Pascal Blaise
Chez Nicolas Schoute (Elzevier), A Cologne (Amsterdam), 1689. In-12° (142x80mm), pp. (24), 432, legatura coeva p. pelle con titolo e ricchi fregi in oro su dorso a nervetti. Tagli a spruzzo rossi. Frontespizio in rosso e in nero con sfera armillare. Al contropiatto, antica nota manoscritta che restituisce la paternità dell'opera a Pascal. Una piccola macchia al taglio centrale. Minimi restauri a cuffie e cerniere. Lievemente brunito. Buon esemplare. 1186). Rahir, 2874. Brunet, III, 437. Cfr. Willems, p. 220, n. 856 a passim. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PRATILLI, Francesco Maria.
Ebert 17903; Brunet IV, col. 857. First edition of a comprehensive account of the entire Via Appia, one of the main ancient roads through Italy, by the Italian priest Francesco Maria Pratilli (1689-1763). It is divided into 4 "libri", each treating a different part of the road from Rome southeast to Brindisi, mentioning places to eat, historical monuments (it passes some of the finest Republican and Imperial inscriptions), markets, cities etc., which can be found along the road. In the 19th century it was discovered that Pratilli was involved in a vast series of skilled forgeries, referring to and making up sources that never existed. Nevertheless, the present work contains some new and valuable information and remained an important work on the Via Appia for a long time: "Travail important et rempli d'érudition" (Brunet). With bookplate and library stamp. Endleaves smudged, but text in very good condition. Binding only slightly rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise good.

SCHÜBLER, Johann Jakob.
Bierens de Haan 3621-3622; STCN (5 copies); WorldCat (adding 2 more copies); cf. Millard coll. (northern European) 114; not in BAL. Rare first and only Dutch edition, published soon after the first, undated, edition (in German) and printed from its plates, of the first two volumes of a well-illustrated course in architectural decoration and related decorative design by the Nürnberg architect, mathematician and draughtsman Johann Jakob Schübler (1689-1741). The third volume was never published in Dutch, but these two form a richly illustrated concise course in the art of architectural drawing and ornamental design for architects. Besides the columns that form the main part of volume 1 it presents examples of richly ornamental porches, balconies, bay windows, doorways, cabinets, furniture, stoves, carriages, sledges and other architectural ornament, all explained in the accompanying text. At the same time the book presents and illustrates the mathematics of drafting techniques, including perspective drawing. Schüber has been by turns embraced and eschewed for his extravagant baroque fantasy, displayed here especially in the bay windows, stoves and especially the carriages and sledges, reminiscent of those at Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich. With an occasional minor smudge or spot and a few winkles in the paper, but still in very good condition, the binding fine. A richly ornamental display of late baroque architectural design with instructions for the student.

