It provides evidence from Dryden that his conversion was spiritual and not political, as many assumed. This work was published simultaneously with a Dublin edition of the same year. One was distributed by Halley and Newton themselves through a number of unnamed booksellers, the other was largely turned over to Samuel Smith for distribution on the Continent (as here). This Continental issue is considerably rarer. The Principia clarifies the universal physical laws of gravitation and motion which underpin phenomena described by Newton's predecessors Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. He establishes the mathematical basis for the motion of bodies in unresisting space (the law of inertia), the motion of fluids and the effect of friction on bodies moving through fluids, and sets forth the law of universal gravitation and its unifying role in the cosmos. BIBLE.]
London, R. Everingham for R. Bentley and J. Hindmarsh, 1687. Small 8vo, pp. [1018], with an engraved additional title; bound without the Apocrypha (see below); manuscript hymns in German in an early hand on two blank leaves at end; contemporary English black morocco richly gilt, covers tooled with an attractive all-over design of drawer-handles, pansies and leaves, comb-marbled endleaves, gilt edges; minor wear, corners a little bumped, one or two tiny areas of retouching.First complete edition of the Bible in French to be printed in England, in a fine Restoration binding. This Bible, in the French Geneva version, was published less than two years after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (22 October 1685) which saw about 50,000 French Protestant refugees move to England (the word 'refugee' entered the English language at this time). The present copy is without the Apocrypha sometimes found at the end of the Old Testament (as is the Bible Society copy; see Darlow & Moule). For a comparable binding, also apparently employing the same distinctive pansy tool used here, see Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles, part I, 1987, no. 95. [Click Below for Full Description]

HENRY VIII
London: Printed by Nath. Thompson, 1687. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. 203 x 150 mm. (8 x 5 7/8"). 15 p.l., 133, [3] (ads) pp. Translated from the Latin by Thomas Webster. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Pleasing modern black polished calf by Fred Shihadeh, covers with blind-stamped frame, raised bands, red morocco label. Wing H-1468; ESTC R411. Half a dozen quires a bit browned (due to paper quality), occasional minor foxing, but an excellent copy internally, clean and crisp, in a new sympathetic binding. In a well-executed and attractive amateur binding, this is the first English translation of King Henry VIII's 1521 defense of the Seven Sacraments, the book that won him the title "Defender of the Faith" from Pope Leo X. A response to Luther's "95 Theses," the "Assertio" rebukes the Reformation for reducing the number of Sacraments to two (Communion and Baptism) and argues for the merits of the other five Sacraments--Confession, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, and Extreme Unction--as well as for the use of indulgences and for the authority of the pope. It was begun by Henry in 1519, and was likely composed with the assistance of the learned and devout Sir Thomas More. Our volume includes translations of Henry's letter dedicating the work to Pope Leo, John Clarke's Oration exhibiting the "Assertio" to the pope, Leo X's response, and the papal bull awarding Henry "that most Illustrious, Splendid, and most Christian-like Title of Defender of the Faith." This title is uncommon in the marketplace: ABPC and RBH find just four other copies at auction in the past 40 years.

THO SHADWELL
ont> D Mallet : London, 1687 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of Thomas Shadwell's translation of Juvenal's tenth satire. A very scarce work, which includes a commentary by Shadwell. First thus, the first edition of this particular translation. Published by D Mallet. There was another copy published the same year by Gabriel Collins mis-dated 1678, no authority between the two is established. ESTC No. R22449. Register is continuous despite pagination not including a page 40-41. With the register A-H4. Collated, complete. With the errata to H4r. Thomas Shadwell was the poet laureate in 1689. Shadwell had close association with Dryden throughout his career. The two worked together on 'True Widow' for which Dryden produced a prologue. However, a once cordial relationship turned sour when Dryden joined the court party and published 'Absalom and Achitophel'. Shadwell made an attack in the form of 'The Medal of John Bayes' which brought Dryden's retort of representing Shadwell as Mac Flecknoe. In addition to this Dryden contributed to Nahum Tate's continuation of Absalom and Achitophel with Shadwell as Og. To this translation of Juvenal's 10th Satire Shadwell answers these attacks. In Latin and in English. With Shadwell's commentary. With a dedication in English to Sir Charles Sidley. A very scarce work, which conveys Shadwell and Dryden's public attacks on each other, through a translation of Juvenal's poem. A fascinating, and typical way of dispute in the seventeenth century was by publishing tracts and satirical poems. Condition: Disbound. Externall … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Félibien, André]; Johanna Sibylla Küsel Krauss & Johann Ulrich Krauss, engr.
Johann Ulrich Krauss (pr. by Jacob Koppmayer), 1687. German and French Baroque: This sumptuous illustrated presentation of Charles Le Brun's tapestry designs for Louis XIV, accompanied by explanations in prose and poetry, marks the work's first bilingual appearance -- following its initial French publication of 1668 -- as well as the first publication under the imprint of Johann Ulrich Krauss, who had taken over his father-in-law's printmaking and publishing business not long before. Working on royal commission, Le Brun created eight elaborate renderings for two sets of allegorical tapestries comprising the four elements and the four seasons, which were then woven at => the Gobelins Manufactory. In addition to the added copper-engraved main title-page here, there is a special engraved sectional title for each main set. Each design (Fire, Air, Water, Earth; Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) has its own section featuring a double-page spread with accompanying letterpress description in both French and German, followed by individual close-ups of the emblems from the borders (done from miniature paintings by Jacques Bailly), each with a brief prose explanation followed by verse in both languages. The prose was written by Félibien, secretary to the French Royal Academy, while many of the poems were written by => Charles Perrault with others by François Charpentier, Jean Chapelin, and Jacques Cassagnes; the German throughout is printed in blackletter, the French prose in roman, and the French verse in italic. => The text is not only illustrated as above but decorated with a nu … [Click Below for Full Description]
