GERVAISE (Nicolas)

The French traveller Jean Chardin (1643-1713) had spent the years 1665-70 and 1671-77 in the Middle East and is considered the most knowledgeable westerner of his period with regard to Persian geography and customs (cf. Henze). "He apparently knew Esfahan better than Paris and visited nearly every part of the country. His account of the Persian court and his business transactions with the shah are of considerable interest" (Howgego). "The son of a jeweller, Chardin first went to the Levant in 1665 in order to purchase gems. He made a second journey there in 1671, spending much time in the company of the artist Guillaume Grelot, whom he met in Constantinople and whose drawings inspired the engravings in the present work. Chardin's acute observations and valuable insights into oriental life were highly praised by Montesquieu, Rousseau, Gibbon and Helvetius, all of whom drew on his work in their own writings" (Atabey 218). Persecuted as a Protestant, Chardin settled in London in 1681 and was appointed jeweller to the Royal Court. His journal, originally written in French, was first published in an English transla … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aesop's Fables, or the Aesopica, is a collection of fables credited to Aesop, a slave and storyteller believed to have lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BC. The fables originally belonged to the oral tradition and were not collected for some three centuries after Aesop's death. By that time a variety of other stories, jokes and proverbs were being ascribed to him, although some of that material was from sources earlier than him or came from beyond the Greek cultural sphere. The process of inclusion has continued until the present, with some of the fables unrecorded before the later Middle Ages and others arriving from outside Europe. Chaucer Geoffrey
London np 1687. The third Speght edition, and the last 'black letter' edition of Chaucer's works. With the famous engraved Gower portrait and genealogical frontispiece, engraved coat of arms at the beginning of the works and with woodcut initials throughout. Folio, full antique calf, the spine sometime restored to correct period style with raised bands ruled in double gilt and with a red morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. (36), 660, (24) pp. A very handsome copy, internally quite clean and still crisp, a bit of expected mellowing or age evidence, the binding handsome with some expert restoration as noted. A nice, tall copy of this important work. A SCARCE, HANDSOME AND IMPORTANT EDITION. This was the last 'black letter' edition of Chaucer to be published. Thomas Speght included in this edition "The Court of Love," added to the Chaucer canon by Stow in 1561, as well as four new pieces: "The Flower and the Leaf;" "Chaucer's Dream;" "Jacke Upland" (spuriously attributed to Chaucer); and "Chaucer's A B C." The text of the Tales follows that of the 1602 edition, but with the addition of the then recently rediscovered endings of the Cook's and the Squire's tales. There is also a twenty-four page Glossary, "The Old and Obscure Words Explained", at the end of the volume. This copy with fine provenance, with the engraved bookplate of Oliver Huckel, published author and authority on Richard Wagner. Huckel was the translator into English of such works as 'Tannhauser' and 'Parsifal'. With the plate of the Brooklyn Public Library (now deaccessioned) noting it was purchased with the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Circumnavigation] Cubero, Sebastian Pedro
First complete edition, and first edition of the second part. Cubero's was the first circumnavigation performed eastwards, first making his way from Europe to Asia, then America -through Mexico and Cuba- and finally back to Europe. Cubero (ca. 1645 - ca. 1697) was a Spanish Priest and missionary, he studied humanities, philosophy and theology; in 1671 the Congregation of Propagande Fidesent him as an Apostolic Preacher to Asia and the East Indies, mission during which he would travel largely across Russia (Moscow), Turkey (Istanbul), Armenia, Persia, etc., making his way to Goa and Madras. In Malacca he would be detained by the Dutch for a short period of time, after which he journeyed once more, this time towards the Philippines, then making the famous route between Manila and Mexico. He set sail across the Caribbean -visiting Cuba- and reached Spain in 1680. "Towards the end of the volume, Cubero describes his experiences of the New World" (Sabin). Cubero made most of his route by land, thus being constantly in touch with the costumes, religions and ceremonies of the people he visited, describing them in considerable detail. The second part of this work "largely concerns his adventures with the army in Europe, as well as describing the battle of Arsan and other notable events. Named Apostolic Confessor to the army of the Holy Roman Emperor, he served the Emperor against Turcs in Ungria, and was present at the blockade of Buda" (Howgego). BORRI, CRISTOFORO.
, . . De Backer & Sommervogel II, col. 1687; Cordier, Indosinica III, cols. 1917-1918; Howgego B136; KVK & WorldCat (7 copies). Rare first French edition, published in the same year as the original Italian, of a geographical, historical and cultural description of Cochinchina (which in this book means Annam, now central and southern Vietnam) but also discussing Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and Cambodia, "one of the best sources of information for the region" (Howgego). The first half discusses topography, climate, natural history, agriculture, trade and commerce, language, government and society. The second half discusses the region's "spiritual state" and centres on the history of the Jesuit mission in these regions. Borri discusses the Vietnamese language extensively, noting its tonal nature. He shows respect for Confucian learning and, like Matteo Ricci, secularizes it and seems to have considered it compatible with Christianity, against the mainstream Jesuit view. Chapter VIII of part 1 gives an account of the trade and seaports, making it an important source for the history of the region's commercial relations with China and Japan. With an early owner's inscription on the title-page and occasional manuscript notes. Lacking the last leaf, containing the privilege, and with an excision on the title-page restored (probably to remove a library stamp) and two quires slightly browned, but otherwise in good condition. Rare first French edition of an essential source for any study of Southeast Asia.
