Bossuet (1627-1704) was the bishop of Meaux, a brilliant orator, and advisor to Louis XIV. He composed these teachings on the Catholic mass in the midst of what the NCE calls the "severity of his later years"; they reflect a devoted and uncompromising faith. This is the second edition, with the title-page imprint maintaining the same publisher and year as the first but really printed in the Netherlands, by Adrian Moetjens, although saying it is merely for sale there. This printing is even scarcer than the uncommon first: WorldCat locates => no U.S. institutional holdings of this Moetjens-sold edition. Later editions were published under the title Explication des prières de la Messe.

DOTTI Bartolomeo
s.e, 1689. [Click Below for Full Description]

Though part of the Protestant United Provinces (Dutch Republic), Utrecht was historically a Catholic center. The Church continued to be a strong presence in the seventeenth century. About 40% of the population was Catholic. This percentage was higher among elite groups.