Edward Sexby
Not Attributed. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1689. Second Edition. Hardcover. (iv), 17+(1) pages; Edward Sexby - Colonel Edward Sexby or Saxby was an English Puritan soldier and Leveller in the army of Oliver Cromwell. Later he turned against Cromwell and plotted his assassination. , Silius Titus - Silius or Silas Titus, of Bushey, was an English politician, captain of Deal Castle, and Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King Charles II. Colonel Titus was an organiser in the attempted escape of King Charles I from Carisbrooke Castle. Width: 6.25" Height: 8.25"Book Details: The sources cited note that Allen was the pseudonym of Silius Titus and Edward Sexby. Colin Firth concluded that Titus wrote the dedication to the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, and Sexby wrote the substance of the pamphlet, although he argues that Titus was responsible for the more learned aspects of the text. See Firth, "Killing No Murder," in The English Historical Review 17: 66 (April 1902) , 308-11. This assertion is questioned by James Holstun, who assigned greater credit to Sexby for the entire work. Furthermore, Holstun pointed out there was a William Allen in Cromwell's army who disclaimed authorship. See Holstun, "Ehud's Dagger: Patronage, Tyrannicide, and Killing No Murder," in Cultural Critique 22 (Autumn 1992) , 99-142. Condition / Notes: This is a reprint of the original edition of 1657 (Wing T1312A and S2826. Kennedy, Smith, and Johnson 3, 218) , with dedications to Cromwell and the officers and soldiers of the Army, and a postscript. In spite of the dedication, the author justified the auth … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leguat, Francis (c1637-1735)
[8]+xv+248+[24] pages with title in red and black, frontispiece, 4 folding maps, 27 engraved figures (many folding) and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5"") bound in quarter leather with raised spine bands and black label in gilt over marbled boards. First English edition.Francois Leguat was a French Huguenot originating from the Province of Bresse, now part of the department of Ain, who fled to Holland in 1689 after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Marquis Henri du Quesne had published a book giving a glowing description of the island of Réunion. and, with the cooperation of the Dutch East India Company, was planning to establish a colony of French Protestant refugees on the island. Two ships were charted for the purpose and many refugees, including Leguat, were eager to become colonists, but when du Quesne learnt that France had sent a squadron of ships to the island, he abandoned this plan as he wanted to avoid any confrontation with the French. Instead he fitted out a small frigate,L'Hirondelle and instructed the captain, Anthony Valleau, to reconnoitre the Mascarene islands, and to take possession of whatever island was found unoccupied and suitable for colonisation. It appears that the colonists were not informed of this change of plan. On 10 July 1690 Leguat and nine male volunteers boarded L'Hirondelle in Amsterdam, intending to start a new life on the island of Réunion, which they believed had been abandoned by the French. Instead, on 16 May 1691, Leguat and seven companions were marooned on the uninhabited island of Rodrigues. After spending a year on the is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Atkyns
Timothy Goodwin, 1689. 1st Edition . No Binding. Good. (4), 15, (1)p. Jester watermark to last leaf and title page. Rye House Plot. The second of Sir Robert Atkyns' tracts in reply to Sir Bartholomew Shower. William Russell (1639-1683) was a politician and conspirator. Sir Robert Atkyns (1621-1710) was a judge and politician. He came to "the defence of Lord Russell, whom the government charged with treason after the discovery of the Rye House plot. Although he could not officially serve as counsel, Atkyns agreed to help Russell's lawyers Henry Pollexfen and John Holt in their efforts. He entered the fray despite the fact that in the wake of the plot's discovery local officials searched his house and removed all weapons, even the sword with which he had been knighted at the Restoration (it was returned to him in 1689). In letters to Russell's family and friends Atkyns joined Pollexfen and Holt in arguing against Russell's conviction on the ground that not all of the jurors were forty-shilling freeholders or possessed of £100 in goods. Russell was executed on 21 June 1683, too quickly for an appeal to be filed. Shortly before he laid his head on the block he handed the sheriff a document in which he presented an argument that had probably come from Atkyns, namely that, under statute 2 Edward III c. 2, Russell's mere presence when insurrection was being plotted made him guilty of misprision of treason, not treason itself. Atkyns later published some of these letters along with more extensive arguments in two tracts written in reply to the tory Sir Bartholomew Shower's … [Click Below for Full Description]

NAGASAKI TRADE WITH CHINESE
1689. Japan: late Edo.Until the late 17th century, the Chinese had been permitted to move in Japan quite freely for trading purposes. But in 1689, due to the rise of smuggling activities, the Chinese were restricted, like the Dutch, to a compound on the eastern tip of Nagasaki - called the "Tojin yashiki" ("Chinamen's mansions") - surrounded by a moat and walls with gates which could be locked from the outside. Inside were housed on average 2000 Chinese merchants and sailors, along with interpreters, inspectors, and staff. This scroll depicts two large Chinese ships just off Nagasaki surrounded by a number of smaller transport and supply ships. It is clear that these smaller ships are Japanese based on the clothes the crewmen are wearing. The numerous Japanese government officials are dressed in black robes; they are inspecting the arriving goods (sugar, raw silk, and finished fabrics) along with antiques. The final section of the scroll depicts a portion of Tojin yashiki. We see the arriving transport ships, warehouses, government workers inspecting the arriving goods, laborers carrying goods, etc. This scroll - based on a scroll at the City Museum of Kobe entitled "Nagasaki tokan koeki zukan" - is unfinished in several ways: it has not been fully colored and it is clearly incomplete at the end. Nevertheless, this is a marvelous record of the early trading days in Japan with the outside world.Minor worming carefully repaired, otherwise in fine condition.

Giacomo CANTELLI
Roma 1689 - Carta geografica tratta dal Mercurio Geografico edito a Roma dal De Rossi.
