First edition of this important catalogue of the Leiden botanic garden portraying numerous exotic recently introduced plants. "Hermann returned to Leiden in 1680 on receiving an appointment as Professor of Botany and director of the botanic garden. He devoted himself assiduously to building up the Leiden garden with rare plants from the East Indies, America and the Cape. His first publication, 'Horti academici Lugduno-Batavi catalogus', Leiden 1687, was a descriptive catalogue of the plants in the University garden in which many are attractively illustrated, including 34 Cape plants" (Gunn & Codd, Botanical exploration of Southern Africa pp. 26-27)."Paul Hermann was director of the Leiden Botanical garden from 1679-1695. He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants, and one group of his drawings of Ceylon plants, made in the second half of the 17th century, had an interesting history. They were carefully preserved for many years by a series of collectors, one of whom finally brought them to the attention of Linné in 1745. Linné found them so exciting that he based his 'Flora Zeylandica' on them in 1747 ." (Hunt 378). Thousands of specimens from outside the Netherlands were in cultivation towards the end of the century and the garden attained world-wide reknown. The attractive allegorical frontispiece shows the Leiden botanical garden. Bound in cancelled leaves C3 and Aa7 as usual (see Hunt). At the outer margin 2 plates partially cut at plate edge.         Pas kaart van de Zee kusten van Guiana Cabo Noord en Rio Amano

Johannes van Keulen, Amsterdam 1687 - A very fine copy of this excellent and very early chart of French Guiana. This beautifully-finished map was published by innovative Dutch cartographer and publisher ,Johannes van Keulen, in the 1687 second edition of the third volume his Sea-Atlas [or Zee-Fakkel ]. The chart concentrates on Cayenne (now the capital of French Guiana) and coast to the north-west almost to the border with Surinam and south-east to the border with Brazil and beyond to the Rio Arowary, close to the mouth of the Amazon. There are two insets: one a close-up of the island of Cayenne, and the second of the French fort of the same name. The French made a number of abortive attempts to colonise the region, in 1604 and 1643, and it was not until 1664, when France finally succeeded at establishing a permanent settlement at Cayenne. As with most parts of the region, the area changed hand a number of times, between the French, Dutch and English, before being finally restored to France. Cf. Koeman IV, Keu109B. Copper-engraved map, full contemporary hand-colouring, heightened with gold.

Pas-kaart van de Golff van Mexico

Johannes Van Keulen, Amsterdam 1687 - Van Keulen's scarce 17th century chart of the western Gulf of Mexico, oriented with west to the north. Van Keulen's rare chart of the western portion of the Gulf of Mexico "covers the coastline from the panhandle of present day Florida around to the Yucatan peninsula. The main feature of this map is its originality of form. It is the first sea chart of the western portion of the Gulf of Mexico detailing the coastal waters of present-day Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The geography is largely derived from the exceedingly rare Hessel Gerritz chart of c. 1631" (Burden). As expected, most of the toponyms are Spanish and the mouth of the Mississippi is labelled Baja de Spirito Sancto. Oriented to the west, "it represented the most sophisticated rendering of the coast then available" (Martin & Martin). The Van Keulen family were chart and instrument makers, and publishers of nautical textbooks, books on sea law, shipbuilding, almanacs and more. Founded by Joannes van Keulen (c.1654-1715), the firm remained in business for over 200 years. For the publication of his Zee-Fakkel, Keulen retained geographer and mathematician Claes Janszoon Vooght. Burden's second state, with the page number "14" added to the lower left corner, but before later additions and re-engravings. Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 592; Martin & Martin, Maps of Texas and the Southwest p. 85, plate 11. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring. Inset of the waters near Vera Cruz. (Expert restoration at sheet edges).

        L'Architecture navale,

Quarto (241 × 172 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, title gilt direct to the spine, foliate lozenge to the compartments with spiral corner-pieces, edges sprinkled red. Joint title/half-title bound in, publisher's device to the title page of the first-named, which is complete with 7 plates, 5 of them folding, and a folding table. Slightly rubbed, corners bumped, a few small nicks on the boards, neatly restored on the joints, head- and tail-caps and at the corners, plates a little rolled at the fore-edge, one leaf misbound, light browning, but overall a very good copy. First edition. "Consideré comme le premier traité d'architecture navale" (Polak). Although perhaps not the first, Dassié's work is almost certainly the first such work written by a professional in the field, and framed in such a way as to be of practical assistance to fellow shipbuilders. Dassié is a somewhat obscure figure. He was apparently born in Normandy, and lived and worked at various times in both Le Havre and Rouen. On the title page he is styled "C.R.", or"chanoine régulier", a canon regular, of the Order of Saint-Ruf, an Augustinian order named for the first bishop of Avignon, with various sources describing him as master shipbuilder to the king at Le Havre, and to the coast guard at Toulon. As usual the work is bound together with Le Routier des Indes Orientales et Occidentales, which offers a compilation of 26 navigations into the East and West Indies based on Dutch and Portuguese sources.

