COUPLET (Philippe).
Parisiis, Apud Danielem Horthemels, 1687. in-4. 8ff. "This book is an excerpt from the 'Confucius Sinarum philosophus'. At the time when the controversy over the Chinese Rites started, there was discussion about the term Shang-ti, about which the missioners held different opinions among themselves. The Jesuits therefore made studies based on the writings of Confucius and from the ancient Chinese classics, on the term Shang-ti and then published what they thought was the correct interpretation" (Chang). David Chang, "Chinese Materials in the Jesuit Archives in Rome, 14th-20th Centuries: a descriptive Catalogue", p.480. ROGGEVEEN, Arent & ROBIJN, Jacob
Amsterdam,: Jacobus Robyn met Privilegio Voor is Iaaren A'o, 1687.. Tusscheb B de S Matheo en C. Henry op Niew Verbeetert door First state. Double-page engraved chart, with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. Large-scale sea chart of the Carolina coast - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. In 1687 Robijn replaced the earlier chart of the south-east with this one. It is interestingly derived from Johannes van Keulen's 'Pas Kaart Van de Kust van Carolina,' 1684, the publisher whom he had been working with in 1679. Robijn rotates the projection to a north-south one and in the process eliminates the south portion of Chesapeake Bay. The coastline is virtually identical but nomenclature does vary. One notable new addition is B de S. Anna and a sand bar is also placed at C Faire. The position of Charles Town is still on the south bank of the Rio Grande, a position from which it relocated in 1680. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and W … [Click Below for Full Description]

Capitano MONALDI’.
Milan: per Marc’Antonio Pandolfo Malatesta, [], 1687. 8°: [4 pp.], bound in modern marbled paper (Good, staining to title, small hole through upper part of first leaf not affecting text, some old folds). A seemingly unrecorded, curious account of a Venetian soldier, a ‘Capitano Monaldi’, who while on campaign in Dalmatia takes a 110-year old Turkish man as a slave who regales him with entertaining stories of events at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This wonderfully bizarre little work contains the text of a letter supposedly written by a Venetian soldier, a ‘Capitano Monaldi’, dated October 1, 1687, from Castelnuovo, Dalmatia (today Herceg Novi, Montenegro), written immediately after the Venetians had conquered the town from the Ottomans. In the account, Monaldi writes that following the seizure of Castelnuovo he encountered many Turks, upon whom he remarked that both the men and the women were very fond coffee and tobacco; he noted that tobacco leaves were very large. Apparently, coffee and tobacco had medicinal uses which allowed the Turks to defy the aging process. Monaldi goes on to claim that he has taken a captured Turk as slave and that, incredibly, he was 110 years old, yet still as strong and alert as a man of thirty! Monaldi proceeds to tell a curious story told by the Turkish centenarian about his time in Jerusalem and his visit to the Church of Holy Sepulchre, recalling verbal disagreements between Franciscan monks and Turks within one of the Christianity’s holiest sites. While we cannot find much information on the supposed author, we do know th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francisco OLIVER (Publisher, fl. 1661 - 1687).
Mallorca [Palma]: por Francisco Oliver. 8°: 4 pp., bound in modern marbled paper (Very Good, just some light toning to final page). A seemingly unrecorded Mallorca imprint detailing the exciting events leading up to and during the momentous victory of the Holy League against the Ottoman at the Second Battle of Mohács (August 12, 1687), which drove the Turks out of Hungary forever, plus coverage of the Venetians’ successful campaign against the Ottomans in Morea, Greece; published in Palma by Francisco Oliver. This seemingly unrecorded Mallorca imprint captures the exciting events of the Summer of 1687 leading up to and during the Second Battle of Second Battle of Mohács (August 12, 1687), a watershed event whereby allied Christian armies defeated a great Ottoman force, driving the Turks out of Hungary forever. It also includes a short summary of that season’s Venetian victories against the Ottomans in Morea (the Peloponnese, Greece). The events in both theatres were a part of the ongoing Great Turkish War (1683-99 – 26), an epic conflict whereby the Holy League of Christian powers finally turned the tables on the Turks, rolling back two centuries of Ottoman expansion in Europe. The work was published in Mallorca by Francisco Oliver to satiate the Spanish public’s intense interest in the Turkish Wars. While Spain was not directly involved in this war, both Spain and Austria (the main anti-Turkish force) were ruled by branches of the same Habsburg family, while Spaniards maintained a strong sense of solidarity with their Christian brethren, having themselves battled Muslim po … [Click Below for Full Description]

