Homer, for instance, tells that their queen Penthesilea came to the help Priamus after Hector's death, and that she was killed on the battlefield by Achilles. The heros Heracles campaigned against the Amazons to get their queen's girdle, and Plutarch tells how king Theseus was besieged by the Amazons, and how their queen Hippolyta came close to conquer Athens. [Anonymous]
[Italy, c1687-1730]. [Italy,, c1687-1730].. Copper engraving. A Latin version of Pierre Aveline's view of London. Although the title cartouche has been changed, the engraver has not changed the tower of St Paul's Cathedral to its post-Fire state. Although it is intended to represent contemporary, eighteenth century London, it still shows the Elizabethan theatres in Bankside. Scouloudi records this as a variant of the view published by Antoine Aveline (1691-1743) in the early eighteenth century, but she does not record the copy published by his father, Pierre Aveline. The present example could therefore be a variant on either the father's or the son's. Scouloudi pp.59-60.

Quite superb clean copy with all three plates, plus frontispece and script translation pages present. The binding is a very plain modern cloth thing with the spine cloth missing but this is almost incidental as it would benefit enormously from a fine rebinding. Previous owner insriptions on front free end paper very neat in pen. Further owner inscription at top of title page and at rear after index. Some browning which is possibly water staining to a few pages including, unfortunately, the edges of the plate opp. page 116 of plants. Noticeable but not too severe. Less so to plate opp page 185 and 145 but more severe on chart translation of Malabar Alphabet pages. In all though this is a fabulous piece and a very rare find indeed of this sought after title.

Gerard Langbaine
London: Printed for Nicholas Cox, 1687. Condition: Very Good binding. An extracted selection of leaves from one of two unauthorized first issues of Gerard Longbaine's Momus Triumphans: or, the Plagiaries of the English Stage. Text on the flyleaf states: "these are all the leaves from Langbaine's rare catalogue mentioning Shakespeare. 1688." With four pages of prefix, unpaginated, pp. 5-8, 19-26, 29-30, and the complete index. Langbaine's catalogue is organized by author, with title, genre, and size. Footnotes for the titles detail the plagiarism, such as: "Tho. Otway.(e) caius Marius - T. 4o...(e) stollen part form Shakespear's Romeo & Juliet, Plot from Plutarch, in his life of C. Marius, and Lucan's Pharsalia, book ad." Shakespeare, a notorious 'borrower' of plots and tropes, has a page entirely to himself, with notations for many of his titles as to where the plot originated. Title and publication information taken from a reference card laid in, and the ESTC. Half green leather over marbled paper boards. Wear to the edges of the spine and boards. Very Good. (ESTC R3459.
