(Kh) Limborch, Philippus Van; Isaac Orobio De Castro; Uriel Acosta
Gouda; Apud Justum Ab Hoeve, 1687. Contemporary Vellum. 4to. [18], 364, [14] pages. 25 cm. First edition. In Latin. De veritate religionis Christianae. A response to three treatises by Balthasar de Orobio, the texts of which are included. With first appearance of "Urielis Acosta Exemplar humanae vitae. Addita est Brevis refutatio argumentorum quibus Acosta omnem religionem revelatam impugnat, par Philippum a Limborch": p. [341] - 364. Written shortly before shooting himself, after his second excommunication, Uriel Acosta ?used the interval to write a few pages of what he called ?Exemplar Humanæ Vitæ? (A Specimen of Human Life) , a sketch of his own career. It is almost the only source of information respecting the life of this eccentric and unfortunate thinker, and was published with a refutation by Philip Limborch, a Dutch theologian, as an appendix to his own work, entitled ?Amica Collatio cum Erudito Judæo, ? Gouda, 1687; republished 1847.? (Jewish Encyclopedia 1906) ?De Castro's discussions on Christianity with the Dutch preacher Philipp von Limborch were published by the latter in the work entitled ?De Veritate Religionis Christianæ Amica Collatio cum Erudito Judæo, ? Amsterdam, 1687.? (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . From the library of Irving Levitas, with laid in letter from the bookseller Emil Offenbacher, addressed to him: ?First Edition. The larger part of the present volume consists of a discussion on the truth of the Christian religion between Philip Van Limborch, a Calvinist minister and professor at Amsterdam (1633 - 1712) and a learned Jew (Isaac Orobio de Castr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vieussens, Raymond
- Lyon, Joannem Certe, 1687, 4°, (12), 348 pages and 9 mostly folded plates, comtemporary calf with spine gold tooled; minor spotting, fine copy. Rare first edition of the Vieussens's first work on anatomy of the heart (well illustrated with 9 folded plate) and nature of the blood. The work is also particulary important for his study on fermentation. - "One of Vieussens' major areas of study was fermentation. He investigated the chemical composition of the blood with great fervor but an equal lack of success. The discovery of an acidic salt in the blood was the source of a long and painful public polemic with the Montpellier professor Pierre Chirac, who claimed to be the first to have extracted this substance from the blood. The priority dispute was particularly unfruitful in that the discovery was erroneous. Nevertheless, until the end of his life Vieussens considered his chemical research on the blood to be his most important work." (DSB) - Even if Vieussens is also famous for his impressive Neurographia published in 1684/85, his major contribution in medicine are in cardiology for which theTractactus are the first steps. - Indeed, published 18/17 years before the better know, Novum vasorum corporis humani systema (1705), this first cardiological work consists the first steps of Vieussens's to his most important contribution in cardiology. - - Tractatus duo. Primus de remotis et proximis mixti principiis in ordine ad corpus humanum spectatis. Secundus de natura, differentiis, subjectis, conditionibus, & causis fermentationis, in quo praecipua, quae in lipsâ fermentationer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lavater, Ludwig.
Lugd. Batav.: Apud Jordanum Luchtmans 12mo (14.2 cm, 5.6"). [8] ff., 313, [1] pp., [3] ff.; 7 fold. plts.. 1687 One of the most famous Post-Reformation works on ghosts and spirits. Lavater, a Swiss Protestant theologian who rejected the Catholic conception of Purgatory, concluded that genuine ghosts were not wandering souls of the dead but rather good or evil angels who came from Heaven or Hell with their own agendas, though some seeming ghosts might actually be apparitions generated by a mad or melancholic mind ? or actual human-perpetrated frauds, of course. First printed in German in 1569 and in Latin in 1570, the work went through a number of editions in both languages as well as French and English translations. The present example is the sixth printing in Latin (stated fourth edition on the title-page), and Brunet describes it as one of the most sought-after editions overall. De spectris is => included in science and medical collections as one of the earliest works to discuss ghostly visions as potential hallucinations and delusions, and is often cited (in the form of its 16th-century English translation, Of Ghostes and Spirites Walking by Nyght) as critical reading for understanding => Shakespeare's ghosts. The volume is => illustrated with an engraved title-page and seven folding copperplates done by Romeyn de Hooghe. The illustrated title is suitably spooky, featuring a witch casting a ritual, surrounded by owls, scorpions, skeletons, a goat-creature, a pipe-smoking rat, a semi-naked broom rider, and a disconcertingly near-faceless, ruff- and cloak-wearing scarecrow … [Click Below for Full Description]

However, following the different editions successively modified of his grammar manual, we can deduce some additional information. In the first of them 'Arte para aprender facilmente a leer, escrivir y en poco tiempo hablar la lengua francesa', where he hid his name under his initials P.B., which was printed in Lyon in 1672(1), he said in the preface that he had been in Madrid for 8 years, so he must have arrived in Madrid in about 1664. However, in 1672, or perhaps the following year, he had to move to Zaragoza to publish this Arte, because in 1673 he published a new book there, already conceptualized and exposed as Gramática (the Grammar manual) and not as Arte , with no mention of having published 'Arte' in Lyon(2). MALPIGHI (Marcello)
GIORDANI, Vitale