Signed `J Van Huysum' (lower right). Pencil and watercolour, crowned shield with fleur-de-lys watermark. A fine image of two stems, the longer topped by a mass of small white flowers, the second much shorter showing the black berries. Jacob van Huysum was born in Amsterdam in about 1687, a member of a renowned family of professional flower painters who enjoyed considerable success in Holland. His father was Justus van Huysum (1659-1716), and his brother Jan van Huysum (1682-1749). Jacob painted in much the same manner as his brother, and as with his brother's work, many of his drawings betray the temperament of an artist rather than that of a botanical illustrator. His 'work, especially in England, has often been mistaken for his brother's. Van Huysum came to England about 1721, in which year he was living in the house of a patron, Mr. Lockyear of the South Sea House. Subsequently he was patronised by Sir Robert Walpole, who received him as an intimate of his house at Chelsea, and employed him to paint flowerpieces... for the decoration of the great house at Houghton in Norfolk' (DNB ). He also provided the majority of the drawings for the 50 illustrations to John Martyn's Historia Plantarum Rariorum (London: 1728-38), as well all the drawings to another work, Catalogus Plantarum.. A catalogue of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers (London: 1730). The present drawing shows the painterly approach where the artist, whilst not sacrificing botanical accuracy, tries to capture the essence of his subject. His work offers a contrast to the more strictly scientific … [Click Below for Full Description]

REDI, Francesco
1687. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Francesco Redi was a 17th-century Italian physician who recorded his most famous biology experiments in "Experiments on the Generation of Insects". This work, first published in 1668, disproved the vipers could consume wine, break glass, and that their venom was poisonous if ingested. His observations on snakes helped establish many of the accepted understandings of snakes, particularly venomous snakes. Redi played an important role in refuting 'spontaneous generation' - the theory that maggots arose from rotted meat. He was also the very first biologist to describe ectoparasites, ticks, parasite flies, and interesting experiments of chemotherapy. He discusses his observations on hippopotamuses and the capybara. This 1687 edition features six full-page engravings foliage, leaves, Annona tree fruit, and snake eggs. It is taken directly from the first edition published in Florence and includes Redi's famous 'Letters' in addition to his 'Experiments'. This collection of works was published before his most famous work 'Bacco in Toscana' a famous literary work on wine. [Attributes: First Edition]

CHAUCER, Geoffrey
1687. "all that glitters is not gold" - Geoffrey Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales. English folio 17th-century Chaucer's are extremely scarce in themselves, but this third Speght edition is considered extremely important! This was the last 'black letter' edition of Chaucer's works and includes the famous engraved Gower portrait with genealogical figures on the frontispiece. This printing is a reissue of the 1602 Speght, which included "The Court of Love," which wasn't part of the Chaucer anon until 1561. A glossary and four other new pieces were added to this edition as well - "The Flower and the Leaf," "Chaucer's Dream," "Jacke Upland," and "Chaucer's A B C." However, this third edition includes for the first time the printed conclusions on 'Cook's Tale' and 'Squire's Tale', "Siege of Thebes" by John Lydgate, and a portrait of Chaucer - not in any other edition! London: Printed for Nicholas Cox, 1687. Condition: Very Good binding. An extracted selection of leaves from one of two unauthorized first issues of Gerard Longbaine's Momus Triumphans: or, the Plagiaries of the English Stage. Text on the flyleaf states: "these are all the leaves from Langbaine's rare catalogue mentioning Shakespeare. 1688." With four pages of prefix, unpaginated, pp. 5-8, 19-26, 29-30, and the complete index. Langbaine's catalogue is organized by author, with title, genre, and size. Footnotes for the titles detail the plagiarism, such as: "Tho. Otway.(e) caius Marius - T. 4o...(e) stollen part form Shakespear's Romeo & Juliet, Plot from Plutarch, in his life of C. Marius, and Lucan's Pharsalia, book ad." Shakespeare, a notorious 'borrower' of plots and tropes, has a page entirely to himself, with notations for many of his titles as to where the plot originated. Title and publication information taken from a reference card laid in, and the ESTC. Half green leather over marbled paper boards. Wear to the edges of the spine and boards. Very Good. (ESTC R3459. This book is regarded as one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and the Near East. This incredible work includes beautiful folding plates, plates of maps, city views, and important Persian events. In this book Chardin discusses his journeys from Constantinople to the Black Sea, Persia, and throughout the Middle East (Kashan, Iraq; Armenia, Crimea, and Georgia). The end of his journey took him through the Cape of Good Hope, on his way home. Upon his return, he was considered quite a celebrity in London; though, according to Evelyn he was 'not inclined to talke wonders". He met with famous members of the Royal Society, all of whom took great interest in his voyage. He told them of his witnessing of Abbas II's coronation, and the jewels and fine ornaments he had seen. ENDERLIN, Jacob. (Publisher).
Augspurg, Verlag Jacob Enderling, Drucker Thomas Astaler, 1687.Sm.8vo.Contemporary vellum (spine restored). With title printed in red and black, folding plan, folding map of the Black Sea, and 26 (16 folding) engraved plates depicting views, plants and animals. 74, (2) pp. Many similar works were issued by the publisher Jacob Enderlin at that time. Including a description of Constantinople with fine view. He was trying to take advantage of the interest in the Levant aroused by the Austro - Venetian - Turkish wars of 1684 - 1690. Many of the plates were based on engravings from Coronelli's Memorie Istoriografische della Morea. All the Enderlin publications are related and made use of many of the same plates. There was one publication every year from 1685 to at least 1693(Collection Contominas 239). The work was probably inspired by the increased interest in Ottoman affairs which followed the unsuccessful siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683, rather than through any pressing need to communicate first-hand information about Constantinople to actual travellers (Koç p.175).Atabey 402; Blackmer 1303(note); Weber 749.
