Happel, Eberhard Werner
1687. Superb and rare double-hemisphere world map on two sheets by Eberhard Happel, decorated with the four continents shown in allegorical form, with examples of their animal life and inhabitants. Australia is shown with the discoveries made by Tasman on his first voyage 1642-3 and second voyage 1644 and earlier Dutch discoveries are also noted : Hartog 1616, Houtman 1619, van Leeuwin 1622, Cartensz 1623, Nuyts 1627 and de Wit 1628. In having sent Tasman on two voyages, not only to chart the South Land but importantly to make contact with the natives and to engage in trade, the VOC were disappointed with the lack of trading opportunities reported by Tasman. Consequently, the VOC lost interest in further charting of the Australian continent other than for neccessary amemdments to existing charts. The post-Tasman shape of Australia depicted on maps such as this was to remain unchanged until James Cook discovered and charted the east coast in 1770. 293mm x 287mm (11.54" x 11.3")

In this book Chardin discusses his journeys from Constantinople to the Black Sea, Persia, and throughout the Middle East (Kashan, Iraq; Armenia, Crimea, and Georgia). The end of his journey took him through the Cape of Good Hope, on his way home. This second volume from the 1687 French edition was published in Lyon and features a fascinating collection of engravings depicting views of Middle Eastern temples, sepulchers, and city views.

[Popple, William].
1687. London: Printed, and Sold, by Andrew Sowle, 1687. Small octavo, pp. [15], [1, blank], 143, [+1, errata] pp. With the poem "Advice to a Son" printed at pp. 133-143. Contemporary blind-tooled sheep, excellently rebacked and restored, preserving most of the original spine. Corners lightly rubbed with some slight wear to boards. Light foxing and marginal ofísetting to endpapers. Some offsetting to gutter margins and text block of pp. 70-76 from previously laid-in object. Still, a remarkably fine copy. § First edition, dedicated to the author's "dearest daughters," of a work that is a significant distillation of Locke's principles of toleration. William Popple (1638-1708) was the nephew of Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) and was educated under his guidance. He was a successful merchant in Hull before moving to Bordeaux, where he lived from 1670 to 1688. After returning to London, he met William Penn, and became secretary of the Dry Club, established by John Locke to debate issues of religious liberty. He also translated Locke's Letter on Toleration (1689) from the Latin. When Locke was appointed a commissioner of the Board of Trade in 1696, Popple became the board's secretary. Though A Rational Catechism is written in the form of a dialogue between a father and son, the dedication to his daughters states: "I am desirous that it may be a common memorial of me unto all of you, when I shall be no more, I therefore make it yours also by this dedication." Not noted in Yolton.

1687. "Mappa dell'emisfero occidentale, pubblicata da Happel a Ulm. L'opera è inserita nel ""Mundus Mirabilis"", che contiene una estensiva descrizione dek continente americano. La mappa di Happel mostra una incompleta Nuova Zelanda, la California come un'isola sul modello di Briggs, lo stretto di Anian e un fiume Mississippi con un curioso corso. Il Rio Grande è ancora mostrato che scorre nel Golfo della California. Il Sud America è in una configurazione molto ampia. It contatins a description of America and describes and dating the manners and customs of the inhabitants. Happel's map shows an incomplete New Zealand, California as an Island on the Briggs model, The straits of Anian and a very nascent and oddly shaped Mississippi River. The Rio Grande is still shown flowing into the Gulf of California. The Straits of Anian are named, with a very promising course for the Northwest Pasasge. Only a single massive Great Lake is shown, with a direct connection with the St. Lawrence River. South America is in an extra wide configuration. The allegorical representations of the 4 continents are male figures, a very unusual departure from the normal convention of representing the continents in the female form. Amsterdam: Wolfgang, Waesbeerge, Boom, & van Someren, 1687-8. Amsterdam: Wolfgang, Waesbeerge, Boom, & van Someren,, 1687-8. 2 volumes in 1, duodecimo (135 x 70 mm). Contemporary plain vellum, yapp covers, edges speckled red. A fine, unrestored copy, covers and contents clean. The first appearance in print of Locke's Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, preceding the first edition by two years, here in an abridged draft form translated into French and published in the January section of the 1688 issue of the Bibliotheque universelle et historique (pp. 49-142 of tome huitime). Locke began work on the Essay in 1671, and worked on it intermittently for the next two decades. In the autumn of 1687 he prepared the present epitome of the work, for publication in the Bibliotheque universelle, which he communicated to the editor Jean Le Clerc, a Genevan refugee in Amsterdam whom he had met during his stay in the Netherlands in the mid-1680s. Le Clerc translated the work into French for publication; in his note to the translation, Le Clerc wrote that Locke hoped that readers would report any errors of obscurities found in the Essay, which he could then use in the revision of the text. Locke did continue to revise the Essay over the following two years, adding some chapters and rearranging others until publication in 1690, but the essence of the Essay was substantially the same as in the present publication (for the publication history of the epitome and of the Essay, see Henry Richard Fox Bourne, The Life of John Locke, vol. II, chapter 10). Locke also had some copies of the epit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johanne [Jean] Mabillon; D. Michaele
Edmundi Martin, Johannem Boudot, Stephanum Martin 1687, 1689, Paris. [xx], 244, 397, [xi] pp. + 12 engraved plates; [viii], clviii, [i], 617 pp.; 4to (vol. II, published two years after vol. I, is a little taller), later quarter vellum, calf sides over boards; leather title labels. Of the 12 full-page engravings, 4 are fold-outs; head and tailpieces; plus a few linecut illustrations. Jean Mabillon (1632-1707) was a monk of the French Benedictine congregation of St. Maur. In 1685, the king of France sent Mabillon (accompanied by another monk) on a tour through Italy in search of early Church-historical books and manuscripts for the Royal Library. Mabillon secured over 3,000 items, and these two volumes report on the monks' journey. Mabillon's application of a disciplined, orderly and logical method to assess and determine the authenticity of early manuscript materials by, in part, examining and studying their writing has led him to be considered the founder of palaeography. Museum Britanicum [i.e., British Museum library] stamp on verso of title pages and end pages (no other markings), with additional stamp indicating these volumes were for sale in its 1831 sale of duplicates. Also with a few modern Mendham Collection pencil shelfmarks. Textblocks disbound, and intentionally left in this state, with the original boards and later vellum backstrips attached together to form chemise-like covers. The backstrips are made from early manuscript fragments, remain visible, and may make for interesting further research on their identification. Boards rather rubbed; text block of vol. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Here he seeks to rectify a quirk in the law concerning collection of the tithe ("diezmo") tax. Indians and certain others who are exempt from paying the tithe tax have been raising corn and other crops on land that was lent, rented, or otherwise made available to them, thus allowing them to raise and sell more crops. => Reading between the lines, it is clear that the landowners are then splitting the "saved" sums with the farmers -- or, sometimes, simply demanding them in full -- with those payments to be taken out of the sale proceeds. Now all such arrangements must be registered and approved by the Church. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only one copy worldwide -- at the John Carter Brown Library.
