Behn, Aphra (1640-89); Aesop (ca. 620-564 B.C.); Barlow, Francis (1626?-1702)
Printed by H. Hills jun. for Francis Barlow, and are to be sold by Chr. Wilkinson at the Black-boy against St. Dunstan?s Church in Fleet-street, Tho. Fox in Westminster-hall, and Henry Faithorne at the Rose in St. Paul?s Church-yard,, London, 1687. Folio: [8], 40; 40; 17, 2-221, [3] p. COLLATION: ?1(printed title), a2, B-L2; B-L2, B-Z2, Aa-Zz2, Aaa-Ppp2. With Verses by Aphra Behn. A Fantastic, Large-Paper Copy For this second edition of his magnificent production, Barlow commissioned Aphra Behn, then at the height of her popularity as a playwright and poet, to write verses to be engraved on the 110 plates illustrating the fables. In order to substitute Behn?s verses for those of Thomas Philipot (d. 1682), the lower area of the plate needed to be burnished down and the new verses engraved onto the plate in place of the earlier ones. ?The workman doing the burnishing feared damaging the bottom border of the design above the verse: in many places traces of the tops of the letters in Philipot?s top lines remain. In a few instances a small new plate for the new verse had to be inserted.?(Hodnett)For each of the 110 illustrations Behn composed a quatrain summarizing the fable and added an additional moralizing couplet. Her fame was such that Barlow needed to include only a succinct notice of Behn?s authorship in his letter ?To the Reader?:?The Ingenious Mrs. A. Behn has been so obliging as to perform the English Poetry, which in short comprehends the Sense of the Fable and Moral: Whereof to say much were needless, since it may sufficiently recommend it self to all Persons of Unde … [Click Below for Full Description]

THEVENOT, Jean de.
London printed by H. Clark for H. Faithorne J. Adamson C. Skegnes and T. Newborough booksellers in St. Paul's Church-Yard 1687 - First English edition. 3 parts in 1, folio (20.5 x 33 cm) [38], 291, [3], 108, 105-200, [2], 93, [1], 91-114, [4]pp., with an engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 engraved plates, each part with separate title-page, modern calf antique, red morocco lettering piece, gilt spine, occasional light marginal damp-stains, excellent copy. "Thevenot's travels mark the beginning of the grand epoch of travel and exploration in the Levant" (Blackmer). Thevenot began his travels in the Levant in 1655, returning to Paris in 1659 to prepare the first part of his description of his journeys for publication, which describe Constantinople, the Archipelago, Asia Minor, and Egypt. He left Paris in 1663 and travelled through Syria and Persia to India, dying near Tabriz in 1667. During his time in central India, he "systematically sought information on other parts of the Mughal Empire from native informants and other itinerant Europeans . because Thevenot was a tireless observer and researcher he provides occasional new materials in his systematic surveys of the imperial provinces . tucked into these methodical paragraphs are occasional sidelights and acute observations which are novel" (Lach, III, p.807). Together with the Life of the most Illustrious Monarch Almanzor. And of the Several Revolutions of the Mighting Empire of the Caliphs, and of the African Kingdoms. Composed in Arabick by Abulcacim Tariff Abentariq, one of the Generals in that Spanish Expedition; and Translated into Spanish. Now made English. Octavo (186 x 110 mm). First edition in English of the first part (all published) of Miguel de Luna's Verdadera historia del rey Don Rodrigo (1592-1600), itself purportedly translated from an Arabic source, but in fact an original composition. Luna's account of the Arab conquest of Spain to the year 761 was considered genuine by Southey, dismissed by George Ticknor and other scholars as a forgery, and is now appreciated as an important, essentially literary document from the age of Cervantes, who knew the work. The Verdadera historia and Don Quixote (1605-1615) "abound with the same phrases and diction", and Cervantes specifically ridicules a passage in Luna in wh … [Click Below for Full Description]

DELLON, Charles Gabriel]
A Leyde; chez Daniel Gaasbeek; marchand libraire, 1687. small 8vo., (8) + 220pp., small marginal defect in one leaf (C4) with loss of letters from running headline and 3 or 4 letters of text on verso, in 19th century quarter calf over marbled boards, spine fully gilt and lettered, marbled edges. A good, crisp, copy. First edition. Charles Gabriel Dellon (1649-1709) was a French Catholic physician and traveller in the East Indies. After a dispute with the Governor of Daman in 1673, Dellon was arrested and sent to Portuguese Goa to face the Inquisition. In 1677, after two years of torture and five years of galley service, Dellon successfully appealed his case before the Grand Tribunal in Lisbon and was released. His account here is a vivid portrait of the Inquisition in Goa and went through several later editions. The Goa Inquisition was the office of the Portuguese Inquisition acting in Portuguese India, and in the rest of the Portuguese empire in Asia. It was established in 1560, briefly suppressed from 1774 to 1778, and finally abolished in 1812. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Vieussens, Raymond
Lyon, Joannem Certe, 1687, 4, (12), 348 pages and 9 mostly folded plates, comtemporary calf with spine gold tooled minor spotting, fine copy. Rare first edition of the Vieussens's first work on anatomy of the heart (well illustrated with 9 folded plate) and nature of the blood. The work is also particulary important for his study on fermentation. "One of Vieussens' major areas of study was fermentation. He investigated the chemical composition of the blood with great fervor but an equal lack of success. The discovery of an acidic salt in the blood was the source of a long and painful public polemic with the Montpellier professor Pierre Chirac, who claimed to be the first to have extracted this substance from the blood. The priority dispute was particularly unfruitful in that the discovery was erroneous. Nevertheless, until the end of his life Vieussens considered his chemical research on the blood to be his most important work." (DSB) Even if Vieussens is also famous for his impressive Neurographia published in 1684/85, his major contribution in medicine are in cardiology for which theTractactus are the first steps. Indeed, published 18/17 years before the better know, Novum vasorum corporis humani systema (1705), this first cardiological work consists the first steps of Vieussens's to his most important contribution in cardiology.Tractatus duo. Primus de remotis et proximis mixti principiis in ordine ad corpus humanum spectatis. Secundus de natura, differentiis, subjectis, conditionibus, & causis fermentationis, in quo praecipua, quae in lipsâ fermentationer observantur … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Bound up with:) Continuatio Epistolarum, datarum ad longe Celeberrimam Regiam Societatem Londinensem. Lugduni Batavorum, apud Cornelium Boutestein, Bibliopolam, 1689. pp. (8), 124, with 10 (some folding) engraved plates and 2 text engravings. Contemporary vellum. A very interesting association copy from the library of Karl Ernst von Baer. Our copy agrees with the collation of Dobell no. 22 and 24. The 'Anatomia seu interiora rerum' contains the following letters 28-31, 34-36, 38, 42-52 and the 'Continuatio Epistolarum' letters 53-60. All letters are in the first issue of the first Latin edition apart from letters 38, 42, and 43 which are in the second issue. The first issue of these letters was published in 1685 (see Dobell 21) and is excessively rare and Dobell comments that that his copy of the first issue is the only one he has seen. Letters 32, 33, 37, 39, 40, 41 were published as late as 1695. Leeuwenhoek published 165 letters numbered 28-146 and I-XLVI, the first 27 were not published. //Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek's letters, sent to the Royal Society of London or to its secretary Robert Hooke, were written in Dutch, and their first printing, from 1673 on, in the Philosophical Transactions, was in translation and in an abridged form.
