schoolchild's rendition of a then-popular flyleaf rhyme found on a bible in Concord, Mass: "Steal Not this book / for Fear of Shame / for Here You See / the Owner['s] Name (Folklore and Book Culture, by Kevin J. Haynes). 310 pages. Title page pasted onto blank page. Boards show edgewear but very good. No Publisher stated [R.Bentley]. Stated "Printed and to be sold by most booksellers in London and Westminster." (Watson NCBEL 475). Robert Gould [ca. 1660-1709] was born in poverty, worked as a footman to the wealthy, and later, after achieving some success writing, worked as a schoolteacher. His early poetry was at least somewhat influenced by Juvenal, but when Gould published "Love Given Over..", his baldly misogynistic diatribe, he far surpassed the relatively tame Satirist whose style he at least drew upon. Gould used his writing to win his independence in the most literal … [Click Below for Full Description]
