Volume in condizioni splendide.

        Poems on several Occasions.

Printed for Tho. Basset; Will. Hensman and Tho. Fox 1689 - FIRST EDITION, a little browned and stained in places, one leaf dust-stained in the fore-margin and frail at foot, rust hole in one leaf in a blank area, pp. [viii], 729, [1, ad], 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked preserving most of the original spine, the gilt almost entirely faded away, red lettering piece, contemporary initials EJL on flyleaf, inscription of John Amson dated 1722 on title and also on flyleaf, later armorial bookplate of E. & F. Bolton, good ‘The posthumously published Poems on Several Occasions (1689) exhibits the full range of Cotton’s work, encompassing love poetry, epigram (many in imitation of Martial), burlesque, political polemic (there is an unexpected savagery in his attacks on Cromwell in ‘A Litany’ and on the turncoat Waller in ‘To Poet E. W.’), romance (‘Philoxipes and Policrite’), and even epic (‘The Battail of Yvry’). While several poems seem fully to engage with the literary fashions of the Restoration (those addressed to Aphra Behn and Katherine Phillips, for instance, or the lovely ‘Elegy’ on the prostitute ‘M. H.’), Cotton's principal echoes are often of an earlier time: Shakespeare, Spenser, John Taylor the water poet. His copies of the two last survive, the Spenser heavily annotated.‘Cotton’s later reputation has had its vicissitudes. In the eighteenth century he was renowned for burlesque and his lyrical poetry was barely known; the nineteenth century found the burlesques too gross, but Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Lamb rediscovered him as poet of nature, praising and imitating his ‘Quatrains’ of times and seasons, a characterization which, enhanced by his co-authorship of The Compleat Angler, brought him a continuing reputation into the twentieth century. Benjamin Britten set Cotton’s ‘Evening Quatrains’ in his Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings (1943). Only in 1992, however, did The Valiant Knight and Scarronnides appear in a modern edition and The Scoffer Scoft has still to do so. The ‘Compleat’ Cotton has yet to be reintegrated’ (ODNB).Though carelessly edited, ‘this is the edition which gave so much delight to Lamb, Coleridge and Wordsworth’ (Pfrozheimer). The works . . . containing great variety of choice secrets in medicine and alchymy

Thomas Milbourne for the author, London 1689 - Glauber, Johann Rudolph (1604-70). The works of the highly experienced and famous chymist, John Rudolph Glauber . . .Translated into English . . . by the labour, care, and charge, of Christopher Packe . . . Folio. [12], 440, [4], 220, 92, [11]pp. 7 engraved plates (including frontispiece), 4 woodcut plates, woodcut text illustrations. London: Thomas Milbourn for the author, 1689. 353 x 230 mm. Paneled calf ca. 1689, rebacked, corners repaired, endpapers renewed. Light toning, some fore-edges a bit frayed, marginal tear in frontispiece repaired, but very good. From the libraries of British chemists Charles Hatchett (1765-1847), with his ownership stamp on the verso title, and his son-in-law William Thomas Brande (1788-1866), with his signature on the title. Armorial bookplate of British metallurgist Hugh Lee Pattinson (1796-1858).First Edition in English of the collected works of Glauber, who has been called "the best practical chemist of his day and the first industrial chemist" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). A self-taught chemist and alchemist in the iatrochemical tradition of Paracelsus, Glauber was responsible for many practical advances in the science of chemistry, the most important being the invention of improved distilling furnaces (he may have been the first to construct one with a chimney) that greatly increased the range of distillable substances. This English collected works opens with his Furni novi philosophici, originally published in German between 1646-1649, which contains most of his significant chemical achievements. Glauber used concentrated forms of hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acid to prepare chlorides, nitrates and sulfates, was probably the first to distill coal and to obtain from it benzene and phenol, obtained acroleins by distilling burned clay balls soaked in olive oil, produced metal acetates and acetone with distilled wood vinegar, and obtained potassium carbonate and potassium silicate from powdered flints. His efficient production of the mineral acids is particularly noteworthy, as they are essential reactants in other chemical processes. Glauber's influence quickly spread throughout Europe, and his efforts were praised by both Robert Boyle and Hermann Boerhaave. The collection also contains English translations of Glauber's Pharmacopoea spagyrica (1654-68), a collection of iatrochemical medical preparations; dess Teutschlands-Wohlfahrt (1656-61), a work encouraging Germans to make better use of their natural resources; Miraculum mundi (1653-60), on the "universal salt"; Tractatus de natura salium (1658), discussing Glauber's "sal mirabile" (hydrated sodium sulfate); and Operis mineralis (1651). Glauber's works were originally published piecemeal, with several appendices; one of these appendices contains his important and useful work on the coloring of glass, including his rediscovery of the process for ruby glass which had been lost for years. This copy has a distinguished chemical provenance, having belonged to Charles Hatchett, who discovered the element niobium; Hatchett's son-in-law William Thomas Brande, who succeeded Humphry Davy in the chair of chemistry at the Royal Institution; and metallurgist Hugh Lee Pattinson, who developed an economical method for extracting silver from lead ore.

