Memoires De Messire Pierre de Bourdeille, Seigneur de Brantome, Contenans Les Vies de Dames Galantes de fon temps.

Amsterdam: Chez Jean de la Tourterelle. A tear to bottom of spine, some foxing to page edges, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Bookplate to pastedown.. Volume I et II en un volume. Amsterdam, Chez Jean de la Tourterelle, M.DC.LXXXIX [1689]. 8,5 cm x 14 cm. 358 pages, 408 pages. Hardcover / Original vellum. A tear to bottom of spine, some foxing to page edges, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Bookplate to pastedown. Pierre de Bourdeille, seigneur de Brantôme (c.?1540 – 15 July 1614), also known as the abbé de Brantôme, was a French historian, soldier, and biographer. De Bourdeille was born in Périgord, Aquitaine, the third son of the baron de Bourdeille. His mother and maternal grandmother were both attached to the court of Marguerite of Navarre, on whose death in 1549 he went to Paris, and later (1555) to Poitiers, to finish his education. He was given several benefices, the most important of which was the abbey of Brantôme, but had no inclination for an ecclesiastical career. He became a soldier and came into contact with many of the great leaders of the continental wars. He travelled in Italy; in Scotland, where he accompanied Mary, Queen of Scots (then the widow of Francis II of France); in England, where he saw Elizabeth I (1561, 1579); in Morocco (1564); and in Spain and Portugal. De Bourdeille fought on the galleys of the Order of Malta, and accompanied his great friend, the French commander Filippo di Piero Strozzi (grandson of Filippo Strozzi the Younger), in his expedition against Terceira, in which Strozzi was killed (1582). During the French Wars of Religion under Charles IX of France, he fought for the Catholics (including at the Siege of La Rochelle (1572-1573), but he allowed himself to be won over temporarily by the ideas of the Huguenot reformers, and though he publicly separated himself from Protestantism, it had a marked effect on his mind. A fall from his horse compelled him to retire into private life about 1589, and he spent his last years in writing his Memoirs of the illustrious men and women whom he had known. His life was the subject of the historical drama film Dames galantes (1990) that focused on his relations with women. The lead role was played by Richard Bohringer. De Bourdeille can hardly be regarded as a historian proper, and his Memoirs cannot be accepted as a very trustworthy source of information. But he writes in a quaint conversational way, pouring forth his thoughts, observations or facts without order or system, and with the greatest frankness and naiveté. His works certainly gave an admirable picture of the general court-life of the time, with its unblushing and undisguised profligacy. There is not an homme illustre or a dame galante in all his gallery of portraits who hasn't engaged in what Medieval Christian prescriptions as well as the Victorian society would regard as sexual immorality; and yet the whole is narrated with the most complete unconsciousness that there is anything objectionable in their conduct. Besides the general promiscuity of the characters, some parts of the work depict in a more or less detailed fashion the practices of homosexualism (almost exclusively lesbianism), cunnilingus, and, marginally, sado-masochism (although the persons engaging in these activities usually aren't identified by name). It also contains a rather long and explicit description of the female intimate parts in general, focusing on their diversity. (Wikipedia)

1689 - Important manuscript with the state of Peru as left by the Viceroy Duque de la Palata. N.d. [dated at the end, 18 of December 1689; probably copied later, last manuscript stitched dated Huancavelica 1819]. N.p. [Peru]. 1 ff. (title) + 1 [blank] + 50 ff. + 1 [blank]. Unbound. Manuscript on paper, in three different hands, the first containing the Relacion –the main work- is in a clear scribal legible hand, faint trace of damp staining on upper margin, a nice copy of this manuscript, which escaped trimming by binders; the writer wasted no space in the confection of the manuscript, writing to the fore edge, and leaving only a short inner margin. 8,000 $ An important contemporary manuscript copy of the report left by one of the most relevant Viceroys of Peru, the Duke de la Palata, addressed to his successor, the Duke of la Monclova Melchor Portocarrero Laso de la Vega, with a full report of his government and the current state of affairs in the Viceroyalty. The Relacion del Estado del Peru by the Duque de la Palata –as well as other relaciones left by other Viceroys- are amongst the best and most reliable sources of information about Peru during the colony, in them, we find references to the state of administration, military, piracy, relations with the natives, voyages of exploration, amongst other subjects, necessary for the succeeding Viceroy, to form an accurate idea of what he needs to deal with. Melchor Navarra y Rocafull, more widely known as the Duque de la Palata (1626 – 1691), was a military and Spanish colonial officer; he reached the pinnacle of his career in the Indies when appointed Viceroy of Peru (1681 – 1689). During his reign under his reign, a census of the natives was carried out, he re-established the Casa de la Moneda of Lima, fortified the ports of Lima and Trujillo against British pirates, and fought off the pirate fleet of Edwards Davis who had previously sacked small towns on the coast; thinking him defeated, the Spanish returned to Lima, however the pirate was only regrouping, and managed to take and raid other towns, until the fleet commanded by Nicolas de Igarza defeated him definitely. The Relacion is followed by a manuscript relation left by the Viceroy of the series of earthquakes that shook Lima in 1687, culminating in the devastating pair of October, which destroyed several of the most important buildings and caused a tsunami on the port of Callao. At the end of the manuscript, we find another manuscript by Alonso Gonzales, engineer, regarding the state of mines, dated 1819. There is another copy of this manuscript at the Biblioteca Nacional de Espa

