Hooghe, Romeijn de
?Receptie van H.K.M. de Princ. Van Orangie als koningin van gr. Britange. / Reception of Her Royal High the Pricesse of Orange as queene of great Brittain.? [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Sprat
London: Edward Jones, 1689. Large paper copy of the first edition in a binding seemingly meant for presentation, 4to (235 x 185 mm.), pp. [4], 64; title within double-ruled border; contemporary red turkey morocco, covers with elaborate paneling in gilt with fleurons at the corners and sides, unlettered gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, a.e.g.; binding a little rubbed, but still very good and sound. This is the second of two letters written by Sprat at the time of the Revolution, in which he attempts to justify his taking a seat of an ecclesiastical commission established in 1686 by James II. Sprat was not averse to James's declaration for liberty of conscience, but by the time James fled to France Sprat's sympathy for his monarch was awkward. This copy with the early armorial bookplate of the Duke of Beaufort (Henry Somerset): his sympathy for James makes him a logical recipient for Sprat's self-justifications. Wing S5049. First edition of an important and scarce biography of John II, King of Portugal (1455-1495). John II (Portuguese: João II), the Perfect Prince, is credited for re-establishing the power of the Portuguese throne, reinvigorating its economy, and renewing its exploration of Africa and the Orient. He was the king that signed the famous Treaty of Tordesillas. During his reign many aristocrats lost power. His reign was also marked by conspiracies and treason, as a result King John II suppressed the power of the powerful House of Braganza. King John's only heir, Afonso of Portugal (1475-1491), died in a mysterious circumstances, in a fall from a horse, "The hypothesis of murder was never proven, but at the time the Catholic kings had everything to gain with this disappearance. Even more, the tutor of the young Castilian Alfonso Castile disappeared the same day, after being the only eyewitness to the incident.". The work contains a fantastic account of all the marking events of King John II reign including the intrigues and treasons, the explorations in Africa and India, the treaties celebrated, etc. The work also describes the meeting between John II and Christopher Columbus. The chronicle is by Manuel Teles da Silva, 1st Marquis of Alegre (1641-1709), an influential figure of the Portuguese court of the time. Marquis de Alegrete, was the negotiator of the Treaty of Methuen (1703), an important military and commercial treaty between England and Portugal as part of the War of the Spanish Succession. JONES, William Sir
1689. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The Constitution had been equally imperfect and destructive of it self, had it been left to the Will and Choice of the Prince whether he would ever summon a Parliament, or put into his Power to dismiss them Arbitrarily at his pleasure." - Design of Enslaving England, p.1 Originally published in 1681 at the height of the Exclusion Crisis, this book, "The Design of Enslaving England", This book deals mainly with the reign of Charles II of England and the Exclusion Crisis, where a bill sought to exclude Charles II's brother James from the throne of England because of his Catholic faith. The author draws similarities to the Medieval Ottoman emperors and the wickedness they portrayed to their successors and subjects. It is evident that the author seeks to promote more power being given to the English Parliament rather than the king himself. A rare pamphlet complete as originally printed. Catalogers disagree on the authorship of this work. Wing attributes this work to Robert Ferguson, however, the ESTC and DNB opt for Sir William Jones to be the author. [Attributes: First Edition]

SCHÜBLER, Johann Jakob.
Bierens de Haan 3621-3622; STCN (5 copies); WorldCat (adding 2 more copies); cf. Millard coll. (northern European) 114; not in BAL. Rare first and only Dutch edition, published soon after the first, undated, edition (in German) and printed from its plates, of the first two volumes of a well-illustrated course in architectural decoration and related decorative design by the Nürnberg architect, mathematician and draughtsman Johann Jakob Schübler (1689-1741). The third volume was never published in Dutch, but these two form a richly illustrated concise course in the art of architectural drawing and ornamental design for architects. Besides the columns that form the main part of volume 1 it presents examples of richly ornamental porches, balconies, bay windows, doorways, cabinets, furniture, stoves, carriages, sledges and other architectural ornament, all explained in the accompanying text. At the same time the book presents and illustrates the mathematics of drafting techniques, including perspective drawing. Schüber has been by turns embraced and eschewed for his extravagant baroque fantasy, displayed here especially in the bay windows, stoves and especially the carriages and sledges, reminiscent of those at Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich. With an occasional minor smudge or spot and a few winkles in the paper, but still in very good condition, the binding fine. A richly ornamental display of late baroque architectural design with instructions for the student.

WEIGEL, Erhard.
Jena, Johann Bielcken, 1689.4to. Marbled wrappers. ( 24) lvs.

Sonneck p. 595. Moniglia (1624-1700) "must be reckoned among the most original librettists of the 17th century... MELANI, Jacopo 1623-76
Firenze: Vangelisti, 1689. 171 x 257 mm. On laid paper. A fine, dark impression with good margins. Published in Delle Poesie Dramatiche di G.A. Moniglia. Browned at edges with several small chips to blank margins; one vertical crease, flattened; hinged at upper corners of verso. Mancini, Muraro, and Povoledo, eds.: Illusione e Pratica Teatrale 35. Ercole in Tebe, a "festa teatrale" with music by Melani, libretto by Giovanni Andrea Moniglia (1624-1700), and stage settings by Ferdinando Tacca (1619-86) was composed for and first performed at the wedding of Cosimo de' Medici and Marguerite d'Orléans in Firenze at the Teatro degli Immobile in July of 1661. A set of engravings by Valerio Spada (1613-88) accompanied the first edition of the libretto in 1661. A later set of etchings with small differences was executed by Belloni, including the present example. "Jacopo Melani was the leading 17th-century composer of comic operas... [Ercole in Tebe] set the style for the operas composed for the coronations of Louis XIV (Cavalli's Ercole amante, 1662) and Leopold I of Austria (Cesti's Il pomo d'oro, 1668)... Melani's music, which is tuneful, graceful and, especially in the lovers' parts, tinged with sweet melancholy, established melodic prototypes which, through the revival of his comic operas early in the 18th century, informed the styles of Ferdinando Rutini, Moneta and Neri Bondi. By the third quarter of the century that style had merged harmoniously with the Florentine taste for farces 'in the French manner'." Robert Lamar Weaver in Grove Music Online.