1689 - Rare first edition of this account of buccaneering in the West Indies and the Pacific coast of South America. 1689. Paris. Jean Baptiste Coignard. In 8vo (166 mm x 95 mm). 1 [blank] + 8 ff. + 448 + 2 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary French calf, raised bands to spine, tooled and lettered in gilt, old restorations but an attractive copy in its first binding. A remarkably fresh and clean copy. First edition. A colorful narrative, filled with details of his exploits, portraying a “realistic picture of the life of pirates” (Bourgeois and Andrew); “He details both the romantic and the bleak sides of the buccaneering profession, interwoven with colorful descriptions of the natives of the region and a clear picture of the Spanish colonies on the Pacific" (Hill). It gave Defoe inspiration for Robinson Crusoe. Raveneau de Lussan doesn’t strike one as the archetype of a 17th century pirate; he, according to his own account, was a “devout” Catholic, who insisted on attending mass before looting –churches were off-limits- and didn’t allow his crew to disturb the clergy; he took on piracy (1684) in the West Indies and the Pacific coast of South America (including Chili) to settle his creditors and be able to return to his “fashionable” (Maggs) life back home. During his buccaneering years, he attacked Realejo in Guatemala, Grenada, Guayaquil (Peru), amongst many other ports. His narrative was included in almost all editions of Exquemelin´s seminal history of the pirates, assessing to its importance. Alden & Landis 689/152. Sabin 67983. AN ACT DECLARING THE RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES OF THE SUBJECT, AND SETTLING THE SUCCESSION OF THE CROWN. [Contained in:] [BOUND VOLUMES OF 106 PARLIAMENTARY ACTS]

London. 1689-1694.. Three volumes, containing 106 acts. Folio. Contemporary paneled calf. Slight wear to corners and hinges. Scattered light toning and soiling. Contemporary notations to some Acts. With the bookplate of Charles Bill. A handsome set. A set of three volumes containing 106 Parliamentary Acts, covering the early portion of the reign of William and Mary, including the first printing of the English Bill of Rights, passed by Parliament in December 1689. The English Bill of Rights was the culmination of the coup d'état known as the Glorious Revolution, in which James II was deposed and William of Orange and his wife Mary (daughter of James II) were brought in to replace him. James II, a Catholic monarch, fathered a legitimate son in 1688, creating the possibility of a Catholic succession in Protestant England. James II had already ruffled quite a few feathers by trying to reestablish Catholicism, displacing Anglicanism as the only official church in England; he was also considered to be too pro- French and was highly autocratic. The leading Whig noblemen, joined by a few key members of the Tory party, called on William of Orange to lead an army from the Netherlands to claim the throne. James II fled England in December, 1688, leaving the Protestant William and Mary to rule the kingdom jointly. The new monarchs came to power accepting the principle of a constitutional monarchy, a fundamental evolution in English government that greatly decreased the power of the throne and opened the door for the modern parliamentary system. A wave of legislation formally embodied the principles of the so called "Glorious Revolution" of 1688. Foremost among this legislation was the English Bill of Rights, actually entitled an "Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject...." It provides for several immutable political and civil rights, including the freedom from unilateral royal interference with the law, including the imposition of new taxes; freedom to petition the monarch; freedom of election of Parliamentary members, and freedom for those members to speak out freely and without reprisals while in Parliament; freedom for Protestants to bear arms; and freedom from a standing army in times of peace, requiring Parliament's consent to convene the army. It also specifically overturns several of the Acts passed by James II as unlawful and unjust. Not only did the English Bill of Rights add to the rights set forth in the Magna Charta, it also established very clearly the order of succession to the reign of William and Mary. The throne would go to any of Mary's heirs or issue, thence to her sister Anne of Denmark, and finally to any of William's heirs by later marriages. It also specifically barred a Catholic from the throne, stating: "Whereas it hath been found by experience, that it is inconsistent with the safety and welfare of this Protestant kingdom, to be governed by a Popish Prince, or by any King or Queen marrying a Papist...it may be enacted that all and every person and persons that is, are, or shall be reconciled to, or shall hold communion with the See or Church of Rome, or shall profess the Popish religion, or shall marry a Papist, shall be excluded, and be for ever uncapable to inherit, possess, or enjoy the Crown and government of this realm...." The monarch was also now required to swear an oath to uphold the Protestant religion. The enactment of this new set of laws was the beginning of modern-day British Parliamentary government, moving power out of the hands of the monarch and into that of Parliament and a ministerial system. The English Bill of Rights also served as a model for the founding documents of both the United States and Canada. Some of the other Acts in the sammelband which lead up to the passing of the Bill of Rights are of particular note, and also key pieces of legislation in establishing the new relationship of the Crown, the Parliament, and the people: "An Act for the Abrogating of the Oaths of Supremacy and Allegiance, and Appointing Other Oaths." April 4, 1689. This Act negates legal loyalties to the previous sovereign, swearing fealty to the current rulers, William and Mary, and also swearing to "abhor, detest, and abjure as impious and heretical" the position that persons excommunicated or otherwise condemned by the Pope may be murdered by their subjects with impunity. "An Act for Establishing the Coronation Oath." April 9, 1689. A new coronation oath was needed in order to remove the absolute power from the hands of the monarchy. Under the new oath, the monarch swears "to govern the people of this kingdom of England, and the dominions thereto belonging, according to the statutes in Parliament agreed on, and the laws and customs of the same." Under this new oath, the monarchy was answerable to and bound by the laws passed by Parliament, rather than having free license to act on any tyrannical whim which may occur. "An Act for the Better Securing the Government by Disarming Papists and Reputed Papists." May 11, 1689. An Act mandating the disarming of anyone subscribing to the Roman Catholic faith, removing from their possession "any Arms, Weapons, Gunpowder or Ammunition." The other Acts present here cover a wide range of subjects. Some repeal previous Acts passed by James II, while others govern trade or the military. Others deal with the complete cessation of trade with France and impending conflict with that nation. At least half a dozen acts deal with the taxation on wine, beer, or spirits, and some with the taxation of tobacco. Overall, an illustrious collection of English laws, including the foundational document of British and American government. ESTC R236544.