Jullet 1689

[Angers], 1689. Broadside, (). First edition. This royal proclamation regulates the prices bakers can charge for different varieties of bread in Angers in proportion to the cost of wheat and rye, perhaps as a result of the economic pressures of the beginning of the Nine Years' War. Includes regulation of meat prices, and a promise that price regulations will be considered the next Thursday for woodcutters and coopers. These regulations were to be posted over the city as well as announced in parish sermons; the fines for breaking these price regulations ran fairly steep - ten lives for each instance of contravention. Signed in type, "Cavé". With the small stamp in the lower right hand corner, of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, the great library created initially by the Lindsay family at Balcarres in Fife in the late 16th century. It was significantly enhanced by Alexander William Crawford Lindsay (1812-1880), 25th Earl of Crawford & 8th Earl of Balcarres and his son James Ludovic Lindsay, the 26th Earl of Crawford, with the number of books eventually reaching almost 200,000 volumes. While significant portions of the collection were incorporated into the John Rylands Library, pieces were sold off over the years (see "The Bibliotheca Lindesiana" in The Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, 1946). Some creasing and wear to the edges; two corners chipped, otherwise very good. [OCLC locates no copies].

Central image of Pope Alexander VIII chaired and carried in procession at shoulder-height, surrounded by ten smaller images of him performing ceremonial and official rituals during the Jubilee.

Elzevir. first editions. Editions elzéviriennes the Sphere. Full contemporary calf, spine tooled raised. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Tenelière, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 years, he died poor when he was rich. All these dialogues are quite rare and not easily found. A hitch with a bit missing. Good copy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!         L'Hipermestra. Engraving of Scene 1, Act 1, "Cortile Regio," by M. Bellonni after Silvio degli Alli

Firenze: Vincenzo Vangelisti, 1689. 182 x 238 mm.margins. Printed on laid paper. The scene depicts a courtyard enclosed by columns and arches. A female singer in the foreground and a group of six soldiers (possibly the chorus) is in the background. Slightly worn; some minor foxing' central vertical crease; remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso. "[Cavalli] was the most performed, and perhaps the most representative, composer of opera in the quarter-century after Monteverdi and was a leading figure, as both composer and performer, in Venetian musical life." Thomas Walker and Irene Alm in Grove Music Online. L'Hipermestra, with text by Giovanni Andrea Moniglia (ca. 1630-1700) and sets by Ferdinando Tacca (1619-1689), was first performed in Florence in 1658. The libretto, with plates by Alli in large format, was published in that same year. The present plate is from the reissue of 1689, re-engraved and published in slightly smaller format. Sonneck p. 595. Moniglia (1624-1700) "must be reckoned among the most original librettists of the 17th century... His Hipermestra (1658, music by Cavalli) and Ercole in Tebe (1661, music by Melani) set a standard for the festa teatrale." Robert Lamar Weaver in Grove Music Online. Tacca (1619-1686) was an Italian architect and stage designer. "As well as designing buildings, such as the Teatro dell'Accademia degli Immobili (later della Pergola), built in Florence in 1656, he devised scenery, machines and apparatus for various performances and dynastic ceremonies, which are partly documented in engravings... The scenery and mechanisms for Cavalli's opera Hipermestra (libretto by G. A. Moniglia), performed at the Teatro degli Immobili in 1658 to mark the birth of the Spanish Infanta, are known from 13 engravings by Silvio degli Alli included in the published libretto."

He was one of the religious pirates, and he never allowed a Spanish town to be plundered until his crew had attended mass...” Hill adds, “He details both the romantic and bleak sides of the buccaneering profession, interwoven with colorful descriptions of the natives of the regions and a clear picture of the Spanish colonies on the Pacific.” Gosse p. 29.
