HERMANN, P.
Lugduni Batavorum, C. Boutesteyn, 1687. 8vo (195 x 115mm). pp. (18), 699, (1), with 1 engraved frontispiece and 107 engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, sides with gilt coat of arms (skilful repair to head of spine). First edition of this important catalogue of the Leiden botanic garden portraying numerous exotic recently introduced plants. "Hermann returned to Leiden in 1680 on receiving an appointment as Professor of Botany and director of the botanic garden. He devoted himself assiduously to building up the Leiden garden with rare plants from the East Indies, America and the Cape. His first publication, 'Horti academici Lugduno-Batavi catalogus', Leiden 1687, was a descriptive catalogue of the plants in the University garden in which many are attractively illustrated, including 34 Cape plants" (Gunn & Codd, Botanical exploration of Southern Africa pp. 26-27)."Paul Hermann was director of the Leiden Botanical garden from 1679-1695. He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants, and one group of his drawings of Ceylon plants, made in the second half of the 17th century, had an interesting history. They were carefully preserved for many years by a series of collectors, one of whom finally brought them to the attention of Linné in 1745. Linné found them so exciting that he based his 'Flora Zeylandica' on them in 1747 ." (Hunt 378). Thousands of specimens from outside the Netherlands were in cultivation towards the end of the century and the garden attained world-wide reknown. The attractive allegorical frontispiece shows the Leiden botanical garden. Bound in … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAN HUYSUM, Jacob (circa 1687-1740)
Signed `J Van Huysum' (lower right). Pencil and watercolour, crowned shield with fleur-de-lys watermark. 19 5/8 x 12 5/8 inches. A fine image of two stems, the longer topped by a mass of small white flowers, the second much shorter showing the black berries. Jacob van Huysum was born in Amsterdam in about 1687, a member of a renowned family of professional flower painters who enjoyed considerable success in Holland. His father was Justus van Huysum (1659-1716), and his brother Jan van Huysum (1682- 1749). Jacob painted in much the same manner as his brother, and as with his brother's work, many of his drawings betray the temperament of an artist rather than that of a botanical illustrator. His 'work, especially in England, has often been mistaken for his brother's. Van Huysum came to England about 1721, in which year he was living in the house of a patron, Mr. Lockyear of the South Sea House. Subsequently he was patronised by Sir Robert Walpole, who received him as an intimate of his house at Chelsea, and employed him to paint flowerpieces... for the decoration of the great house at Houghton in Norfolk' (DNB ). He also provided the majority of the drawings for the 50 illustrations to John Martyn's Historia Plantarum Rariorum (London: 1728-38), as well all the drawings to another work, Catalogus Plantarum.. A catalogue of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers (London: 1730). The present drawing shows the painterly approach where the artist, whilst not sacrificing botanical accuracy, tries to capture the essence of his subject. Fisches, Isaac (Maler) & Heckauer, Leonhard (Stecher).
Augsburg. 1687. - In leuchtenden Farben kolorierter Kupferstich. Sprache: Deutsch Kolorierter Kupferstich. 43 x 30,5 cm. mit dem Text.

GREAT TURKISH WAR].
Lisbon, Na Officina de Miguel Deslandes, 1687. 4°, disbound, in folding marbled cardboard case with calf label. Woodcut vignette of floral basket on title page. Woodcut initial. In good to very good condition. 12 pp., 1 folding engraved map (30 x 38.5 cm.) signed "Duarte fecit." *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this compendium of reports regarding the latest news from the front lines of the war with the Ottoman Empire, as well as events in Venice, Greece, and Dalmatia. The Imperial army was facing the Turks at the border of modern Croatia and Hungary; among the events mentioned are the withdrawal of the Polish army to its headquarters, the loss of the fortresses of Sicklosch and Darda, and the attack on the Bridge of Esseck (Osijek) by the Imperial Army. The map depicts the bridge, the fortresses guarding either end, and the surrounding area, including two branches of the Darva River. The 8-kilometer-long wooden bridge at Osijek, built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1566, was considered one of the wonders of the world. Osijek, in modern Croatia near the Hungarian border, became a Habsburg dominion on 29 September 1687, soon after the Imperial army decisively defeated the Turks at the Battle of Mohács (12 August 1687). Two commanders of the Imperial Army are mentioned: Charles, Duke of Lorraine, and Louis of Baden-Baden, Elector of Bavaria and Margrave. We suspect that this account was compiled slightly before the Battle of Mohacs, a crushing defeat for the Ottoman Empire. Although the locations mentioned are near Mohacs, and the bridge at Osijek played an important role in the … [Click Below for Full Description]
