ALENCE, Joachim d'
Amsterdam: chez Henry Wetstein, 1687. First edition. First edition of this beautifully illustrated treatise on the magnet and its uses, dealing with the invention of the compass, magnetic mountains in America, declination and the orientation of the compass-needle in a magnetic field. The plates are etchings by Adriaan Schoonebeek (1658-1705), the pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe and a prolific book-illustrator. They recall Sébastien Le Clerc's Pratique de la geometrie (Paris, 1669), where geometrical diagrams float above fanciful landscapes. In D'Alencé's plates, however, though most of the landscapes and rustic scenes seem unrelated to the scientific content, one or two provide a commentary. For example, fig. 18, illustrated by Hofer, shows a violent explosion with bodies flying in all directions, which Hofer suggests illustrates the magnet's potential. The finely engraved frontispiece is described by Park Benjamin, in his Intellectual Rise in Electricity (London, 1895), as follows. "The lodestone, disposed in a bowl after the mode suggested by Neckam and Peregrinus, and marked with a longitudinal directing line, appears floating in front of the vessel, which the mariner, holding a rudder in one hand and a compass in the other, is about to board. The goddess, who appears to be advising him, points to the Great Bear, represented by the actual animal in the heavens, with the Pole Star situated at its tail, and also to a compass and a dipping needle, while in her left hand she has a sounding line. The idea evidently intended is that the divinity is advising the sailor to avail himse … [Click Below for Full Description]

MALPIGHI (Marcello)
[Click Below for Full Description]

CHAUCER
1687. CHAUCER, Geoffrey. The Works of Our Ancient, Learned, & Excellent English Poet, Jeffrey Chaucer… To which is adjoyn'd, The Story of the Siege of Thebes, by John Lidgate, Monk of Bury. Together with the Life of Chaucer. London: [no publisher, probably John Harefinch], 1687. Folio, period style full brown calf, elaborately decorated spines and boards, red morocco spine label, raised bands. $6500.Third Speght edition of Chaucer's works, the last edition to be set in Gothic type, with engraved frontispiece “Progeny of Chaucer,” incorporating a full-length portrait of the author and an image of his tomb. A beautiful volume in period-style calf-gilt.“Except for Shakespeare, Chaucer is foremost among writers in the English language” (Bloom, The Western Canon, 105). This third printing of Thomas Speght's edition, which “held sway for well over a hundred years, far longer than any other. It was the text read and owned by Milton, Junius, Pepys, Dryden, and Pope” (Derek Pearsall). This edition marks a highspot of Chaucerian editorship; after it, editorial quality declined, and did not revive until the 1775 Tyrwhitt edition of the Canterbury Tales. This edition is essentially a reprint of Speght's 1602 edition, being the eighth collected edition, and includes for the first time the printing of the conclusions to the Cook's and the Squire's Tale, then recently discovered, on the verso of the last leaf. The list of “Old and Obscure Words in Chaucer explained” is here marked with derivations, and a glossary has been added translating the Latin and French “not Englished” by Chau … [Click Below for Full Description]

Recueil Historique de la Vie et des Ouvrages des Plus Célebres Architectes [Collected History of the Lives and Works of the Most Celebrated Architects]. Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1687. Quarto, contemporary full speckled brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label. $1500.First edition of this foundational early French history of architecture and architects from ancient times to 14th-century Europe by leading 17th-century French scholar Félibien des Avaux, an especially handsome wide-margined copy, most rare in contemporary calf. This rare first edition of Félibien des Avaux’s major architectural History reflects his high esteem as one of the 17th-century’s leading architectural scholars. The son of André Felibien, who was court historian to Louis XIV of France and the first secretary of the Académy d’Architecture, Jean François Félibien here highlights defining architectural landmarks in a “collection of biographies of architects… extending from Antiquity up to the 14th century, compiled entirely from earlier literature’ (Kruft, 138). Featured are Egyptian, Babylonian and African masterpieces and craftsmen, landmarks of Greek and Roman architecture, and architectural masterworks of 13th- and 14th-century Europe. “Sebastien Cramoisy, whose device is on the title page, became the first director of the ‘Imprimerie Royale’ in 1640… The headpieces were engraved by Cornelis Vermeulen” (Fowler 119). Eberhard Werner Happel
"Scarce map of the Western Hemisphere, published by EW Happel in Ulm. From ""Mundus Mirabilis"". It contatins a description of America and describes and dating the manners and customs of the inhabitants. Happel's map shows an incomplete New Zealand, California as an Island on the Briggs model, The straits of Anian and a very nascent and oddly shaped Mississippi River. The Rio Grande is still shown flowing into the Gulf of California. The Straits of Anian are named, with a very promising course for the Northwest Pasasge. Only a single massive Great Lake is shown, with a direct connection with the St. Lawrence River. South America is in an extra wide configuration. The allegorical representations of the 4 continents are male figures, a very unusual departure from the normal convention of representing the continents in the female form. Copperplate, good condition." Burden 627; M … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: printed for Jacob Tonson,, 1687. Quarto (206 x 165 mm). Recent wrappers, titles to spine and front in manuscript. Housed in a red morocco pull-off case and red moiré silk chemise. Bookplate of Bernardine Murphy to chemise. Washed, trimmed a little close but never cropped, three chips to leaf of licence, lower and outer margins of final leaf restored with one word of text in facsimile and one word lost from advertisements leaf to verso. Good condition. First edition, first issue, with the preliminary Leaf of Licence and no errata on p.145. Rare, only two copies of the first edition have appeared at auction in the past 24 years. The Hind and the Panther was a series of fables attempting to bring together Anglican and Catholic political interests (the Catholic Church being the Hind, the Church of England the Panther), whilst still supporting Catholic doctrine, to which Dryden himself had converted more or less simultaneously with the accession of the Catholic King James II to the throne in 1685. The poem elicited great controversy for obvious reasons, but is now remembered as a poetic masterpiece, praised by Samuel Johnson, who noted that it was "written with great smoothness of metre, a wide extent of knowledge, and an abundant multiplicity of images; the controversy is embellished with pointed sentences, diversified by illustrations, and enlivened by sallies of invective", William Hazlitt, who thought it had "more genius, vehemence and strength of description than any other of Dryden's works", and more recently the critic Margaret Doody, who praised The Hind and the … [Click Below for Full Description]
