MELANI, Jacopo 1623-76
Firenze: Vangelisti, 1689. 171 x 257 mm. On laid paper. A fine, dark impression with good margins. Published in Delle Poesie Dramatiche di G.A. Moniglia. Browned at edges with several small chips to blank margins; one vertical crease, flattened; hinged at upper corners of verso. Mancini, Muraro, and Povoledo, eds.: Illusione e Pratica Teatrale 35. Ercole in Tebe, a "festa teatrale" with music by Melani, libretto by Giovanni Andrea Moniglia (1624-1700), and stage settings by Ferdinando Tacca (1619-86) was composed for and first performed at the wedding of Cosimo de' Medici and Marguerite d'Orléans in Firenze at the Teatro degli Immobile in July of 1661. A set of engravings by Valerio Spada (1613-88) accompanied the first edition of the libretto in 1661. A later set of etchings with small differences was executed by Belloni, including the present example. "Jacopo Melani was the leading 17th-century composer of comic operas... [Ercole in Tebe] set the style for the operas composed for the coronations of Louis XIV (Cavalli's Ercole amante, 1662) and Leopold I of Austria (Cesti's Il pomo d'oro, 1668)... Melani's music, which is tuneful, graceful and, especially in the lovers' parts, tinged with sweet melancholy, established melodic prototypes which, through the revival of his comic operas early in the 18th century, informed the styles of Ferdinando Rutini, Moneta and Neri Bondi. By the third quarter of the century that style had merged harmoniously with the Florentine taste for farces 'in the French manner'." Robert Lamar Weaver in Grove Music Online.

These two items are accompanied by a third individual work bound in, that is missing its frontispiece but is otherwise complete. It is Willhelm Goeree's Anweisung Zu der Practic oder Handlung der allgemeinen Mahler Kunst ...., Hamburg, 1678 translated by Johann Langen. Barent Coenders Van Helpen
Charles Pieman, Groningue. Singular work in the history of alchemy and surely the most exotic in the rendering of its plates with the acrostics for the alchemical terms and elements. Second issue of the first edition of this extremely rare work on alchemy in French by Coenders Van Helpen. "The fact that the title leaf bears a different watermark from the rest of the book suggests that it is a cancelled leaf, the whole being a reissue of unsold sheets of the 1686 edition together with two leaves of errata. In other words this is not a new edition but the second issue of the first edition" (Mellon Coll. 142). Extremley rare work. ABPC gives a single copy sold in may 2011 for 6300 EUR, with the engravings somewhat browned. The engravings in our copy are in perfect condition, extremely bright and strong impression. The CCFR BNF locates a single copy in France at Sorbonne. The frontispice is missing in this particular copy (it was never bound in) but it is replaced by a very good facsimile on old paper of the same quality (see photo). There were two editions of this work, the first one with two issues (1686 and 1689), the other published in 1693, with another title "Tresor de la philosophie des anciens". All three editions are rare, but the first two almost impossible to find. The books is highly sought after especially because of it's fantastic plates with acrostics, some of the most beautiful in the history of the hermetic iconology. As the author explains, the work is divided in 4 books which reveal the 10 degrees of ancient wisdom and is written as a conversation between Fran … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barent Coenders Van Helpen
Groningue: Charles Pieman, 1689. Singular work in the history of alchemy and surely the most exotic in the rendering of its plates with the acrostics for the alchemical terms and elements.Second issue of the first edition of this extremely rare work on alchemy in French by Coenders Van Helpen. 142).Extremley rare work. ABPC gives a single copy sold in may 2011 for 6300 EUR, with the engravings somewhat browned. The engravings in our copy are in perfect condition, extremely bright and strong impression. The CCFR BNF locates a single copy in France at Sorbonne. The frontispice is missing in this particular copy (it was never bound in) but it is replaced by a very good facsimile on old paper of the same quality (see photo)There were two editions of this work, the first one with two issues (1686 and 1689), the other published in 1693, with another title "Tresor de la philosophie des anciens". All three editions are rare, but the first two almost impossible to find. The books is highly sought after especially because of it's fantastic plates with acrostics, some of the most beautiful in the history of the hermetic iconology. As the author explains, the work is divided in 4 books which reveal the 10 degrees of ancient wisdom and is written as a conversation between F … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pinetti, Francesco, Genoese navigator (fl. 1680s).
[Liguria, Genoa], 1689. Large 4to (180 x 270 mm). Italian manuscript on paper. 60 written pages on 35 leaves, textually complete, ca. 30 lines. Contemporary vellum over card. A 17th century working handbook providing sailing instructions from the port city of Genoa, written in two parts: westwards towards southern Spain and to Cadiz, and south through the Liguarian and Tyrrhenian Sea towards Calabria. It contains a description of the city of Genoa (2 pp.), directions along the southern French and eastern Spanish coasts to Sanlúcar de Barrameda via Menton, Monaco, Villefranche, Marseille, Cadaques, Barcelona, Valencia, Cartagena, Marbella, Gibraltar, and Cadiz (39 pp.); and directions from Genoa along the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy to Capo Vaticano in Calabria via Livorno, Fiumicino, Naples, etc. (18 pp.). The invocation of the muses before the text is a quotation from Torquato Tasso's "Gerusalemme Liberata": "O Musa, tu che di caduchi allori / non circondi la fronte in Halicona [.]". - The genesis of the portolan chart as we know it in pictorial form is inextricably linked to the production in the late medieval period of these textual sailing instructions of the Mediterranean Sea, known as "portolani" in Italy, and later as "roteiros" by the Portuguese and "rutters" by the Dutch and English, written by mariners as guides for sailing from port to port in the Mediterranean. - Binding torn and frayed. Lower corner damaged with insignificant loss to letters; edges frayed, marginal thumbing and staining, final leaf loose. JUMPING JACK].