This cartouche is topped with Arms of the Dauphin of France.Reference: Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Mor 1. Born in Avignon, Alexis-Hubert Jaillot came to Paris in 1657 with his brother Simon, and both became sculptors. In 1664, Jaillot married the daughter of Nicolas Berey, an established mapmaker, and soon joined his father-in-law in the trade. Within a few years, Jaillot became the successor to Nicolas Sanson, the greatest French mapmaker of the seventeenth century. In 1669, Jaillot undertook the re-engraving, enlarging and re-publishing of the Sanson maps in sheet form and in atlases, sparing no effort to fill the gap in the map trade left by the destruction of Blaeu's printing establishment in Amsterdam in 1672-one of the most productive cartographic establishment in the Netherlands. Jaillot redrew Sanson's maps with many additions and corrections and fresh embellishments. One of his most important works was a magnificent sea atlas, Le Neptune Francois, published in 1693 and compiled in co-operation with Jean Dominique Cassini-astronomer and mathematician who was appointed in 1669 by Louis XIV as director of the Paris Observatory. Jaillot's maps are considered to be among the most decorative ever done. They are justly famed for their large size and baroque ornamentation, and do considerable justice to their maker who was the court geographer to Louis XIV.

Rare first edition of this account of buccaneering in the West Indies and the Pacific coast of South America. 1689. A remarkably fresh and clean copy.First edition. A colorful narrative, filled with details of his exploits, portraying a "realistic picture of the life of pirates" (Bourgeois and Andrew); "He details both the romantic and the bleak sides of the buccaneering profession, interwoven with colorful descriptions of the natives of the region and a clear picture of the Spanish colonies on the Pacific\" (Hill). It gave Defoe inspiration for Robinson Crusoe.Raveneau de Lussan doesn?t strike one as the archetype of a 17th century pirate; he, according to his own account, was a "devout" Catholic, who insisted on attending mass before looting ?"churches were off-limits- and didn?t allow his crew to disturb the clergy; he took on piracy (1684) in the West Indies and the Pacific coast of South America (including Chili) to settle his creditors and be able to return to his "fashionable" (Maggs) life back home.

From the libraries of British chemists Charles Hatchett (1765-1847), with his ownership stamp on the verso title, and his son-in-law William Thomas Brande (1788-1866), with his signature on the title. Armorial bookplate of British metallurgist Hugh Lee Pattinson (1796-1858).

First Edition in English of the collected works of Glauber, who has been called "the best practical chemist of his day and the first industrial chemist" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).

No copy in OCLC.