L'Antiquite des tems retablie et defendue contre les Juifs & les Nouveaux Chronologistes.

Paris, veuve d'Edme Martin, Jean Boudot & Estienne Martin, 1687.. circa 28 x 21,5 cm. 6 ff., 295 , 36, 39 pp., with an engraved vignette to title and a nice engraving of the Tower of Babel in the text Contemporary cardboard. Barbier I, 220; Dorbon-Aine 3640; Rosenthal 8775. Rare first edition printed in Paris (reprinted the same year in Amsterdam). A curious work, that tries to reestablish a correct chronology of the history of the world, that according to the author has been falsified by Jewish historians, who omitted at least 1000 years. Pezron (1639-1706) goes back to Egyptian sources that proved valuable for those interested in the occult (the book is quoted by the bibliographers of esoteric sciences). Of particular interest are the long chapters on Chinese chronology and the sequence of dynasties. Pezron can be considered one of the first European scholars to study Chinese history and its relation to Western culture. - The vignette on the title shows a bookshelf in an architectural border, the engraving in the text is a view of the city of Babel with the Tower. - Nice copy, just minor staining to the first six leaves, minor browning. Uncut. From the library of the historian Georg August von Breitenbauch (1731-1817; also: Breitenbuch) with his engraved bookplate.

        Viburnum (Viburnum tinus)

      - A fine image of two stems, the longer topped by a mass of small white flowers, the second much shorter showing the black berries. Jacob van Huysum was born in Amsterdam in about 1687, a member of a renowned family of professional flower painters who enjoyed considerable success in Holland. His father was Justus van Huysum (1659-1716), and his brother Jan van Huysum (1682-1749). Jacob painted in much the same manner as his brother, and as with his brother's work, many of his drawings betray the temperament of an artist rather than that of a botanical illustrator. His 'work, especially in England, has often been mistaken for his brother's. Van Huysum came to England about 1721, in which year he was living in the house of a patron, Mr. Lockyear of the South Sea House. Subsequently he was patronised by Sir Robert Walpole, who received him as an intimate of his house at Chelsea, and employed him to paint flowerpieces. for the decoration of the great house at Houghton in Norfolk' (DNB ). He also provided the majority of the drawings for the 50 illustrations to John Martyn's Historia Plantarum Rariorum (London: 1728-38), as well all the drawings to another work, Catalogus Plantarum. A catalogue of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers (London: 1730). The present drawing shows the painterly approach where the artist, whilst not sacrificing botanical accuracy, tries to capture the essence of his subject. His work offers a contrast to the more strictly scientific approach of Georg Dionysius Ehret, his younger contemporary and sometime colleague. Cf. Henrey II, p.213. Signed `J Van Huysum' (lower right). Pencil and watercolour, crowned shield with fleur-de-lys watermark.

Nieuwe doch aanmerkens-waardige historie van Abissinien, andersints Ethiopien, getrokken uit de Latijnsche historie .. en nu in't Nederduitsch gebracht door Willem Calebius.

Utrecht, Johannes Ribbius, 1687.4to. Later half vellum, with old brocade-paper to boards. With folding map and 8 engraved plates (3 folding). 222,(10) pp.* First Dutch edition. - The treatise by the scholar, Job (Hiob) Ludolf (1624-1704), was first published in Latin, Historia Aethiopica, in 1681, and is regarded as the first authoritative account of Abyssinia. He has been called the 'founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe'. Although he never visited the country, Ludolf formed a close working relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome, himself clearly a highly intelligent man. From this fruitful partnership emerged grammars and dictionaries of the classical Ethiopian language as well as a lengthy history of the country. The large folding map by Tellez, is a landmark of cartography, as it is the first to show the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. The fine plates depict illustrations of Ethiopean fauna, a banana plant, decapitation of missionnaries, etc.- (Owner's name on title-page; partly dampstaining, slight browning, stronger to one quire). - Rare Dutch edition.Tiele 702; Cat.         The History of the Most Renowned Don Quixote of Mancha: And his Trusty Squire Sancho Pancha, Now Made English according to the Humour of our Modern Language. And Adorned with several Copper Plates

London: Printed by Tho. Hodgkin, and are to be sold by John Newton, , 1687.. London: Printed by Tho. Hodgkin, and are to be sold by John Newton, 1687. First edition of the first illustrated edition in English of Don Quixote. Folio, bound in full brown calf to period style, preserving the original boards. With copper-engraved frontispiece and eight copper-engraved plates, each bearing two images. From the library at Brandon on the James, the plantation home to the Harrisons in Virginia. In very good condition. Translated by John Phillips. A very nice copy. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladamir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality... He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon.