- Cf. Adams & Keene, Paper dolls, pp. 14-20; Hillier, Dolls and doll-makers, p. 45. Rare hand-coloured print for making a jumping jack in the form of a rococo woman wearing a short dress and a plumed hat, possibly intended to represent a shepherdess from the Commedia dell'arte. Rudimentary marionettes such as these with articulated limbs were in great vogue in Paris in the 1740s and 1750s and called pantins after the nearby village where they were supposedly invented. The diarist Edmond Barbier (1689-1771) wrote in his journal in 1747: "At first the Pantins were designed for children's toys; but after a time they were used to amuse the entire public. They were little figures made of pasteboard. All parts of the body were separate and were attached by strings at the back of the figure. When these strings were pulled, the arms, legs, and head were all jointed together and the Pantin could be made to dance These silly things engrossed the attention of all of Paris, amusing everyone to such an extent that you could not go into any house in January 1747, without finding a Pantin hanging by the mantelpiece" (Hillier). D'Alembert wrote in the Encyclopédie, 24 (1778), s.v. "Pantins", that "posterity will find it difficult to believe that in France persons of a ripe age could have, in an access of vertigo that lasted far too long, amused themselves with these ridiculous toys and employed themselves in searching for them with such enthusiasm, while in other countries Pantins were relegated to children of the most tender age" (Adams).Slightly worn at the edges; somewhat browned and wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antal Beke, Index manuscriptorum bibliothecae., 1871, pag. 29, n. 300.) riporterebbe come autore, certo monsignor Urbano Giorio. Very pleasing contemporary red morocco, elaborately panelled in gilt, covers with mitered frames composed of gilt rules, decorative rolls, pointillé tooling and floral sprays, raised bands, spine intricately gilt in compartments with central star-like design and scrolling cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, possible (very expert) repair to top spine compartment. Frontispiece engraving of Cowley's tomb. Front pastedown with the bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Wing C-6665; ESTC R21164. Spine and head of rear board sunned, a bit of wear to joints and extremities, boards tending to splay slightly, faint scattered dark flecks to leather, text with isolated spots and browning, but an excellent copy, the binding solid and only minimally worn, and internally very fresh and clean. From a distinguished collection, in extremely attractive condition, and in a fine contemporaneous binding, this is the first appearance of the botanical writings of one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley (1616-67) was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15 and went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. A staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen, Henrietta Maria, he helped encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters, including the royal couple themselves. Tagli dorati. Elegante legatura in pelle, contropiatti in carta marmorizzata. [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed for the author, and are to be sold by Richard Baldwin in the Old-Baily, 1689. First edition. [viii], 325, [3] pp., with separate part title-pages. 8vo. Contemporary dark-blue morocco, covers tooled in gilt to a cottage-roof design with small floral tools and volutes, spine richly gilt with small floral tools in six compartments with raised bands, a.e.g., comb-marbled endpapers. Wear to extremities with tissue repairs along joints. First edition. [viii], 325, [3] pp., with separate part title-pages. 8vo. First edition in a fine contemporary cottage-roof binding of this collection of tracts by the clergyman and whig pamphleteer Samuel Johnson (1649-1703). Following the publication of A Humble and Hearty Address to All English Protestants in this Present Army (1686), in which he urged Protestant troops to refuse orders under James II, Johnson was flogged, pilloried and imprisoned. Johnson was pardoned and his punishment deemed "cruel and illegal" by Parliament following the ascension of William and Mary. The present work, which collects tracts mostly written while in prison, is dedicated to William III and was published after Johnson's release. This copy in an attractive example of the Restoration cottage-roof style. It belongs to a group of a dozen or so bindings that Howard Nixon attributes to a binder "Probably not Robert Steel" - so-named because of a former misattribution to Steel (cf. Nixon, English Restoration Bookbindings, p. 24, nos. 40-1). Nixon's no. 41 is a similarly bound example of the same work by Johnson. Amsterdam: Chez Jean de la Tourterelle, 1689. A tear to bottom of spine, some foxing to page edges, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Bookplate to pastedown.. Volume I et II en un volume. Amsterdam, Chez Jean de la Tourterelle, M.DC.LXXXIX [1689]. 8,5 cm x 14 cm. 358 pages, 408 pages. Hardcover / Original vellum. A tear to bottom of spine, some foxing to page edges, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Bookplate to pastedown. Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de Brantôme (c.?1540 – 15 July 1614), also known as the abbé de Brantôme, was a French historian, soldier, and biographer. De Bourdeille was born in Périgord, Aquitaine, the third son of the baron de Bourdeille. His mother and maternal grandmother were both attached to the court of Marguerite of Navarre, on whose death in 1549 he went to Paris, and later (1555) to Poitiers, to finish his education.
