(Carnations) (Anonymous) M., L. C. B.
Paris: Chez Charles de Sercy 1689. An early manual on carnations and pinks addressed specifically to the amateur jardinier fleuriste at a period when the carnation was particularly in vogue. The first hundred pages deal with various aspects of cultivation - in pots, in greenhouses, and in the ground - while the remainder is devoted to an extensive listing of varieties. These entries describe each variety carefully and are full of observations on their particular qualities and special requirements, opinions as to their value and beauty, and occasional reference to the novelty or age of a particular variety. This work has been erroneously attributed to Goube, who wrote an eighteenth century work with a similar title. Its true author is unknown. Musset-Pathay 1379. 8vo (15.2 x 9 cm); (iv) + 164 pp. Contemporary vellum, small portion of one corner rear board worn away. .

TACHARD, GUY, pere
Gilles Hortemels, 1689 2nd French ed. Re-bound in modern full calf with bands on spine and red label with gilt titling. NB, book looks as if it has been trimmed on the top margin but the size corresponds to the original. All edges gilt. A second embassy to Siam was sent in March 1687, in which Tachard again took part. The embassy consisted of five warships, led by General Desfarges, and was intent on bringing the Siamese embassy home. However, apart from the reaffirmation of the 1685 commercial treaty, the mission achieved little else. The disambarkment of French troops in Bangkok led to strong nationalistic movements in Siam which ultimately resulted in the 1688 Siamese revolution in which king Narai died, the ringleader was executed, and Phra Petratcha became king. In the later part of 1689, Desfarges captured the island of Phuket in an attempt to restore French control. Part of the book touches on the Cape of Good Hope, where the governor, Simon van der Stel and the visiting commissioner of the VOIC, H A van Rheede tot Drakenstein, entertained the French party and gave them a tour of the settlement, as well as helping them with their scientific and astronomical observations. For this the governor was reprimanded later, as France was at war with the Dutch.French text (iv) 402 [8] pp with vignettes and six folding plates

ORLEANS (Pierre Joseph d'),

[EN] Satirical print on James II and Louis XIV. James II sits next to him and asks for help. In the background the Dutch fleet in England. The three scenes at the bottom of the picture now propose: the coach of the French ambassador to Rome, Lavardin; the devil appears to Father Peters; and the ghost of Charles I walking around. COWLEY, ABRAHAM
London: Printed for Charles Harper, 1689. FIRST EDITION. From a distinguished collection, in extremely attractive condition, and in a fine contemporaneous binding, this is the first appearance of the botanical writings of one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley (1616-67) was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15 and went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. A staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen, Henrietta Maria, he helped encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters, including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point, Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death, Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey (noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England"), but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument, pictured in our frontispiece, refers to him as "the English Virgil," and Perkin asserts that his "fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. 297 x 192 mm. (11 5/8 x 7 1/2"). [20], 166 (148-9 misnumbered 140-1), [2] pp. FIRST EDITION. VERY PLEASING CON … [Click Below for Full Description]