Angeli Bernabo 1687 - Rome: Angeli Bernabo, 1687. 4to, pp. [viii, including initial blank leaf], 14, [2, blank] (old shelf-mark on initial blank, small red ink-stamp on title). Contemporary vellum. FIRST EDITION, rare, of this treatise on the mechanics and theories of gravitation of Galileo and Torricelli. This work was part of the effort of the 'Galileans' centred on Borelli and Torricelli, and patronised by Queen Christina, to keep the spirit of the new science alive in the decades following Galileo’s condemnation and death. De componendis gravium is a reply to the Jesuit Giovanni Francesco Vanni’s Specimen de Momentis gravium (Rome, 1684). Vanni attempted to refute the Galilean-Torricellian proposition that the ratio of the components of the weights of a body on an inclined plane and the perpendicular is the same as that of the vertical height and the length of the inclined plane. Giordani demonstrates the correctness of the Galilean-Torricellian proposition by means of four theorems, in which he assumes the Galilean propositions about bodies falling under gravity. Giordani’s work was itself the subject of criticism from the Jesuits, to which he responded a year later in Fundamentum doctrinae motus gravium (Rome, 1688). Giordani (1633-1711) was born in Bitonto in the kingdom of Naples but fled to Venice in 1652 after having killed his brother-in-law. Having learned there of the fleet that Innocent X was preparing to move against the Ottomans, he went to Rome and enlisted. It was during his subsequent military life that he developed an interest in mathemati … [Click Below for Full Description]

France; Maritime Law; Louis XIV, King
1687 - Scarce Pocket-Sized Edition of a Landmark in Maritime Law, Life Insurance and the Discourse of Slavery [France]. [Maritime Law]. [Colbert, Jean-Baptiste (1619-1683)]. Louis XIV, King [1643-1715]. Ordonnance de Louis XIV. Roy de France et de Navarre, Donnee a Fontainebleau au Mois d'Aoust 1681. Touchant la Marine. Paris: Chez Denys Thierry, Et Christophle Ballard, 1687. [viii], 374, [2] pp. 16mo. (4" x 2"). Contemporary calf, gilt spine with raised bands, brass clasps, gilt fillets to boards edges. Considerable wear to spine ends and corners, joints starting at ends, a few ink spots to edges of text block, portion of early owner bookplate to front pastedown, later owner bookplate to front free endpaper. Light toning to text, negligible foxing to a few leaves, clean tear to leaf G (pp. 97-98), early repair to fore and bottom-edges of leaf R4 (pp 263-264). Early owner signatures to front free endpaper and title page, interior otherwise clean. * Fourth edition, published the same year as a quarto. With a glossary of terms. Written by Colbert for Louis XIV, the Ordonnance of 1681 is significant as the first modern maritime code and a landmark in the history of insurance. As a clear exposition of maritime insurance it soon became a standard reference. More important, Articles 9, 10 and 11 appear to be the first published statement on life insurance. It describes circumstances in which lives may be insured to deal with situations unique to passengers, crews and slaves, most notably capture for ransom. This distinction was exploited initially by dealers in the slave trade, b … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEULEN, Johannes van (1654-1715)
Amsterdam: Johannis van Keulen, 1687. Copper engraved map, period hand colouring. Sheet size: 21 1/8 x 24 1/4 inches. An attractive map with an inset of Charleston Harbour, the mouths of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers and showing the settlement before it was moved from the west bank of the Ashley. This copy in Burden's second state, with period hand colouring. An excellent copy of Burden's second state with the number '18' engraved at the lower left corner. Burden notes that the cartographer C.J. Vooght draws on unpublished sources for this map, but that the "southern regions still call upon old Spanish nomenclature ... The immediate Carolina coastline is ... compressed on a northerly axis and does not utilise the advances made in the Second Lords Proprietors map of 1682 ... The more southerly of the Outer Bank sounds differ from earlier depictions and Cape Hatteras is less prominent also. The soundings off the more northerly Outer Banks are from an unknown but presumably English source" (Burden). KEULEN, Johannes van (1654-1715)
Amsterdam: Johannes van Keulen, 1687. Copper-engraved map, full contemporary hand-colouring, heightened with gold. A very fine copy of this excellent and very early chart of Suriname: the area that the Dutch accepted in lieu of New York. This beautifully-finished map was published by innovative Dutch cartographer and publisher Johannes van Keulen in the 1687 second edition of the third volume his Sea-Atlas [or Zee-Fakkel ]. The chart concentrates on coastal Suriname, with the site of the capital identified as Starrenbergh Para Maribo t' fort Zeelandia. To the left is the Rio Marrawini (the river Maroni or Marowijne) which forms the border with French Guiana. The map shows the area less than 20 years after the Dutch had agreed to forego any claims to New Amsterdam and its surroundings in North America, in exchange for the English relinquishing their claims to Guyana or Suriname. KEULEN, Johannes van (1654-1715)
Amsterdam: Johannes van Keulen, 1687. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. Van Keulen's 17th century chart of the Maritime Canada, here with period hand-colouring. This map accurately depicts the Grand Banks, though is somewhat more fanciful regarding the coasts of Newfoundland, Labrador and Nova Scotia, indicative of the Dutch charts of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in this early period. This chart appeared in editions of both Van Keulen's Zee-Fakkel and Zee-Atlas . The present copy is an example of Burden's second state (of 4), with the page number in the lower left corner but without a shoal added to the coastline of Nova Scotia.
