REDING VON BIBEREGG (Augustin)
(1687) VD17 3614:716800V. [Attributes: First Edition]

Eberhard Werner Happel
"Scarce map of the Western Hemisphere, published by EW Happel in Ulm. From ""Mundus Mirabilis"". It contatins a description of America and describes and dating the manners and customs of the inhabitants. Happel's map shows an incomplete New Zealand, California as an Island on the Briggs model, The straits of Anian and a very nascent and oddly shaped Mississippi River. The Rio Grande is still shown flowing into the Gulf of California. The Straits of Anian are named, with a very promising course for the Northwest Pasasge. Only a single massive Great Lake is shown, with a direct connection with the St. Lawrence River. South America is in an extra wide configuration. The allegorical representations of the 4 continents are male figures, a very unusual departure from the normal convention of representing the continents in the female form. ont> Not Stated : London, 1687 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of this very scarce satire on John Dryden written contemporaneously to his success. Scarce - last seen at auction in 1981. Pages, 12, 20 are misnumbered as called for. ESTC no: R36782 WING: R1206 Collated, complete with the final blank. With the signatures A4, B2, C-E4. This work is a satire on John Dryden, with extracts from his poems. The title references his allegorical poem 'The Hind and the Panther' which is regarded as one of his most controversial. Dryden had converted to Catholicism around the same time as the Catholic monarch James II's accession to the throne in 1685. Many Protestant writers were disgusted by this, particularly as previous poems by Dryden included praise towards Puritan Protectorate Oliver Cromwell. Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' came from Dryden's conversion and he describes the different religious denominations as animals making clear his new stance as a Catholic. This 'Trage-Comedy' is a response to Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' and his revolt against his previous beliefs. The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon'd in the number of the Heathen Gods'. A very scarce work, which provides context to the political and social climate of the seventeenth century. Condition: Disbound, as called for. Externally, smart with just a few light spots to the front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. To A2 there is a small ring mark at the bottom of the page, not affecting the tex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zweite Ausgabe seines 1686 erstmals erschienenen Hauptwerkes. - "In this rare work, König took the unusual step of inserting alchemical symbols for elements in lieu of spellings and compounds throughout the text which aside from the difficulties in reading imparts a bizarre appearance. "Its importance for Alchemy lies in the Appendix to the first part (p. 39-181) where is treated of the writings of Arnaldus, Seton, Morienus, Bernhardus Trevisanus, Basilius Valentinus, Geber, Ripley, Lambspring, Lullius, Paracelsus, Philalethus, etc. The book had already appeared at Basle in 1687 and 1698. Why the book should be so excessively rare is difficult to conjecture, but it is practically certain that no other copy will be offered for sale for many years. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1100 Rare. 23 x 16 cm. 6 pp., 211 pages.; With 1 engraved Portrait and 18 engraved Plates (clean). Contemporary Vellum. Soiled and slightly torn. The first edition of this work. This work is a quarto. The signatures run as A-F4. ESTC citation number R3313. Collated, complete. 'A Discourse For Taking Off the Tests and Penal Laws About Religion' is an interesting working discussing the need to get rid of the test acts and penal laws that were in place in England in the late seventeenth century. The acts and laws were put in place to restrict Roman Catholics, imposing civil disabilities upon them, in an attempt to stop them from practicing their religion, and turn them instead to the Church of England. The author of this work was presumably Catholic, and so had been persecuted for their religion over the course of their life. This was an interesting era for religion in Britain, as James II came to the throne as was a Catholic, as opposed to the previous Church of England monarchs that had previously been at the head of Britain. This is an important and interesting work, as it shows the state of Brit … [Click Below for Full Description]

The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon'd in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

ont> Not Stated : London, 1687. To A2 there is a small ring mark at the bottom of the page, not affecting the text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are brig … [Click Below for Full Description]
