[LOKEREN, J.B. van].
Cf. STCN 314938338 (one incompl. copy of other Venlo ed.); cf. Van Heurck, Les livres pop. flamandes, p. 124. Only copy located of a rare, popular religious educational schoolbook for Catholic youth in the Southern Netherlands. It perfectly mirrors the Flemish Catholic society at the beginning of the 18th century. The book is ascribed to J.B. van Lokeren, parish priest at Wynghene in Flanders from 1687 till his death in 1731. The children are taught how to behave at school, in church and at home, what to wear, their duties as a child, a Catholic, a civilian, etc. The book also includes songs and prayers, as well as advices to priests, teachers and parents on how to treat their pupils, and how to treat old, sick, and dying people. First published in 1718 the book stayed in use till far in the 19th century. Van Heurck lists 12 editions from 1719 till about 1845 and the STCN records 8 editions all with only 1 or 2 copies located.Lacking the last two leaves, title-page somewhat soiled. Disbound.

D.B. (David Burton - pseudonym for Nathaniel Crouch)
D.B. (Nathaniel Vrouch), London 1687 - Book. Leather bound 12 octavo booklet. This copy contains the very rare frontispiece which is usually missing (missing in BL copy for example) because readers of the time would have removed it for political reasons and/or eighteenth-century engraving collectors would have clipped it for their collections. Top left corner missing from the image, closed tear to bottom. Graffiti (handwriting practice) throughout publication from the period, general wear and age throughout. Some loose pages, missing colophon but this can be dated as 1687 (third edition) the next edition would not have the James II image because of the revolution. Other images of Kings and Queens throughout from William to the Edwards and Henrys, Charles I & II, Elizabeth etc. The image of James I on p205 missing lower half. Other condition notes - pp72-95 missing. Very good with some pages missing but including rare James II frontispiece. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[DELLON, Charles Gabriel]
A Leyde; chez Daniel Gaasbeek; marchand libraire. 1687. small 8vo., (8) + 220pp., small marginal defect in one leaf (C4) with loss of letters from running headline and 3 or 4 letters of text on verso, in 19th century quarter calf over marbled boards, spine fully gilt and lettered, marbled edges. A good, crisp, copy. First edition. Charles Gabriel Dellon (1649-1709) was a French Catholic physician and traveller in the East Indies. After a dispute with the Governor of Daman in 1673, Dellon was arrested and sent to Portuguese Goa to face the Inquisition. In 1677, after two years of torture and five years of galley service, Dellon successfully appealed his case before the Grand Tribunal in Lisbon and was released. His account here is a vivid portrait of the Inquisition in Goa and went through several later editions. The Goa Inquisition was the office of the Portuguese Inquisition acting in Portuguese India, and in the rest of the Portuguese empire in Asia. It was established in 1560, briefly suppressed from 1774 to 1778, and finally abolished in 1812.

Chardin, [Jean].
1687. 8vo. 2 vols. (24), 438 pp. 439, (9) pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece, additional engr. title, folding engr. map and 15 engr. plates (12 folding). Contemp. French full calf with giltstamped spines. Edges sprinkled in red. Second French edition of Chardin's account of his travels in Persia and India. Includes extracts from the Qur'an (sura 26) as well as Muslim religious chants extolling the greatness of the Prophet and the city of Mecca. The French traveller Jean Chardin (1643-1713) had spent the years 1665-70 and 1671-77 in the Middle East and is considered the most knowledgeable westerner of his period with regard to Persian geography and customs (cf. Henze). "He apparently knew Esfahan better than Paris and visited nearly every part of the country. His account of the Persian court and his business transactions with the shah are of considerable interest" (Howgego). "The son of a jeweller, Chardin first went to the Levant in 1665 in order to purchase gems. He made a second journey there in 1671, spending much time in the company of the artist Guillaume Grelot, whom he met in Constantinople and whose drawings inspired the engravings in the present work. Chardin's acute observations and valuable insights into oriental life were highly praised by Montesquieu, Rousseau, Gibbon and Helvetius, all of whom drew on his work in their own writings" (Atabey 218). Persecuted as a Protestant, Chardin settled in London in 1681 and was appointed jeweller to the Royal Court. His journal, originally written in French, was first published in an English translation (London, 1686); t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brandt, Gerard.
Voor Wolfgang, Waasberge, Boom, van Someren en Goethals, 1687. First edition monograph on the life and exploits of Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607-76), an accomplished and beloved Dutch admiral who served in the Navy from 1637 until his death from cannonball injuries sustained in battle. Sailing the Baltic and Mediterranean seas, and voyaging to => South America, Greenland, Mauritius, Portugal, Guinea, and the West Indies, M.A. de Ruyter valiantly fought the English, curbed piracy, and freed Christian slaves along the way. In 1673 he was promoted to Lieutenant Admiral General of Holland and West Friesland, which is the title used to describe him here. His biographer, Geeraert Brandt (1626-85), was an accomplished Dutch writer of poetry and prose, best known for this and his other historical works. The text is in Dutch and occasional Latin, printed in roman and italic with sidenotes, handsome woodcut initials and tailpieces, and a large woodcut printers' device on the title-page. Although a number of plates have been removed, this copy retains two full-page engravings by Sebastiaen Stoopendael and one by Joseph Mulder, respectively: the => added title-page printed chez P. & J. Blaeu; a portrait of the Admiral; and an illustration of his grand tomb at the New Church in Amsterdam. A transcription of his epitaph in Latin is found on the next page, followed by a section of "Gedichten" (poems) in the Admiral's honor composed by the author and illustrious contemporaries.
