Pages, 12, 20 are misnumbered as called for. ESTC no: R36782 WING: R1206 Collated, complete with the final blank. With the signatures A4, B2, C-E4. This work is a satire on John Dryden, with extracts from his poems. The title references his allegorical poem 'The Hind and the Panther' which is regarded as one of his most controversial. Dryden had converted to Catholicism around the same time as the Catholic monarch James II's accession to the throne in 1685. Many Protestant writers were disgusted by this, particularly as previous poems by Dryden included praise towards Puritan Protectorate Oliver Cromwell. Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' came from Dryden's conversion and he describes the different religious denominations as animals making clear his new stance as a Catholic. This 'Trage-Comedy' is a response to Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' and his revolt against his previous beliefs. The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shadwell had close association with Dryden throughout his career. The two worked together on 'True Widow' for which Dryden produced a prologue. However, a once cordial relationship turned sour when Dryden joined the court party and published 'Absalom and Achitophel'. Shadwell made an attack in the form of 'The Medal of John Bayes' which brought Dryden's retort of representing Shadwell as Mac Flecknoe. In addition to this Dryden contributed to Nahum Tate's continuation of Absalom and Achitophel with Shadwell as Og. To this translation of Juvenal's 10th Satire Shadwell answers these attacks. Tho Shadwell
ont> D Mallet : London, 1687 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of Thomas Shadwell's translation of Juvenal's tenth satire. A very scarce work, which includes a commentary by Shadwell. First thus, the first edition of this particular translation. Published by D Mallet. There was another copy published the same year by Gabriel Collins mis-dated 1678, no authority between the two is established. ESTC No. R22449. Register is continuous despite pagination not including a page 40-41. With the register A-H4. Collated, complete. With the errata to H4r. Thomas Shadwell was the poet laureate in 1689. In Latin and in English. With Shadwell's commentary. With a dedication in English to Sir Charles Sidley. A very scarce work, which conveys Shadwell and Dryden's public attacks on each other, through a translation of Juvenal's poem. A fascinating, and typical way of dispute in the seventeenth century was by publishing tracts and satirical poems. Condition: Disbound. Externall … [Click Below for Full Description]

ont> Not Stated : London, 1687. The first edition of this very scarce satire on John Dryden written contemporaneously to his success. Scarce - last seen at auction in 1981. The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon'd in the number of the Heathen Gods'. A very scarce work, which provides context to the political and social climate of the seventeenth century. Condition: Disbound, as called for. Externally, smart with just a few light spots to the front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. To A2 there is a small ring mark at the bottom of the page, not affecting the text. [Félibien, André]; Johanna Sibylla Küsel Krauss & Johann Ulrich Krauss, engr.
Augsburg: Johann Ulrich Krauss (pr. by Jacob Koppmayer), 1687. Folio (31.8 cm, 12.52"). [8], 129, [13] pp.; 8 double plts., illus. (2 illus. ff. lacking). German and French Baroque: This sumptuous illustrated presentation of Charles Le Brun's tapestry designs for Louis XIV, accompanied by explanations in prose and poetry, marks the work's first bilingual appearance — following its initial French publication of 1668 — as well as the first publication under the imprint of Johann Ulrich Krauss, who had taken over his father-in-law's printmaking and publishing business not long before. Working on royal commission, Le Brun created eight elaborate renderings for two sets of allegorical tapestries comprising the four elements and the four seasons, which were then woven at => the Gobelins Manufactory. In addition to the added copper-engraved main title-page here, there is a special engraved sectional title for each main set. Each design (Fire, Air, Water, Earth; Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) has its own section featuring a double-page spread with accompanying letterpress description in both French and German, followed by individual close-ups of the emblems from the borders (done from miniature paintings by Jacques Bailly), each with a brief prose explanation followed by verse in both languages. The prose was written by Félibien, secretary to the French Royal Academy, while many of the poems were written by => Charles Perrault with others by François Charpentier, Jean Chapelin, and Jacques Cassagnes; the German throughout is printed in blackletter, the French prose in roman, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

He shows respect for Confucian learning and, like Matteo Ricci, secularizes it and seems to have considered it compatible with Christianity, against the mainstream Jesuit view. Chapter VIII of part 1 gives an account of the trade and seaports, making it an important source for the history of the region's commercial relations with China and Japan. With an early owner's inscription on the title-page and occasional manuscript notes. Lacking the last leaf, containing the privilege, and with an excision on the title-page restored (probably to remove a library stamp) and two quires slightly browned, but otherwise in good condition. Rare first French edition of an essential source for any study of Southeast Asia.

SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM
London: Printed by J. B[ennet]. for J. Hindmarsh, 1687. First Ravenscroft Edition, Fourth Quarto Edition. In this revised version of Shakespeare's bloodiest play, cited as the first work to question Shakespeare's authorship, Edward Ravenscroft 'improves' upon the Bard's "most incorrect and indigested piece in all his Works" boasting that if you "compare the old play with this, you'll finde that none in all that author's works ever receiv'd greater alterations or additions, the language not only refin'd but many scenes entirely new; besides most of the principal characters heighten'd, and the plot much encreas'd." Ravenscroft (fl. 1671-97) is nothing if not proud of himself for having brought Shakespeare to a new level of elegance, saying that the play in its original form "seem[ed] rather a heap of rubbish than a structure." While there are changes of many kinds--perhaps the most memorable modification has Aaron being consumed by flames at the play's end--the main storyline remains the same: it is a tale of revenge between Tamara, Queen of the Goths, and Titus, a general in the Roman army, with the central event being the brutal rape of Titus' daughter Lavinia by Tamara's two sons. Ravenscroft caused both controversy and resentment (particularly from Dryden) at the way he boldly tampered with Shakespeare and then openly admired the results; yet the adaptation proved a theatrical success and continued to be staged well into the first quarter of the 18th century. This edition is also of interest for its suggestion that "Titus" was not wholly the work of Shakespeare, believed … [Click Below for Full Description]
