DA COSTA (Uriel), LIMBORCH (Philipp van)
Goudae, Justum ab Hoeve [Gouda, Justus van der Hoeve], 1687. [Click Below for Full Description]

So impressed was Dunton with the bookselling possibilities which the sermon and the event afforded, and so struck was he with the probity of 'Minheer Brunning' 'a Dutch bookseller from Holland' then established in Boston and upon whom he called, that he made Brunning (or Browning) his 'Partner in printing "Mr. Mather's Sermon, preached at the Execution of Morgan"'" - Holmes.

[Click Below for Full Description]

-- 8vo, mod. vellum, [12]-304 pp. (paper age-toned, some spotting). Cyrano de Bergerac, Savinien
London: Henry Rhodes, 1687. Octavo, (viii), 140, (iv), 206, (ii). Engraved frontispiece by F. H. van Hove. First complete edition in English, translated by Archibald Lovell. Cyrano was influenced by the revolutionary ideas of Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. He created utopian societies to illustrate the satirical points of his political treatise. Several of these fantasy societies were to influence Swift fifty years later. One of the more remarkable passages in the book appears on pages 121-122 of Part One, in which Cyrano describes a machine which seems virtually identical to an iPod: "It was a Book, indeed; but a Strange and Wonderful Book, that had neither Leaves nor Letters: In fine, it was a Book, made wholly for the Ears, and not the Eyes. So that when any Body has a mind to read in it, he winds up that Machine, with a great many little Springs; then he turns the Hand to the Chapter which he desires to hear, and straight, as from the Mouth of a Man, or a musical Instrument, proceed all the distinct and different Sounds." This is a fine copy in a contemporary calf binding, blind-stamped on the boards and gilt-stamped on the spine. The binding has been skillfully rebacked, preserving the original spine. Contemporary owner's signature on front free endpaper; bookplate to front paste-down. One of the most important precursors to the science fiction canon. (Barron 1-12; Wing C7717).

Peter Valfray, Lyons. "Sacrorum Bibliorum Vulgatae Editionis Concordantiae" - Concordance to the Vulgate Edition of the Sacred Scriptures. Approved by Cardinal Hugo of the Order of the Preachers, as far as can be made out from the 17th century Latin in which the book is written. It's from 1687 but has been very nicely rebound (probably around 1819 to judge from the owner's inscription after the FFEP) in lovely smooth calf leather with five ridges on the spine and a dark panel with gilt title. The pages have quite faded edges and sunned tops (as you'd expect), and quite browned around edges and at ends, with a certain amount of soot and a neat inscription on the page after the FFEP. Binding is fine with slight wear at ends of spine and light shelfwear to boards. Please note: This book is large and may incur additional postage costs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Chaucer Geoffrey
np, 1687. The third Speght edition, and the last 'black letter' edition of Chaucer's works. With the famous engraved Gower portrait and genealogical frontispiece, engraved coat of arms at the beginning of the works and with woodcut initials throughout. Folio, full antique calf, the spine sometime restored to correct period style with raised bands ruled in double gilt and with a red morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. (36), 660, (24) pp. A very handsome copy, internally quite clean and still crisp, a bit of expected mellowing or age evidence, the binding handsome with some expert restoration as noted. A nice, tall copy of this important work. A SCARCE, HANDSOME AND IMPORTANT EDITION. This was the last 'black letter' edition of Chaucer to be published. Thomas Speght included in this edition "The Court of Love," added to the Chaucer canon by Stow in 1561, as well as four new pieces: "The Flower and the Leaf;" "Chaucer's Dream;" "Jacke Upland" (spuriously attributed to Chaucer); and "Chaucer's A B C." The text of the Tales follows that of the 1602 edition, but with the addition of the then recently rediscovered endings of the Cook's and the Squire's tales. There is also a twenty-four page Glossary, "The Old and Obscure Words Explained", at the end of the volume. This copy with fine provenance, with the engraved bookplate of Oliver Huckel, published author and authority on Richard Wagner. Huckel was the translator into English of such works as 'Tannhauser' and 'Parsifal'. With the plate of the Brooklyn Public Library (now deaccessioned) noting it was purchased with the gift o … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHOISY, François-Timoléon de, (L'Abbe de).
Paris Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1687. First edition. 4to., [iv], 416 pp., Title with woodcut vignette; some occasional browning and spotting. Contemporary calf, sides with the gilt arms, spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered red morocco lettering-piece in one, others gilt, neat repairs to extremities, a very handsome example. Rare first edition account of the journal of the Chaumont embassy (1685-1686) sent by Louis XIV to Siam. Choisy was a missionary sent to try to convert King Narai. This mission failed, but Choisy's book, compiled from the experiences of Abbe de Choisy, Father Guy Tachard and the Chevalier de Chaumont, was of great interest and was republished as recently as 1930. Narai was king of Siam from 1656-88, and his credited with producing the first 'golden age' of Thai literature. Encouraged by his foreign minister Constantine Phaulkon the famed Greek adventurer who became a prominent figure in Narai's court, Narai hoped to develop trade relations with the French in order to break the domination of the Dutch East India Company. Embassies were exchanged between Siam and France throughout his reign. Choisy was a colourful character: "De Choisy was born in Paris. His father was attached to the household of the duke of Orléans, and his mother, who was on intimate terms with Anne of Austria, was regularly called upon to amuse Louis XIV. By a whim of his mother, the boy was dressed like a girl until he was eighteen, and, after appearing for a short time in man's costume, he resumed woman's dress on the advice—doubtless satirical—of Madame de La Fayette. He deligh … [Click Below for Full Description]

READ (Alexander)
London: Printed by Edw. Jones, for Christopher Wilkinson, 1687. First edition, 8vo (185 x 120mm), [24], 714pp., lacks the engraved plate of surgical instruments (a facsimile copy is loosely tipped in), cont. calf, morocco label to spine, rubbed, head of spine a little chipped. A major source book for plastic surgery. "Collected edition of the works of the renowned Scottish anatomist, Alexander Read, containing the first English translation of Tagliocozzi's pioneering work on plastic surgery, De Curtorum Chirurgia, 1597 (GM 5734). This translation is found in the fourth and last section of this work between pp. 645-704, 'Of Supplying Defects in the Body', and translates the second and part of Tagliacozzi, dealing with the practice and techniques of surgical restoration of defects by grafting and plastic surgery including grafting of the nose, ear and lips, incision of the bridge, harelip etc. No complete translation into English of Tagliocozzi's great work has been published, and the original work is itself, of great rarity. Practised in India and ancient Rome, plastic surgery in Christian Europe was firmly frowned upon, with the families of surgeons keeping the secrets of their methods to themselves. Tagliocozzi was the first to openly publish his methods, in particular on rhinoplasty. For his pains he was removed from his Christian grave-site and buried in unconsecrated ground. Alexander Read was a distinguished Scottish anatomist, surgeon, teacher and author. He obtained his medical degree at Aberdeen after 1600, and later lived in the borders of Wales. Quite superb clean copy with all three plates, plus frontispece and script translation pages present. The binding is a very plain modern cloth thing with the spine cloth missing but this is almost incidental as it would benefit enormously from a fine rebinding. Previous owner insriptions on front free end paper very neat in pen. Further owner inscription at top of title page and at rear after index. Some browning which is possibly water staining to a few pages including, unfortunately, the edges of the plate opp. page 116 of plants. Noticeable but not too severe. Less so to plate opp page 185 and 145 but more severe on chart translation of Malabar Alphabet pages. In all though this is a fabulous piece and a very rare find indeed of this sought after title.
